I was here last Sept. Entered into Rio thru Terminal 1 at GIG, with it's associated hassles. Returned to Rio yesterday, (Sunday.) This time entered thru Terminal 2. Difference: Brazilian's and tourists are shepherd into separate rooms. Passing thru immigration was quick with 6 immigration officers. By the time I got to luggage claim, my bags were on the conveyor belt, (pleasant surprise.) However, baggage claim was very crowded. All good, until I went thru customs, which was the choke point. They have more X-Ray machines: every bag entering Brasil was getting checked. Very long, slow moving line of people with nothing to declare. Line stretched into baggage claim. The items to declare line was empty, of course. Total time to get thru immigration and customs: 1 hour. I think only one other flight came in at the same time as mine. Going to customs will only get worse with more flights arriving at the same time.
I needed to buy some credits for my phone and had to get to the second floor. Another bottleneck: only 2 working elevators, and another long, slow moving line. Welcome to Brasil.
ATM's: Learned today, Banco do Brasil now has a daily cash withdrawal limit of $R500. WTF! I was able to get $R1000 / day last Sept. Was told HSBC has a daily limit of $R300? (Filho the PUTA!) I'll confirm that later.

Went to Barbarella 2 nights ago. R70 entrance. 2 drinks. Pressure for tip by taxi guy, but easily shaken off. Good shows but not a many girls worth taking. I left and went to Dolce Vita around 2. R30 entrance. Not really into anything there either, so I left around 4. Drink prices there are reasonable and I like the card system for payment. If it were about 4 times as large, it would be great. As it is, it's just claustrophobic.
Balcony made me feel sad and dirty. Nothing there I would touch for free.
Went back to Barbs Sunday at 1am. Looked inside and there were maybe 3 girls. 10 guys. Doorman just shrugged. Taxi guy wasn't happy he didn't get his door money. Oh well.
Went to Dolce Vita and the outside was dead. I sat at Balcony and had a drink. About 2am a girl who didn't look like she belonged there (3x as hot as any girl at Balcony) arrived. I talked to her, and she started at R500. She said she used to work at Barbs but no longer does. She gave me weird vibes so I didn't pursue it.
I went to go to Dolce Vita and the doorman said R50. Given the fact that it appeared dead, I have no clue why the price went up. I felt like he was taking advantage of me so I said no thanks.
An interesting phenomenon at Balcony / Dolce Vita for those who haven't been: there's a separated area a the bottom of the stairs where people can come down to smoke. At any given time last night, there were 5 to 10 girls just standing there, with a come hither look to them to lure in guys. It appears that DV has some arrangement wherein they take shifts coming down and acting as bait.
Overall, I'm disappointed with the Rio scene. Definitely not what it used to be.

Also, I had no problem getting R1000 from a Citi ATM today.

Not all Banco do Brasil ATM's works with foreign cards. The machines that works have an adhesive with symbols of VISA and something else.

I assume they changed these limits starting with the new year, as I wasn't in Rio during Jan / Feb 2013. I'm not sure why they did this but it's annoying as hell!

I can confirm that the ATM limits have definitely changed. In December 2012, Banco do Brasil allowed me to withdraw R$800 a day. Now they only allow R$500 a day. My bank allows $510 USD a day. I also tried HSBC and the max allowed was R$300, like what one other poster here experienced.
I assume they changed these limits starting with the new year, as I wasn't in Rio during Jan / Feb 2013. I'm not sure why they did this but it's annoying as hell!I confirmed with a V. P. At HSBC that HSBC Bank Brasil imposed a daily limit of R$ 300 for all non-HSBC ATM withdrawals effective at the beginning of Carnaval. He had no explanation for this lower limit or when it might be raised. This limit does not apply if you have an HSBC Premier account.

An expat here told me HSBC now has a $R300 daily limit for foreign ATM cards. It looks like Citibank may be the only one to still give $R1000 / day to foreign ATM cards.

