My last day in Pattaya would prove to be a frustrating one with one of my worst experiences at a bar in SE Asia.

But first I met Sam for breakfast at a place he recommended on soi 13 called The Sportsman. I had a decent full English and two cups of tea for 170 baht.

We had a nice leisurely walk along the beach, past 'the oldest bar in Pattaya', Tahitian Queen, and had a cold beer in a nice relaxed beer-bar complex overlooking the beach. Sam then walked me around Central mall which struck me as a good place to take a girl. There is a cinema on the top floor, a bowling alley, arcade, lots of places to eat and of course plenty of shops. On second thoughts, maybe it isn't a good place to take a girl.

I had a number of things I needed to do during the afternoon and met Sam at 6. 30 pm outside Subway. We agreed to start our bar crawl on soi Pothole. I passed a lovely looking girl at a massage-with-extras place before we settled on a bar called Korn Beer Bar. Sam chose the place because he recognised a pretty girl he'd seen at Olny LK Bar the night before. Visited the two mentioned gogo bars. Windmill and Pin-up. I must say both want you to do Antigen tests. Stupid me came back to my room and did the test at home to show them, but still Windmill wanted a new test done, so I did one more there.

They look sad that you came negative. I mean it. I can face read more than anyone. They must be getting commission if someone comes positive and is hospitalized for 60 k to 120 k baht.

I think Mr E. Is fine with people buying lady drinks to socialize and have fun. However, he believes people are buying lady drinks for the wrong reason.

They think that buying more LD's will improve their chance to barfine the girl that they like.

He is saying that whether you buy 1 or 10 lady drinks, when you eventually get around to asking her to bar fine, the answer will be the same.

There is no one size fits all here. There are different types of girls that will respond to different approaches.

Upstairs only Dollhouse which has merged with Electric Blue upstairs only, Queens they are all the same many you need not even Go in the door and lights are opened if not for the Wall at the entrance you think you are in a beer bar. You're right. I actually went into Walking Street today, all the way to the end and back. There are less than 10, but more than 5 decently staffed gogo bars there now. It's interesting that a guy's drink and a lady drink cost the same (usually). They were quoting me 150 for each. But I didn't feel like drinking with them when they told me the barfine is 1. 2 k-1. 5 k and ST is 2. 5 k-3 k. There are a lot of hot girls in some of these bars. There's a limited amount of dancing on stages. Not sure how much action you get inside the bar. I didn't hang out long to find out.

Ride to Soi 6

With the sticker shock (it's probably pre-Covid pricing. I don't remember barfining on Walking Street on previous trips, either), I left Walking Street and took a baht bus to Soi 6. I love taking the baht bus (costs 10 baht, and it's actually a truck, not a bus) everywhere. It feels like a big Fuck You to all those rip off motorbike drivers who want 100-200 baht to drive less than 5 minutes.

Before I detail my Soi 6 adventure, I wanted to mention the massage shop I visited. It's very close to by hotel and on the way to Soi Buakhao. My flight from Chiang Rai to Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport took an hour. It only cost about 1400 baht with Vietjet, who seem to be offering a lot of great deals at the moment.

There are plenty of eager taxi drivers willing to take you directly to Pattaya but the bus only costs 130 baht. To take it, turn left, descend down to level one and keep walking until you reach exit 7. You'll see a booth selling tickets.

I'm staying at LK Metropole again. My room is spacious, has everything I need and there is a swimming pool and gym too. But the most important factor is its location, right in the heart of the action. My room cost 1050 baht a night and I'm staying for ten days.

I grabbed a bite to eat at a restaurant overlooking soi Buakhao, visited the 7 Eleven to stock up on snacks for my room and organised some laundry. Before I knew it the time was 6 pm.

I met my friend Sam outside my hotel and we decided to start with a drink at Zero Bar on soi Buakhao. As it's close to my hotel I'd passed it a number of times and spotted a pretty girl. She took our order but put me off by immediately asking for a drink. I decided to catch up with Sam instead. My Chang beer cost 60 baht.

Annie Jacks on soi Buakhao has a good selection of girls and I was delighted to see my favourite didn't have a customer. If a Thai got tested positive and was concerned they couldn't just go to any hospital particularly a private and get confirmation to a PCR, I went to Pattaya Memorial back of hospital a big tent with a sign in English " PCR 3500 baht " told if you want free there is nothing free here you want free go down the road to Banglamung so down we went by that time it was 12:30 pm told testing is only done 7-11 am guess Omicron on spreads in the morning come back in the morning.

