Hello,
I seem to remember a web site a looked at a few months ago, and it had local reviews of all facets of the GDP in Rio. The site was in Portuguese, and it was possible with limited language skills to pick up some info. Does anyone know of this/these site(s).
I am moving to Rio full time next week, so if any local members would be willing to share some tips and info, the cold beer is on me. I will be living in Botafogo to start. I hear this is a nice area, but is there a local club or terma in Botafogo that would provide interesting scenery, be a good place to gather local knowledge or just be a nice place to have a drink and dinner.
Escort agencies. Any comments on Scortshow or Karla Model's and the $R100 for two hours offer? Sounds like a good offer.
Look forward to meeting a few members in Rio soon. I will be checked in and availaible on about the 3rd of Sept or after.
Obrigado,

There are a lot of young girls hanging around bus stops on the main road, not too many good looking ones. They are mostly very dark, thin and haggard.
I was trying to pick up a young, fair-skin girl near the internet cafe. She turned out to be from France with a major atittude.
You should ask the local cabbies. They would know local bordellos anywhere in the world. With the low level of beauty of the girls walking the streets in Buzios, I would not have high hope for good talents.
Foz do Iquacu OTH has a lot of fine talents and a lot of willing local nonpros. I had the best times in Brazil in Foz.
Yeah, Buzios is strictly BYOG.
Danielson, ever think that you can't find any monger info. on Buzios because THERE IS NO MONGER ACTION THERE...
I was in Buzios one night in a bar, the big one on the corner of Bridgette Bardot orla, its open air type with live music, you can't miss it but I don't remember the name. I was talking and dancing with a woman who worked in a beauty salon in Buzios, she pointed out 3 women sitting at the bar who she told me are working girls and another woman asked me to go to her house but unfortunately I already had a girl I met in Rio and I was tempted to dump her for this woman, looking back I should have.
If you just want to go there and check the place out go ahead but don't expect a big scene like Rio but everything is possible. If you go in season there will be many tourists there from all over the world and many women. But yes it is primarily a place for couples.

I'm headed to Rio (Oct 20-30). I was wondering if anyone who is planning to be there during this time wouldnt mind helping a Rookie along for his first tour. I plan on staying Near the Ipanema and Copabana border. I havent reserved a spot yet so Im open for suggestions. But I'm definitely getting an apartmen, that seems to be the way to go.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps this has been discussed before, but I recently got my Brazilian visa for my visit next week. I had thought that they usually issued 5 year visas, with first use within 90 days.
There was a discussion about it on flyertalk.com, so I checked my visa and found that it's only for 90 days. The agency I got it through said that's all that available now. If you have to get a new one every 90 days that seems pretty obtuse. For those mongers going down multiple times, it's gotta suck shelling out $110 or more every time when your old visa expires. Anyone have any details on this, or is it just BS from the visa agency?
It is quite possible that the 90 day visa was legit. My first visa was 5 years, then 3 years, then 1 year. Now I have a 2 year, but only because I hired an agency. These were business visas, and I work for a prominent International company.
I am now married to a Brazilian and getting a permanent resident visa is taking up a lot of time and energy.
So.. I belive this more has to do with politics and revenue. USA is making it very hard for Brazilians, so they reciprocate. We also charge a fortune for them to get a visa.
My wife was first given a 6 month visa, and was promised a 5 year visa if she was good and showed she could come and go. In the 6 months, we traveled to USA 3 times, and to Europe and other countries. She went to get her visa renewed and they denied it. I was very irritated and finally got the name of the head of the US consulate and did get her a 5 year.
Sorry to vent, stuck in tons of other paperwork getting her a green card.
so.. it depends.. and again, it is not ab-normal. It is irritating to say the least.
It is at is the discretion of the consulate officer to give a 90 days or a 5 years visa. Such has been the case for at least the past 10 years. Whereas, the 90 days visa was a rarity 10 years ago, it is more prevalent now. I am told this is to discourage mongers. Sometimes the Visas are being refused also. 5 years visa are still available, it's the luck of the draw, I guess.

I just returned from Brazil, and they only gave me a 90 day Visa as well. I think it is standard now. It cost me $180 total, including the handling fees to the Visa agency in Houston (the nearest Brazilian Consolate).

