Their is a popular brand of hotel in south america named Ibis, there is like 2-3 in rio and I seen some in other south american country. Sidenote: I do recommend evening picknicks in Copacabana beach. However go before midnight while there are plenty of people around. I decided it was time to try out Perola Negra. I walked from Olegario Maciel, which was packed full of people, to PN. I hate to sound like a broken drum, but the way to go is to actually fuck at a prive for 180 r, IE, get your CPF cost per fuck there in a prive, and get numbers at Perola Negra and mix in the PN girls with the centro prive girls.

I decided it was time to try out Perola Negra. I walked from Olegario Maciel, which was packed full of people, to PN. I wouldn't have guessed that but her phone background was her young daughter. Anyway, I say let's get out of here and go to Asha. These Germans were idiots on several points.
First, Copa is in the middle of 3 favelas (to quote a local, ann amari, who is smart, and who lives in a favela) as to why it is not safe.
Second, if a visitor to Rio wants part of the outdoor / dining experience, there are active whatsapp groups for hiking, which is one of the best things to do in Rio, and which attract lots of gringas, with whom Vagabundo has had some of his best days. Prainha / Mirante do caete is particularly good, and easy.
But that is playing the long game.
So many stupid tourists in Rio. Two German tourists went for a night-time swim in Copacabana. Some thieves robbed their clothes and belongings. The thieves were caught by police.

Sidenote: I do recommend evening picknicks in Copacabana beach. However go before midnight while there are plenty of people around. As I always stay one block from the beach me and a GF prepare some nice food and snacks, a cooler with wine, cold beer, music / loudspeakers, chairs and make some gin tonics. It's wonderful with the night breeze from the ocean. As always you just have to stay alert.

It's my first time in Rio, first time in Brazil. I'm a Medellin vet tho. Like, a trip every 6-8 weeks for the last 3 years straight. Okay, so after catching like 4 flights and over 24 hours in transit I finally got here early Friday morning. Wasn't able to sleep on the plane so I went zombie mode and slept like all day, finally getting out a little after 8 pm or so, grabbing a bite to eat at the "Coisas de Bamba" on the beachfront. You pay afterward when you are leaving. If you want drinks, they scan the card the doorman gave you, and at the end of the night before you leave, you turn in your card and pay the balance you have put on it from your purchases. So, the club is whatever. It has potential for sure. But at this very moment its lame. It's packed as fuck, but no one is dancing. It's fucking weird. So I get drinks. We fuckin dance. I'm not going to feel fucking special being up there with 3 dudes and her in "VIP". Ho please. So then I'm like wtf did you take so long for? What were yeall talking about for so long then? And she's like. They were using Google translate to go back and forth between Spanish and Portuguese to have their conversation. Oh Gawd. Setting: So now, we're outside talking about this, sitting at the food arts and shit by the arches. So we order a Caipirinha and some street food, that spiral pasta stuff topped with like ground beef spaghetti style with fries and shit. We eat that and I order a Uber at like 5:30 am after the sunset and banging her out I xoom her like 50 bucks afterwards, cause well, it's always been like that, ever since MDE days for years I've known her now. But what if a guest unregisters his Friday's girl and the next morning tries to register a different girl for Saturday or Sunday? At the very minimum, even a luke warm guest friendly hotel would go along with this register / unregister BS which would still deter me from staying at this hotel because of the inconvenience and the hotel's hostile and negative attitude towards me as a customer. I stayed in Rio for six nights a couple of weeks ago. It was more of a vacation than a mongercation, so readers might come away a little disappointed.
Flight: I flew Latam downdon't really recommend. It was a 767 with narrow pitch--when the person in front leaned the seat back, I had about 4" of space in front of my nose. Fine otherwise.
Hotel: Stayed at the Pestana. Some people we know found it pricey at about $200 a night. Still, it's across the street from the beach, fairly close to the subway, very clean and comfortable. It's cheaper to book directly with the hotelI paid the Expedia tax. They are aggressive about guests: I brought a civilian in, and security pulled us out of the elevator. The front desk gave me the choice of adding her to my reservation (which I should have done) or fill our some form and pay a fee. It's probably easier to get girls in during daylight hours.
Food: The concierge recommended a place called Braseiro, which is basically behind the Pestana. The style of the restaurant is casual like a diner. Everybody knows picanha, but the concierge recommended another one, starts with M, which is a bit cheaper and also delicious. With it you get a delicious tomato and onion salad, and three carbs: farofa, fries (so-so) and rice (good.) (Other guests got beans too.) I also visited the touristy Confeitaria Colombo in Centro. It had a good buzz and the egg tarts were small but not as sweet as the ones from Macau.
My favorite juice bar is Big Bi at Siqueira Campos / Nossa Senhora de Copacabana.
Cocktails: I took many daily walks to the Hilton, which has a bar by the pool on the 4th floor. (The fancier bar is only accessible to guests.) I got them to make me a macanuaima (which they didn't know)it's cachaca, Fernet, lime juice and simple syrup. It's now one of my favorites.

