A couple logistical questions. I've read differing opinions and just want to know any recent experiences. Has anyone had trouble paying for Uber with a card (instead of cash)? And has anyone had trouble using a card to pay for Rappi? (Not sure if Rappi is the most common delivery service in Rio.).
Thanks in advance.I use both and I don't have any issue with using card on them. IFood might be more common in Brazil than Rappi, but it's a bit harder to register and I haven't use it.

Yeah, did 20 rides in Rio. Last few days. Neither of 2 usa credit cards worked on the app but they did allow me to request rides using cash. However 90% of Uber drivers claimed they were not paid (liars. Scammers) so I ended up paying twice, one time cash later on credit card. Really. So I found a way to deposit to an Uber account on the app. That solved the problem. Then suddenly my credit cards started working. Go figure. Rappi no info.Thanks for all of the responses. That scam is exactly why I asked. I used to pay Rappi in cash. But twice in Medellin, the Rappi said I never paid. Of course, Rappi was no help. Like they think I just stole the food from the Rappi driver and ran away? When they have my address? LOL So to know uber drivers run the same scam affirms I should pay via card if at all possible.

Went to Rio for 4 days in*December 2022. Contemplated 6 days but somehow thought that was too long 4 days will be plenty. Here's how the cliff notes summary.
Right ideas but executed in the wrong order. And a lot of Hindsight 20/20 rule.
Day 1 Thursday: technically landed late Wednesday, day started Thursday. Cheap hotel in Centro then moved to AirBnB in Copacabana,*.
Would later find out that hotel was 3 blocks down the street from a prive*high rise. Met up with one other ISG went to 4 x4.
Some amazing pics in 4 x4, thought maybe I'll do this on my special night. Lets hit the prive. Would later find out 4 x4 is M-F only closed weekends, made it a plan to go back Friday.
Went to the high rise prive, walked up to one entrance, saw mail collection room and fence closed. Wing man couldn't figure out why closed says still open. I would find out 2 days later, there's a north and south entrance. We were at a locked south door, the correct north doors with door man and elevators was 150 ft to our left.

They are saying there is supposed to be an E visa so you do not have to travel to a Brazilian consulate, but since it was not up and running, I did not want to take that chance. I'm hoping later this spring they Evies I will be up and running smoothly and then I will make it back to Brazil. There is just some kind of magic to Brazil not just the woman, but the whole culture in Vibe that I just don't feel anywhere else. Incredibly jealous of those of you that live live there now.

I'll try to post this week with my experiences. Rio vets, I apologize. I doubt you'll learn anything from this Rio rookie. But maybe something I post will help a noob.
First impression was mixed. The trip is long. I left mid-day Saturday and arrived to my hotel at noon on Sunday. I knew Sunday would be a waste of a day and it was. So not unexpected but it is a journey. Flew through SP and connected to Rio. Airports, immigration, and customs was a breeze. Uber was simple. Only thing that confused me was finding the 2nd floor. LOL. You actually take 2 different escalators from baggage claim. (At least I had to.).
Uber driver took an interior route to Copa, which is not very scenic. But it was uneventful. The fare was $20 USD. Paid with card. (I did Uber Comfort). Checked into Windsor Excelsior. I booked knowing it was not girl friendly. I suspect you have about a 10% chance of sneaking a girl in. But I don't plan to try. The hotel is nice. The room is comfortable. No problems at all. Is it luxury? No. But comfortable, clean, no complaints at all. View of the beach and christ the redeemer. Awesome rooftop. If GF is not important to you, I'd recommend.

You should try Solarium.It is definitely on my list. I'm not certain why, but my expectations for termas in general has lowered. So I'm hoping to visit a closer termas for visit number one. 4 x4 seemed to be the gold standard but I might wait until later this week. But Solarium definitely has my interest based on OddsMaker's recent review. I'd prefer to relax a bit without 10 girls staring at you in a line waiting to pick. (I have to laugh at myself sometimes. I mean, damn, if picking a girl at a termas is the worst thing that happens today. LOL).

Now coming into Brazil, the amount is much lower. I'm fairly sure their limit is 10,000 reais. Which means you would need to declare any amount over roughly $2,060 US dollars. I'm not quite as confident in that limit so someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Why make it so complicated? You are arriving in Aeroporto Santos Dumont and going to Copacabana, propably with some luggage. Taxi won't be expensive as it's quite a short ride. Uber will be even cheaper. Do you prefer getting a VLT card and head to the metro, getting a metro card, bring your luggage down to the metro platform, go to Copacabana, head up with your luggage and walk to the place where you're going to stay? Also, why should a taxi be cheaper from Carioca than Santos Dumont, when Carioca is further away?

