I am thinking of going to GDL for quick, long weekend punting getaway.
But there is a lot in the news today about cartels and cartel violence, and I wanted to get people's opinion about safety for punters like us.
It is my first time to GDL, but I am not an inexperienced punter. So I know that, by nature, we sometimes roam in areas, and amongst people, that are a little... seedier. It's the nature of the hobby, and I try not to judge, but its true. And on top of that, there is a lot of anti-American sentiment abroad these days (I am an American). I can read general tourist travel advisories, but we are not general tourists.
People can pick your pocket, steal stuff from your room and even mug you. I am not asking about petty crime. I am talking about more organized and / or cartel-related crime. Having your drink drugged. Kidnapping. Running into cartel guys in a bad mood at a strip club. Visiting an estetica masculina that is run by a cartel guy. Being an innocent bystander in a shooting.
I do not and would not ever seek to acquire recreational drugs of any kind. I would just like to know if, roaming in the punting parts of the city, GDL has additional particular risks. I imagine that there is definitely a theoretical risk. But is it a significant risk worthy of consideration?
Because if so, I can always pick another destination. But I have visited Mexico in places other than Tijuana, like PV, Tulum and Oaxaca. I love the sights, food and music. But I have never visited a true city, and would like to.
I know that I might get hammered for asking this, but take it easy guys. I am asking honestly, and I am not a newb.
Thanks in advance! It's safer than democrat run cities in the US. I've been living here for 4 years. Trust me you're much more likely to get robbed of 200 p by a cop while driving than by a pickpocket.

Crime is bad all over and doesn't have a damn thing to do with Democratic blue or Republican red. What a bunch of bullshit! If martial law has been declared in Washington, DC then it ought to be declared here in this town as well. I have been and lived all over the United States in both "blue states" and "red states" and know from my lived experience that not a single part of this country is exempt from crime, with hard statistics showing that gun violence is actually worse in red states versus the blue.

For 2022 gun deaths per 100 k residents was 8.6 in CA. Vs. 15.3 in TX or about 80% higher in TX. I thought comparing two large red and blue states with very different laws and attitudes towards guns might be a better comparison than two cities.

So how many of those gun deaths in Texas were in the large cities?

It's true.WTF is a red city? Aren't most major cities even in red states blue?
WTF is a red city? Aren't most major cities even in red states blue? Not all large cities are "blue cities". And not only that, you have to take into account the suburban areas around large cities that comprise the entire metro area. Those often tend to be more conservative. Here's something that addresses this. The conclusion is a mixed picture without any definitive evidence or proof that crime is worse in red or blue controlled urban areas. That's what I said, with an exception for gun violence. That's worse in "red country", and stats year after year prove it.

Trust me you're much more likely to get robbed of 200 p by a cop while driving than by a pickpocket.GDL has an annual homicide rate from what I'm seeing of 21.75 killings per 100,000 population, or higher. I bet it may be significantly higher because people who disappear don't get counted, and that happens frequently in Jalisco. Anyway there are 10 cities in the USA according to Wikipedia with homicide rates higher than 21.75, and yes, all except one have Democrat mayors.
I'd feel reasonably safe anytime of the day or night around, say, Plaza Andares. Also driving (but not walking) at night to motels and strip clubs. And during the daytime going to the tourist sites and estticas. I wouldn't wander around at night looking for street walkers. And I'd exercise caution just like in any other large city in Latin America, and in some cities in the USA.
And as to the pickpockets, its always a good idea only to carry with you what you wouldnt mind losing. Yeah there are European cities with very little violent crime where youre a lot more likely to be pickpocketed than GDL.

The homicide rate per 100,000 from guns is about 4 in California and 6 in Texas according to ChatGPT. Your numbers include suicides. Maybe the difference is that Texans kill themselves with handguns while Californians are more creative.

WTF is a red city? Aren't most major cities even in red states blue?Somewhere in ISG is a thread dedicated to political discussion. I never visit it and I don't want you to impose your politics on me here. Please let's stay on topic and let's all report to Admin the argumentative posts.