Dating: My civilian Tinder data must have lived in a favela. I took her to an Italian restaurant, whose cuisine she had never had (Mexican as well.) The dear wanted to go up to my hotel room with me, but I was freaked out at the prospect of adding someone to my reservation (duh--should have done it because she was a sweetheart and good to go.) She has a sick kid, and daily money requests started after I got back, but I was able to offend her, and they stopped.
Safety: Never had any issues. Uber is super cheap. My ride from GIG to Copa was like USD $12. Don't take the subway at rush hour, because it's packed like sardines.
Verdict: I'm going back as soon as I can.

Thank you. The prices went up dramatically, it's a fact. IBIS is part of Accor and always been guest friendly. However, I'm not aware of any updated list of GF hotels in Rio which also won't charge a joiner fee on double occupancy.I do not know who needs to hear this, but my boy is at the Hilton and guest fee is 575 reais.

I only had a couple issues: 1) They are extremely particular about the photo that you submit (so take a little time to get right), and 2) it took them 1 month to process (just implemented, new process), and I needed to follow up a couple times. I understand from friends that it is down to 3-5 days now.

Buy a leash for your fancy iPhone, back it up, or carry burner and get a leash anyway, make a color copy of passport, carry that instead of original passport, the security offices in the buildings with the prives on rio branco will accept the color copy no problem, if you are strolling copa or centro late at night looking for strange. They won't get your original passport. I did the e-Visa a little over a year ago. It was 10 years and $80. # 1 - see above. Stay calm and make it easy for them. It's just money and maybe your phone. Not worth any risk. Remember, most of these guys have nothing to lose and are used to being violent.

Gangs are known to smash car windows to steal phones in certain areas (unlikely in Zona Sul). Absolutely avoid buses and especially minibuses.
# 4 - leave all expensive bling at home. Don't even bother bringing fancy watches, gold necklaces or even expensive sunglasses to Brazil unless you don't mind them getting stolen. You'll just raise attention. Better blend in. Havaianas or sneakers, shorts, T-shirt or football Jersey. Sure, and wear your running shoes on the beach if you believe in the off chance that local garotas will mistake you for a fireman instead of a tourist.
# 5 - I use an old phone with a local SIM card (easy with CPF, but also possible at local phone provider offices but just bring passport) and only have Whatsapp, Google Maps and Uber installed. Most importantly no banking apps. Also, as general precaution, secure your main phone against fraud after theft (many online resources about this, absolutely advised anywhere, the issue is not your phone getting stolen, it's hackers getting into your bank accounts in no time unless well protected). It's actually quite liberating to not stare at your phone all day. No strap needed either if you only use it sparingly.
# 6 - I use a hidden pouch (worn under the belt) to carry passport, important cards and larger sums of cash. I only have a small wallet in my pocket with at least 50 R $ in cash (so thieve are happy and leave) and an expired or blocked credit card. So happy to hand over wallet and phone in case of robbery.

