I was in both Pattaya and Ko Samui last March. I had a problem in Samui, and I just now posted it in the Samui forum. But that forum has very few posts, so I decided I had a better chance of getting a response in the Pattaya forum. Besides, this is a problem that probably also happens in Pattaya, so you guys might have a good answer. Here is my post:
I was in Ko Samui last March. In both Chaweng and Lamai. I had a problem in Lamai and wanted to hear some opinions about what to do.
It was pretty late, close to 2AM when the bars close. I was at the big bar complex in Lamai near the boxing arena.
I was talking to a girl at one of the bars there and was asked by someone if I wanted to take her so I did. Looks were OK, slightly above average. Then I saw another girl there. Petite, slim and very pretty. Well above average. I asked if she wanted to go also and she said yes.

New Law: Bounty Hunters are on the lookout for foreigners owning Thai land or Thai Property. Yes, another one aimed at killing of tourism and foreign business interests. The new law states bounty hunters will get 20% of the land or property market value. Amazing Thailand. Always just amazes me. See full story below.
Thai ombudsmen is drafting a carrot-and-stick law to protect Thai lands from illegal foreign nominee ownership, while developers and consultants suggest more legal transparency, a longer leasehold period and higher foreigner property taxes to prevent nominees.
Siracha: Think of the children.
Ombudsman Siracha Charoenpanij said the new law would comprise punishment for companies offering advice to foreigners on how to hold Thai property by disguising their legal transaction. This would include law firms and consultants.
The existing law enforced by the Lands Department requires foreigners found holding Thai property to transfer the plot to someone else or sell it within 180 days.
"The new law includes a reward to anyone providing information about foreigners owning land through nominees. They will get 20% of the market price of that piece of land as a reward after the plot is sold," he said at a seminar on foreign property ownership yesterday held by the Thai Appraisal Foundation.
The new law would also deport foreigners found guilty of holding land plots in Thailand illegally.
Ombudsmen will submit the draft to parliament this year, and Mr Siracha thinks there is backing for the bill.
"Anyone related to the property business may be unhappy with this bill as it will make the market rigid. But this law can help protect the land for the next generation of Thais," he said.
He pointed to a new scheme where foreigners disguise their ownership similar to multi-level marketing, where they are buying shares of an agricultural company that grows rice on large plots in the northeast.
"I've heard there was a broker buying land plots throughout a tambon in Surin to cultivate Hom Mali rice," he said."If such an act is not prevented, will there be any land left for our children?"
Suphin Mechuchep, managing director of property consultant Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) (Thailand) , said any new law should not weaken Thailand's competitiveness. Yet too free a market would lead to a bubble, so balance is needed, she added.
"We should have transparency if we want foreigners to comply," she said.
She suggested clarity in regulations so foreigners could estimate their investment. Longer leasehold periods such as 50 or 90 years would lower their risk from the current 30 years, she added.
When laws are clarified, she accepted Thailand may charge higher taxes on foreigner property transactions than on those of Thais.
Atip Bijanonda, president of the construction and real estate business department of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, agreed there needs to be balance while still welcoming foreign investment.
He suggested the government set guidelines for foreigners, forbidding their purchase of land banks, farm land, property in border areas, and locations related to the country's security. Foreigners are permitted to buy land in industrial estates because they generate income and employment. Residential units near industrial estates are allowed for foreign investors or executives working there to bring their compatriots to visit Thailand.