From what I'm hearing on Flyertalk.com it's arbitrary. If you look like a Biz traveller, you'll get the 5 year. One guy reported walking into the SF consulate yesterday and getting a 5 year.
I paid $110, $39 (agency fee) and $6 s/h. Not great, but I'd hate to have to pay it again and again.
Some places like Indonesia, you pay $25 for a on the spot visa that's good for 30 days. At least you don't have to send it in or such, and it's not $150!
Two cents worth...
When I got my last visa in June it was a 30 day/multi entry for periods up to 90 days. My visa prior to that was a 5 year. The agency mentioned that I had a number of stamps for Brazil (about 25 +/-) and thought perhaps I got the short term visa because the consulate figured why not have the guy pay if he is going to visit so often. At $164 a whack it sucks. I'm getting another visa next week and will report the results....
RxHammer
PS The agency has no say in the "type" of visa granted, they just submit the application and the consulate makes the decision.....
Also, the same week I got my short term visa I had 2 friends renew and they got 5 year visas. The difference being they used they original visas for only 4 trips vs. my 25+ trips. So....

My understanding is that you must have a Brazilian address on your visa application to receive the 5 year visa. If you dont have an address you get the 90 day. Maybe give the address of some Posada next time. I used the address of my friends home.
I used Access Brazil in Houston to get my work visa (Type 2). They did help with the wording and telling me what to put in the letter. They said that the consulate was more favorable to short term (less than 7 day) trips, so we worded that way. I did get a 2 year one then. I am not connected with Access Brazil, but they seemed to have connections and know what is going on.. It was expensive to hire them, I think it was about $200.
This is a pain in the butt for sure. I have talked to other flyers and it does seem arbitrary, wait. Maybe it seems that if you travel there a lot, that they give you a shorter team (more $$ for them). I travel there every month, so have so many stamps they probably see $$ when the open the pp.
Good luck. If anyone is getting a Type 2 business visa, I am happy to share the letter we used Just PM me.
RX-
They just did the same BS too me also. A 90 day visa. WTF? That is BS! I also have several Brazil stamps in my passport....guess they figure we will pay it....
There was a very good discussion about this topic on another board. The guy who brought this issue got a 90-day visa from the Consulate in Houston (which is notorious in giving out a 90-day visa) was told by a consulate employee that he can only give out 90-day visa from now on. Other people on the board have join in and said that Brazilian consulate in other US cities are still giving out a 5-year visa. A few guys said that they just got their visa and it was for 5 years. It sounds like it is probably up to the discretion of the consulate employees.
Sounds to me like you guys in the good ol' state of Texas are getting hammered! I would like to hear from other guys from other states on this matter. Brazilians are not to keen on our Commander N Chief. Might have something to do with it. Also, I believe most of the guys involved in the boatride incident, were from Texas. Something to think about.
One more thing worth noting. In the pass (90) days 37 Americans have been arrested in Rio. I would venture to say that is more than in the last 5 years.Too many guys are going down and basically yelling "look at me, look at me." Brazilians are noticing them and the results are not good.

Visa I got: 90 Day tourist visa
I got F__Ked. Didn't have energy to try to get money back from visarite.
PS - Got to Brazil and I thought I had a business visa. (I never read it) Put on form business. Visa said tourist. Almost didn't get in. Had to BS my way around this saying I didn't know. Never mark the wrong box on the form in airplane!!!!!!
I am now about halfway through my second 5-year visa. I wasn't even aware that there was such a thing as a 90-day visa until I read it on this site.
It seems to me that the best thing would be to go directly to the Brazilian consulate with your application, passport, photos, and money, and not go through a visa service. That way you can ask the official directly for a 5-year visa. I got both my 5-year visas from the LA consulate be going there in person. Now I no longer live there and would have to travel a few hundred miles to the nearest consulate. However, it seems to me that this would be far cheaper than paying the visa service, then having to go back and get another visa each time you want to return. If they ask me why I want a 5-year visa, I'll tell them I have a Brazilian girl friend, or that I have close friends in Brazil.

