This was great I really needed this? Just starting to plan vacation, Rio in on the list. DR also. I would love to do Thailand but need more vacation time for that. Already hit Bogota and Panama this year. If you have suggestions on area and restaurants that would be great also. And how is seeking arrangements there. I know usually bumble is crap in most places. But I have had good luck with seeking.Churrascaria palace was pretty good. There are restaurants up and down Copacabana beach road. Most average. Couple decent. Depending on where you stay I'd ask hotel for recommendations. Steakhouses are the place to go. My city tour guide took us to one for lunch in Neiborhood close to Serralon stairs and it was excellent. I did breakfast at JW as it was free for me.
Did not go SA route. Never had luck on that. Depends what you want. If just sex and covered mostly than I'd hit the spas. Best bang buck. I waited until last two days to hit those and was a mistake. Today is exactly one year since my last update of my list of cheap Privs and Centro Casas in Rio. Here is the new update. As always some of the old casas are gone and some new ones have been added to the list. No priv, casa or termas costing more than R$ 95 are on the list.
All of the info and ratings in the list are based on my experiences, in March 2011. Your experience of these casas might be totally different. In these casas the number of girls and the standard can change very quickly. Some casas might also close or move within a short period of time.
This list is meant to be a guide to help you to explore the Centro casas. Its far from complete. I have only listed the casas that I have personally visited. There are many more casas to be explored. This forum is for exchange of information, so I expect you to report about new casas that youll discover.

Ratings:
I have rated using A, B and C. A being over average, B being average and C under average.
Cabin:
A= Clean cabin, big bed, new sheets, A/C and shower possibility.
B= Decent cabin, small bed, A/C or ventilador.
C= Fast-sex-cabin, simple, dirty, smelly and noisy. No showers.
Service:
A= Receives visitors in a very nice and discreet way, girls presenting themselves in pleasant way, girls doing their best in the sex-act.
B= Receives you fairly well. Girls giving a good service.
C= Girls lined up. Girls might be ignorant or having a bad attitude. Take a pick, fuck and leave.
Standard (on the girls):

My personal choices:
# When I want a quick and very cheap session:
Metro to Carioca. First I pass by Rua Carioca 59, then I continue to Rua Uruguaiana 24 and finally to Rua Buenos Aires 85. This casa-tour takes about 20 minutes. Then I make my choice where to session. Usually I end up in BA 85.
# When I want to have a bit more costly quality-sex with GFE in a nice room:
Metro to Carioca. I check out the casas in Av Rio Branco 156, 181 and 185.
Alternatively I head to Tijuca.
# When I want to dig for gems in the trash:
I go to VM. VM is the place where you can hit the jackpot. Some of the most beautiful GPs Ive ever met have been working at VM. The percentage of beautiful girls in VM is very low. Its a sport finding a gem at VM. It takes experience, patience, skill and a portion of good luck.

If I have a bag, then I make sure it's a short walk to get into my taxi or Uber. I will take longer walks, including at night, but then I typically won't have a bag or anything of a lot of value on me. I wear pants and shorts with pockets on them where nothing can be easily lifted. And of course, it helps that I can easily pass for being Brazilian too (until I speak). I have not had anything really bad happen to me in all of my many visits rolling how I do. Knock on wood!

The thing is that botafogo is generally a safe neighborhood. Botafogo is the home of the brazilian west point (urca), several consulates, and a whole list of high soft power cultural institutions.
What could also be contributing is stochastic violence, ie, american election bias against certain candidate profile, a rising wave of global violence into other regions (when 7 Oct. Happened last year, there was a wave in Brazil, including 35 buses that were burned in east rio de janeiro, out near campo grande).

First off, thanks for the info that many of you have provided to me / us.
I was in Rio for a few days at an event. Stayed at the Sheraton, just past Leblon. Hotel was nice, but more family oriented (bar closes at 11 etc.). You could bring someone up, but you were supposed to register them. First night I actually met a very hot local girl at the hotel and we ended up in the room. Very good time.

Here is the Rio portion.
This is the second part of a three part adventure. For this trip I've created what I call the girlfriend sandwich. That is, dine at the girl buffet, then spend a few days locked up with a girlfriend, then dine at the buffet again.

Thank you.The best places to stay for 99% of tourists are either Copacabana or Ipanema. Copa is a lot closer to the night life. Ipanema is more of a younger crowd for the most part and there isn't much to do there at night. I recommend Airbnb for booking. Make sure you read the listing a few times and check everywhere to make sure it doesn't say anything about guests or visitors. I would also recommend booking somewhere with a doorman.

Plenty of real ATMs in Copacabana, and I paid for my airport taxi with a credit card, no need for cash immediately.

But how is the exchange rate?The exchange rate you get depends on which bank card (the bank that decides the exchange rate) you use. All ATMs including Bradesco ones offer their own exchange which is ripoff at 12-20% markup. One should always decline ATM (or credit card machines) offered exchange rate in Brazil or anywhere in the work. They never offer good rates.
I use Schwab card, and I get exchange rage 1 or 2 centavos less than the recent closing exchange rate (if the previous close is 5. 90, I get 5. 88). They used to give based on real-time rate but recently they switched to previous day closing rate.

I hate this time of year, but there are 3 major hurdles to pass until we get back to the chill Rio that Vagabundo prefers.
