The latest snippet from BB's email:
All you Pirates are for sure chomping at the bit to get some definite dates as to when the hotel will re-open. Until we have some concrete info on international flight schedules and border restrictions provided to us from the Airlines and the DR government, a firm date for us to announce the opening of the hotel unfortunately remains unknown.
I saw the last email newsletter, but any folks on the ground there has any better information?

Per the latest newsletter, it's still not known when Blackbeards will reopen. The DR state of emergency has been extended. Restrictions may be re-evaluated on August 9, but this will likely depend on whether the country is able to get its COVID-19 rate under control. Alas. The good news is that none of the staff or the chicas have gotten the virus.

I personally apologize to everyone for not contacting you sooner. However, over the past several months we have faced numerous obstacles and changes regarding the reopening:
A presidential election on July 5th, 2020 and inauguration of the new president on August 16th, 2020.
During this whole time the country has been through several different night time curfews; these curfews will end September, 5th 2020.
As a result, by ending the curfew at night, this will no longer affect your night time travel.
Over the next several weeks we will provide additional requirements regarding tourist travel to the Dominican Republic.
Your Safety.
I have contracted ECO-LAB (one of the largest chemical and sanitizing companies in the world) to come in and train every single employee on how to use their products to sanitize rooms, common areas and provide hand sanitizers throughout common areas of the hotel. We do however, recommend you bring your own masks and hand sanitizer for your room as these products are difficult to procure locally.
As all of my veteran pirates know, I am a fanatic about cleanliness and can assure you that we will exceed even the CDC recommendations. My promise is to keep you safe.
In the meantime, please check with the Department of State and your airline regarding any issues that you may encounter with traveling to the Dominican Republic.

Got newsletter today, repeated what has been said. Taking reservations now, opening Sept. 15. Restaurant and chicas will operate as normal. Due to curfew some of chicas & crew will stay overnight since they can't go home & break curfew.
Look forward to some reports on the re-opening! Hoping to get down before the end of the year.

Airfare from DC to POP is absurd ($877), so I'm looking at other options. DCA to STI is $570; however, by the time I factor transportation ($180 are / T), the delta is $100. Should I just stick with POP or is STI worth it?

The last trip, I used TropicLink based on recommendations on this board. I believe it was $75 round trip. Since I flew in and left very late in the evening (or very early in the morning), I was the only one in the van. It had wifi, water, etc It drops you off at your hotel location, including Blackbeards. I have arrived on one hotel, and left another. Some seem to get this for less. Tropiclinks dot net is the website, they have a USA number for questions.
It is always better to double-check, right now for some dates in October POP is cheaper.
Santiago is much cheaper to fly into for me than POP.

N_R.Due to prices I always fly into STI or SDQ.
When flying into STI, I take a taxi from the airport to Caribe Tours LOS Jardines for about 600 DOP, ticket to Puerto Plata was 210 DOP (if I remember correctly) and then 500 DOP from the Puerto Plata bus station to Blackbeards. The bus takes about 1 1/2 hours and pre-covid there was a bus every hour. You can catch a taxi across the street from where the cars exit the airport. Make sure you tell them the Caribe Tours LOS Jardines station otherwise they will take to the nearest one but the buses only go to Santo Domingo from that station.
This of course would only be viable if your flight landed in the daytime and was not a night flight.
Last time I went from Boca Chica to Puerto Plata, I caught the direct bus that does not stop in Santiago. Total trip time was about the same as driving and I believe the ticket was less than 300 DOP. The Uber from Boca Chica to the Caribe Tours station in Santo Domingo was 900 DOP so about 1,700 DOP for the trip.
Of course the taxis and buses are a bigger hassle than hiring a car / taxi or other services.

I could save money by flying into STI and then taking a taxi or bus to Sosua but I put a value on my comfort and time and the amount of money that I would save it is a no go for me but I understand if other guys look at their finances and life differently than me. I have flown into both STI and SDQ once each to try it and there is no way in hell I would do it again to save a few bucks.

I traveled by bus. Fuck that never again. The BUS itself is fine but dealing with Dominican efficiency and respect for timeliness (delays) AFTER I've spent all day getting to the airport at home, dealing with TSA and all the other traveling be. S. Means I'm willing to spend a bit more to relax more. Straight to POP from now on.