...Have you thought about enrolling in a Portuguese class? There should be some available by week so can take a class for a week when you want to. You will get to know some people too. My personal experience is that it's easier to know people in cities or places with fewer foreigners.

I did experience few cancellations late at night in Centro and in Copacabana during rush hours. It wasn't really a problem for me unless I was trying to get to a place in time. After 1 or 2 cancellations I switch to User Comfort which always worked, so I never tried User Black or taxi.
I remember seeing yellow and white cabs. You will see vehicles marked clearly as taxi waiting in front of 4 x4, but if you are not sure I suggest asking the 4 x4 security / door man to help you identify legitimate taxis.

Been visiting Rio since 2012 . Never been to VM and don't ever plan on going. To each his own.

Just bring (or have available by way of ATM), a decent amount of money to go with your troubles. It's all good, as having money will (in most cases) solve your P4P dilemmas, whatever the difficulty.
As mentioned, during Carnival time/days, is probably not the best time for mongering. Most businesses tend to shutdown around and over the 4-day period, and a modicum of girls, tend to want to head back home (to wherever) and party with friends and family. That said, there still remains a modest P4P scene around Copa and Centro, if you know where to look. (Note: Things do slowly go back to normal just after Carnival.)
But if you're also very much interested with, taking in the Brazilian culture, food, music, dance (Samba), sights and the arts, then visiting Rio during Carnival time is a good time, and is a great idea. As also mentioned, things will be a tad more expensive, if not slightly more chaotic.

I had almost a similar incident where three guys were trying to corner me.
I was walking at night maybe 11 pm down copa beach streets and one guy was coming towards me and two other guys were coming from behind.
I always swivel my head when walking to let people know I'm watching.
I walked across the street onto the beach and they still followed.
I went back and crossed the street casually and they still were on my tail.
One of them started to say something and try to close in on me and that's when I just booked it and ran towards a hotel.

For the most part Brazilian businesses have not problem accepting cash and return exact change, having smaller denominations like 10's, 20's etc. Definitely helps. I don't think a small business would be happy to give change for 100/200 real bill for a very small purchase. I have occasionally encountered businesses annoyed to deal with cash and return change back.

During my recent trip, I had only a backpack and was the 2nd person in the line to board LATAM flight from CGH to SDU, the employee at the gate asked all the folks with small / personal item to form a separate line and let everyone with carry-ONS get on board. We were the last one to board which was stupid. I understand they want to have people with carry-ONS to use the overhead luggage storage but forcing those with personal item to board last is not a best way to handle it. Even in this case there is no incentive for arriving early and being in the line first. Chalk them as only in Brazil!

For the second time this year, I made a return, after a decade's absence, to a mongering pilgrimage destination (is "mongerage" in the Urban Dictionary? I stayed in Centro at the Windsor Guanabara, for its easy transport access via metro to another part of the city where I had a work assignment for a couple of days. I checked if the hotel was girl friendly, although escorts or girls I met at venues were not my main plan for the trip (just as well, based on the recent report about the hotel not really being guest friendly; plus the mattresses were too soft for good sex and double beds apparently are two small twin beds side by side). But overall I liked staying there, for example for the large breakfast buffet.

I made sure to walk briskly and purposely to the hotel; though I am an obvious gringo, nobody approached me or gave me any trouble. And for some places a bit further from main avenues, like Whiskeria 65 I took cabs, or some Centro boates / trash I just didn't bother with at all.
As for my venue visits, my days neatly divided into two parts, mostly defined by opening times: privs / CLnicas / massagems from morning through early evening, and termas and their relatives (boates / trash) for nightly social fun.

Solarium is discreetly tucked away on a side street in the leafy Lagoa neighborhood, and I expected its humble faade to cover a more grandiose interior. That was not the case; every aspect of Solarium was smaller and lower key than I expected, from the locker room to the sauna (really a steam room, which made up for its small size with volcanic heat), to the boite, to the bedroom (more on those ahead). I think the lessons learned are:
1. Know where Hospital Aguiar is -- to keep it simple, it is near Central train station (100 m south).

For me Rio beats SP hands down. The vibe is so different. It feels more like being on vacation. There's way more to do in terms of tourist stuff (hiking, beach, etc etc.). Rio girls are way more friendly and less professional than in SP. In Rio girls will make you feel like you're two friends hanging out enjoying each others company. Both cities are worth visiting but for me Rio is the best.
4 x4 is still my favorite terma, I've had so many good sessions there, never had a bad one yet.
I avoided the prives on this trip. If I lived in Rio I'd probably hit them up but on a 1 week trip it didn't seem worth it.