# 7 - Don't take girls back to your place unless the porteiro or reception register them. Boa noite cinderela is a thing. If you can't or don't want to register, take a picture of her ID and send it to your email. Or even better, take her to one of the many love hotels. Huge fun and worth the extra dime.
# 8 - Rio Centro is off limits on weekends and at night, unless you Uber it straight to the location of your choice. Make sure there is nobody lurking when you step out and ensure you have the right address and know where the entrance is. Be very cautious when in Lapa. Can be good fun but a lot more dangerous than Zona Sul. I only go partying there when I'm with at least one other guy. Copacabana is also shady, especially at night. Most first time tourists stay there and are easy targets. I spend 80+% of my time in Ipanema, Leblon or Barra.
# 9 - In any shady place, get bottles of beer and make sure to see how they are opened. Take your bottle with you when taking a leak.
# 10 - Trust your gut. If something feels strange, don't take the risk. Rio is not as dangerous as you may think but don't be lured into thinking it is safe either. Don't test your luck.
Some of this might feel like unnecessary precaution, but it's easy to implement and I have never been robbed in those 20+ years of travel in Brazil and elsewhere in South America (knock on wood).
Rio is an absolutely stunning city, so most importantly, have a blast!
First I would like to thank all of you that posted on previous trips, it helped tremendously. Most of the info has already been reported this is just my two cents.
Pre trip- Paid the $80 for the E-Visa online. The site said it would take up to three weeks for the approval but I got it the email in four days. Remember to print and bring to the airport. Delta gate agents said they would not let you board without it. I flew Delta direct for ATL to GIG departing at 11 PM arriving the next day at 10 AM.
Arrival- Very easy going through customs. The guy didn't ack me anything, just checked my paperwork and that was it. Uber cannot pickup up at the front of the airport. When you exit the terminal just turn left and continue waking all the way till the end of the terminal and you will see the Uber pickup points labeled purple, green and orange. Select your location and wait for your ride. Only had to wait 10 minutes. Ride from the airport to Copacabana is about 30 minutes.
Hotel- I stayed at the Hilton on Copacabana. I can't tell you if it's guess friendly or not I didn't ask. I also didn't see anyone doing the walk of shame.
Clubs- First was Cuatro por Cuatro. I arrived about 9 PM walked in and went to the bar downstairs. I wasn't completely sure how the process worked but one of the waiters motioned me over and gave me a card with a number so all you have to do is present the card and everything is tracked via the card. I was then shown upstairs where all the ladies were about 15 or so. Most were walking around in bikinis or little to nothing. Only a few guys were wearing robes, I guess they were locals. The obvious gringos just had on our street clothes. I stayed for about two hours talked to a few chicas but never took anyone to the rooms. When you leave they will direct you through the maze that will lead you to the exit. Here you will give the reception your card and she will tell you how much you owe. Prior to exiting the guy at the door will check receipt. I can't remember how much I paid but it was around $150 R for 3 X Heinekens and coke for one of the girls.
Second Club was Monte Carlo. I arrive around 7 PM. I walked to the front desk and before I could say anything she said its your first time? We had a quick laugh and she gave me my locker key with number tag and explained the process. I'm not really into the robe thing but it is what is. So I striped down and put the robe and flip-flops on and went up to the third floor (don't forget your phone you may need it to translate). When I walked in there were maybe 10 ladies waiting, me and two guys behind the bar. You can google search the name a see pictures inside the bar area. I walked over to the bar and they all stood up to present themselves. I told them to relax I'm just going to have a drink first. It's kind of hard to relax when you have everyone sitting looking at you waiting for you to make a selection. After about ten minutes another guy show up and I noticed he just put his rob over his street clothes. I didn't know that was an option. Anyway he goes to the bar and buys all the ladies a drink. I guess if you got it you got it, I'm not one to pocket watch. Anyway he sits down on the couch and starts chatting with his choice for the night. A few ladies come up to me and we make small talk and I tell each that I'm still looking. After an hour I make my selection and we head upstairs for a one hour session (you can choose 40 minutes or 1 HR session). When I get upstater they try to offer me a suite but I declined and we take more stair to the room. In the room she provided excellent service message, BBBJ, no rush. After we said our goodbyes and I went back to the locker room to shower. They have everything you need soap, toothbrush, mouthwash. After you change you go down stairs to turn in your key at the reception and she will tell you how much you owe. If you use a Credit Card there is an extra fee. She will then give you your receipt that you need to present to the door man before leaving. My total was about $950 R that included 2 X Heinekens one drink for her and the room.
MABS, I stopped by after leaving both cuatro por cuatro and MC each night just to see what it was like. The first night time I arrived around 1130. They had the football game on and the second night they had the UFC fight on and they stayed open extra late 3 AM to watch Brazil win. I didn't pick anyone up but there are a few very nice looking ladies that walk past. Guys just sit and watch the TV and girls stand around all the entrances walking around and around like sharks around fish. All waiting for someone to call them over to their table for drinks and negotiate the night.
Safety- I never felt uncomfortable walking around day or night. The main strip is very well lit at night and you can see everything with people that are just out waking their dogs. I walked from Monte Carlo to MABS and never felt threatened. I have read about people taking precautions with cell phones. I saw more people using their cell phones just like any place else in the world of course I would never walk down an unlit street at night try to take a selfie. I used the ATM just two blocks from the main strip. There is a charge but how much depends on you bank.
Language- I read that Brazilians don't speak Spanish or english which is true. Most Ubers I got the driver said they only spoke Portuguese. Each of the bars I went to I was able to hold somewhat of a conversation in my broken Spanish and somewhat understand each other. I rarely had to use google translate but all the venders that are on the beach walk have no problem trying to speak english when trying to sell you something.
Tourism- I hit all the major sites in Rio in my few days here. Recommend taking the Rio Somba hop on / off tour bus. It will take you to all the sites and you can decide later when and if you want to see the attractions. The tour lasted about two hours. Try to hit all the tourist sites early in the morning to avoid the crowds.
Beaches- If I had to choose Ipanema beach is better than Copacabana beach. Copacabana beach is less crowded because it has more area between the water and the shore walk with more of the tourist gringos and it is not the best for swimming but neither is Ipanema. Also people don't pick up their trash after. Ipanema seems more like a beach for locals but gets very crowded but the view of the ladies was much nicer in my opinion. It has more upscale beach bars. I'm not sure if this happens every Sunday but they closed one road off and everyone was out walking, running, biking from one beach to the other. So far as beach attire you can get away with flip-flops and shorts, hat and sunglasses. Recommend a small backpack to keep a bottle water, shirt, towel and walking running shoes. Each beach has spots to rinse off.
Pros / Cons for the ladies- I like the natural look with all different shades and sizes. Nice bodies although there are a few with enhancements (not a fan). Cons, I'm not into a lot of tattoos. I've noticed that seems to be the trend all over. Note the Termas open in the afternoon and close around midnight so get there early than later. I'm used to the action not to happen until after 11PM.
Over all it was a good first trip for me. Next trip will be longer and I will hit more areas.