It was an enjoyable experience to see the country from the bus window for 2.5 hours. It was comfortable. I was astounded at the amount of trash everywhere. What a truly shithole country in some ways! Everyone drinks bottled water since they never built a desalination plant and proper pipes-so they all drink bottled water and throw the bottles everywhere. Ridiculous. Disgusting.
I don't think I would be comfortable right now taking the bus because sitting in a small closed space with random people for hours is a recipe to get Coronavirus-and there is no way the the. Are. Government has stamped out the virus there.
I really enjoyed my few days at Blackbeards. Hot enough -though pushy at time-girls, fair prices, decent food. I suggest taking the nearby gondola cable car ride and checking out that scene during your down time. The beaches were meh at best-full of trash like the whole island.
There were a couple of decent enough restaurants nearby for variety. Keeping the girls overnight was a much much better deal then a short time stay. I planned on going back this year, but that's on hold until 2021.
If I were to go now: I would ask the front desk if there are any girls. They know that aren't there that they could contact to come spend a couple of days / nights with me--and then I would try to isolate with one of the more 'scared' ones who generally are staying away for now--but will come out occasionally for a price--I would guess. The risk of covid form them may be less. But, really, its all Russian roulette right now-is it worth risking your life or the life of others for a blow job?
Overall, I think the medellin girls are hotter--ut there def. Are some gems--and having everything: food, bed, chicks in one spot made Blackbeards fun for a few days. If they had more girls of Medellin quality hotness -I would stay longer. It took me 3 days to rotate through all the ones I would stick my dick in. In Colombia-you never run out of hotties. YMMV.

I must say I'm quite surprised I wasn't expecting the sky to open and FR's start raining down upon us. But I thought for sure a few from this board would take the dive immediately after they reopened on the 15th. It seems like they're doing whatever they can to ensure the safety of both the chicas and the guests. The most current newsletter received on the 4th of October indicates that some nights they have had as many as 20 chicas available. I don't know how that would compare to the average number before the pandemic but seems reasonable enough to me. It also says that they've had veteran Pirates as well as some new faces I hope it's more than just a trickle of clientele and they can hold on until things normalize again.

The answers you seek are readily available with a simple keyword search in this thread or in the FAQ on the Blackbeard's website / buried treasure newsletter. Otherwise you're just going to be met with the cold shoulder and a suggestion to RTFF. I have no doubt there are numerous members of this thread that would be happy to assist you in answering any questions you may have regarding topics that are not already covered in detail. That being said I am new myself and looking forward to making my maiden voyage to BB's good luck in your search and hope to see a field report detailing your experience.

I won't pretend I know the ins-and-outs of the Dominican economy but with that being said tourism is a huge part of it. Tourism is likely the reason that they dropped the requirement for the negative covid-19 test on the 15th of September and switched over to random. I personally think daily testing would put a lot of mongers and chicas off and likely hurt the economy even more than this virus already has.

Plenty of info on the Blackbeards forum about getting to the resort from each airport.

JustWatching, I hope you haven't misunderstood what Blackbeards is all about. The chicas are there, on-premises. They will come up to you and ask if you'd like to spend time with them. You might want to go back and read previous posts here to see more about how that works.
Blackbeard's is located in a quiet, gated neighborhood called Costambar. I am unaware of any other action there. If you want to get out, you could go to Puerto Plata or Santiago, but neither place is renown for its supply of women of negotiable virtue. What's more, transportation to and from is sometimes difficult in the best of times--and is even more restricted now that there is a curfew. Given the short time you're going to be there, I think you'll find lots to keep you occupied at BB's.
There has been discussion here between guys who prefer the thrill of the hunt and guys who prefer the point-and-click aspects of BB's. To each his own. But if you are more of a thrill-of-the-hunt kind of guy, you might want to rethink your plans.

