Brazil is not Jamaica. You are pretty tough guy until you see a gun or two in front of you and believe me, they will shoot, because your life for them is less worth than even the cost of your empty wallet. Safe travel!Thank you all for your concern for my safety. It has caused me to think some more about my approach to my safety.

First of all we must have our eyes and mind on the task at hand. When walking about in a strange land or even our home town we must be aware of our environment. Who is around us, where can they be hiding, what are the exits.

Second, we need to recognize it when we are tired or had too much to drink. We will not be able to function well in these states and should withdrawal to a safe space until we are recovered.

Third, we should not be in a hurry to go to a new environment. We should do our research. We should RTFF. We should observe before acting. We should know before we go.

Fourth, we should not put ourselves in the line of fire. Don't approach a group of young men at two in the morning. Be prepared to get out at the first sign of trouble. Don't be alone at night. Take an UBER instead of walking.

Fifth, be lucky. While we should do everything to be safe it may be luck that we must ultimately rely on. It was luck that I wasn't robbed and beaten in the LOS Angeles Rodney King riots. It was luck that I didn't attend the business lunch in San Bernardino during the recent terrorist attack. It is luck I didn't die when my car was rear ended and sandwiched between five cars ahead by a truck on the 10 freeway. It was luck I have not been caught between gang violence in Tijuana. It was luck that I have not been gunned down and made an EJK statistic in the Philippines. It was luck I have not had a fatal illness. It was luck I haven't died in an airline crash. And it was luck that I wasn't shot in Brazil.

I will be 58 next month and I love outliving my compatriots. Take care guys.

First of all thank you to all the contributors to this page and for the page itself. I visited Rio two weeks ago and I have some perspectives to share.

I have to say that I found myself surprised at how safe I felt in Rio. I stayed in Copacabana and walked the streets past 2 am on a few occasions as well as walked around Centro. By the way it is really easy to get turned around in Centro even using Google maps navigation. I was approached on many occasions with people speaking Portuguese and I think one Russian. It seems to be a very multi-ethnic city where even this Irish-Englishman looked like he was a Carioca. While there are many homeless in Copacabana I did not see any crime or police action. The homeless were all sleeping at 2 am.

My mongering approach was to try each of the easily available options: Termas, Massagems and online ads.

Sunday. I arrived on a Sunday and so I went to the Hippie Faire in Ipanema after checking in. Interesting, but I was just checking things out and had no intention of buying anything. I was thinking of trying a online advertisement but I was a little confused about WhatsApp. I didn't realize until later that I could use my US phone number (thank you T-Mobile! And I was told that the TIM store wouldn't be open until Monday. So, as expected Sunday was a quiet one.

Yeah, you know getting down and dirty in the apartment was very satisfying. I experienced a variety and can't say it was the best, but each has its points. But it was an awesome party to finish up the trip. You know there were some Americans there who were complaining that the girls were not model material. I had to set them strait.
