I just read a report at www.pattayaone.net/news that the tax on <12% alc. beverages was going to be raised by a further 20B per 100 ml!!! 40B/100 for the hard stuff.
Holy crap! That's over $3/liter, US, added to the already somewhat high price for brew in Siam.
Is this true? If so, tourism in the LOS is OVER!!!!

there's plenty of good advices available in this forum and elsewhere for the newbies, so, just read them if you are new to the game in thailand. the land of smiles is still a relatively safe place for mongering, even with freelancers (most of them are honest girls, the bad ones and the thieves are a very little minority), provided that you don't act like a fool.
On the Stickman site I've read about a certain police scam where they'll stop a foreigner at the bus station en route to or arriving from Pattaya and search bags: if they find Viagra or other drugs and the guy has no prescription for it, they threaten to take him to the station unless he pays his "fine" on the spot. I seem to remember also reading about a certain section of Sukhumvit where they might pull the same thing, but don't quote me. Anyone else remember reading that? It also could have been on another forum.
I was searched twice myself already in Ekkamai. Both times they asked for my passport but didn't even open it. Looks like the cover page is enough nowadays, I must come from a very important part of the world where every citizen is a VIP or something :) Anyhow:

Were you actually talking about normal vitamins like vitamin A, B, C, etc.?
If that's the case, that wouldn't be a prob. They know their stuff and they know what they are looking for. The second time they searched me I had many other kinds of pills in my bag (asthma medication, various antibiotics, etc.) and he didn't even look twice at them.

Pharmacies in Thailand are not allowed to sell them either. They probably pay the police for that privilege. So should everyone do if caught carrying prescription drugs.

Oh come on, it is not really a scam and most people caught with prescription drugs in Thailand without having a proper prescription have actually bought them in Thailand. They have absolutely no right to possess these drugs, neither in Europe nor in Thailand. In Europe we're more lenient and control the supply side much more than the demand side but that does not mean that it is legal to buy them without a prescription.
To me such a campaign is an exaggeration.

For medical history reasons I travel with a few days' supply of opiate-based painkillers. They would certainly be illegal in Thailand if obtained without a prescription. My doctor prescribed them to me as a one-off prescription, and in order to receive them I handed that prescription into the pharmacy, so now I have no record of the prescription (this is the UK we're talking about). How do I cover myself? This must happen to others. Would a letter (in English) from my GP be enough to fend off the attention of the local police? Any thoughts?

Why don't you go to a public hospital in Thailand (yes, foreigners can do that), explain your problem and get a prescription there from a local doctor? Public hospitals are really cheap in Thailand, even for foreigners, and it should not be very difficult to obtain the appropriate prescription, especially if you already know what you need.
Would a letter (in English) from my GP be enough to fend off the attention of the local police? Any thoughts?
A definite YES. Especially if u know that you have the right to possess such medicine. Stand your ground and keep this letter with you, no prob for sure.
FYI French prescriptions look like letters.

It is true that the administrative staff at public hospitals often don't speak much English (if any), but the doctors usually do. What they ask in the registration form is very basic information: given names, surname, age, current location (the address of your hotel is sufficient if you are a tourist). They usually will check your weight and blood pressure. If you can't explain what is your problem to the administrative staff, they would very likely fetch one available doctor who can speak English to help.