I just went to the NYC consulate on Friday with my application in person. First time applying for Brazilian visa. I'll pick up my passport on Monday and report back Monday evening.
Really simple to do it in person. About 15 min wait before my number was called. Handed in all my docs and off I go.
Lorenzo-
I did go directly through the Brazil Counsulate in Houston. Guess I will be going back for my next trip.
Went directly to (by mail) Miami consulate for all the southern states - wrote on application "Request 5 year Visa". Did the trick, no problems. Got the 5 year $110.
You might have to specify in bold letters and do direct to the consulate to get your five year on.

In the early 80's thats all the consulates gave for a visa was 90 days. I was going to the NY consulate 4 times a year and after a couple of years I had to get extension pages in my passport because all the pages were filled up with visas and stamps.
Lets face it most normal tourists wouldn't mind as they may go to Brasil just once on their 90 day visa in their whole life. Most tourists do the Rio/Iguazza/Bahia/Manaus tour and then that is it, they never go back. When they see your passport has maybe up to 5 or 6 trips a year to Rio or SP then they know why you are going and I think the general feeling is that they are looking to limit this type of tourist.
As a previous poster has mentioned that this could be linked to the boat incident from the tourists who were from Texas and this could be a big part of it along with the fact that they may be looking to cash in on Rio's new found fame from the MTV crowd.
It's quite possible that you may have a better chance of getting a 5 year visa if you go in person so that they can get a look at you because they do interview you about your intentions in Rio as they did me last time I went and I got the impression that the interviewer knew why I was going by the questions and his responses to me.
If this continues then we will have to factor in this additional cost to the whole experience, can't fight City Hall.

I got my visa one year ago.
I understand that the visitors visa I got was a 90-day visa, good for 90-days per year, for 5 years.
But to make sure, give them a call or look it up on their website. This isn't the proper place to get reliable info on visas.
O.D.
I belive that the various consulate websites will not tell you how long the visa is for.
A visa that has a 5 year exparation is getting more and more rare, why? we can only speculate.
The 4 visas I have had all are for 90 days, up to 180 days per year, first entry must be within 90 days, then have an exparation date. The exparation date is what everyone is concerned about, the newer ones expire 90 days from date of issue. This is the pain..
My opinion is that the folks on this forum more than likely have some good experience to relate to others trying to get a visa that does not expire quickly.

I got a 5 year visa last year. It is completely up to the consulate. I asked for a 5 year one when I applied but the worker said it was up to the consulate general. She did repeat that I'm not supposed to work on a tourist visa about 5 times. So I fully expected to get a 90 day visa but was happy when a 5 year one showed up.
I would think the only reason it is hard for Americans to get a 5 year Visa is the fact that the USA makes it dificult for Brasilians to get a visa for a visit to the US. Most Euro passports do not require a visa at all to go to Brasil. It is great to just arrive and come and go as one pleases without visa bullshit.
Solely, the discretion of the visa officer.
Over the past 10 years; got a 5 year visa, upon expiration got multiple 90 day visas, got refused a visa once ("Needs approval from Brasilia, it will take too long, will not receive answer in time for your trip") but the next week a different consular approved a 30 day visa, and now I have a 5 year visa again, though I have only used it once. Go figure!
I always go personally, and here is my experience. Male consulars were easy, no questions asked. Young female consulars asked many questions but eventually granted, mostly short term, visas. Older female consular conducted an inqusition and politely sent me on my way without one.
I received a 5 year tourist visa in May this year without specifically asking. This was from Chicago consulate. Only ***** I have is that they sent it to me a day late and I had to delay my flight a day.
The visa is good for multiple entries with a max of 180 days per year. I wish I was able to stay that long. LOL
I got a 5 year visa from the NYC consulate this last Monday (08/29/2005). I wrote on the 'other' section that I requested a 5 year visa as I looked forward to going back in the near future.
Dropped the application off the Friday before and got it the following Monday. Very quick and painless.
Question...
I'm going to buy a cell phone in the States for a friend in Rio. I believe an unlocked, tri- or quad band GSM phone will do the trick, right ????
Also, after the phone is in Rio do you have to run on SIM card purchased time or can it be registered with TIM (or other service provider) like a regular service plan you'd enroll in here in the States ???? As you can tell I'm not too cell phone savy (lol)......
My new Visa should be approved early next week. I will report the results then....
Thanks in advance,

According to www.gsmworld.com. Brazil is mostly 1800mhz with some 900mhz. So a tri or quad should work. A quad would be better since tris are mostly just 1800mhz. Make sure it's unlocked.
As for where to buy a SIM with minutes. I welcome recommendations for that as well since I need to get a SIM too.

