I am not a frequent writer to this forum but do travel to Thailand at least once a year. During that time I add a report if it will add to the forum in a positive way.
I come there to have a good time and enjoy the company of the ladies. I enjoy there sence of humor and their company, and taking them to dinner. This comes along with the sex. I don't mind being seen with a lady who is working or is a freebee. Those observing me wouldn't know the difference. So I do have to disagree with those who feel they wouldn't be seen with them. Each to his own but I have enjoyed mine.

So the question is..should I just go to BKK or should I venture to Manila and see it first hand. If it makes any difference..I will be travelling alone and without my wingman. Should I make a recon mission? Any MUST see/do in PI for such a short period of time?
Any pros/cons that make 1 better than the other. It seems from RTFF and my LOS experience that the prices are about the same for room/board and companionship. So I am looking for your esteemed opinion on which you think is better and why, or if it is really just 6 of this or half a dozen of that.

You are somewhat right. Many of the younger girls from my experience and living here now in general that the younger one's do have a boyfriend and not a pimp as you say. Many of these boyfriends are so selfish like most Thai men I know and hear of is that it's all about the money. They know they are screwing Farangs for money and working in bars but who cares as long as the money keeps coming in to support them. Regarding thai ladies drinking whisky, mostly they drink ladies drink or juices in bar. It cost you and money goes to gogo bars owners. But freelancers drink beer or hard drinks in discos. But I like women who drink whisky, because it make them naughty and more sexy, and they are not shy.

Overall, I think the Philippines are cheaper than Thailand. Also, the women seem less reserved. I've sat in coffee shops in Robinson's Mall in the middle of the afternoon and had young attractive girls come up to me and offer their services. If I wasn't interested in them they always had a sister or friend they were willing to call.

CTI've been to both BKK and Manila. BKK twice and Manila once. I do enjoy Filipinas and have had some great experiences with them. If I had the choice between going to either I would pick BKK. I guess I'm more familiar with BKK and know my way around better. I found Manila a bit cheaper and liked the fact that more people speak English there as well.
I'm sure there are good arguments for either. You might enjoy a change of scenery. Many good ISGers who can give you good info on Manila and the Philippines and share their contacts with you.

Nearly all the bars are closed tonight. Soi Cowboy is silent except for the remodeling being done on some of the bars. Walked down soi 22 -- there are a few bars open but they have their lights turned off. You can still get drinks in the restaurants - had a meal and a tall beer at Bourbon Street, and The Penalty Spot (near Soi 27) is open as well. You can barfine girls from the latter - some real cuties in there, but quite expensive I imagine.
As to the discussion if you can tell if a girl is a working girl or not, well, sometimes you can, sometimes you can't. Never been to the Philippines but as a person who spends quite some time in Singapore and met quite some Pinays here it seems to me that they are indeed less reserved. Maybe it has to do with the language as Pinays speak English much and much better than Thais.

I have enough experience to know that I (and anyone else) can pick a high percentage of girls that are hookers, but I also allow for the possibility that my guess could be wrong in some cases.
Some P4P girls are able to carry themselves well enough to be quite unsure. Some Thai P4P girls are still shy and dress very conservatively in public.
I believe even the Thais will peg some girls as probable hookers who are actually not.

It's pretty universal throughout Thailand and one of the things my wife hates. I had to work a long time to get her to go with me because she didn't want to be thought of as a "hooker." She has changed her ways a little and might hold my hand in public.

I'm with you FF. While Farangs are less concerned about what the appearance/image is, the Thais are generally much more concerned and don't want to kiss or embrase in public for example.
This is a big contrast to some European societies that are very kissy and huggy when meeting even just friends.
Exceptions are Pattaya (where anything goes) and long time bargirls who have got used to the stares and don't care anymore. Long term bargirls can lose the ability to discern when they should act very prim and proper and when they can be wayward. These are types that you don't really want to be with.

1. real estate market has cooled down a lot but not crashed. but asia is behind in the crisis a few months i have the feeling
2. no. but you never will really integrate with thai. the differences are just too big. but an advantage of this country is that there are so many expats and pensionados

If you don't know anything about Thailand, you had better do your homework before considering retirment here. It's a totally different environment and the differences between Europe are great. A lot of expats have tried, and a lot have failed and moved on. One man's paradise is another man's hell. I gave it five years and had enough. I am married to a Thai and we visit several times a year for a month or two. Even my wife is glad to see Thailand from the window of a departing 747.