I will only speak of want I know when it comes to the U.S., with your legal percription from the U.S. take the original bottle with all the percription information on the bottle medicine that you obtain from Thailand into this bottle. F.Y.I. I have been doing this for years knowing several former employee friends and managers that are top TSA people now. In regards to this God help us all because these guys that run TSA now particularly in California are some real stupid idiots.
When going through through TSA, they look at my plastic bag with my so call percription bottle and neve have I had a problem. They're TSA no Doctors!When I come check points in Tawian, Japan, Thailand never have I ever been question. Asthma inhalers with the original U.S box I get replacement in Thailand and put them into the original percription box. My friends who are retired in Thailand do the same thing with their Viagra etc... and put them in old bottles.
Now in regards to hospital that speak English... in all the years never have I gone to a hospital in Pattaya, Bangkok/Pattaya have I ever from day one had a problem speaking only English myself been unable to gain access from registering or unable to explain or understand what I needed to convey to a Thai Doctor. From my experience from Dental to emergency been able to speak to a Doctor.Cost... you can see a Doctor for example at Bangkok/Pattaya total cost to get a percription would be 550 baht. That is ten minutes of their time.. tell them just like a American Doctor " you have having a hard time getting it up " At our age who is going to challenge that! right there your percription, a small wait then to the pill counter and pay your standard tap along with the medication. Tell the lady you want a copy of the percription!* Keep it! Keep the bottle for the future! now you can buy more on the street and still it into the original bottle. Now you have everything when you are stop! Percentage these guys can't even read a passport! They are basically stupid IMHO!
When it comes to Vitamins, I have brought in 10 to 15 bottles of Vitamins of various types. Been stop at the check point once and pay the dickhead 500 baht. Majority of the time even when it goes through the scanner they don't know what they are looking for... When you pack... put some here and put some there never all in same area. I wrap bottles in my dirty stain underwear, my carry on has a zipper area in the bottom and I put case of condoms and etc... zip it up... then I pack all my clothes in... spreading my dirty boxers throughout. If they can put up with the stains and you can put up the laughter it might all be worth it just to get a few pills through!

So I can imagine it would be difficult to get a prescription for something that I am not suffering from right now. And very difficult to get opiate-based painkillers.

In private hospitals that's a completely different story and the nurses are prettier.
I have never ever got medicine from Germany or France with any kind of legal prescription paper on the package. Probably a US thing.

We've definitely had different practitioners then. By the way I agree with you (although I wouldn't send a tourist friend there) that for basic medical care, they're just about perfect. Most of the time I was in and out within a couple of hours and a couple hundred bahts lighter only. I may or may not have to pay anything in a public hospital in Europe but if I'm done in only 4 hours I consider myself very lucky.
I don't think I would do a HIV test in there though. Dunno why.

pattaya is much more violate and dangerous than i remember from over the years.
1. went to superbabys go-go which is famous for sp that cater to japanese and korean clients (which i am not). no language skills of sp (in english), but agreed to barfine with short time later (she told me 1.5) so we went to lucifer for a quick drink. no problems at lucifer (which usually also means not lady-boy), and returned to my hotel. at the hotel, she says "no boom boom for farang". i told her i paid the barfine and offered her the 1.5. she refused. we went back to superbabys and i explained nicely to mamasan and waitress what had happened. i asked for sp who would do the short time, and offered to pay the difference. no dice. spoke with manager who stated that i had to pay again bar fine and short time for different sp. spoke to japanese owner. he refused to talk with me (even after i bowed respectfully and spoke to him in japanese). i waited patiently, they wouldn't budge so i left.
spoke with security guard of my hotel, he indicated she was lady-boy (after i tipped him of course). on way back to walking street from hotel, saw japanese manager outside, and nicely indicated that i worry sending my japanese and korean clients there (which is true) because of my previous issue, and possible ladyboys. he retaliated by taking a swing at me, grazing my forehead, followed by the thai employees giving full frontal assault. barely got away unrep001hed (small bruise and watch missing).
2. went back hotel, cleaned up and changed. determined not to let this ruin my night, i went out again to lucifer. on my way, saw superhottie walking with another sp. she came over and offered me short time. we walked and talked and i explained previous situation that i didn't want ladyboy. she ensured me that if she was, i did not have to pay. i told her that my "brother" would be checking her id, and she didn't seem to worry. she made a quick stop for some lube (should of been first warning), and we went to hotel. security guard gave green light. my spidey senses were still tingling, so i did the checklist a) no adams apple b) soft hair c) no extra rib d) hit like a girl e) no square shoulders f) working parts. i still wasn't satisified and realized something was up when tried to enter. just finished myself off and send her packing (after reluctantly paying). i think she promised to give the security guard a cut, if he didn't sqwak.

