I need advice about mongering for short time in SP. We have apx. 10 hour layover at airport and like to spend good time in city instead of kill time at airport. ABGI don't know if it is affiliated with SENAC but it is a Hotel Escola. It was a Brazilian student of mine that gave me this dica. Apparently, it's ranked 8th on 283 hotels in São Paulo. It is fairly new (on operation since maybe end of 2011).
I was attracted by the price. Since last year I've spend several months in Porto Alegre and had a big splurge in Sampa with my GF, during the 2013 Carnival I wanted this time to save money without saving on quality. The only thing I'll miss is not having a kitchenette.
I hit Redway a couple times the past week or so.
My experiences, as follows:
The management there is always very helpful and friendly.
The place itself is fairly nice.
The rooms are nice enough too.
I had fun with 2 girls on my visits, one at a time.
Julha, a dark skin girl, very pleasant, nice body, nice kisses.
Mariana, a very sweet baixinha (cute short girl) , very nice bunda.
The interesting thing is, I had met Mariana previously at one of the trash buildings.
Now she works at Redway and she said, sometimes Cafe Foto.
At the trash place, sex 25-30R.
At Redway. 80-120R.
Cafe Foto / Love story, she said she pulls from gringo tourists 500-700R. We even laughed about it.
Keep your wits guys, mo need to pay outrageous prices.
Last night I decided to check out the newly renovated My Love, located accross the street from the previous Kilt.
They want to charge 50R to enter, comes with 2 drinks.
If you tell them you only want 1 drink, they'll charge you just 25R to enter.
The boate is very nice now.

The rooms upstairs are very nice.
I found the some very nice looking garotas there.
I ended up sitting with a beautiful 19 year old for a few hours, very sweet and pleasant. Exchanged phone numbers for a future rendevous.

At the door of what? Do you mean at the door of the airport after clearing the immigration and customs?
Well, take into consideration that you must go first to São Paulo. At this time of the day it's between (depending of the day of the week) 45m to 1 hour. I guess that you'd like to check in in your hotel: add another 1/2 to 1h. At 21h00, it's too late to visit Redway or other privês. But, on the other hand, it gives you plenty of time to visit a boate (Casarão, Kilt, LoveStory, etc.)
Are you kidding when you ask if eating places are open till midnight? YES they are. Don't forget this is Brazil: people ate very very late. I've seen several times, especially during weekends, people entering a restaurant at midnight or even later.

Is it affordable? It's a little by expensive.
There are better options and if you are into churrascarias there are many that are less expensive and as good as Fogo de Chão.
The best way to find a restaurant it's to limit your search to a certain district. Keep in mind that São Paulo is a very large city, this is why you'll have to restrict your choice only to one (Or two if they are adjacents) district.

IMHO best choice to get a good GDP is by far during the day and at a Privée like Redway.
I have been to Scandallo only once in the least six months. Scandallo and etc, are for rich tourist and people who don't know how another way to pick up a real good GDP.
Kilt Club is also too expensive, GDP's asking R$ 500, 00 / one hour. And no stunners at all!
Casarão is more of a disco, if you are a youngster and like loud music that's the place, definitely not my case.
If you are at the Intercontinental Alameda Santos its a short ride take a cab.
Or, if you prefer you can go by Metro or bus.
Adress : Rua Machado de Assis 449, by bus or metro descent at Ana Rosa Station and walk 03 blocks downhill.

And a BIG THANK YOU to Sui Generis as well, since I always have 10-12 logistical question for him on travelling, hotels, neighborhoods in SP, free-lancers, sightseeing, etc. As I gear up for each trip.
I stayed in two different hotels. The first part of the week I spent my time exclusively with a former GDP at Prodigy Grand Berrini (used to be called Blue Tree Berrini) because it was close to where she worked. The hotel was a bit pricey, but not horrible, $230 / night for a suite, with a very good breakfast included each day. I never would spend that much on a hotel normally, but for a few days with someone like this it was great to have a suite, since we spent the majority of our time having fun inside!
Berrini was a cool area to stay, since there's lots of businesses there, and the metro was 4 blocks away. Things became very lively during the day, especially at meal times. Lots and lots of very hot non-pros! And lots of good places to go eat, drink, and shop. At night there are some restaurants and bars but it is pretty dead overall. This neighborhood is very close to Shopping Morumbi, Morumbi Stadium, and a short taxi ride to Ibirapueira Park, Espaco Morumbi, and all of the massagems in Moema including Red Massagem.
Mid week, I moved to Tulip Inn Convention Flat in Vila Mariana. This place was only $145 a night with breakfast not included, and still was a mini-suite with couch, desk, kitchenette, table, etc. The location of this hotel was fantastic, as I could walk two blocks to Paraiso Metro, walk 10 minutes to Redway, and was very close to Avenida Paulista. There were lots more shops, bars, restaurants and activity in this area throughout the day. The hotel was guest friendly as well. I made a daily trip to Redway with ABG, which was a lot of fun! Vani is always there to greet you with a smile, and its always so comfortable to go hang out there and have a couple beers, preview the garotas, and meet fellow mongerers from around the world! And by the way, that place is full of talent. As always!
I took the subway from the Tulip Inn to the Feira de Liberdade on Saturday which was very cool to see, and I went to Laco de Ouro for churrasco with ABG and our friend one night. It was very close to the hotel too, and unbelievably good food for very reasonable prices! I was also going to stop by MASP and Livraria Cultura, an awesome book store on Sunday, but wasn't able to. These were also very close to the Tulip Inn by metro.

