My Lexus is 25 years old with 350,000 miles. I would rather spend time and money on traveling and investing than paying and waiting for a car to get fixed every week. My brother could not even open the trunk of his BMW without first buying a $400 battery from the dealer. The joke was on him.

You can buy a comparably equipped GMC or Chevrolet and you'll pay 10-20% more for the GMC. Same chassis, same body, same engine and transmission, assembled at the same factory by the same employees. Every single piece of each vehicle are manufactured by the same suppliers. The only differences are a few cosmetic items.

All the other car manufacturers, about the only thing unique to each brand are body panels, which are pressed in house. They make their own engines and transmissions, but all of the parts are made by outside suppliers. A built in the US Mercedes about 60% comes from the same manufacturers as any other car built in the US.

I hauled parts for Toyota for several years. Everywhere I picked up, except for Toyota transmission and engine plants, the docks were separated by manufacturer. All of them represented at every place.

Colombian Spanish is distinctly different than Mexican Spanish, Cuban Spanish, Costa Rican Spanish, Argentinian Spanish etc etc. Not only that, Medellin has its own "dichos" that will not make sense to you and won't translate on your Google translator. Your accent will stick out. Doesn't mean you can't communicate, just understand this: No one will think you are Colombian.

Here is a silly but true example. I met a couple of gentlemen from South Carolina the other day. We spoke for a bit. I could hardly understand anything they said. Their accent is so different from other parts of the country that it was a real challenge to understand. Same would be true for some people from Boston or Brooklyn.

3. If you think you're young and Latino and the girls are going to relate to you. You're delusional. A significant portion of the women in Colombia have their children in their mid to late teens. They live at home with their parents. Where is the father? He split the minute he heard she was pregnant. That is a very common story in Colombia. So why are they posting on FaceBook or other sites? Their parents tell them to earn some money to support the household. Minimum wage here is about 1 million COP monthly. Roughly the equivalent of $220. Rent, services, food, diapers. 1 million pesos doesn't get it done. They are thrilled to see some older ugly gringo that gives them 200 mil or 250 mil. They aren't trying to relate to you they are trying to relate to your wallet.

You might think you are going to find the most beautiful women in Colombia (and there a lot of them) and they are going to be so impressed that they are going to want to date you on your two week vacation (or whatever it is). Do you think those girls who are well educated and / or have jobs are going to want to date some foreigner who is visiting for a few weeks? If they are that exceptional in the looks department don't you think they already have a boyfriend? Do you think for a second that they don't have 2 or 3 other male friends who are waiting in line for the breakup?

Seriously dude, get over yourself. Also, parents want their daughters to date successful, educated accomplished men. Why? Because they will be good providers and aren't as likely to run and hide if they knock-up their little princess. You know what the mothers tell their daughters? "It is just as easy to fall in love with a rich man as it is a poor man. ".

For example, some Venezuelans will want or accept USD bcos that is now the most accepted stable currency in Venezuela. But this is not the case for Colombians living in Colombia.

If you're out with a girl you just met and she's constantly scratching at her crotch, like a dog with fleas, you might think that's not somewhere you want to stick your junk. It's an obvious sign. You end the date and go take a shower. If you're just chatting with a girl and she keeps asking questions like "do you carry around a lot of cash", or "will you wear all your jewelry and best watch when we meet", you might figure you're being set up to be robbed. Those are signals anyone would recognize. So crying after you get crabs and get ripped off for $20,000 won't get you much sympathy.

People with experience in Medellin recognize signs that others won't see. For example, if you're talking to a girl and you think you've agreed on a date the next day, she's not going to show, because she gave you a Colombian "no. " Colombians have a strong aversion to direct contradiction. When asked a question, they will seldom tell you "no. " Instead they'll give an ambiguous "yes", like "okay, message me in the morning. " Guess who won't be responding to your messages for a few days (when she'll have an excuse)?

That one is across everything. If you're negotiating a huge contract for a multinational corporation, you can spend months trying to get the meetings that you thought had already been agreed upon.

One which is limited to mongering is when a girl asks for payment in dollars. Colombians don't think in dollars. Very few of the girls will know the exchange rate, or do the math. You can easily prove that by asking her how much in pesos. She'll likely come back with a number 20-35% off of the exchange rate (either way).

So they aren't being "smart", or recognizing their own value. They're following a script. You would immediately recognize the script if you had encountered it before, or if she mentioned "your vehicle's extended warranty. " However, you're trying to apply your logic to Colombians, which is like trying to put gloves on a snake.

Now to #2, Stating the obvious. Stating the obvious is quite important, because what you think is obvious doesn't necessarily apply in other countries or other situations.

Here's an obvious example. If a girl tells you she wants to bring a friend, so you can enjoy both, many people believe they're going to have a threesome. However, whereas a threesome is a battle Royale free for all, with everyone involved with everyone, that's not what will happen. What will usually happen is you'll have a 2 on 1 tag team match. While 1 girl is with you, the other will be out of reach, completely uninvolved and uninterested. Then they'll switch. Usually the result is you'll have a session which wasn't worth the price you paid for 1 girl, and you had to pay double.

Don't assume you know the obvious. Ask questions and pay attention to the answers, especially the answers which you think are wrong.

This system is used for taxation and the calculation of economic burden for necessary services. For example, people living in an estrato 6 neighborhood pay more for electricity (per KwH) than people living in an estrato 2 neighborhood. It's not some arbitrary number, it's a government defined classification system.

Estrato 4 is a middle class neighborhood, made up of middle class families. Their schools and hospitals are better than those in an estrato 2 barrio. Do you understand it now? To determine anyone's economic estrato all you need to know is the address where they grew up. Do a search, locate the address and there's nothing subjective about it.

From my point of view it was almost a perfect situation.

1. I had a Colombian native as a guide and interpreter, every day, free of charge.

3. I didn't have to pay extra for a furnished apartment, pay 6 months in advance to rent an unfurnished apartment, or buy a bunch of furniture. Just a bed, desk and TV.

4. The occasional available apartment in the building would rent for 1. 9 million. My total expenditure for the apartment (utilities) over almost 10 months was less than 2 months rent.

5. Cooking for 2 is better than cooking for 1 and I enjoy cooking.

6. Who doesn't enjoy being around a nearly naked woman?

For most of the past 28 years I've driven trucks. During my 30's I was traveling all over the continental US, constantly. I averaged 10 days home per year. The approximate measurements of the trucks I've driven are 70' in length, 8. 5' in width and 13.5' in height with a loaded weight over 60,000#. Most housing areas and apartment complexes don't have parking for a truck of that size. Many areas have laws prohibiting entry by trucks, except for local deliveries.

Back then my days were filled with loading or unloading and driving with 10-14 hours off at night. Often my schedule would keep me in 1 city for a few days. At night I'd plug in and sign on, meeting people online and chatting them up. The rest was simple.

"You live in Austin? Wow, I'm going to be in Austin next week. " "Really? We should meet for coffee or something. " "Sounds great. I'll call you when I get parked. ".

Since it's impractical to take a truck into many places, I would park nearby, at a truckstop or in an industrial park (sometimes a shopping center) and make a call. Depending on distance and weather, I might walk a block or two (White Plains NY and Phoenix, AZ), park at the house (Chino Hills, CA and Lexington, Ky), or wait for the girl to pick me up. For half the period I was still married and everyone knew it.

Of course there are 2 requirements. First, you have to be able to meet and talk with women, without offering to pay them. Then you just need to convince them that fucking you is something they want to do. In my 30's that was the easiest part. It's obvious you can't handle the second part and it appears the first step has caused problems as well.