First of all, you can't buy a house. As a Farang you can own property, but not land. Therefore, you must buy a condo and there are lots of regulations there.

I think MPs along Rachada Road (Poseidon, Emanuelle and such, Google for MPs) would be your best bet if you have limited time, don't care much for dating/GFE, and if looks are your #1 factor in choosing.
Minimal hassle, best looks, decent (but never outstanding) service. Price/performance ratio is not amazing (4-5k baht for what you can pretty much get for 1k with an ok-looking street meat), but I think a good fit for you on the first holiday.
Don't let the taxis take you to MPs, and avoid Phetchaburi road (many MPs there, but not high quality IMO). Do your research and go there yourself, e. G. Take subway to Huay Kwang station and walk along, can't miss them.

I am such a good hearted guy, that I am usually willing to report and share. No truthfully, orginally I posted her pic but no name or number. This is the 4th. Consecutive of my holidays / vacation trips to BKK.
The mongerings scenes are the same with a lot of MP'S and lightweight on Nana and Soi Cowboy go go bars.
Definitely, I am enjoying the sure bets that I can get from MP. 'S girls for a 2500baht session. With a decent GFE. Style. The bars are now full of sharks who are real hungry with the downturn of economy in NEP.
It is great just to come for a few drinks and the shows, but it may not well worth the money and effort to bring back to the hotel.
However, the overall BKK experiences are well worth long haul trip from USA. At anytime.

No need to worry about the tape measure. Just do the width by eye. I was talking about distince from one side to the other. We cannot go round measuring all the girls carefully.

Because these taxis offered no seat belt and drove like maniacs in cars of sometimes questionable condition, I have resorted to taking hotel and airport limos for 500 all included.

I would be transiting through BKK next month.
In 2006 I had pulled off a good transit fun in Eden. That time I guess it was old Airport and I had 6+ hrs with me. It was comfortable.
How far is Sukhumvit from new Suvarnabhumi Airport? I would had some 5+ hrs with me. Is the traffic predictable these days or still it is bad BKK traffic? Also, I will have to spend 45min-60min for Visa on arrival.
Does anyone think 5+ hrs is enough to go to Eden and come back? (15:00 to 20:30 hrs)

I would be transiting through BKK next month.
In 2006 I had pulled off a good transit fun in Eden. That time I guess it was old Airport and I had 6+ hrs with me. It was comfortable.
How far is Sukhumvit from new Suvarnabhumi Airport? I would had some 5+ hrs with me. Is the traffic predictable these days or still it is bad BKK traffic? Also, I will have to spend 45min-60min for Visa on arrival.
Does anyone think 5+ hrs is enough to go to Eden and come back? (15:00 to 20:30 hrs)

A visa is simply your permission to vist Thailand on a temporary basis. There are several different kinds of visas. When immigration stamps your passport at the airport, upon your arrival, that stamp is a visa which grants you permission to stay for 30 days. Americans can get the same. Some other countries get only 15 days with their visa, but it is still a visa.
Look at the stamp -- it says: "VISA" followed by the date you must leave Thailand.
Permission to stay for longer periods of time, and upon different conditions, require a different kind of visa obtained by application to the Thai embassy or consulate in your home country.
The website is misleading in this regard.

At the times you have traffic can be problematic. You might make Sukhumvit in thirty minutes, you might make it in three hours. One never knows. Especially with the trouble in BKK these days.
Visa on arrivial is usually pretty quick. If you are from the U.S. you just need a stamp in your passport from immigration.

I had to deal with this shit last summer. I was rushing to get out of the states and did not investigate the possibilities about duration/ length of stay. The deal is that if you apply and send in your passport to the Thai Embassy in the USA, you can apply and get a 60 day visa. I do not know the cost, but just look it up.
But if you just arrive in Thailand the only way to extend the visa is to do either a border run to Cambodia and deal with the assholes that work immigration there, or pay a shit-load of Baht (I believe it was around 180.00 dollars). at the Thai immigration and get an extra 15days WHoo HOO!.
Otherwise if your there for a short stay just opt for the free 30 day visa upon arrival!!!