Habitually my favorite playgrounds are.
1) Privês: more precisely Redway and Espaço Morumbi. I didn't visit Espaço Morumbi last year. As I won't stay in Moema this year, I have no intention go visit Espaço Morumbi this time. I'm very satisfied with Redway even if I'm a little bit critical of the rooms (I hate the one on the patio outside and with molds on the wall!)
2) CLínica: My favorite one is still Redmassagem, in Moema. I'll visit that premisse this year. I especially like to have duplas there. Elis is my favorite GDP. A trip to São Paulo wouldn't be complete without a session with her.
3) I always book two or three sessions with free-lance GDP. It's a little bit more expensive but all things considered it is still a very good option. Of course it is almost mandatory to speak Portuguese. There's always a chance to extend your session for several hours (without paying extra money) if there is good chemistry between you and the GDP. So far, I was always lucky. I hope it will be the same this year.
4) I always pick up non-pros in Happy Hours. Just for the fun of hunting women that are not "mercenarias". I still get a kick out of it!

I think that you're asking this question from the wrong end. I think that when it comes to «chemistry» there's really no (rational) explanation whatsoever.
I definitely never go with a plan when I meet a GDP and women in general. The answer lies maybe in the fact that I never consider women as « pieces of meat » or « sex toys ». I like to make them feel unique. Don't forget that I have French blood running in my veins: I know how to talk to women.
Moreover, I am always respectful, polite, I have a good self-esteem of myself, I'm very confident and that's about it.
I don't have extra time with all free-lance GDP. That would be preposterous to say that. But when I have extra-time it always occurs on the first date. I don't know how to explain that. Period. I was always blessed with this capacity to seduce women even if I consider myself an average looking man. I always had the occult power to attract women. When I was in my 20's each time I was in a stripper club I was able to go out after the evening with a stripper without paying any money. Even worse if he reachs a GDP by the internet, if he finally gets someone who answers his phone call and speaks english, almost 99% of the chances are that the guy ends up with some agency, and "bait and swich" is their normal procedure.
As a rule of a thumb, inspect before you get it. Go, see and talk to your GDP before getting laid!
Also forget about boites, if they have personal who speaks english they will generally rip you off!
In the event you want to risk your neck at a boite, negociate your entance fee, most of the boites will lower their entrance fees even if you are not fluent in Porto. nornally entrance fee is paid in advance.
Beware of surprises by ending up having to pay an astronomical bill at the end of the night!
So pay each drink separetly.
Before ordering a drink for your GDP ask the waiter (and not the GDP) how much it costs, all the GDPs have comission over the drinks ans will ask you the most expensive!
Beware of anything you are drinking,
Don't get into a " good night Cinderella " trick, where a GDP mixes some narcotics in your drink so you sleep well and when you awake she's gone and you have been ripped of of all your money, credit cards, etc!
I even know cases that the guy had his clothes stollen!
Do not be an idiot, I've seen many cases of GDP's who work at the "prediões" who charge R$ 30, 00 for one "quickie" during the day asking (and getting) R$ 500, 00 from a gringo at night on a well known boite. You have to be rich and also be dumb to do so! Don't get drunk!
Never go to a motel with a GDP without checking her I'd, to get laid down with a minor is a severe ofense and you will be in big trouble if caught! This is a special warning if you plan to monger at beach cities like Rio, Salvador, Natal, etc.