You can read a few pages of what it used to be like in this forum. Changes in BB because of COVID-19:
1. Almost all activities (costume parties, bikini contests, disco, etc.) have been suspended, but there are plans to resume it soon.
2. All staff wearing masks, most clients ignore it completely.
3. Unless you are a tripod, forget about social distancing in the room.
4. Restaurant and bar continue to operate as before with two tables left empty for social distancing, prices in pesos remained the same (at least for those dishes I remember), so your buck goes a long way.
5. Many activities before a curfew are available just like before just wear a mask.
6. Beach in Costambar is open and even more deserted than before.
If you do not mind staying at the hotel after a curfew and can handle a lack of activities, you going to be fine.

What are the prices like at Blackbeards?Pre Covid, the prices were approximately $45 US. This is basically for one pop. There are different prices for overnight, 2 girls, etc. If you want a specialty, like anal, I believe that you negotiate a price with the mamasan. I haven't been in two years. TRANSPORTATION: I flew into Santiago (STI). Another flight had arrived just before mine did, so there was a long line at immigration. Fortunately it moved quickly. My cell service (T-Mobile / Android) did not automatically connect right away, but after about 30 minutes in-country it did. The driver from Blackbeards was waiting for me with a sign with my name on it. It was about a 90-minute journey to Costambar. The driver obligingly stopped at Jenny's market so I could change money and buy some bottled water before arriving at BBs. The $90 charge for the ride was added to my bill and I tipped the driver in cash.
CHECK-IN AND ACCOMMODATIONS: I was a little disappointed that the room I had reserved, D2, was not available even though it was after 3:00 and the previous occupant had checked out. Still, I understand that these things happen. I paid for a room in cash and up front and was installed in D5, which was similar to D2 but didn't have as nice a view. The bedside lamp switches were a little fiddly and I occasionally had to twist the lightbulb to turn the light on or off. One night I killed a large roach that was crawling the bedroom wall near the ceiling. Again, these things happen even in the best of places. The bed was big and firm, the room was very clean, and the AC, fridge, and TV worked fine. I was quite satisfied.
COVID: I wore a mask in the common areas. So did the desk clerks, managers, cleaning crew, maintenance team, and waitstaff. Only about a quarter of the other guests were masked and only a couple of the chicas were. Because the common areas are open on two sides, there is abundant ventilation, which I assume lowers (but does not eliminate) the risk of passing on the virus. I went to Blackbeard's and left a review here a while back an would love to return when its safe. (Maybe it is now?I track the virus in several countries every day using the map on the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center. The stat there that I think is the most meaningful is the Active Cases number, which you can see by selecting the Active Cases tab at the bottom of the map, zooming in on the DR, the clicking on the dot there. Active Cases = Total Cases minus Recoveries and Deaths. This morning, there were 26,438 reported active cases in the DR. This number has been increasing since November 8, when active cases were at 19,802. The increase has been comparatively gradual--nothing like the dramatic spike we see in the US. The current number of active cases translates into 2. 44 active cases for every thousand people. Rates per thousand in the US are four to five times that in most states.
The problem with this data, of course, is that it is generalized--we don't have specific numbers from Blackbeards or comparable establishments. My admittedly amateur conclusion is that overall you are less likely to contract the virus in the DR than in the States, but that you are certainly taking a greater risk in the common areas and bedrooms of Blackbeards than you would take walking down the street.

Business wise it is extremely hard to run. Firstly it is very hard to please demanding tourists who want everything 5 star accommodation to food to service to girls and not willing to pay 5 star price. Upkeep expenses must be steep. Political and other connections who needs to be greased to keep it running. Now that the owner is gone will be hard pressed to get a buyer who will run it the way like before.

I question the idea that the investigators hired by the controlling legal authorities need ISG to know what is going on in their own country. This is a country of men, not laws. Now this is changing. I worry that the heirs of the late owner would not wish to own a place like Blackbeards. It has certainly happened with online businesses where the owner died. When Bruce died TSM was shut down in a heartbeat by the daughter.

Just spent a week there. There weren't many guests but there was plenty of girls. I though the quality of girls was high. When it came to curfew hours they just closed the gate and kept the bar open until 11 pm, and the girls who weren't staying over went home.
The main problem with BBs though is that it is somewhat isolated. I got a taxi into Sosua and he charged me $50 each way. The taxi transfer from STI was $90 each way as well. So taxi transfer from STI and one day trip to Sosua cost me $280.
I did have a good time at BBs though and the girls were cool. Its a shame about the owner, I hope someone keeps the place going.