The next morning Q up hour waited filling out forms when the number was called didn't talk to a doctor or nurse but just a regular clerk, no testing (PCR) they just take your word for it told to go home pack a bag, and return the next morning. The next morning everyone is shuttled to an unfinished hospital wing in the back we are talking a few hundred again no doctor or nurse filling out paperwork waiting for only an x-ray is taken a few hours later mini-buses pull up and take them away to hotels throughout Pattaya you are assigned another roommate to quarantine for 10 days given a QR code, a self Antigen test and 9 days of medication on the 4th day you submit your test results the 5th, a truck pulls up to your hotel and provides another X-Ray.

Never do you talk to a professional about your situation after the 9th day a call is received and told you are clear to go home tomorrow. If what I saw on those days hundreds being carted off they don't need to open the place up hundreds are being let go each day by 12 noon the places have been cleaned and filled the hotels and hospital are making a killing reporting falsely to be paid by the Government tab and a nice kickback to the Mayor of Pattaya.

All these new clubs opening, GC, I do a nice walk around 1 or twice a week on foot, that allows me to spot any germs in the crowd but rarely do I venture in to eat or have a drink except their grand or soft opening. Some of you PMed me inquiring if it's a hassle to enter Thailand. It was extremely easy for me. I am a USA citizen so I don't need a visa. I entered Bangkok from Singapore in just 2 days after making the decision (to enter). These are the steps I took:

Download 'Thailand Pass' app, register and get approved. Very fast and easy, much easier than Singapore's system.

Buy Covid insurance of at least US $20,000 (was US $50,000 before March 1) for your entire stay in Thailand.

Book an 'SHA+' hotel with airport pickup and PCR test included. I booked my SHA+ hotel for 1 day via Agoda.com.

Get PCR test day before entering Thailand.

The hotel driver picked me up from the airport, drove straight to a Covid test site to do my PCR test, then delivered me to the hotel. I had to quarantine in my room until they received my negative result which they called my room to tell me (took about 6 hours). I can then go out. I checked out the next morning and went to Pattaya. I was also given an ART self-test kit at the test site which I had to self-test on the fifth day and uploaded to the 'Morchana' app (like Singapore's 'TraceTogether' app.).

Before leaving Bangkok to return to Singapore, I had to do a supervised ART test (Singapore's entry requirement). I tried to book online with 2 different providers but my USA credit card was not accepted. I panicked and took a motorbike taxi to Bangkok Hospital as a walk-in patient. It turned out to be better because for 1,300 bt, I had my blood pressure tested and a doctor examined me including using a stethoscope, then an ART test with result emailed to me in 3 hours. The other online sites wanted 1,600 bt and God knows where they were located!

But leasing directly through them will save you a few thousand baht per month, although there's usually 3 k-5 k deposit required. If you're interested, DM me. The condo I'm staying at (The BASE) is costing me 19000 per month. Grand Ave is advertising 15000 per month, and it's only a few minutes walk from The BASE. Fellow ISG member currently staying at Grand Ave tells me he prefers Grand Ave because the condo is slightly bigger. Internet at my place is pretty shitty. The owner has a modem set up that takes a sim card instead of a cable modem. I frequently get 3-5 Mbps. Sometimes, I'll have to use my phone's (AIS-unlimited data) hotspot. Other than that, I love my condo. Has a nice gym and rooftop pool. Separate living space, kitchen (doubles as my office), and bedroom. Also has laundry on the balcony. I ordered room cleaning service for $12 after being here for 2. 5 weeks.

1. The BASE and Grand Ave don't have issues with people bringing guests to their rooms. I think most Pattaya AirBNBs won't have issues with that. But you'd have to confirm with the owner. I had 1 owner on AirBNB say she wasn't comfortable with various ladies walking in and out of their condo in Bangkok.

Technically you need a motorbike license in your home country (doubt most of us have this) and an International Driver's Permit (easy to get) to ride a motorbike. I just returned from Honduras and the isle of Roatan within the Bay of Islands. There were no test requirements before arrival or upon arrival. The only test I had to take was the standard antigen test to reenter the US. Virtually no one wore masks except the clinician who tested me prior to departure. If anything the PI did it right by requiring a negative test result 72 hours before flying there, but not requiring testing in country. At least if you test positive before, you can cancel your trip. Flying all the way to Thailand without any pretest is not something I would do and makes absolutely no sense whatsoever considering you still have to test twice IN country.