Bingo! I NEVER go with a strategy or with specific demands when I meet a GDP. I may be swimming against the current because MOST mongers (especially in Brazil) will tell you that when you deal with a GDP it is important to ask her beforehand if she allows particular sexual acitvities (anal, BBBJ, DATY, CIM, DFK' etc.) I prefer to let it flow naturally. If the session doesn't turn out the way I like, then I don't blame the GDP but I can suspect that she was not happy to be with me. I respect her decision.
Last year it turned out very badly with Bruna that was working at Redway: no DFK and she was very mechanical. I reported the fact on the board and it was clear that I had no intention to repeat with her. Period.
I want to stress something else: Nowadays, I prefer to meet GDP in privês because the time you spend with her is scheduled. You bang her and then thank you mam! I did a run of some prives and a clinica in the last 2 days.
Wednesday:
First stop was Redway. I took the metro to Ana Rosa station and walked a few blocks to get to this casa. I arrived at around 4pm and was greeted by a nice guy who is a mestiço (half Japanese / half Brazilian). I guess he's the manager or something there. I was presented with about 12 girls. There was nobody great that I wanted to session with. I was tempted to go with Tabitha (loira) or Mariana (morena who is very petite). I waited around some more, then I saw Juliana, a tall thin loira. Of course with my luck, she had already finished her last session and was walking out the door. Walk around the right side (if you are facing the mall) of the Espaço Shopping mall and once you get to Rua Chafik Maluf, you will see a big yellow warehouse on the left side. The Prive Espaço Morumbi is located at Rua Chafik Maluf 101 and it is on the opposite side of the street from the yellow warehouse and it is also a yellow casa. I arrived at 4:30 pm and was presented with about 8 girls. Man, when I arrived, so did 6 other guys! I hardly have time to write my reports.

The top five ladies? I don't believe in this kind of marketing pitch anymore. Expect to pay more if they know that they are among the top five. At the end it doesn't Worth it. You'll learn that's not the garota at the top that are the best but those who are beginners and want to have customers. The more they stay in this business the less they are « natural ».
I used to believed. Until very recently that there were a difference between Redway and Red Massagem. I used to go often to RedMassagem because it was located in my own turf: Moema. The only reason I would go back there is for a dupla. Now that I'm located in Liberdade it is easier to go to Redway (or Vani's Way) and believe me I was there tonight and the garotas were simply exceptionnal, out of this world. With regards to the Sao Paulo Forum, the quantity of information was at first overwhelming, and it took a while to RTFF (over the course of a few weeks!) , but it was worth it. But I understand that not all of us has the time to parse through several thousand posts mining the forum for the bits of information relevant to ones situation, tastes, specific location and budget. Last year, I generated a document for my own personal use in sampa, using of course, all the material and insights from the forum (many thanks to all of you!). Below I hope the sections on neighborhoods in Sao Paulo, sightseeing recommendations, transit, taxis, getting a cell number, and getting laid at clubs, online, and private houses (brothels) is well summarized (using forum information, peppered with some of my own experiences) :
BEST BAIRROS
(best neighborhoods) in Sao Paulo for logistics, culture, hobby and safety are:
JARDINS:
Best place to stay, and best central location. Ave Paulista has the highest concentration of women working out of their apartments, normally charging R$200. There are however several regular bars where non-pro pick up is possible: Bar Balção, San Francisco, O'malleys (Alameda Itu. 1529. Jardim Paulista). I did not have any success at o'malleys, although, it is a pretty good bar. Jardins over all is a great place.
ITIAM BIBI:
Epicenter for regular non-pro nightlife, or so I read. Also includes Vila Olimpia sub-neighborhood. Recommended regular bars: Azucar Boogie, Corleonne Bar, Dublin (Entry R$40) , Show Bar, Favela, Rey Castro, Moca Bonita, and The Bar. I did like this neighborhood, but never scored there.
PINHEIROS:
Laidback, unpretentious, lively, strategically located neighbourhood. Many live music venues. Less nightlife. Oscar Freire, Bela Cintra and HLobo areas. Regular bars: Bar Mangeira, Salamandra. I actually did not like Pinheiros very much, nor did I score there.
MOEMA:
More remote and thus may require R$120 / night in taxi transit to nightlife areas. Estalagem for picking up non-pros between 5-8pm (Av Moema com Irãe). Moema has no metro, a real logistical bummer.
SAMPA SIGHTSEEING.
Estaçao the Luz, Museo the Lingua Portuguesa, Masp, Edificio Copan, Avenida Paulista, Museu do Ipiranga, Banespa, Vale do Anhangabáyou, Catedral the Sá, Estação the Luz, Pinacoteca. Personally, I went to Museo Lingua Portuguese, Pinacoteca and the Catedral de Sa and I liked them, they are worth visiting. But I was not impresed with MASP. Although the trianon park next to it is a great place to relax and recharge between sessions.
SAMPA TRANSIT.
The GRU airport arrivals exit only has pre-paid taxis. 2nd level has cheaper metered taxis. Pre-paid airport taxis (named Guaricoop) have published flat rate fees to different neighborhoods (I paid about R$135 to go to Berrini and R$165 to go to Alphaville). To save a little doe, one can take the GRU shuttle to the metro station Tiete, and take the metro to your destination from there. (which also has a large bus station.) I am a big fan of the Sao Paulo metro system. One can buy a metro card in nearly any metro station. You can load a maximum of R$200 onto the card.
As for Taxis make sure the taxi driver uses the meter. Many taxistas do not fully know SP and easily get lost. There are two taxi rates: Bandeira A (before 10pm) and Bandeira B (after 10pm). Do not take a taxi that your garota knows or insists on, as you will most certainly be over-charged.
SAMPA CELL:
Bring your passport to nearly any official TIM store, and you can obtain a SIM chip. I personally have used the TIM store on the first level of the Shopping Paulista (a mall, open sundays). The person in the store will register the SIM for you and activate your number (be sure to have your quad-band cell phone unblocked before inserting a SIM chip). The SIM chip costs about R$15. However, once you get the service, my experience was you had go to another store like Lojas Americanas or to a newstand vendor to purchase talk-time / minutes (otherwise known in Brazil as a "recarga" or a recharge). Just hand over your cell number and cash to the cashier and she will rechrage it for you, and you should receive a text message immedatiely statrting your new balance. Foreigners without a CPF can only obtain prepaid cell service. A R$50 recharge will last 6 months, after that, without a recharge, your number will expire and you have to get a new SIM chip. I am not sure if the other providers other than TIM offer prepaid service to foreigners. I can vouch for the fact that without a recharge for more than 6 months, even if you do not use all your minutes, your number will expire. Forcing you to get a new chip / number, and buy minutes.
THE "PROGRAMA" aka "FS"
Some advice I learned from the sampa forum (and I can vouch for its accuracy, as I learned the hard way) : Never pay more than R$200 (2011) for 90min for incall, if that is your thing. As for the clubs, Avoid the garotas that aggressively go after higher end drinks, in fact, get rid of them immediately if they down their drink within 2 minutes, asking for another. Just be a dick, get rid of her, cut your losses for the drink and try to find a less aggressive garota, you will thank yourself later. Better yet, insist on negotiating for FS before hand, and then buy her a drink.
CLUBS. At clubs and freelance bars, where there are many garotas eyeing you as an opportunity, it is best to take the "costarriquense" approach I learned in Costa Rica, which means that, determine what the fee for an hour of FS should be using the pricing insights of the forum and dictate that amount to the garota that approaches you during your negotiation process with her, and don't budge. In Latin America, you are the man, and thus you are the boss. In Costa rica, I learned that you just tell the girl that you only have X amount to spend (X amount being reasonable or average) , and that is the end of it. If she pouts and leaves. Don't feel bad, it is actually a good thing, as the other garotas will see that you are not some dumb floormat that'll pay anything, and guarantees that the next garota that comes your way will be more flexible after witnessing what just happened. Sort of like dealing with car salesmen, if that make sense?
MP (Massage Parlors). Be careful at some MP's, as the cost for the massage can be separate from the cost of FS. Check beforehand on the services included. Many of these sites have "binders full of women" LOL, literally (photos included in the binder with price) , to choose from.
PRIVÊ. Private houses. Just ring the doorbell to enter upon arrival. These are brothels with multiple garotas available inside a private residence. This is my preferred venue. Less complicated, a known and predetermined price, you see the options before you during an initial presentation of the garotas immediately after your entry and you pick, she takes you to a private room with a bed for fucking. Several of them offer you a beer upon entry. What could be better?
RUA AUGUSTA.
There is a place (or rather a street) called Rua Augusta, that is accessible from the Consolacao metro station. There are Approximately 20 clubs (I have read that there are more) clustered around a point about 8 blocks northeast from the metro. Most open at 5pm, but don't bother arriving until 10pm (when the garotas are present). Virtually all have rooms onsite, but not all, so you should ask at the door. This area is a little seedy yet safe and populated area at night. Recommended for the high concentration of FS opportunities in such a compact area.