I was there at Thanksgiving in November, and I'm pretty sure the bikini contest started at 4 pm.
There were several people who were not guests, they just came to watch the show.
No cover charge or one drink minimum as far as I know but most people bought drinks or food. I think the show lasted a couple of hours.
In my case, I was sitting at a table near to where the girls were staging for the show so I bought a few large bottles of beer and got some plastic cups from the bar so the girls' could drink. The mamasan got all the girls to say "Gracias" to me. Three large bottles of beer with 10% tax was about 20 bucks I think, so it didn't exactly kill me.
I don't think there are any short time rooms, you have to rent a regular room.
The owner died while I was there (December 4th). I had a discussion with some other guests about the future of BBs. I commented that that it should be ok because prostitution is legal in DR. However, another American guest who has a business in DR said it could be shut down because "Technically, it is a brothel". If you see the set up there, its obvious the girls aren't merely freelancing on the property.
He also told me that a developer had bought the land across the street from and planned to build high end condos. Depending on the buyers, they might not want BBs across the street, and if politically connected they could put pressure to close it.
Given the location, if BBs didn't have girls there wouldn't be many reasons to go there. I think it would struggle as a regular hotel. It could be torn down and the lot used for a mansion I guess, but then you are just selling land, and there seemed to be several vacant lots and properties around the area of BBs. One place just around the corner from BBs was selling condos for $35 k US, but the place looked empty.
Personally, I hope BBs stays open because it had a lot of fun and would love to go back sooner or later. The prices for girls are very reasonable as well. BBs ST is 2500 pesos; Some freelancers ask for $100 US (5800 pesos) and someone on the Santo Domingo thread just reported a girl asked for $500 US in a club.

First of all I don't know where you would get such a test in DR and secondly, if you do test positive you will be barred from going home. This new rule makes things significantly more complicated. I started wondering how easy it will be to get a fake test. Get a friend to take it for you or just put water on the swab. I'm sure 1,000 pesos would grease the wheels. Even if you are negative you don't want to run the risk of a false positive that could get you stuck overseas.

I have done this all over the world.If you have ever experienced the way Dominicans drive, you would not need to ask that question But seriously, I have rented cars from POP on several occasions, and while it always turned out OK in the end, there were multiple nuisances that I prefer to avoid when I am on vacation. Excessive insurance coverage fees, nonsensical claims of vehicle damage, the awful Dominican roads and drivers, high cost of gas, absence of secure parking. There are lots of issues in renting a car in the DR that I prefer to avoid, when possible, for my own peace of mind. YMMV.

If you are in Blackbeards, Constambar for example, you relatively isolated and at the are at the mercy of the local taxi bandits if you want to leave the area. For me a rental car would be necessary.
In Sosua, I can walk to everything beaches, shops, restaurants and bars, so no need. I got a publico buddy on call who will take me anywhere I need to go outside the area. He always shows up on time, and a trip to PP is only 500 pesos each way. (regular taxi fare is around 50 dollars).
So, like most things, its a matter of individual circumstances and necessity.

I have done it and it certainly affords you freedom. I have also been stuck on a lonely mountain road, with a flat tire thanks to the bumpy rides and discovering that locals can be very friendly and extremely useful but I speak the language.
You will often have motorcycle / scooter riders (these are ubiquitous and often young and careless) passing on your right. This is the most serious problem. Often times that can be fatal if you are not watching that side (I am speaking from the viewpoint of a US / European driver. UK might be different). In addition, when and if there is an accident, it is essentially a possibility for getting mobbed because, being a foreigner, you are supposed to have deep pockets. Finally, personally, for me, the road conditions are such that you may want to rent a SUV or higher clearance vehicle.

If you have driven in some countries with no real traffic rules you should be fine. Many do not respect traffic lights and will cut you off. And as others have said if there is an accident it is 100% your fault.
I do take total insurance which is offered at the counter. It doubles the rental price but worth it for the peace of mind. I never had any accident except for a flat tire. Local people helped change the tire and refused money offer. Had some dings at the parking lot but since I had total insurance no problem. Apart from that my credit card has built in insurance. However strongly suggest getting full insurance at the counter.
Had great adventures with rental which otherwise would not have been there stuck in Sousa drinking and fucking and sleeping.