But nope, she was not "creeped out" or at all put off (and, as I mentioned, seemed to be bewildered when I started my discussions with mamasan and the male manager.) Indeed, I saw some of the other customers aggressively groping the girls and that is not my style. I hardly think that discussions of this nature are unusual in the line of trade they have chosen, and settling matters avoids disappointment later. 1) Normally, some of the ladies in go-go bars are not expected or obligated to go with customers. Usually, they have monthly quotas and incentives for selling drinks (and often, but not always, bar fines). Filling the drink quota is important to bargirls as they make 30-40 baht for each drink they sell (and this pays for food and whiskey after work). In the end, however, they will always do what it takes to sell a drink.
2) There are many reasons go-go dancers prefer to stay in the bar rather than go out (bar fine) with a customer. Having their period. Don't like the customer (smell, skin color, attitude, stinginess). Sick. Shy. Etc. Etc. If the lady only speaks Thai or Isaan / Lao, expect to have some issues with her if you cannot communicate. Some ladies do not have IDs and cannot go to hotels (especially the ones from Lao).
3) There is a method of communicating with Thai people to solve problems that can be effective, but it is never confrontational. Management must "save face," above all, in front of their employees. You need to show respect and generosity to gain trust, then you fall back on the "good will" you have built if you need to be considered seriously. Prior to my retirement I was using Northwest which is Delta now but their flight arriving to the airport arrived just before midnight. Well I am going to make another great trip to the lovely land of smiles. Wonder if this one is going to be on par with the last trip! Sampled these ladies las time may see one or two again but I have an agenda set up on who's next. The 17th can't come fast enough!
have you used either of these? are they good places to stay?i have not stayed at the august suites. i have stayed at the page 10 hotel, in suite 808.
the location is ideal. you can walk to beach road very easily, especially now that construction on soi 10 has been completed. from there you can catch the baht bus headed south to walking street. if you prefer the up-and-coming punter locations on soi lk metro and soi buakaow, you can walk there easily as well. and if soi 6 is calling your name, the baht bus headed north on second road is steps away. all usual amenities (7-11, laundry, restaurants, atms, money exchange) are close by. being near the food stalls and night market on soi buakaow is very handy when you want to grab a quick cheap bite.
the page 10 is a newer hotel with a hip contemporary vibe. it is patronized by tourists and families who are in pattaya for the standard beach holiday. but the place is girl friendly and i never had any trouble bringing a girl up to my room. no joiner fee. in my suite the mattress was rather hard and storage was rather limited. the rooftop pool area is very nice. there is even a little cafe where you can get drinks or snacks and a shaded area with table and chairs. i enjoyed using the wi-fi up there to get some work done in the afternoon. water pressure in the shower was ok, but i would have liked hotter water. wi-fi wasn't blazing fast, but it was reliable.
the air conditioning was connected to the card key, so it was off whenever i was out of the room. when i came back the room was rather hot and stuffy and i had to wait for it to cool down. moreover, the thermostat operated differently to most hotels. you have three choice for the fan speed: low, medium and high. there is no "automatic" setting. if u-turn on the air conditioning, the fan is always running. this is not good. first, the fan is really loud. so loud that you can't hear the television, play music or talk on the phone (even at the lowest setting). second, it is very difficult to achieve a comfortable temperature because the constantly-blowing fan makes the room too cold, even if you set the thermostat to, say. 26 degrees celsius. the only way to make it work is to manually turn the system on and off as required. this is a real pain in the neck. and when you're sleeping it's impossible. as the programmers say, it's not a bug, it's a "feature."
the main issue at the page 10 is noise. there is a beer bar complex at the southwest corner of second road and soi 10, and there are are two live bands every night. the first is at the corner, and the second is about 100 feet farther west along the south side of soi 10. in my opinion, it's the first one that's the bigger problem. the volume on their speakers is far far too loud for the small audience. even on a good night the band is playing to 50 people. it's a mystery why they need a "spinal tap 11" setting on the amps. there are two singers, a man and a woman. the man is worse is this regard. i theorize his hearing has been damaged by years of standing on front of over-cranked amps and he needs to have the volume jacked up so he can hear himself.
unfortunately, the other band, not be outdone, feels compelled to crank the volume on their equipment. the result is a "battle of the bands" taking place about 150 feet from the front door of the page 10. despite the double sliding glass doors and heavy drapes you're going to be annoyed by this racket until the beer bar complex calls it quits at 3:00 am.
i'm told the rooms on the north side of the page 10 hotel, facing the mall, are not as noisy. but i can't confirm that personally. i can report that even up on the eighth floor, even with double sliding glass doors and heavy drapes, the noise was irritating. if you're a light sleeper this might be an issue.

Just a quick report on three days escape from Bangkok to Pattaya.
Rain has been heavy this year, and some downpours interrupted the action, so hard to gauge what the activity levels of the bars would really be.
Soi 6 was rewarding as usual, although I had to make a couple of trips up and down the soi to find my taste in the afternoon. My late afternoon trip from Bangkok to Pattaya wasn't filled with much anticipation: I was too tired from three busy days in the capital and so fell asleep for the duration of the trip. The Bell Bus service, (though a little late in picking me up at Livingstone's before the transfer to a bigger bus at the airport) worked out nicely, especially with the van dropoff at my hotel and the value 340 Baht price. You could learn to scuba dive for one or take a day out at Million Year Stone Parkss, it's a nice day and some of the gardens are beautiful. It's a good place to take a girl, they generally appreciate a day or half day away from Pattaya.

But, can I deposit foreign cash, or does it all have to be 1st converted to baht? And do you have a bank to recommend, or may be it doesn't matter.