There is normally always an abundance and nice variety of garotas to choose from, and most are in the 7 range. One or two 8s, one of two 6s. This is by far the best known bargain in terms of chica quality and price. The owners nearly always provide a beverage and occasionally barbeque. This is where I had to pleasure to meet ABG in person. As for the selections, I would recommend Renata, Ana, Sueli, Rebecca, Carla, and Isidora. They were all really good.

But still, definitely worth visiting.

This place had a fairly inconsistent quality range, with skanks to some decent talent (7) , though, it is not that clean. I did session here, but it was only OK, nothing memoriable. While waiting for a beer after the session, a garota asked me if I could put money into the jukebox to listen to some song, and when I refused politely in portuguese, she screamed at me and left very rudely. Interesting. I suppose she was trying to illicit some kind of response. Maybe she was on drugs, donno, anyway, I looked at her if she was crazy, shrugged if of, laughed, and never came back.

There are some other locations described in the forum that some members seem to be fine with some, but are way out of my price range or have inconsistent or bad reputations (according to some reports in the forum of course). So to simplify the mongering selection options, I eliminated the following from my personal destination list:
Avoid: Bahamas (price) , Bomboa (price) , Bon Vivant (price) , Blue Night (lack of quality) , Café Photo (price) , Carribbean (rip-off) , Connections (distance) , Donna (too late) , Emmanuelle (rip-off) , Gauguin (price) , Love Story (noise) , Palms (price) , Romanza (rip-off) , Tieta (quality) , WE (price).
Kilt seemed to be a interesting place go go, but was closed during my second to last trip. (It is similar to Casarao). However, when I was in Sampa, I read an article in a magazine that it had reopened.