I took the metro to 4x4 today. I had been there before in taxi and the metro is the way to go. R7 roundtrip and much faster. I followed the directions in Bubba Boys guide and it worked fine. Maybe a 5 to 10 min walk from the Uruguiana metro station. I even walked back at around 9:30 pm and felt completely safe.
R50 entrance waived if you take a girl before 6 (I confirmed it was 6 and not 5.)
240 40 mins.

Docile around 3, then got full quick. The guide is correct that most all of the girls that will be there arrive by 5.

As for tips, the ask gringos for tips. Like restaurants, the tip is included in the bill. I always give the locker room lady a tip in all the termas but not the girls. They don't ask Brazilians that.
I have been asked for tips by the girls in order to give to the cleaning women. It was so the cleaning woman would wait 15-20 minutes before she called the desk to let them know you had entered the room with the girl. For 5R, you could get 20 extra minutes of fucking! I thought it was a great deal! (When we would stand in line upstairs where the girls get their hair done, it is the cleaning women who called downstairs to let them know what room you went into.)
The people I do not tip in 4x4:
The girl who rings up your selection : The black girl who you present your key to when you go upstairs with the girl you choose, she asks for tips now too. My last 2 times in 4x4, she asked me for a 5-10R tip when she was entering in my info. I don't think I got anything out of it, no extra time, nada.
The guy who collects the exit card. For a while he was very aggresive in asking for tips when you handed him your exit card. Once he even stood in front of me and blocked my way! I was pissed as hell and damn near had to shove him out of my way so I could leave!
The girls who ring up the bill : I don't know why some stupid ass Americans started tipping them but now they expect that all Americans will give them tips. In fact, if you don't give them tips, they will help themselves. On a number of occasions, they have robbed me of 1-2 reais in change that I was supposed to get back from them. When you call them out on it, they get all pissy like you did something wrong!
Security Guards : I never found out why, but I was very surprised to seee that 4x4 has security guards now. I don't know what sparked that. A couple of times, after Ihave paid my bill and am exiting the lobby to go downstairs, I have been asked by the security guards for a tip. I just ignore them and keep it moving.

That, + the entrance + 3 Skols = $R340. Only 3 GPD's did anything for me, (all my trips have jaded me.) I may return for another session with one of the three that I liked. No one asked for any tips as I was leaving. Walked back to the Metro station around 10:30p. Lot of people out and about on the main streets at that time. The Metro was not very busy.

Both on Rua Bento Lisboa 184.Call to Ju went straight to VM. Made an appointment to meet Stefany at Cacau. Was given the above address, a 10 min ride from Copa via the Metro. It's located in a nondescript apartment building across the Praca, as you exit the Metro on the Largo do Machado side. Was not sure I was in the right place when I entered the building, was even less sure when I rang the apartment's doorbell. Was reassured when a thin mulatta in a bikini answered the door. Even though I made an appointment, was told Stefany was not working, (but, of course.) Was shown the "apresentação" of 6 GPD's. Chose Karol, an attractive morena, maybe mid 20's. Took the hour for $R120. Got a nice massage, she was a par 3 course, no mention of up charge to access the back door. Only negative was the CBJ, but I had a much better time than the previous night at 4X4. House was clean, with AC. The room was small, comparable to the hour rooms at 4x4, but without the shower. Bed sheet was clean, and the room had a ceiling fan. Even though I stayed a little over an hour, there was no knock at the door. Cacau's website shows 6 GPD's, which were not the one's I saw. Cacau's site does not list prices. GPGuia list an hour at $R150 + $R40 for the back door. I was charged $R120, so, YMMV.
Karol stated there were other prives in the building, but did not know of Ju Panteras. I was wondering if the building had short term apartments to rent.
Just arrived back to U. S to finish my global electives. However, I end up banging tonight a 19 yrs old 5 9' super hot Dominican chik. I know her cousin so things works out excellent. You also have to pay R$67.
If you overstay without had your visa extended you can be fined when you leave. I overstayed a couple of times and acted like a dumb gringo and never got fined. However if you get fined, the fine is only R$8,7/day. Actually when I spoke with Polícia Federal today the guy recommended me not to extend my visa.
Museum the Imagem e do Som is constructed where former Help was located. On the construction site they have a visitors lounge with cute girls that gives a lot of information about the museum. The reason it looks the work has stopped is because the museum will have three floors underground and they are working on these floors. In all there will be six floors.
There will be a museum, exhibitions, café, restaurants, shops, theater, cinema, terrace and even a boate (no, not a new Help).
It's supposed to be finished in the beginning of 2014 (but most likely it will be delayed).