Hmm, good point, but where would you pay now? They took away all of the booths that sold them. And as long as you have a boarding pass, how would the checkers know it was not on the ticket. All they look for now is the boarding pass.

My experience is, when you fill out on your landing or arrival card, the date of your return flight, for example 5 weeks later than arrival date, they give you a 6 weeks tourist Visa Exemption automatically without any questions, this when your passport is from a country under the 30 day rule like for those 40 Country’s list.
From the required documents, they have never asked me: To show my return ticket or even the 4x6 photograph, I never paid any 1000Thb, no evidence of finance etc asked for this as a EEC citizen as Mick mentioned on: http://www.traveller2000.com/Thailand/visa/information.htm., here it’s 30 day’s for 40 Country’s –
I never had any additional questions from immigration beside the fact that the law here say’s that you must have that " fully paid return ticket " for VISA?
Looks like all these rules do not apply if you go for a " so called temporary VISA "at entry who knows, maybe only ok if no additional investigation on luggage or other suspicious subjects are done.
I arrived many times even twice last year without any return ticket and bought the return one always at Chawla travel at Patong 2 since I did not know in advance where I had to go from BKK. To be honest, I don’t want to take that risk of "no return ticket" anymore if I can avoid it (know guy’s with a bad experience on this one)

I did it once. (Overstay the VISA exemption period). There is a fine per day of overstay that is steepish, 1000 Baht or more per day (I forget exact number).

i think you are somewhat stuffed. passports always get stamped.
one option that is not very legal is to have two passports.
i once lost my passport, got a new one, and then the old still unexpired turned up again. at this time it was possible for me to use one passport hidden away but have the other one findable for prying eyes without all those trips to thailand.
but once the authorities notice (probably won't as long as you are consistent), the older passport will be confirep001ed and destroyed immediately, as officially its invalidated by the new one. but thailand won't know you have a new one if you have never used it in thailand :)

However, on this occasion Fifty is travelling with his Kazakh Girlfriend, who needs to apply for a 'Visa on Arrival' at the airport.

My wife knows that I fly on Thai Airways and make a stopover there, but does not normally know for just how long. On my last visit I bought some ink stamps from MBK which I use to blur the date on my visa stamp, although I guess that I can only do this for so long! No, it is most certainly not business as usual. You will in all probability not be able to come to the country, even if you want to. It is advisable, in my opinion, to change your trip to the Philippines (Angeles City), or possibly Cambodia (the best way into the latter now is through Kuala Lumpur, though those flights may be full now). Or possibly cancell altogether and delay travel.

I was thinking the same thing. If you were not supposed to be there, you are in big trouble. You better take the first train south to KL that you can.
On the other hand if you are legally there on business and on the expense account, it could actually be a good thing.
My fear though is that this standoff is very likely to get nasty and dangerous. I don't see PAD backing down and peacefully leaving the airport. At some point though, someone has to go in there and get them out. If they don't go peacefully, the airport could be damaged and out of commision for some time.

I never went to Khaoshiung road before so she met me in Gullivers near Nana the next night, then we headed over to Gullivers on Kaoshiung later that night, we soent a couple hours playing pool and dancing downstairs.
I had to fly very early the next morning, so I said I need to go back to my room. She never asked if I wanted ST or LT or anything else, so I didn't know what was going to happen. We found me a cab and she asked If I wanted her to go, of course I said yes. We went to my room, we showered and did the dirty deed. I had to leave for the airport 90 minutes after we finished, so I slept for a little bit and got ready to leave. She still didn't say anything about money. "Khaoshiung' looks like some place in China. Thai names don't have a "sh" sound at all.
You must mean "Khao San" road. I see the previous guy spelt it rather wrong too. There is no perfect spelling in English but we can get close sometimes.
It sounds like "Cow Sarn" for English speakers.
Incidentally "Khao Saan" means "Plain milled white rice".

Yesterday was stranded in BKK :( Very depressing...

Yesterday, outside Bangkok's international airport, a Bangkok police checkpoint was overrun by a group of the PAD demonstrators. Maybe a day late but to the poster (or others) wanting to know about flights KL to Singapore. There are currently about 20 a day on either SQ or MH and about 3 a day now on Air Asia.
If you get a ticket they are basically interchangeable so if miss one flight or want to change form one carrier to another very simple.