If you go outside of SP (eg to Santos) I'd think of it as a major trip. I don't know what it was like 15 years ago but depending on the day and time now I guess you could probably fly to Rio with less hassle than getting to Santos.

MP (Massage Parlors). Be careful at some MP's, as the cost for the massage can be separate from the cost of FS. Check beforehand on the services included. Many of these sites have "binders full of women" LOL, literally (photos included in the binder with price) , to choose from.
PRIVÊ. Private houses. Just ring the doorbell to enter upon arrival. These are brothels with multiple garotas available inside a private residence. This is my preferred venue. Less complicated, a known and predetermined price, you see the options before you during an initial presentation of the garotas immediately after your entry and you pick, she takes you to a private room with a bed for fucking. Several of them offer you a beer upon entry. What could be better?
RUA AUGUSTA.
There is a place (or rather a street) called Rua Augusta, that is accessible from the Consolacao metro station. There are Approximately 20 clubs (I have read that there are more) clustered around a point about 8 blocks northeast from the metro. Most open at 5pm, but don't bother arriving until 10pm (when the garotas are present). Virtually all have rooms onsite, but not all, so you should ask at the door. This area is a little seedy yet safe and populated area at night. Recommended for the high concentration of FS opportunities in such a compact area.

The massage and session was mechanical and not worth the money spend. Upon exiting, I saw better looking garotas waiting in the waiting area. The service and facilities are impeccable, everything is clean and all the garotas smile and seem happy. There is normally always an abundance and nice variety of garotas to choose from, and most are in the 7 range. One or two 8s, one of two 6s. This is by far the best known bargain in terms of chica quality and price. The owners nearly always provide a beverage and occasionally barbeque. This is where I had to pleasure to meet ABG in person. As for the selections, I would recommend Renata, Ana, Sueli, Rebecca, Carla, and Isidora. They were all really good.

The facilities are clean enough and comfortable, and the service is good. But the quality of the selection goes down just a notch, as you are only paying R$100 (end of 2012). But still, definitely worth visiting.

This place had a fairly inconsistent quality range, with skanks to some decent talent (7) , though, it is not that clean. I did session here, but it was only OK, nothing memoriable. While waiting for a beer after the session, a garota asked me if I could put money into the jukebox to listen to some song, and when I refused politely in portuguese, she screamed at me and left very rudely. Interesting. I suppose she was trying to illicit some kind of response. Maybe she was on drugs, donno, anyway, I looked at her if she was crazy, shrugged if of, laughed, and never came back.

There are some other locations described in the forum that some members seem to be fine with some, but are way out of my price range or have inconsistent or bad reputations (according to some reports in the forum of course). So to simplify the mongering selection options, I eliminated the following from my personal destination list:

Kilt seemed to be a interesting place go go, but was closed during my second to last trip. (It is similar to Casarao). However, when I was in Sampa, I read an article in a magazine that it had reopened.

There are buses leaving Rodoviária Jabaquara every 15 minutes our less to Santos, São Vicente, Praia Grande and Guarujá! Take the metro blue line and exit at terminal Jabaquara. Walk to the bus station.
Mongering in Santos / S. Vicente is consistently cheaper than in Rio / Copacabana. Also beaches are much safer and cleaner than in Rio. And the bus fare is much cheaper than an air ticked to Rio. Don´t waste your time in Rio.

Tuesday I had a very busy day. For Professional reasons I went to Perdizes and later in the day I was in Pinheiros. It's always a pleasure for me to walk on Teodoro Sampaio because I have so many souvenirs there: it's like a kind of memomory line for me as it was my first landing point in São Paulo almost a decade ago.
At the end of Teodoro Sampaio I met a girl from Uruguay at the Pinheiros Metro station (linha amarella). She was kind of beautiful but the problem is that she was begging for money in order to take the metro! She asked me if I had $R 3. I gave her all my change. She was in her early 20's, with ash blond hair and with a nice face. She was very friendly. For a moment I thought about taking her to a place nearby in order to have a coffe with her but I realized to my disappointment that she was coughing and I suspected that she was probably homeless. Suddenly, I'll my fantasies to go somewhere else with her vanished. It's not that hard to find non pro in São Paulo and my standards are higher.
When I arrived at my Hotel it was already 2h30 pm. I swam for half an hour in the pool because my legs were tired after all the distance I walked that day on the very steep streets of Perdizes.