A couple of years ago, I just responded by asking them if I am going to get a discount. Which they usually say "no". The I respond "no discount, no tip". Ultimately, I just let them know that if you don't help me, I can't help you. They hate that response. So I always give them the same response. Wake up call for anyone thinking about tips for these characters. 9 out of 10 times they only ask non-brazilians. Figure it out! My 2 cents.

Hello everyone! I have just finished reading the last 50 pages of comments / reports and I just want to thank all the people who have posted their reports and guides. I am a newbie to this whole mongering world. I've only been to Rio for 2 days before and that was when I visited someone in Sao Paulo. Didn't even know what a terma was. Completely unacceptable. Anyways, I will be travelling with two friends who are not mongers but I plan to introduce them to that side of Rio. I've seen some posts asking about flights and housing options so I'll contribute what I did so that maybe other newbies can get an idea of how to plan their Rio trip.
Not endorsing any of these places, just posting what I did. I went on kayak. Com and looked up flights from the USA to Brazil. Found one on US Airways for USD$956 (FYI it is now $763 and those punks won't refund me the difference). For housing, I used airbnb. Com which has a lot of filters so that you can narrow down exactly the type of place you are looking for. There are reviews so you can verify that a place isn't infected with cockroaches or rundown (read about that here. Not cool). Be careful though, this one apartment in Ipanema had a rule saying no sex tourism. Found a good three bedroom apartment with modern updates for about $1500 for 7 nights. Splitting that with my 3 friends for 7 nights comes to about $72 a night with flexible check in and check out. I bought a travel book which has alot of good stuff on touristy things (Rio for Partiers) but it has ZERO stuff on picking up chicas. Absolutely unacceptable. So I read Bubba's report with Sperto's report included and started reading this thread back from October 2012 when Sperroid wrote his reports.
I'll be in Rio from April 3 to April 10 and hopefully can post some useful reports. I won't be mongering every single day but hopefully can hit 3 or more spots during my stay. I have also found some websites for escorts that I haven't seen mentioned here before:

I've read some pessimist posts guessing that the city of Rio will close down privês in centro as a part of the cleaning up before the World Cup.
I see no tendency of this so far. Today I had the pleasure of visiting more than 50 privês/casas de massagem, in the category R$20-100, in Centro (and sampled some gems). There is no lack of wh*re-houses in Rio. Just as good as always, even though the prices have gone up a bit.

thanks in large part to this awesome forum and rio generally being a great city to visit, i'm having a blast on my first time in rio, though so far not literally as you'll see below. i stopped by monte carlo in copacabana to check things out. i'm not sure whether it's carnaval or something else, but the number of guys were even with and at times exceeding the number of garotas.

When I was there with a colegue, no lines, no hassle at all.
Vila Mimosa looks just the way it has been looking for a long time. Same number of casas, loud music and also the same smell. Some bars invested in some paint. VM continues to have it's "charm". Nobody there believes VM will have to close because of the Trem Bala.