Ain't no such thing as courtesy in DR, especially when it comes to driving.
Also worth noting is that a lot of credit cards come with insurance and the car rental places make their money from selling you insurance, not by renting cars. They will try to pressure you into the insurance but don't give in if your card has it.
When they are going over the car with you make a video so you will not be charged for something that was already there. As Temp said, SUV is the way to go although I went back to the compact this trip because the price difference was half, I was not traveling out of town, and I was already familiar with the potholes and drainage ditches of the roads I would be traveling. This is a picture of a wreck I had some years back in the northern part of the country.
That being said, I have been to the Dominican Republic over 100 times and have only not rented a car my first 4 times maybe.

One time, with a flat tire, on a lonely mountainous road, a young lad came back, took off the tire using the jack, and on his friend's motor bike went to a tire repair shop, wherever that was. He came back, perhaps after 30/45 minutes, tire fixed which he put back in as well, all the while I was sitting by the roadside, on a chair which too he had brought out for me. I did pay him but no one can pay some one for that kind of favor.
On another occasion, I was, close to Santiago Rodrigues, I hit a rock sitting in the middle of the road. It was dark and I did not see it. The car stopped and I got out to discover that the underbelly was resting on that rock, wheels up and spinning and would obviously not budge. There were a whole bunch of kids around, who all came running and without even my asking, started to heave the car sideways and got the rock out in a few minutes. Again, I paid them some money but truly, how do you thank them?
Once, an idiot rammed into me on the Santiago / Pto Pta main road. I did not even bother to speak to him about his insurance as the poor fellow most likely did not have one. A guy I know in Sosua, took me to a body shop who fixed the bumper for perhaps 3 or 4 K pesos. When I returned the car, no one knew about the accident and so there was no extra charge which would have been probably 10 times higher.

However, I still have the question! (What happens if you test false positive) Do they quarantine you at the hospital? Do they let you go back to the hotel for quarantine? Can you retake the test? I went from Sosua to Las Terrenas, then to Punta Cana. And back to Sosua, then a driver to Blackbeards before flying back. I didn't have any problems to Las Terranas, but going through all the small towns, there are tons of trike drivers in each little city. I didn't hit any, but it seems like only a matter of time if driving lot's, and you may be up a shit creek, according to some reports and talking to other gringos while in the country. From Las Terranas to Punta Cana, it is mostly fairly modern roads. Even though it looks like a relatively short distance as the crow flys, I guess there are not direct roads due to the terrain. I had to drive just east of Santo Domingo and as I turned east, had to pay the gringo tax for some bullshit. I think I gave them $1000 pesos, told them that was all the cash I had. No problems to Punta Cana. On the way back to Sosua, fairly nice roads, but had to go through a few small towns. There was some sort of checkpoint for all cars, no extortion that time.
Not sure If I will rent again if I go to Las Terrenas from Sosua, but who knows.

The weekends I was there, curfew was at noon, so only 1 shift chicas working 10:30 AM for 12 hours. About 30 on each weekend. During the weekdays, about 8-10 daytime and at least 20 night shift. The staff is still the same minus a few, no new ones. The rapid antigen test they have set up is in Puerta Plata for 2000p, results and tests in less than 1 hour. What I am curious about, the reason why I wrote to the original poster as to whether he has had a personal experience is that, the three other places would not budge from their 72 hours time horizon. This other place on the other hand is speaking of an hour? A typical PCR test in my personal experience, took about 24 hours on two occasions I took it. So I am little skeptical of the kind of test this lab in POP is doing. As you said, only PCR and Antigen tests are acceptable by the CDC and if it is truly one hour, it has to be a "rapid Antigen test".
I would be curious to know more about it, including the acceptance of such a test by the airlines, not to speak of how reliable, in reality, the service is, in terms of their one hour promise and the duration of process. I know someone who went to Clinica Bournigal and had to hang around, essentially for the whole day, just for the sample, apparently in a crowded space.