have fun!thanks for the info on the santos buses, abg. i'm no sampa expert btw. have probably spent a couple of months in total on various trips in your great city. and i am quite attached to rio and the north (readers will notice the friendly competition between paulistanos and cariocas!). but i wonder if i can add, from my own limited experience, some orientation info for newcomers to sp. you and the locals can correct any mistakes, but it is one hell of a city to get to know, yet pays dividends when you do. yourself and sg have added so much great info on mongering, but basics like getting around i've mostly learnt from paulistano friends there or by myself. so again, humbly, but in case it is helpful to newcomers.
maps and orientation
i have found it helpful to get a map or two before arriving but don't rely on them too much. not only is sp the biggest city in the southern hemisphere, but many of the attractions and so on are widely spread out in various barrios. a good size map of sp and sp state is helpful for planning weekend trips out of the city.
subway maps (metro) . for instance, in guide books and even mobile apps are mostly misleading unless you get a current pocket map from someone working on the station for instance. published maps tend to be confusing in listing a variety of planned metro lines that aren't even built yet but missing the recently constructed yellow line. so get the pocket leaflet map (free) as it tells you what is operational now.
city and barrio maps . if you go to república, one of the downtown stations, there is a tourist information booth just as you come out of one of the main exits. they stock something the size of a video box that pulls out and gives you individual maps for downtown and the various barrios. also included is a book with all the buses (this is a bit more complex than the rio ruas version, see below). it's a matter of luck whether they have your language in stock, but maps and bus numbers are understandable in any language. it's all free.
getting your bearings. the main airport is not in sp itself but in guarulhos to the ne of, a separate, adjacent city with the same name as the airport. the area you might call 'downtown' or 'central' is a bit hazy but can roughly be said to include santa cecília, bela vista, liberdade, consolação, república, bom retiro and sé. possibly the most famous street is paulista avenue, that has a sort of times square feel to it, and it is to the south-west of the main downtown area. after using republica to get maps, and maybe a haircut and change money at one of the many cambios in nearby av sao luis, then you might want to head for the headier atmosphere of avenida paulista. it's a long street, full of impressive skyscrapers, world-class art galleries, tourist attractions, and served by three different metro stops along its length. for practical purposes, most of downtown can be divided into the avenida paulista area and everywhere else.
if you are arriving in sao paulo on the cheap and don't want to spring for a taxi, many people arrive via bus to barra funda. this is a major metro, train and bus station combined, with the usual conveniences such as a good cambio.
some barrios. some personal favourites, apart from the ones that av paulista runs through, that you might enjoy include liberdade, which looks like a familiar bustling chinatown but is more japanese than chinese. for trendy nightlife, vila madalena on the other hand is almost an sp equivalent of rio's lapa, but much bigger and upmarket rather than historic. vila madalena is not particularly close to the metro stop of the same name, and traffic can clog the small roads, but it is worth visiting for the whole evening just for the atmosphere, clubs and cool restaurants.
getting around. sp has a first class integrated transport system but the city has major problems at rush hour. whatever you are doing, it is better to avoid traveling at rush hour if you can. the metro lines are each identified by a different colour. thinking your way around sp, get to know where each colour goes. for instance, the blue, azul, line, running north-south, includes redway (ana rosa station) , the botanics & zoo which is a nice non-gdp day out (jabaquara station) , liberdade (japanese food, asia atmosphere) , the pinacoteca and some other famous museums and galleries (historic luz station. be very careful in the area at night) , and some major rodoviarias like tiete (enormous, in the north) and jabaquara (south). the green line includes redway (ana rosa) , runs along avenida paulista (brigadeiro, trianon-masp, and consolacao stations) and on to vila madalena.
the metros are integrated with the cptm, the railway company which covers the greater city. if you buy a smartcard (bilhete unico) at the metro station, you can use it on the metro, cptm and buses. there are special booths and machines for topping it up on the main metro stations but as with most things, avoid trying to do it at rush hour. the smartcard also gives you automatic discounts on many multiple journeys taken within the same few hours.
buses operate to their own rather obtuse logic, but are often a preferable way to travel. once you get to know the barrios, look for the destinations signboarded on the front. jot down the numbers of ones you use frequently. there are many small bus companies and it can seem crazy at times. if you are waiting for a bus at a rodoviaria, for instance, locate the stop but be aware of quicker buses arriving and departing at the last minute! if in doubt, ask. locals queuing, as well as bus drivers, are generally very helpful and polite. (at least minimum porto generally needed of course, and good attitude.) they will also make sure you get off at the right stop if you don't know the area. paulistanos generally are very polite and you don't have to be on your guard so much as in rio for people trying to rip you off or overcharge.
taxis are not expensive, but given the large distances you will cover, i feel it is usually best to avoid taking taxis if you can, except for short trips on a night out or in case of desperation.
walking is pretty well unavoidable, so have good shoes and an awareness of how far you will be going. much of sao paulo is ridiculously hilly. many of the hills are small but very steep. the multilevel nature of some of downtown almost reminds me of bladerunner, where the elite zoom around in helicopters or don't stray too far from places like avenida paulista, while the rougher elements go about their less sanitized existence somewhere beneath the flyovers and fast lanes.
planning your day and having a 'plan b' is almost essential. it is to easy to get caught in a downpour in some district where you didn't intend to stay long, then get caught in rush hour, and realising that, unless your own private 'copter can pick you up, arrangements often have to be on a 'probability' basis rather than the efficient be-here-on-time etiquette of the western world.
sao paulo can be an infuriating, frustrating place and i can understand why many experienced travellers in brasil avoid it altogether. it has its own rules, its own laws, its own social mores, and it takes a good while to get to know it. it's not quite a bridge to the lifestyles of the us and europe, but it can make much of brasil (except for belo) look like the dark ages. you can experience a degree of sophistication here that is almost unknown through the rest of the country, and the mongering has an eye on quality and price.
these are all personal views and observations of course, but i hope some readers will find them helpful, especially if you are making the leap and planning to visit for the first time.