In Pattaya the only Bank and Branch that seem to do it with little paperwork is Kasikorn (excuse the spelling if wrong, Green sign bank. The particular one is at Big C extra, formerly Carrefour located on Pattaya Klang. Go upstair the escalator and it is right in front and Home pro is on the right. Opens at 10am. They only need your passport and a pay receipt at the resident you are staying. Can be a resort, hotel, apartment etc. This branch doesn't seem to picky. They can also change your money, recently I brought back cash from the states. I compare their rates with the booth downstairs next to the donut shop and they were higher compare to Kasikorn. They were also much higher than a few other places I checked including their main branch on Second Road (Bangkok Bank. Kasikorn also has a booth outside the entrance to Big C. And their rates were lower than the booth inside.

The SW / FL action is more concentrated. But the night time GoGo's are basically similiar. And the overall quality and price points are certainly higher in BKK.
Bangkok is a huge city compared to Pattaya, so if you want to primarily monger I would suggest staying near Nana Plaza or Soi Cowboy. Personally I prefer Pattaya during the week and Bangkok on weekends. YMMV.

LBMIt seems different even from branch to branch. I checked my records. I have on account with Kasikorn in Bangkok and one in Pattaya. In Pattaya (in 2010) they charged 100 for the card and 500 annual fee. In Bangkok I got the card for free (in 2008) and the annual fee is 200.
The nice thing is that when I wire money from Hong Kong to either account, it arrives within the same day when done in the morning.
Logistics:
I flew Cathay Pacific for the first time, a airline based out of Hong Kong. The fare was $1562 and the lay-overs in HK were short. I thought the service was excellent and had no issues with the carry-ons like I did with China Air last trip. The planes seemed to have a bit more leg room as well, or maybe I'm just getting shorter in my old age. The only complaint I had was the food; I thought it basically sucked.
From BKK to Pattaya I used Mr. Keak taxi service again for 1000 baht (including tolls) , and on the return, it was 900 baht. Both drivers were professional and on time, and they both blew down the highway; both trips were quick!
Money:
I cashed in just enough at the airport to set-up my phone, buy adult beverages for the trip, and pay the driver. The rate was just over 30 to 1 at the airport. In Pattaya, I was cashing in new crisps 100s and 50s, and got up to 31. 45 to 1 on several different days.
On the way to Pattaya, I started dialing for dollars and wasn't too pleased with the results. My first call; I'm married now. My second call worked out and she would meet me at the hotel when I arrived. But my third, fourth, fifth, and sixth calls; they were back home or the numbers were not in service. No worries, after all, I was headed for Pattaya.
Hotel: Stayed at the Penthouse once again and had a great stay; see short report in the PH thread. I'm surprised they keep letting me stay there considering I do my best to flood the room out each and every stay.
Day 1.
Showed up at the hotel and had one of my favorite girls in Pattaya waiting for me in the lobby. She is about goofy as hell, but just as passionate as well. She helped me unpack and then we fired up the jacuzzi. We played for a couple of hours; but I was wearing down quickly and needed some food. I headed over to Sin Bin for food and drinks.
Across from Sin Bin, there is a small massage place called,"The Best." So I figured I needed a massage to work the jet lag out of me and went over to check on the prices. She had some of the X-Zone and Baron girls working for her and she seemed happy with her new home. Last stop was in Champion to check on Mamasan Sue. Day 2.

I prefer the Marriott, but when I can't get the $118 rate (due to a convention or some other short term demand situation), I find the Tim Boutique and the Areca Lodge as more than acceptable alternatives with substantial savings thrown in. All I really want from a hotel / motel is girl friendly with a security safe, clean, quiet, and a good swimming pool.
Marriott 4.25* around $118 – good hotel and location. Great swimming pool.
Tim Boutique 3.5* $66 – not as good as the Marriott but pretty good. Quiet, friendly and nice rooftop pool.
Areca Lodge 3.5* $76 for the 60sq meter luxury family suite. Acceptable motel style hotel, huge room with good pool and interesting location.

Seems more than enough for my many beers, bar girl drinks, meals and 1. 2 pops a day. I have used the ATM across from the Hot Tuna Bar (next to what else; 7-11) on walking street and never had any problems. As noted, $100 and $50 bills US, bring the highest exchange rate. Supposedly, using a debit at an ATM gets you a better exchange rate than using a credit card. Just make sure you let your bank know the dates your going so they don't cancel your card.

The big difference would be that Mamasan Miki owns 50% of the place and she is proud of it. I've known her for 10+ years and I know she really cares for the girls and the customers. But all silliness aside, you actually asked a pertinent question.
Personally, I always take a girl back to my room on a LT basis. For starters it is just more economical. For the small extra price you pay, you get to enjoy her a whole night, which of course translates to a few pops before going to sleep and once more in the morning. It's all pretty predictable.