I have never had any dealings with Africa so immediately we came to the conclusion that it was fraud. I have been to Rio de Janeiro a handful of times and never had any problems. I primarily stick to the downtown area visiting the first tier termas and top massage places. In the future, if I should return, I will only go to the ATMs that I use on Branco street and pay for services in their currency thus minimizing the exposure of my credit cards.

It will state the entry requirements, stay limitations, etc. Should have wording such as "FIRST ENTRY WITHIN 90 DAYS, VALID FOR MULTIPLE ENTRIES, etc," If in doubt contact the Consulate where you obtained the visa.

The accident might have been caused because of a dispute between a passenger and the driver.

The Cantagalo Station is also semi closed since the trains from that station go from Cantagalo to Siquiera Campos and back to Cantagalo only. I found this out the hard way while taking the metro and having an appointment. Hence, if you want to go to Centro and you take the metro from Cantagalo, you must transfer at Siquiera Campos if you left from Cantagalo to continue your journey to Centro. Talk about efficiency, geez! So basically, the trains leaving from Siquiera Campos are the only ones going to Centro and beyond.

In my opinion overall the Marriott, Sofitel and certainly the Fasano are better. However, it depends on the room you reserve at the Palace. One thing for sure, if you plan on using any of the toiletries, hide them. the only vans i use in rio are the ones going on av atlântica; leme-copacabana-ipanema-leblon. i find those excellent. however i often get very irritated on the vans in rio. they stop at the bus stops to long looking for passengers, blocking the access of the buses that are using the bus stop.

However he hasn't addressed the unemployment problem of the displaced van drivers and fare takers. I hope they don't try collecting fares from passengers in the backs of busses.

Nice clean pleasant establishment, maybe about 20 lovelies (all youngish and decent-looking) , introduced parlour / privé style in a pleasant lounge with video music playing.
That should get your day started. Your question about hotels is too broad (Sao Paulo is the biggest city in the Southern Hemisphere). Decide which area you want to stay in. If you don't know the city, there maybe are people here who might show you around. Or get a metro to Republica. There's a tourist information just outside the station with maps and things. I haven't seen any vans in Copacabana today and there seems to be an increase in busses, I. E. No apparent overcrowding. The estimated 500 vans serving Zona Sul have apparently relocated to the other zones. The below cited figure of 100 million passengers is a bit high for a city the size of Rio (6 million gens.) I think it is a daily van ridership of about 100 thousand. I also heard they are looking at other (less radical) options to legalize the van operations.

I would like to share my first experience with Rio's famous Balcony girls.

I never got cheated, change was always correctly given back. Since Monday I have first to walk down Av. Atlantica for some 100 yards to avoid the Mafia cab drivers in Front of Balcony and than get a taxis and take care, that the meter and the correct tarif is on. Usually I pay 8 reais. But a gringo can afford it. Worse off are commuters, who have to change the Bus or change from Metro to Bus to reach their job. They have to buy 2 tickets each way and fight their way into crowded buses during rush hour. And the whole mess for Rio's image during FIFA 2014 and the Olympics in 2016.

I would like to share my first experience with Rio's famous Balcony girls.

I know this is Rio Thread, but as long as I live in Barcelona, I couldn't help but answering this. Never seen nor heard of anything similar to Rio vans in Barcelona or any other european city for the matter, but be very sure that you can get taxis in Barcelona (black and yellow, the ONLY taxis you will see around) anywhere in the city, as long as they are free at the moment (little green light on top). Designated stands, of course, exist, but 8 out of 10 times you will hail any free taxi in the street and you will jump in.
On the other hand, I agree with you about banning the vans. Good decision.

SF.Not trying to be disagreeable but I have been to Barcelona many times and never saw taxis picking anyone up in the street. After several passed me giving me dirty looks when I tried to flag them down, I gave up and walked to designated areas. When I asked the locals (in Spanish) about catching taxis in the street they told me to go to the designated areas.
When Rio got the Olympics I suggested to the powers that be that they visit Barcelona. In my opinion, Barcelona manages tourism better than any other city in the world.