No one is asking anyone here to stop going to the hospital whether it is a public or private if it works for you or for whatever reasons cost etc...?
The suggestion since there was no mentioned of public or private was if you need a piece of paper so you can carry a specify medicine or just to beat the system by getting around the cops searches here. Then it's up to each individual how they are going to proceed. If I tired of all the B.S. I'll paid the little extra and go to a private hospital just to get what I need for the future. This is very similar to P4P sex... Go Go Bars, Walking Stree Go Go's or Beach Road?
Do what you got to do to see someone that speaks better English to get the paper documents. Even in a public hospital without speaking they should know what you need. Pull down you zipper, pull out your thing, and place then limp thing on the counter, you will get lots of laughs but you just might get your documents. I'm pretty sure they will know your problem without you ever saying a word?

Since I'm always asked for 700Bht I assumed that it was a standard rate, like the 500/1000/150Bht in oilies. I guess everything is negotiable, but I would worry about demotivating the girl for the sake of 100Bht or so.

First time I heard this concept it blew me away too but I've learn that it's quite the norm in many shops. Phuket is an overdeveloped beach resort (IMO it was much nicer 30 years ago), but the beaches are still pretty and clean. It has only a fraction of the bars and women Pattaya has, but you will definitely hook up with girls there.
In other words, the decision is up to you. Do you want to swim and relax on some nice beaches and then later go to town visit some bars and get laid? Or, do you want to concentrate on girls and drinking and nothing else?

This service is easy to find among providers over 30 - perhaps 10-20% do so provide. For quite a few of them it is their big selling point that keeps them busy despite not looking so good anymore.

ThanksIn Bangkok the three main P4P areas are Soi Cowboy, Nana Plaza and Patpong night market (which are only a few BTS stops from each other, or you could even walk from one location to the next). Those areas have a good concentration of Go-Gos, plus beer bars. For body massage/sex massage/Turkish bath, around Prince Hotel (about Baht 100 taxi ride) are a dozen or so fish-bowl places, with 10. 40 women per fish-bowl.
-I prefer Pattaya, and to stay on Walking Street (my next choice would be the Soi 7 area due the proximity to Soi 6 and the beer bar concentration at Soi 7 and 8). On Walking Street there's www.galaxysuitespattaya.com, www.Diamondbeachhotel.com or www.swissfood.net.

I don't recall entering a contest here. Like Chris Rock said, the people with the least shit always have to say the most shit. You never see a regular poster critiquing another regular poster. It's always the lurkers or fly-by-nighters that want to sneak in the back door and try to get things stirred up.

First I don't give money to girls I just meet or just know so it's not like I'm throwing money to every tramp that walks by. Second its not every day I'm donating 100 USD. But I travel to PI, BKK and recently Chonburi often so I get known at certain places and get known by a decent amount of girls.
If a girl is in a pinch and need some cash I don't mind fronting 1. 3 K baht (or a couple thousand peso) to them. Usually in return they will come over when I call them, come before work or after work to my room saving me bar fines, service me for no pay later to pay off their debt at a reduced rate (2 for 1), bring over or introduce a new girl to me (fresh meat on the market), do a three some or offer up anal, video, pictures, etc. To me when they don't do with most others. But they are girls I've been with before and from places that know me well.
Say for example I go to Walking Street and I pick up a girl and she pulls a "I only want short time BS to me after we start". Or I nail her two times and she wants to run for the hills and take just taxi money to get the hell away from me (has been known to happen), so I got some names and numbers of girls to come over at 3 am who know what I like and what to do and will show up without any fuss or muss. Or say I want to tap something at 9 or 10 am (pretty hard to find quality at that hour in Pattay atleast for me) so I can just send some text messages and get one to come over easily.

