Thats pretty good advice, going to PI for me its really important to stay low key and not cause too much friction. However, I do believe that assuming the locals will be fair and kind to us just because we are very friendly is naive. I agree with you in regards to the kindness aspect and do so myself while I'm there but being a little vigilant on is also important. That is China's ISG PhotoGallery. Quite embarrasing. The first page has just one picture. 15 posts. 14 without pics (including one of yours). The second page has only one post with pics. Hard to take them seriously as they are infrequent posters, or not regular pic posters, or did not post a counter-example pic. If you are in a position where you feel that you are forced to open your encrypted folder, you just open the outer volume which contains harmless personal information and files.

Download True Crypt and spend a while learning how to use it properly. It's free and is virtually uncrackable.True Crypt is an awesome program, but it can be intimidating to use and it does have a bit of a learning curve for anyone who's not computer savvy. So as you've said CS, spend some time learning how to properly use it. Search you tube and you'll find plenty of tutorials for using it on either your computer or a flash drive. Most times a program like that is "cracked" not via brute force, but rather via the end users use of a weak password. Make sure you use a long one (at least 8-12 characters, but better is one that's about 24-26) that contains a good mix of letters (both caps and lowercase) , numbers; and special characters that have nothing to do with things like your DOB, DL number, SS number or other semi-private info that can be commonly found by a Google search of your name.

If you're really paranoid you can first use a steganography program to hide your pics in a pic, but be sure you get a stego program that does not change the file size or metadata of the original photo. I occasionally use a stego program that I obtained via a previous employer (a quite expensive DOD approved one) , I can not recommend any of the free ones; perhaps someone else here can?

One other tip: make sure you delete not only your browser's history, but any saved form history, user names and passwords which Windows has a nasty habit of automatically storing. A free program called "CCleaner" (stands for: Crap Cleaner, LOL) is a quick and easy utility for doing that. Just make sure you "check" the boxes that say "Auto Complete Form History","Saved Passwords" and "Network Passwords" in the "Cleaner" section as they are left "unchecked" by default.

Yet another reason why all photos should NOT show identifying features.Millions of businessmen traveling the globe use encryption software to protect their proprietary files and use cloud based storage to both share as well as back up their files; and many laptops already come with Zip software bundled onto them. So I don't think the simple act of having any of them on your laptop will raise any red flags, but for the truly paranoid they can always delete the apps from their puter before entry / exit into the country and re-install it after they have arrived / left.

The other reason I don't see them doing this is the time issue. Can you imagine how long the lines would be at customs & immigration if every traveler were asked to boot up their laptops just to check if they have certain programs installed? And the ensuing protests if a businessman from say a company like BAE Systems or Lockheed, both of which do a lot gov work, were asked to open an innocent encrypted file, but one that is simply sensitive or worse yet S / TS classified?

Also consider that some of these programs run in the background with no visible signs that they are even installed or they can be renamed and hidden deep within your system.

I'm sure that the good folks at customs & immigration already receive some cursory training in these matters, but unless you're caught with your pants down at a random check or if you've raised their suspicion level for some other reason, then they would have no reason or probable cause to check your laptop. And if they do check it, I don't even know if they could force you to open encrypted files without a court order (maybe someone else can answer that?). But I guess they could always seize your laptop and perform a forensic examination of it; which I don't know if they can do without at least having probable cause and I don't know the legal justification for them doing that incident to a cursory check at an airport and not incident to an arrest (again, maybe someone else can chime in on that topic?).

So IMHO I think it's highly unlikely that we'll see any widespread checking of laptops / tablets at the airport (s) and without specific IT training (and time) then the majority of the inspectors would not be able find any thing overtly suspicious.

according to wolfram alpha, the phils rank 139th in the world with broadband upload speeds averaging 0.6 mbps. if a zipped hi-res pic is 1mb (8 mb) , and i've got my math right, then an average connection would send it to the cloud in a little more than 13 seconds. 100 such pics would still take only 22 minutes or so. this would seem to correspond with pip jaeger's rough observations.

i am reassured. i think my strategy will be to send encrypted, zipped photos to the cloud and return through us customs with a clean laptop. i'll try to choose a host with robust wifi, since wifi speeds vary according to the backbone connection and the hardware and also how many users are sharing it at the moment.

in an ideal world, we wouldn't have to worry about stuff like this since we are doing nothing illegal. in reality though, there are all kinds of do-gooders trying to combat "sex tourism" and their efforts do not always comply with the rule of law. i can imagine fitting someone's profile and getting a thorough looksee. it would not be the first time that customs singled me out for special screening re-entering the country, although the concerns were different at the mexican border.