After going to Pattaya, my views on BKK have always been "it is too bloody expensive" and avoided the place as far as possible.

Well, some of us work in Bangkok so I guess that answers your first question. As for Soi 33 (aka Soi dead artists and now looking on to beat Soi 24/1 in number of Massage joints) the prices have always been high. They are higher because the bars do not want to attract the Cheapos.
The fact is, many places prefer to have 20 relaxed and wealthy customers rather than 60 cheapos that will moan and groan about everything.
At the end of the day, the 20 wealthy guys will spend as much money in drinks as the 60 cheapos.

So being stuck here for a few days I thought I would nip out for a knee trembler under the auspices of a business meeting - her indoors safely tucked up with her friends.

When I made the mistake of going a couple of weeks before xmas, about 8 years back when all the young british and eurostuds where there all that was left for me was the more crafty, older dragons (late 20's). The watermassage places still rocked. THEN, suddenly right about Xmas eve, the place cleared out until the 1st and the only other punters there were Arabs, Israelis (you can tell them apart by the facial hair) and subcontinentals. The odds get really good again between the 24th and the 1st because the younger lads must have gone home to their families. That was my take. Well, charm has little to do with having a sex gik, all you need is to live here. Most of these girls are married or have a steady Boyfriend already, you are here for her when she wants a change of pace, a fuck or something else.

Well Bold, I like both places, Pattaya and Bangkok. Bangkok is not more expensive imho. Bangkok is just different. I don't know where in Pattaya you get a Beer for 35 Bath, but in the Gogos, there is not much difference between BKK and Pat.
Bangkok has a better Freelancer scene. In Pattaya you might find FL at beach road, but you must be lucky to find a pretty one. In Discos are FL, but in BKK the selection is better, imho. In Pattaya the most pretty FL have Foreign Sugar Daddies or Sponsors, so they can choose their customer for the night and usually the like the very young guys. I am 39 and in quite good shape. In BKK Discos I have no problems to get the most beautiful girl in the club, in Pattaya they often stick together with teen or tween guys.
Hotels are not really more expensive in BKK than in Pat. Ok, if you go to Soi 33 there might be other prices, but in Pattaya I were this time in the Nova Platinum Hotel. Overall, Pattaya is about half the price of Bangkok. Girls in Bangkok much much better. Many times go a whole night in Pattaya without seeing a good looking HO.I would have said that Bangkok is about 30 to 60% more expensive than Pattaya (food, hotel, drinks, etc.) in average. The main difference (in my own experience) are the ST and LT rates with girls: it's still not too difficult to find cute freelancers in Pattaya for 500 to 800 baht ST and 1000 to 1200 baht LT. In Bangkok, it's more 700 to 1000 baht ST and 1500 to 2000 LT for approximately the same "quality" of freelancers. Available girls in Bangkok are often older than in Pattaya (again in average) but usually speak a better English and are probably more "stylish" and less "childish".

My update on overland escape route from Thailand. Here is the link to my previous post.