When it comes to renting a bike, some will ask you for a license from home some will ask you for your passport? There have been articles in the past the police requesting vendors to make sure? But if they follow the suggestion they mostly would go out of business the police have told vendors to make sure renters have a verified license to operate a motorbike if they did that they would all go out of business.

There are two rules one for the foreigner and one for Thai! So when you are stopped or in an accident expect the two rules. If you have an International permit normally to be issued for a motorbike you must present your license to indicate you are permitted. In the States, like AAA your license must indicate that specific class if indicated the clerk will put their stamp in the area in which you are permitted to operate. There was a time the police had no clue what to look for as long as you presented the book they let you go today they have learned to look for that stamp at least in Pattaya.

There is a 99.9% there is no 3rd party insurance on the bike, whatever insurance is the required yearly registration and insurance which only covers the medical bill of 15,000 - 50,000 I've not heard too many Foreigners even those living here that have been reimbursed when they have been in an accident. If you have travel insurance you aren't licensed to actually drive a bike good luck.

When renting you should know the value of the bike you are renting it gets stolen (not likely) the vendor most likely from my experience will charge you a full price as if the bike is new. If you unlucky break a mirror for example just go to a shop and have it replaced the vendor will try to charge yo 3 times. There is also a perception by many that if a foreigner is in an accident they are always wrong if you can't explain yourself in an accident expect to pay upwards and if you kill someone god help you! If you luckily hurt someone they most likely will go to the government hospital for treatment but don't expect your portion to be government prices they will sock it to you one thinks testing positive and having to quarantine is bad expect worse?

Most here talk about the drinking whatever coverage you might think you have is void if reports say you were drinking!

The plan like another location the former Re-Con hotel side Soi is to dig and drop in a cement channel large enough that a mini cooper can drive through. The theory is in a heavy downpour this channel can hold water below surface until it drain away currently the 24-32 inch pipes aren't doing the job once fill the water pops to the surface it helps but is no real solution since all the water drains to beach row and the sea. I don't see them coming down past the Avenue toward Soi Buakhao the Grand Avenue condo should be safe?

Quick report on Pattaya. Things are sure picking up, more and more bars starting to open on soi 6. Top of the street is still a bit barren but there are a few bars there. Amazingly enough, the manager of the hotel responded that he was sorry but these were the rules.

In the meantime, I read another dozen reviews. Some parts of the hotel have a bad smell from a river that flows through the grounds. Some parts are renovated, and other parts have non working bathrooms.

If the Hilton is really GF, I will go there. It seems perfect for my needs except it is a little far from the action.

I used to stay at the Marriott when it was the Marriott. In my experience glass house was the most welcoming on WS followed by windmill but I never been there because I don't want to get tested. For every monger like you or me, who burns money at gogo's or ringing bell's at bars while hopping across them & so on, there are (relatively wealthy) Indians whom I've seen haggling with street hookers for a meagre amount of money. At times, they haggle with WG's to allow a group of obese men (often 2-3 or 4) have sex with a single girl, so that the deal becomes lucrative & some money can be saved. Such behaviour doesn't go unnoticed & then we get stereotyped as being super cheap charlies who won't spend money. One Thai girl with whom I was a regular told me that she & her friends always make it a point to charge money upfront if the client happens to be an Indian, as she had a bad experience where the guy didn't pay her the agreed amount after the deed. She was embarrassed when I told her that I have my roots in India as well. Personally speaking, I've never experienced discrimination while being in LOS, except once when a moto bike guy quoted me 100 THB for a drop from my hotel to Terminal 21 (approx 2 KM distance). I told him it's not the going rate as I regularly pay less for the same ride, & he taunted me by saying that Indians often walk across Pattaya & suggested that if I would walk to T21, I'd save a lot of money. I brushed it off as another moto bike guy approached me & quoted usual rates & off we went.

Coming to how one can mitigate it, so I'd suggest that try & dress well. Avoid body odour, remain well groomed, carry yourself with confidence & most importantly, avoid being in large groups as that freaks out most TG's. If you feel that you're being overcharged, simply walk away & look for whatever rocks your boat instead of haggling. I've always been a lone wolf in Thailand & never have I been discriminated on the basis of my skin / ethnicity. In fact, I am still mates with most of the girls I met & I made some great friends with some of the guys as well, who were my drink mates during my stay.