As we mostly view the pics on our computers then you don't need to shoot at a higher resolution. The only reason to do so would be if you're planning to print them to anything larger than 8"x10". I usually shoot most of mine at the medium / medium low setting (my cam is a 12MP point and shoot) and the pics wind up at about 3-4mp. When compressed they're usually down to about half a meg each; so the time to upload is much faster. I reserve the higher res shots for when I've zoomed in on something, macro images of flowers (like the Pinay "Roses" and "Orchids", LOL) or am taking a wide angle / distance shot that I know I will be cropping later (sometimes better to zoom out due to camera shake) , but most of these types of pic are just regular "scenery" shots anyhow.

So you may want to post the pics then attach the PDF file with the pics for zooming in.I think I'll continue to post in pdf-only format. That keeps the thumbnail from showing. One of my concerns is the girl's face. Even when blurring the face in the full shot, when you shrink it to thumbnail size, the blur is less noticeable, and the blurred parts become more visible. When I post in pdf, there is no thumbnail (on my end) that's visible to non-members.

An aside. A few days ago when I posted a pdf, I logged out. The login boxes were clearly at the top of the page. There is always a message that pops up saying "all cookies have been cleared" or such. I clicked the 'back' arrow several times to get to the PG. The thumbs were showing, so I clicked on one, and the pic popped up full-size. I opened several more like this, all while logged out. Ouch. Later, after I closed / re-opened the browser window (Firefox) , the pics would not pop open while logged out.

The girl in PG #6568. Sometimes good things come in an unusual package. I'm walking down Burgos late one afternoon, towards Makati (and near the Makati end) , and she is one of many girls on the sidewalk, right near several uniformed massage girls. She was mid-late 20's and her body was straight as a plank of wood: not a curve to be seen anywhere. Her jeans and t-shirt could easily have been 10 years old. No smile; usually the girls smile or 'pssst' or 'sir', or something. Nothing. Just a stare as I walked by on my way to Wild West to have a drink and stare at the eye candy. On the way back up Burgos, she was still there and as I went by she said "Excuse me sir." I just kept walking to my hotel. A few hours later I was walking by again, this time headed for some chow and she was still staring, no smile. I stopped to chat. She was almost too shy to speak this time. She finally mentioned the hotel and I mentioned food. Off I went for dinner and on the way back stopped again. I bought her an ear of corn, and she talked briefly about being new on Burgos, needing to provide for her son and daughter. I told her that since she was new, and a good mom, she would not like my stuff in the room: everything plus pics. She said "OK." Um, does that mean you are ok with everything + pics? Or, are you just acknowledging what I said? I turned to walk away and she said "OK can we go?"

I gave her the 500 + transport, and walked her down to the corner of Burgos / Kalayaan where she got on a jeepney. The next day she txt early in the morning wanting to come back to the hotel. I was surprised. Late that afternoon I sessioned with her again for 500 + transport. She made no sign to leave. I took her to fast food, then we went to the market for some fruit. While there I got her some rice for the family, and was putting her on the jeep again after dark. Just before getting on the jeep she asked if she could take the food home and come back. I handed her an extra 500 and told her that if she came back tonight, there would be no more money in the morning. Two hours later she was back at the hotel and spent the night. I took her into one of the Burgos gogo bars (her first time) for drinks. Once in the bed she was ready for action and: I was not. In the morning I had to boot her as I was transferring to a hotel in Malate.