So for me to front up some cash it's not a big deal and the ROI (return on investments) usually come back double what I put out. True and of course I've had some investments that did not pan out but I'm equal or above in most things. I do better at this investment then the stock market.
Recent examples. A girl gets a new apartment (7,000 baht a month), is studying english (4 K a month), and is taking care of family in Isaan (15 K a month). She can't make rent she says. She has no sponsor. She asks for some cash to help that month due to fewer customers. I front some cash, 4,000 baht. She says she will open up her apartment to me to stay there (soi AR). Can bring girls with me and / or she will bring girls to join us. Normally or lately I've stayed at a serviced apartment where a 1 bedroom apartment is 800 baht a night on Soi AR. So now at worst case, I get a fall back apartment to take girls to, and or I get her and a friend of hers and other favors, or just stay with her as she and her friends know I'm a major whatre.
How do I know this will come true? Because when she lived on Naklur (spelling?) Soi 27 I had her old room key and nailed her room mates for free (Feb 2010). She would stay in my apartment, I'd wake up motorbike to her room and nail her room mates. I paid their rent that month, 4 K, and I got free access to their room and between the legs of the room mates (yes even a few times while they were talking on the phone to their sponsors.) for two plus weeks (18 days).
Another example. Girl needs to sell her home, she already owes me money, she asked for a few more baht. I did, and she did sell her home and she put the money in my K bank account. This is a girl who brought me 3 girls to BKK (including her younger sister) to stay at GP with me and did everything we could imagine. But before I give a girl 100 bucks I know them and start with small funds and see how the performance and such is. But for 3,000 baht (100 USD) investment now and then it can pay you back in spades.
HOWEVER. I'm not a two week wonder, I repeat, my stays are 2 to 3 weeks long every visit and I am there often. The bar owners and mamsan's know me. If a girl royally screws me over she knows I know her bosses. And I generally run things past the mamasan / owners in the bars in PI and Thai first to see which girls are full of bolabola / Ko hok. And it is surprising how much the other bar girls talk about their co workers (and about girls from other bars) so it's easy to figure out who to deal with.
We all got our own style, but I'll invest in certain bars and it has served me well. arrived in pattaya last night for the simple reason that my company deemed bangkok to be unsafe.

Not that hard of a concept really but one that goes against what most mongers do and one I'll get flamed for but we all have our own styles.
First I don't give money to girls I just meet or just know so it's not like I'm throwing money to every tramp that walks by. Second its not every day I'm donating 100 USD. But I travel to PI, BKK and recently Chonburi often so I get known at certain places and get known by a decent amount of girls.
If a girl is in a pinch and need some cash I don't mind fronting 1. 3 K baht (or a couple thousand peso) to them. Usually in return they will come over when I call them, come before work or after work to my room saving me bar fines, service me for no pay later to pay off their debt at a reduced rate (2 for 1), bring over or introduce a new girl to me (fresh meat on the market), do a three some or offer up anal, video, pictures, etc. To me when they don't do with most others. But they are girls I've been with before and from places that know me well.

Recent examples. A girl gets a new apartment (7,000 baht a month), is studying english (4 K a month), and is taking care of family in Isaan (15 K a month). She can't make rent she says. She has no sponsor. She asks for some cash to help that month due to fewer customers. I front some cash, 4,000 baht. She says she will open up her apartment to me to stay there (soi AR). Can bring girls with me and / or she will bring girls to join us. Normally or lately I've stayed at a serviced apartment where a 1 bedroom apartment is 800 baht a night on Soi AR. So now at worst case, I get a fall back apartment to take girls to, and or I get her and a friend of hers and other favors, or just stay with her as she and her friends know I'm a major whatre.
How do I know this will come true? Because when she lived on Naklur (spelling?) Soi 27 I had her old room key and nailed her room mates for free (Feb 2010). She would stay in my apartment, I'd wake up motorbike to her room and nail her room mates. I paid their rent that month, 4 K, and I got free access to their room and between the legs of the room mates (yes even a few times while they were talking on the phone to their sponsors.) for two plus weeks (18 days).
Another example. Girl needs to sell her home, she already owes me money, she asked for a few more baht. I did, and she did sell her home and she put the money in my K bank account. This is a girl who brought me 3 girls to BKK (including her younger sister) to stay at GP with me and did everything we could imagine. But before I give a girl 100 bucks I know them and start with small funds and see how the performance and such is. But for 3,000 baht (100 USD) investment now and then it can pay you back in spades.
HOWEVER. I'm not a two week wonder, I repeat, my stays are 2 to 3 weeks long every visit and I am there often. The bar owners and mamsan's know me. If a girl royally screws me over she knows I know her bosses. And I generally run things past the mamasan / owners in the bars in PI and Thai first to see which girls are full of bolabola / Ko hok. And it is surprising how much the other bar girls talk about their co workers (and about girls from other bars) so it's easy to figure out who to deal with.
We all got our own style, but I'll invest in certain bars and it has served me well. When one girl goes out of circulation (sponsored or her sponsor is in town) I get her new number, she still sees me on the side, and she also recommends replacements or temp girls to fill in for them when they just can't meet up.
I'm not making merit. I look at it as investment in getting proper services on demand.