I am hurt.It is sad it happens personally I've not had any problems entering clubs or Gogos as soon as they see me I'm like a walking ATM. But as noted by Mr. E, in Thailand when you get past the sex as I've experienced the racism that exists goes far beyond just not allowing one into a GoGo. Majority of Indians often haggle on everything for a meagre amount of money. There were more cases of them refusing to pay the agreed amount after the deed even. 1 case goes like: The guy agreed 1000 baht for ST. After the deed is done, he asked for 50% discount and says he'll just pay 500 baht.

In another case, group of Indian tourist walk into a massage parlour. They haggle for half the quoted price. After they got the price they agreed on, they asked to see the girl naked first. Yeah 3-4 guys sampling on 1 selected girl naked. When they've enjoyed the view, they walked out of the place saying the deal is no good and refused to pay a single baht after having enjoyed someone who was paraded to them naked and some drinks. In return, these massage parlours mark up they normal prices by 50% as they'll be expecting the usual haggling from Indian tourists.

Its so bad that more and more people just avoid doing business with them altogether. The meagre amount of money they offer isn't even worth the time and effort to haggle with them.

Personally speaking, I've never experienced discrimination while being in LOS, except once when a moto bike guy quoted me 100 THB for a drop from my hotel to Terminal 21 (approx 2 KM distance). I told him it's not the going rate as I regularly pay less for the same ride, & he taunted me by saying that Indians often walk across Pattaya & suggested that if I would walk to T21, I'd save a lot of money. I brushed it off as another moto bike guy approached me & quoted usual rates & off we went.

Coming to how one can mitigate it, so I'd suggest that try & dress well. Avoid body odour, remain well groomed, carry yourself with confidence & most importantly, avoid being in large groups as that freaks out most TG's. If you feel that you're being overcharged, simply walk away & look for whatever rocks your boat instead of haggling. I've always been a lone wolf in Thailand & never have I been discriminated on the basis of my skin / ethnicity. In fact, I am still mates with most of the girls I met & I made some great friends with some of the guys as well, who were my drink mates during my stay.

I maintain friendly contact with a number of Thai non-P4P friends including workers at hotels, restaurants, and no sex massage shops. The things written by YearOfMonk are 100% consistent with what I'm told by those Thai people. The biggest complaints come from hotel staff because the rooms are left smelling bad with missing items, no tips, and overly aggressive India people at the breakfast buffet and crowded elevator lobby. The restaurant and massage people complain of body odor and no tips.

Thailand discriminates based on your appearance more than any place I've ever visited. It's just part of life in Thailand.This would be my opinion as well. Thailand is a very superficial place to visit. Land of Smiles could very well be Land of Fake Smiles. But YearOfMonk makes good points on how to try to mitigate these discriminatory encounters. If you have the appearance that you may be someone of importance, or appear to be wealthy, then your odds for overcoming those discriminatory perceptions should increase. Not saying that it'll totally eliminate those types of encounters. It's unfortunate that discrimination based solely on appearances or stereotypes exists. Personally, if I was turned away by any business based on foolish discrimination, then I'd just move on. Nowadays, there are plenty of other places to visit in Pattaya to have an enjoyable time. Personally, I would hang out around the Tree Town and LK Metro areas for nightlife entertainment. Except for a handful of places open, Walking Street is pretty much dead.

Nice, last thing I'd want is reception asking to take the girl's temperature and rapid ATK test before going to your room.I had a so-called non-pro girl from BKK stay with me a few nights (different hotel though) and she mentioned there had been some altercation with a gay member of the hotel staff about taking an ATK, but it ended up she didn't have to. So my suggestion is just be and look confident and it will mostly be fine. The automatic temp checks are everywhere, if the hotel has one just pre-check her temp at 7-11 or something if worried that your barfine is too hot.

Thank advance and looking forward to seeing what Pattaya is all about.If you arrive into BKK I assume you do your Test & Go PCR test at a BKK hotel? When you're good you can take a bus or van from Ekkamai bus terminal (BTS Station Ekkamai, there's OK signage). Buses are about 119 baht and vans 140. Vans can drop you in central Pattaya (at the main road) but may take longer due to many stops / avoiding tolls.

Taxi Pattaya to BKK is 1200, BKK cabbies will probably ask much more, just guessing. I'd take Airport Link to BKK airport and try catch an empty, homebound Pattaya taxi at departures, they will be OK with maybe 900, surely 1000 (99% are empty on return). Have no idea how many they are now post covid. There are buses from Suvarnabhumi as well, daytime operation mostly these days.