Lets hear the rest of the story please.She would txt repeatedly for re-visits. I had a date that night in Malate and put her off for a day. Over the next 8 days she would come over for 4 more overnighters and be happy with 1K. We became chummy, and one of those nights she showed up unnanounced (from Makati). The front desk called and said a girl was waiting downstairs. They didn't give her name, they asked me to come to the lobby. I went downstairs and the clerk at the desk pointed outside. I went outside and the door guy pointed down the steps and around the corner of the service entrance. This was like a puzzle. I walked into the dark service entrance and the plank was standing there. Did I miss a memo hun?"No. Just I want to see you." I didn't have a date and wasn't horny, so we went out for pool and dinner and drinks. She is comfortable and nice to just hang with: she likes to converse, loves to talk media, celebrities, politics, and music. Back to the room and slept with no sex. Turned her loose in the morning with the blue note + jeep. She had gone from the fraidy-cat thing on Burgos, afraid to take her shirt off, to loving and fun in just a few sessions. More later.On a more recent trip I discovered that she has, at age 28, a vast knowledge and range of music. She hums and sings a lot of older stuff like Barry Manilow and newer stuff like Beyonce and Taylor Swift, like any pinay. One night we walked down to Bedrock Cafe near the circle for appetizer and beer. At 10pm there was one table of guys dead center up front, there was the two of us, and no band. It was Friday night. Isn't that place normally rocking with dueling live bands on the weekends? The guys at the table looked rough. Hard to describe; like Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, harsh in the face, leather jackets (no shirt underneath) , tough guys. As our foods arrived they got up and started strapping on guitars. Ahh, the band finally. They started right into a heavy metal set. From the very first song they were doing the head-banger bit, throwing their long hair up and down, screaming into the microphone (ala Judas Priest) pure angst. My date, the plank-next-door, joined right in. She'd say to me stuff like: "Anthrax! Ya!" What? I'm checking my beer for a white powdery substance, and she's rocking out. The band was playing to a crowd of exactly two customers. Even though metal is not my thing, I must admit their energy was all there, and they did not let the empty house dampen their performance; it was powerful and the songs were evocative of the 70/80/90's."This Deep Machine!" Who? Deep Purple?"No already they play that Smoke on the Water. This Deep Machine! I love it!" Oh."Do you now powerslave?" Is that a group hun?"No. Its Iron Maiden. Do you like it? I love it!" That's the second time I've seen a metal band in phils (Cowboy Grill).

I was way out of my league here. On the walk back to the hotel I asked how long she'd been a metal-freak."Long time. You like?" Not really, just regular old rock."Journey? Rolling Stone? Almond Brother?" You know those groups hun?"Yes. I love it. You know Marshal Mathers?" Only somewhat."He better than Tupac. I love him more." Aren't you the girl who was crooning me with Barry Manilow in the hotel? And Beyonce in the shower?"Yes I like Beyonce. Who is Barry?" Mandy. You were singing Mandy in the hotel."Oh. Yes I like that song. Did not know the artist till now." Wow, finally something she didn't know. Back in the room she would sing me snipets of songs to see what I liked. She hit on one from Les Mis and I mentioned that I liked the play."What play?" Les Miserables. The song is from the play."No its not. Its Lea Salonga." Yes, I saw her sing the song at the Chandler in Los Angeles 20 years ago. Its a famous story and Broadway play."I don't think so. She's famous filipina singer." Oooookay. She started singing a rock-a-billy song and I thought it was Elvis, but it was someone else (she googled it for me). Her range of musical likes was all over the place, and she was singing songs that were older than she was, and some of them she knew biographical info about the singer / band, and others she had no clue who sang them."Kenny Chesney have 30 inch pants size." She knows a lot about both Arnel Pineda and Steven Perry (most Filipino have no idea who the latter is).

The musical lesson was great. This went on more times on more overnight sessions. This kind of thing is another indicator of the GFE one gets in phils. Our common love of music has filled our time together with more than sex-and-get-out. She's fun to be around.

Just about every girl I've met here has a love of music that goes to the depth of her soul. I reckon for many music comforts them as they sit alone, bored and waiting; music seems to be their best friend.

I was never much of a fan of Journey, the Carpenters, Barry Manilow, Air Supply, etc, but during this go here I've really developed an appreciation for how genuinely their lyrics touch these girls. I'm always on the lookout for songs that are unknown to them but I know will move them. I play my mixes for them (which keeps them away from Nicki Minaj and other autotune drivel) when they visit and most often they want me to upload it to their mobiles. Just another way to have them think of me when we're not together.
