For a change of pace I would like to showcase the most important contribution that soi 11, Sukhymvit Road, makes to improving the lives of mongers (and everyone else). While I don't promote and particular bars or girls, I would like to share some excellent eating establishments on this busy lane.
First is the great German restaurant called the Old German Beer House. It has open-air dining for an air conditioned section for the hot days. The menu is huge and includes good Thai food for ladies who aren't interested in pigs knuckles or wienershnitzel. My English pub, The Pickled Liver, has gone so I have to leave the soi for bangers and mash now. But it has been replaced by a French bistro (Chez Pape) which is a needed addition to the soi. Next door is an excellent Spanish restaurant (Tapas Cafe) with a wide selection of Iberian food at reasonable prices. Of course Thai food is available. My favorite is Rosabieng which offers outside dining in the garden (OK in the cool season. Bring bug juice) or air conditioned inside. A wide selection of great Thai and Isaan food in an old mansion. Very popular with Thai residents of the area. For Indian food there is Mrs. Bulbirs on soi 11/1 behind the Grand Business Inn (which also has a good selection of Thai food available all the time). There are several Italian restaurants; none are bad. Soi 11 has a wide variety of street food especially late at night. Since you can't take durian into a hotel room, I have to fall back on green mango or jackfruit. Although not a restaurant, I will mention one of Bangkok's best foot massages, Bai Po, also on soi 11/1 right behind the Grand Business Inn. I have Thai friends from upcountry who make this a mandatory stop on every visit to Bangkok. There are three 7/11 stores for convenience shoppers and the indispensable Villa Market (0700-2400) for everything from the Bangkok Post to Johnny Walker Black. Also food.

Was just there last Thursday and took the Issan wife. She DISLIKED the Thai dishes she had. Too sweet. Mrs. Bulbirs (spelling) on Soi 11/1 is top notch but now I partake in their food in the food court of Robinson's at Soi 17 at a lower price instead of their restaurant ambiance. Thanks for bringing the good times back.While we are walking down the road of nostalgia about the happy days in Pattaya a few decades ago let me mention the excellent hotel, Siam Bayshore, on the waterfront where rooms were B400 / night with business discount. They had eight tennis courts for people that did that kind of thing. Boats with roofs that could seat a dozen people could be rented on the beach for B400 / day to take visitors to the offshore islands for a day of private swimming on pristine beaches followed by lunch at one of the many seafood restaurants in the islands. A Phuket lobster cost B100. We always brought along a small cooler with two bottles of cold white wine and a couple sticks of butter to melt for the lobster. Dolf Riks ran a high end European restaurant on the beach and after that it was every man for himself.
One of the dangers then, and still existing, is the aggressive activity of transvestites who ply their trade among unsuspecting foreign visitors. We have all heard stories about innocent mongers being duped, usually while intoxicated.