I went back yesterday in the late morning and early afternoon to Perdizes for two reasons:
1) I was looking for copy of Raça by one of my favorite poet. The original edition appeared in 1925 but there was a reedition in 1972 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Semana de Arte Moderna. Needless to say that both editions are expired and hard to find. Hopefully there's a very usefull tool in Brazil called Estante Virtual where you can find used books everywhere in Brazil. There were few editions availble ranging from R$10 up to R$350 (original edition and autographed by the author).
There were only two copies available in São Paulo: one in a remote place and another one in Perdizes. The copy at Perdizes was available at R$30 which is a fair price for a rarity like this. When I arrived on the spot on Rua Cardoso de Almeida there were no signs whatsoever of activity at the Sebo. There was a sign on the door: Closed for renovation. As I was on my way to leave. With a broken heart. A man opened the door in order to get in his car. I asked him if the Sebo was open and he said no there were renovating Inside. I plead pro domo for my cause telling him that I traveled the distance from Montréal Canada especially to get this book (which is partially true but sometimes you have to lie in order to obtain what you want). He owner of the sebo was a very nice guy because he said to me to come back in 30 minutes because that would give him enough time to look for the book in the turned upside down sebo. Maybe 10 minutes later, as I was taking pictures of the very beautiful district of Perdiz (one of the most expensive and quiet district in São Paulo. Um bairro nobre. If I'm not mistaken) I heard the Sebo manager calling me on the street. He was running behind me with the copy of Raça in his hands. I thanked him warmfully handing him R$40. He said to me that he had no change. I said to him keep the R$40 in order to thaks him for his effort to please me. He refused to have the R$40 and he went instead to a bank (which incidently was close by) to give me back R$10. I'm very impressed by the generosity and helpfulness of the Brazilians. This is one of the reason why I love so much that country and the people living there.
2) The second reason for my visit to Perdizes (a corollary of the first one) was my intention to visit Pacaembu footbal stadium. On my way to Praça Miller and Pacaembu I took pictures of « dream houses » in Perdizes. I was picturing myself living in one of these houses if I were a millionaire. Naturally the stadium was closed but I asked a security gaurd if he could open one of the gate because I wanted to take pictures Inside the stadium. After a moment of hesitation he let me in but he asked me not to step on the turf. I took several pictures and thanked him.
I realized for a second way in a row how difficult it is to walk in certain bairro of São Paulo: Perdizes is one of them. All the Streets are either going up or down. You can see the regular posters here, and they are the ones to ask regarding SP mongering generally! I admit, if I was arriving at Tiete, I'd probably just stay on the train and get off at Ana Rosa and Redway ten minutes gentle downhill walk.
Transport looks straightforward enough, but if you are changing at Luz at a busy hour, it is very easy to be swept along with the crowd, and concentration will be advised to make sure you are heading for the Yellow Line to Pinheiros (direction Butanta).
That was a nice long list you posted. I trust Sui Generis and AltoBomGosto will be duly spending a month or so writing full descriptions on each.

I need to get a IP address to view GP guia, but it is worth it to get the local intel.
Good effort PB1 but I Wonder if this list is still up to date? A quick look reveals that there are a lot of venues that doesn't exist anymore. Take for instance prive Jaceru. It doesn't exist at least for the last 5 or 4 years!
My advice: consult GP GUIA.

I would be coming from Rio via bus, arriving at Tiete station. From there, azul line south to Ana Rosa, do a session at Redway. From Ana Rosa, take Verde line, transfer at Consolacao station to Amarela line to Pinheiros, where I would walk about. From Pinheiros, I would take Esmerelda line south to Vila Olimpia.
So, the above could take a two days? So, I would need:
A) to locate the best motels (see below, please advise if good ones? I am used to paying 79R for pernoite. 2000 to 1200 at a motel in Rio)
B) the active Prives (will take advice and scan the Brazilian boards)
ISG is great, BTW. I am sorry to the SP board if I am asking questions already answered. I am going to do my own research on google maps and the brazilian boards for a possible June or July side trip to SP via bus from RJ.