The chicas dress and they take pics, then go back to normal. LOL The current chicas are pretty good right now. About 40 total with normal shifts, even during curfew. The weekends I was there, curfew was at noon, so only 1 shift chicas working 10:30 AM for 12 hours. About 30 on each weekend. During the weekdays, about 8-10 daytime and at least 20 night shift. The staff is still the same minus a few, no new ones. The rapid antigen test they have set up is in Puerta Plata for 2000p, results and tests in less than 1 hour. I came back from Blackbeards a few days ago, was there for only a day and change and had to fly out. Everything is normal, the girls were fine, meet some cool dudes there as well that helped me with a phone connection. They have a place were you can go to take the antigen covid tests that were accepted by jet blue when I came back to the states. I'll be back in a month or so.

The food at BB is decent, and there are a couple of good restaurants on the beach and nearby. The beach is ok here, not the best. I haven't been to Sosua in two years, but if you read the forum, you will get the latest info. I am hoping to get there this summer so I can see what the changes are. A few more bars in Sosua, it has a nice beach with lot's of restaurants on the beach and around town. Cabarete is about 10 miles from Sosua. A very nice beach, a little more expensive. You will see a few chicas peddling their wares, but probably best to use Tinder, etc. Depending on how much time you have, Las Terranas is on the North east. Beautiful beachs there and on the way from Sosua.
Lot's of other places of the island for beautiful beaches.

It is immediately on the right as you enter Costambar. Yenny's always has good rates. You have to go to the back to change the money--just say "cambio" when you arrive.
Also, get provisions at Jenny's.
I have not been there in a while so I can't answer about Covid but once the Chicas are drinking I don't think you can make them stop from dancing. Blackbeards is not a club. However, some nights upstairs at the Parrot Bar they have some theme where the girls dress in certain colors etc.
I don't get the "happy hour" at Blackbeards. It is 5 pm, happy hour, 6 pm etc. And I do not believe there is any difference in price, service lece etc.
Sometimes the girls want you to make "appointments". Do so if you want but remember when they show up for the appointment, you need to pay regardless of how you feel. So I never booked "appointments".
Just relax when you are there and ask the other guests questions. It's a good spot and great fun.

Easy to walk around the community, the beach restaurants a few minutes away, Jennys, and some other restaurants easy walking distance.
I don't speak much Spanish, no problem at BB, haven't had a big problem in Sosua. Let some basic phrases, like "how much" and learn your numbers. Or, use translation apps.
For transportation, I have used Tropiclink. You can search for that. I have posted about it before, and I found out about it on the BB thread. You can probably search on this site for information.
I don't remember what I paid, but it was much cheaper than having BB arrange or using a taxi. It is a shared ride, but I arrived very late in Santiago and had it by myself. Not sure where you are located, but they have a US number you can call, or you can book online.

One is as you enter the city center -there was a shop there -can't recall the name, second one most recently is at the super mercado as you drive towards the playa dorada area (its off the main road) . They have booths inside that mercado for claro and one other (Vivo I think). STI airport should itself have options -but I never waited there enough to look for it.

Columbia just removed a lot of restrictions, Brazil should take control over COVID in a few months, so DR is losing a competitive edge. The price hike is not significant for weekend warriors, but for those staying for a week or two might be a deciding factor. For those with a set budget, more spending for chicas would mean less money left for the hotel.

Sosua is relatively safe if you stay in the main areas and don't act stupid. The food onsite at BB's is pretty good, but there are some other restaurants in the area, and some on the beach. If you are going anywhere else, read up. You probably won't see the same number of hotties as in the newsletter at one time, but each time I have been there, there have been a few. I think the newsletter is from the bikini show, at that show, there will be more hotties at one time than normal.

Captains quarters overrated. If you are looking to live large rent the penthouse see-6. That was my spot and now I like the A level rooms especially on bikini contest weekends.

I am led to believe that I need to be more concerned about safety in the DR.DR is extremely safe for a Third World country. I moved here (Puerto Plata) aged 68 (I am now 81 and virtually retired from mongering). I never could fight, and at 68 I could no longer run. On another note, its my first time there in about 5-6 years and not much has changed with the staff and facilities but what has changed are the girls.