Had a first-time visit to the Red Light Club tonight guided by PatmarBeleza, who has been burning up the board with his detailed, useful posts of late. Great stuff!
I'd heard of this place and that it was somewhere in Praca the Bandeira but never really worked up the effort to go. Tonight we tried to catch a bus out there, but the 455 blew past us in Copa, and, well, time is money. So we hopped in a cab. It's about R$25 to get there and the same coming back. I know this because my favorite Brazilian restaurant, Aconchego Carioca, is there on Barao de Iguatemi. And 1 block down the street, a friend is opening a specialty beer bar. Which happens to be across the street from the Hotel Malaga, which is a decent sex motel with reasonable rates. And. Get this. The whole thing is 1. 5 blocks away from Red Light Club. How could I not know that for 2+ years?
Anyway, RLC is set up in a narrow building with 4+ floors. The first floor has the Caixa and a long bar with square tables, no music. Nobody was there when we arrived around 8. 30pm. When I left at 11. 30pm, there were 3-4 dudes drinking down there and a sweaty drunken hooker falling over her co-workers. Drama!
The second floor has a smaller bar area, same square tables, and the end of the room set up as a stage with some poles and space for pagode / live music. It also had blaring funk before the pagode started, with the same type of dude yelling into a microphone. Just like at 502. It's a reasonable place to watch the chicks dance, but loud to hang out and talk.
Upstairs there are toilets and then the whole back of the 3rd floor has been transformed into an open-air smoking area with a smaller bar. No music. Great place to hang out with a chick to have a chat. Because it's open air, the smoke isn't as overpowering as in other smoking areas like 4x4's or 502's. I ended up buying my chosen beauty a whiskey (R$22, big spender!) and sitting with her there for a while during which she lectured me in the problems with Brasilian politics. Hi-larious! My favorite part was when she made fun of Dilma for saying people should call her "Presidenta". My chick was all,"Presidente e Presidente. Nao tem feminino." Told me she voted for Jose Serra in the last election. She's 22. Good on 'er!
Anyway, the rooms are on the 4th floor and I think they may also have there on the 5th floor the dressing rooms / area for the chicks. The rooms are small and come with a small bed (raised off the floor) and a shower / toilet area. The rooms themselves and the shower / toilet were not 100% disgusting. I'd say at or above 502 quality, which is actually OK. But the pillows left something to be desired. One had no pillowcase and looked heinous. I'm like, jeez, spend R$20 and buy a new pillow. Anyhoo.
Solid performance by my girl, who says she doesn't speak to a lot of gringos. The place is kind of a hangout for Brazilian posters on a Brazil gdp forum, so I understand that. Advance planning:

That's funny. I've heard a lot about Aconchega Carioca but I never went there.
I've been so close countless of times, when leaving VM. Usually when I leave VM I take a quick refresco at the chinese place close to the bus stop before I catch a bus, never realizing that Aconchega Carioca was just around two corners.
P.S Just as dear Patmar said, don't go there. That area is filled of violent armed pitbull guys who really hates gringos. The Tijuca area is even worse, avoid it.
Reading through Patmar'ts posts and the PM's he so kiendly sent to some of us, I understand that he's the monger of the year.The pleasures he experienced on his trip must have been 100 times more than the average guy experienced in a lifetime.
This year I did my share of GP's, not a modest number. However, as I stayed for almost 4 months, buying a GP became almost became the same as buying a hot-dog. I can't really dispute this take on things. Brazil has gotten very expensive, even if you follow the PatmarBeleza approach (and he's not fixated on slim / skinny girls).

Yes, Brazil has become more expensive. Compared to Rio everything is cheaper in the north and north-east of Brazil.
Even so, in Rio there are still many privês charging R$60-80. Just skip the upscale termas and Balcony zoo.