Stay. Ibis Copacabana post 5.
Stayed here for 4 days and hotel is modern and on par with 3 star hotels in USA. No daily room service and that is kind of surprising to me. They have a great breakfast buffet. This is a big hotel with busy traffic and had no issues girls visiting me at my room. I had 3 visits and no one at front desk bothered to ask them. Price in April was around $50 a day.
I restaurant and bar hopped around the area and felt safe. I did not see much issues with safety around the hotel. Uber pickups and drop offs were quick with out much wait times.
Block from the Ibis hotel there is an eatery named Predilto. They have amazing lunch specials for $5.
Monte Carlo. Visited two nights in a row and average price for girl, room, and couple of drinks came around BR 800. There were around 10 girls during my early night visit and I was able lucky to find girls that spoke / understand little English and hold conversation. GEF experienced in the room. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Rio.
Solarium. Prices are similar to Monte Carlo and little better selection of girls IMO. Visited 3 nights and had sessions with 2 girls both named Luana. Classic GEF sessions for under BR 800.
I also visited couple of provides from photoacompanhantes in Rio Centro area during day time. It required showing an ID at the front desk to access elevator. All my pockets have zipper and one double layer that I kept important stuff. That attempt failed too. On several other occasions, the locals yelled at me to secure my phone.
It is a very well known problem. To overcome it, I am now more careful. If there is a stairs nearby, I would climb up to the top to use my phone. The area around Casarao is the most problematic area that this can happen. If you are calling a Uber, it is better to wait inside until the Uber arrives and not check your phone on the sidewalk. The robbery have been known to happen outside Bomboa in the past because there is less traffic.
I would suggest a neck strap if you want some insurance. You can hide it under the shirt or jacket. When you take it out to take pictures, it will be difficult to snatch it. For phone I bought a refurbished Google Pixel 7 a /8 a off of eBay with dual SIM. It's exceptionally easy to swap out SIMs / eSIMs when travelling and I keep the iPhone at home. It also makes it easier to keep monger life (and girls) separate from real life. For ID, I use an old state ID / passport card / or government ID. For credit card I use a Chase Visa and set a low limit, like $1500 (I've found Chase to have best fraud and identity protection, plus Visa accepted everywhere). I never carry a debit card, except when I am explicitly planning to get $$. Oftentimes I don't carry any cards, and just cash. If I may need more $$, I hide some in my sock or shoe (old school, but it works).
Some may call this overkill, but I am usually running solo and I have been mugged a couple times despite being a larger and younger guy.