The way this works, both in theory and in practice as it is does every single day (Q.E.D.), is that it the market develops to accommodate varying price points. That development brings with it more of everything -- more high budget and more low budget, more sense of opportunity which attracts more girls, etc.
Like real estate, consumer products, and pretty much everything else that is sold in the world, the "luxury" segment plays a very large role in the development of the cheaper segments. Where there is no premium segment, the cheap goods are almost always available only for the truly poor, of very shoddy quality, and not available to or even really known by most of us.

Your theory doesn't work because you're citing a man who goes into a gogo where the offer price for a girl is say 2000 baht/ST and he gives her 32,000/ST simply because he wants to flash it.

most likely true, but that isn't all. first of all there are less supply, since the poverty is lower and the population increase is low now in thailand. there are some foreign girls at least in bangkok (middle eastern and russian cater mostly the indian and arab clientel), than african girls. also, from other asian countries, for example reasently i talked with two philippine girls whose work now in bankok. but, also true many more thai girls work abroad than foreign girls work in thailand.

Most likely true, but that isn't all. First of all there are less supply, since the poverty is lower and the population increase is low now in Thailand. There are some foreign girls at least in Bangkok (middle eastern and Russian cater mostly the Indian and Arab clientel), than African girls. Also, from other Asian countries, for example reasently I talked with two Philippine girls whose work now in Bankok. But, also true many more Thai girls work abroad than foreign girls work in Thailand.
Thecost of living in Bangkok and Pattaya is high, so the prices for p4p do also rise. The Thai currency is strong against European and US currency as in many Asian countries now. And last but not least Punter pay serious cash for pretty girls, so why should they go for small money?
I can have cheaper P4P in my Home Town Frankfurt, even with prettier girls. I still spend my hollyday in Thailand, but it was not like before a easy decision. I had plans just to stay a few days in Thailand and than head to Jakarta. But, I got a little lazy, is still funny in the clubs and I know already some pretty freelancer who provide decent service for normal prices. So, I have doubt, that I will buy a ticket to Jakarta. It's most likely alot of hazzle to find the right hotel and to get familar with the situation there.
But, that means also I have to extent my Visa, since my Hollyday is longer than 30 days.
Or can a someone give good advice about the best airline to Jakarta, decent, gf and not too expensive Hotel in the center of the action in Jakarta?

Finally, someone here who understands economics. I've given up trying to explain how giving a generous tip does not in fact 'ruin the market for all of us', though I am still waiting to hear if getting freebie helps the market for all of us, and if not, then why not.IMHO pussy is a commodity such as salt, gold, rice. I mean with 6.8 billion units on this planet you gotta figure that 3.4 billion came with a pussy as standard equipment. 1 baht of gold = 1 baht of gold = 1 baht of gold. Why would I pay 3000 baht for 1 baht of gold on Soi 8 when I could pay 1000 baht on Soi 6? When there is a pussy glut such as there is in Thailand at any given time, I'm not going to pay as if I was in the U.A.E. where pussy is scarce.
On the surface I might b^tch and try to get the point across that people shouldn't pay more than necessary. However underneath I'm not personally worried about it because at the end of the day at 38 years old I'm still young enough and have plenty of game to back me up. I just like to look out for the next monger.