I disappointed my brazil trip. Everything is very expensive, foods, transportation, accomodation and girls. You can live in Argentina, Philippines or Turkey 1 month for the cost of 1 week spent in brazil. I like skinny slim girls, it is really hard to find them in brazil. Also it is diffucult to find decent looking girls. So many fat ugly girls. I visited most of the places in Rio and sao who offers sex.
In Rio, when I walking at centre I saw club Cancun (manhattan) , I just wanted to look inside what it is and I asked to the guard if it is ok just to look for a 2 minutes, he said ok then just after 1 minute I realized it is like a striptease club, which is not my type also I could not see good looking girls inside. So I move to the exit and the guard ask me to pay entrance fee. I did not want to pay and talked with manager but the manager also insist me to pay entrance fee. I paid and left, because I did not like any girl inside, also girls asking to much for short time, it is ripoff and scam, avoid this club.
Next day, I went to the rosario135, it is like a spa message saloon. It is also expensive but the place are very clean, girls are nice and sex was good.
Next day I went to club81, it is dirty place but I saw slim girl, it is better than nothing. Next day I visited st. Tonelera 273, there was also skinny girl but place is dirty and she was not good at sex.
I also visited therma 65 and monte carlo terma. It was ok but nothing special. The high cost is the main rationale that my 4x / yr *Rio trips turned into 3x / yr to 2x and lastly to 1x / yr. *I'm schedule to fly to Rio next week after a year. I did my last Rio trip back in May 2012 and I haven't missed Rio ever since especially after they shut down Scort show agency, Terma Luomo, and killed my other desired daytime options. I don't like doing incalls everyday. Last year, when I got back to USA and did the math, the daily expense came out to nearly $450 / day. When you have better options in places like London, or other cities in the World, you can't enjoy a high-priced Rio. *Every day, I had almost a dozen reliable chiks to choose from who were all fun, hot and completa friendly. Heading back to London for a month in July so no worries.
The argument I'm trying to make as a rational consumer is that Rio prices are not justifiable in my book. My two week trip will be limited to Terma MC (every Tuesday- cabin discount) , Star Cris escorts 2x / week, *4X4 (Mon & Thrs – 2x / wk) , *Cancun (1x every Friday) , Bel Prazer, or nearby top centro apt- 1x / wk) , and Balcony night 2x / week just to check out to scene and programma only and only If I bump into a fresh talent.

If Paris was only 1/3 the cost of Rio de Janeiro, I would certainly spend more time in the City of Lights.
If the talent at Balcony is weak, then why even bother staying at a chica friendly hotel or renting an apartment? No need to bring girls to your place. I was thinking of just staying at a dorm style hostel for $15 a night and just hit the termas.

I've stayed in the one near Saens Pena a few times which is reasonably upmarket and slightly more, less touristy than Copa ones, and handy for VM. The Metro is about 5 to 10 mins walk and it is a short hop to Tijuca or Centro. It is quite small and you should book well in advance. Rio is of course quite expensive now, much more so than before, but people have complained about the prices for years on here. Come to Rio, in fact come to Brazil, simply if you love the place. You can still do Rio on a budget but it is much much harder. If you want to live in style, then you wil struggle.
For those prepared to go without lots of comforts, apart from the hostels, there are many cheap hotels in North Centro (probably best to avoid ones advertising online and just book or a room when you arrive with a backpack). The streets look quite offputting at night at first, but I have stayed there and realised that, although you have to be streetwise, it is not as dangerous as it looks and people care about the neighbourhod even if it looks a bit run down.
Sao Paulo probably has more upmarket girls for your dollar, but the size of SP makes Rio look like a village. And although it has plenty of culture and cuisine it is not the holiday atmosphere city that Rio is. (It's like a country in its own right, not quite like the rest of Brasil but not like the West either.) SP has a first class public transport infrastructure except in rush hour (get a Bilhete Unico) and several ISG members willing to help out those who like to buddy-up (not my style, but probably a good idea).