Learning Portuguese is worth every effort and something I've been recommending everyone who goes there regularly or for a prolonged period of time.
You get so much more out of the experience in every part of your day. And of course it's a game changer with the garotas.
Dominating the language adds massively to the gringo bonus, once you also figure out the caveman way of pickup, you are almost unbeatable in a club as long as you are confident and not hideous. In my 30's, pulling the hottest chicks out of upscale clubs like the glorious Barronetti and Nuth was as easy as as ordering a chopp. Ah, those days.
And of course it very much adds to safety. Being at ease with the language and knowing the place that's you walk around with a different type of confidence (a dagger may add to that but I'd rather not have anything on me that I'm willing to fight for).
And to Rio Bobs quote, I'm actually Austrian and do mostly get taken for a Brazilian by the locals.

The team down in Porto Allegre is internacional, you can look it up. You can be the whitest white, but the locals will appreciate the effort, the joke, if you wear the shirt of a local team, not the national shirt, but go down to metro uruguiana, and walk down in the stalls in saara, the shopping market, and pick out a local Brazilian team.
In SP, I am palmeiras. A few years back ISGer Michael Samuel and I went to a vasco game (we couldn't get in but had a great time at a local shop watching it outside with the locals near a UPP station). They had this great shirt half vasco and half palmeiras, which if memory serves is the Italian team, and being Italian by nurture, the clan being from Lake Como in the Dolomites, I still have it somewhere in my new beach apartment kept with pride, even though the Irish pennants are decorating it.
Well, I see Lula and Trump are sniffing around like dogs who have marked their territory by pissing in circles, so I hope that the world is safe for banging the 20 year old Melanias of the world while they are still freshly out of their teens. 4 x4: Not as classy, but lively and fun. Lots of girls and the cheapest of all Tier 1 termas.

You will sacrifice the physical beauty of RJ, but I do not think you will regret it thanks to the quality and quantity of SP Boate girls.
But if RJ remains your choice destination, and there is nothing wrong with this decision, then understand that the RJ termas are a step down in scale and quality from SP Boates. And with that said, I rate Solarium ahead of Centaurus and Monte Carlo because I like their girls better. Standard Solarium rooms are very small with tiny beds, however. Yet everything is clean, and you will have a good time, but here is a tip, you might want a room upgrade. You should also check out 4 x 4, not for its "upscale setting" LOL, but for its party party atmosphere and also Perola Negra.
I tend to find myself leaning more towards Rio de Janeiro in recent times. The ambience and vibe of the city is second to none, Sao Paulo is way behind in that respect. 1. Make it 4 full days at least.
2. Forget Leblon. It's far away in Rio traffic.
2. Check the weather for tourist stuff (Sugarloaf and Corcovado). Clouds matter.
3. Forget the Hop On bus. You simply won't have time. Take tours to the attractions (yes, that'll cost you more, but they'll pick you up and drop you off and have your tickets).

I think I can understand Senor Vagabondo's safety concerns, if not outright obsession. It is a violent city and if you live there 365, the odds are you will become a victim of crime at one point in your life. Can't beat the math. But the rest of us are short-term visitors.