Thanks for your PM Patmar, but I should point out I am not an SP expert (if I've posted a lot, it's mostly on the Rio board, the same as you). You can see the regular posters here, and they are the ones to ask regarding SP mongering generally! I admit, if I was arriving at Tiete, I'd probably just stay on the train and get off at Ana Rosa and Redway ten minutes gentle downhill walk.
Transport looks straightforward enough, but if you are changing at Luz at a busy hour, it is very easy to be swept along with the crowd, and concentration will be advised to make sure you are heading for the Yellow Line to Pinheiros (direction Butanta).
That was a nice long list you posted. I trust Sui Generis and AltoBomGosto will be duly spending a month or so writing full descriptions on each.

It's time to wrap it up and summarize my 2013 trip.
1) The first intent of this trip was professionnal. I had less time to hobby (I didn't hobby during the day time)
2) In order to be closer to my professional activities, I have decided to move from Moema to Liberdade.
2a) I don't regret my choice BASED ON THE FACT THAT IT WAS A PROFESSIONAL TRIP.
2b) My hotel was fine, clean, quiet and inexpensive.
2c) The proximity to a metro station (São Joaquim) was something very positive.
2d) Negative aspects of Liberdade: the localisation is too urban for my taste and except for Japanese / Chinese restaurant there's not a lot of good restaurants.
2e) If it were only for a LEISURE TRIP I would come back to Moema.
2f) In Moema there are more restaurants, clubs, shopping and things to do at night (swing clubs, privês and a lot of free lance garotas). I have also a grilfriend living there but I didn't want to visit her this year.
2g) The problems with Moema are the following ones: during rush hours you are trapped in thisi district.
2h) Because the proxomity of Congonhas the sound of planes arriving or leaving may be disturbing.
3) I would like to thanks once again ABG for his disponibility and his kindness. I met new and old friends
3a) Old friends: Betinho, MVBill, Carnage, Renton, RickWake, Eros.
3c) New friends: Ricker, Nimpus.
4) This year I visited mostly two venues
4a) Vani's Way: clean place (better than RedWay on this aspect), Juliana - the manager - is very effective.
4b) Garotas in the 6 to 7.5 range
4c) I had two very good experience: Yume (mestiça) and Anny (maybe the highlight of this trip)
4d) Anny a slim and tall blonde with curly hair: she gave me a A++++ service
4e) RedWay was the place I went more often
4f) NEGATIVE aspects of Redway: sometimes there are too many people in the waiting room. Considering the number of rooms available it can be a problem
4g) They added two new rooms in the back of the patio: avoid them, they are too small and there's no toilet inside. On the other hand they are always a lot of people chatting on the patio. It may be disturbing if you are looking for intimity.
4h) This year - according to my taste - the choice of garotas at Redway was below what I used to find there. Last year, for instance, it was exceptional. This year they had few exceptional garotas ((Ellen was an exception: she was stunning but her service was poor)
4i) Beware sometimes you may find local customers that are drunk and are looking for trouble (it happened to me once while I was with a French colleague).
4j Very good mention for Tabatha, Emily ( for their service hors pair) and also a good mention to Mariana for her kindness
5) I pay a quick visit to Privê Flor Alvim: I didn't hobby there. Nothing that catched my eyes. Beware: this bairro may be rough for a gringo.
6) Went to RedMassagem. I regret that I didn't have enough time to go there more often. It was, it is and it will remain my favorite venue in São Paulo. Garotas are in the 7.5 to 9 range. It is a little bit more expensive (but you can pay less if you pay in cash and post on the GP Guia) but the experience is unforgettable if you take the advantage of duplas.
7) On a personal level this trip was gratifying because I came back home with a fabulous contract
7b) I met a nice Japanese non-pro
7c) I bought a lot of books I were looking for
8) I'll be back in September. As my hotel will be paid by the people that are inviting me, I don't know where I'll be located nor if I'll have time to hobby.

Up to now Moema is an isolated bairro. In terms of metro access (long awaited stations will open probably in 2014).
I received several PM asking me what is the best way to go to Red Massagem.
To be honest I go there on my "automatic pilot". A kind of "garotadar" I have acquired over the years.
The only way I know to go there by bu (ônibus) is the following one.
Take the Metro Line 1 (Blue Line) and exit at Santa Cruz.
The Santa Metro Statio is also a (small) Shopping Center.
Go to the basement of the shopping center.
Take the last bus of the line (the one closer to Rua Loefgreen). Unfortunately, as I said, I know the way by heart and I don't really know the number of the bus.
It must be one of these but I think it is the number 576M-10 (not 100% sure about that)