Paid 2500 Baht per person. Was given an itinerary which started with pickup from our Soi 4 hotel at 4:30PM. At 4:30 we head to another hotel and pick up a couple on their honeymoon. Then, to a small bus depot right in downtown area. It definitely was not Ekamai. There was no terminal. Just some picnic tables, and the omnipresent outdoor Thai food kitchen. Travelers arrived in groups, then were organized into a Kuala Lumpur group, a Phuket group, etc.
Eventually we depart on a double decker coach, sometime after 7PM. Arrived Surat Thani at around 6AM. Had some breakfast, and changed to our second coach. Left around 7AM, arriving in Hat Yai at 3 PM. The roads in Southern Thailand had experienced significant flooding, but still we made reasonable progress all the way to Hat Yai. In Hat Yai, there was some confusion about where and when our next bus was. It eventually showed up. An antiquated school bus, with too few seats. Another 90 minutes to the Malaysian border at Sadao. I think it was here in Sadao where we changed back to another clean comfortable coach. Cleared Thai customs, back on the bus, then pull off bags to clear Malaysian customs. Everything went smooth. Drove about 1 hour south, and stopped for my first Malaysian road stop dinner. It's about 500 km from the border to K. L. , so about 8 hours driving. Arrived in K. L. At around 2AM, and had to find a hotel. Sure enough, there are plenty of low grade flop house type rooms, that might have sufficed, but we were beat, and those wouldn't do. By luck, found a Swiss Garden, just a 5 minute walk from the train station. A very nice buffet breakfast was included.
Next day, took the 11:30 bus to Singapore, paid 39 Ringgit ($1 U. S. = 3. 6 MR). Left late, at around noon. Clearing Malaysian customs was quick, but Singapore's took about 45 minutes. So, finally arrived at bus station well past 6PM. Spent the night, and thankfully, we were confirmed on our flight out that very next day, since it was 100 percent full.
One of the members, Blair, made a great point about the bus from K. L.. Singapore being easier and cheaper. I know the airfare is pretty reasonable, I heard about $50, but then there's a long ride out to KUL (international airport), and waiting for a flight, cramped space, etc. , I found the bus to be a very relaxing trip. I had my laptop, watched a movie, listened to podcasts and music on my IPOD, read the newspaper, etc. He mentioned 5 hours. Our trip was just under 7 hours, but we did have a long wait at Customs, and then very heavy Singapore rush hour traffic.
We stayed at a nice hotel right on Orchard Rd, but I'd probably try Blair's Geylang Road suggestion next time. I'd also like to do some adventuring in K. L. The Malaysians really seemed to be very hospitable, with a friendly attitude towards "westerners". Very good roads in Malaysia, and just about everything I saw in Malaysia seemed to be better maintained. Maybe Thailand tourism will lose some business to Malaysia after this debacle.
The Bangkok airport siege is now over, but the backlog of passengers is estimated at over 300, 000. It's going to take quite some time to get everyone home, but to me, the real question is how long will it be before many of these tourists will want to come back after having been through this ordeal. I am happy for the people of Thailand that their crisis has come to an end, that the red shirts and yellow shirts put aside their differences, and politcal stability returns. I hope to return within a few months.

I had a greta route planned. Walk across the border into Cambodia, taxi to Siem reap, and a plane through HCM to Hong Kong where I live. But before I set off this morning, and as we were going past the airport anyway, I nipped in quickly, and walked up the the Cathay counter. Repatriation flight was available at 11. 30, 14:00. 16:30 and 19:00. One way, 5000 baht. On the 2pm, and back home now. Hope you enjoyed your trip but a word to the wise, the airport is functional, and basically empty. People seem to be staying away so it was a most pleasurable experience today. Only bad side is that all the shops have no Marli Lights in stock. Half sad to miss out on the adventure, but hell, I'm home and only 1k HKD down. So if you're stuck, get your but to the airport and walk onto a flight. Easy peasey.

One of the members, Blair, made a great point about the bus from K. L.. Singapore being easier and cheaper.I think this whole trip would have been a lot easier and faster via regular public transport. If anyone ever needs to do it again (these days in Thailand you never know . . . ) just go to Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal and catch a VIP bus to Hatyai, 12 hours. Then another to KL, about 7 hours. Or if you're in a hurry, taxi from Hatyai to Alor Star just across the Malaysian border and fly to KL. You could leave Bangkok after dinner and be in KL for lunch the next day.

I have been in hotels beyond a month, once for over a year. You can always negotiate a discount, bit its best directly with the hotel reservations director\manager. get things like free Internet or breakfast included or not.
An apartment is probably a better option for the money, but if you are looking for hotel type living then a corporate or serviced apartment is what you want.
Personally I would look for the newest hotels since they will be pressed to fill and more open to offering a bargain. with a lull in high season visitors for many reasons, keeping up occupancy numbers will be more important than bickering over price for a hotelier.

From what I can see (massive Layoffs), the tourism industry is hurting, badly so if you want to negotiate hotel discounts, NOW is a good time.
However, I am seriously thinking of riding the train on this route. Has to be nicer than a bus.The train is great. Get the "Butterworth Express" which leaves Bangkok Hualampong at 2:45 in the afternoon. I like to read a bit, listen to podcasts, enjoy the scenery etc. till 5 or so when I go to the dining car for some food and a few beers. Come back to my bunk and the bed is already made up (the one you want is 2nd class sleeper lower bunk). Get a good night's sleep, wake up at 6:30 just before Hatyai. It then carries on to Butterworth/Penang, arriving about noon. Traveling the slow but civilized way.