Remember that most Sim cards need a registration before they actually work. Only pre-paid available, unless you have a permanent address, CPF and some bills to proof your residence.

If you have any personal experience with Brazilian airlines which airline do you think is better, Gol or Varig?
I can't buy from Gol until I get to Brazil since they only accept Amex. I can buy Varig from here. There's a very small price differential.
Thanks,
Sphere
If the price is pretty close I would go with Varig. They tend to be more dependable and they definitely make less stops. Also, you can get it taken care of before you get to Brazil.
I personally prefer Gol because the planes are virtually brand new. The are both OK airlines, much better than South American airlines of past, that used to fall out of the sky with great regularity.
What is the best way to exchange American dollars for Reals right now? Can anyone who is in Rio/SP now or just got back tell me which method is giving the best exchange rate and where to go for it? Also what were the rates you were seeing on certain dates? Does anyone know more information about a jewelry store in Rio that gives a very good exchange rate?
Thanks

I got a 5 year visa at the Chicago consulate last year. I did not even ask for 5 years, not being aware of the 90 day thing that I've been reading about. Going to the consulate with the paperwork, passport and fee in hand was easy and very quick way to get the visa.
I have been to Rio several times and have stayed at the Hotel Arporador Inn in Impanema, never has been a problem to bring a girl back. Is the hotel still girl friendly?

well my last 2 visas were for 5 years but I think the concern is about recently that this is developing.

I'm gonna add my two cents. I didn't know that there was a 5 year visa.I'll be in Argentina Sept 11 through the 23rd with a quick side trip to Iguazu Falls. Sent my application through a visa processing service in San Francisco and got 5 years. Great!
It appears that in some regions visas are being processed differently. Moreover, your application must be sent to the consulate that represents your area (i.e. you live in NY your application can't be processed in San Francisco).
Hope that helps.

My suggestion is to use your ATM card. Look at the back of your card for bank network such as Cirrus etc. and look for ATMs with those network logos. Bank of Brazil ATMs cover most of these networks. I also use ABN Amro. You may want to check what service fee your personal bank will charge for each withdrawl. Mine is $1.50. I tend to load up on cash at the airport before I get my taxi. The last rate I got was about BRL2.40, about 2 weeks ago. In addition to ATM, I recommend taking backup money. Cash, traveler checks, something other than your card. But you should get a good rate of exhange through your ATM/bank. I found that you some times have to fiddle awhile with ATM machines in Brazil to get them to work, or sometimes they are out of operation, but a little patience pays off in terms of convenience and good exchange rate. It is of course a good idea to watch your back and make sure your cash is put away promptly.

my experience:
i've only used Citibank and Banco do Brazil ATM's:
whatever the currect exchange rate, the Citibank ATM's give 3 cents less. it does NOT tell you what the rate is while performing the transaction. you have to get the printed receipt. today (9/4/05) it was R2.32
Banco do Brazil ATM's do NOT tell you what rate it is exchanging the money. Nor is it on the printed reciept.
The dollar is dropping daily!! :(
Cash will get you a better rate at the cambios. but ya gotta shop around for the best rate.
for current exchange rates visit:

i return to Rio wed. :)

ATMs are more reliable. Shopping around for the "best rate" is a waste of time. ATMS generally give you the current exchange rate. Someone recently said ATMS give you 3 cents less but I think that is not correct. In my experience ATMS have always given the CURRENT exhange rate which fluctuates ALL DAY LONG! So I have no idea how somebody can tell if a machine gave them 3 cents less unless the person was somehow monitoring the exchange rate at the second that they hit the withdrawal button.
Besides what is 3 cents versus reliability anyway.
My bank charges me a $1 withdrawal fee and that is it when I am in Rio. I go to Citibank but I use my Federal Credit Union account. As noted Banco de Brasil does not print exchange rate on its receipts but I immediately go to the internet shop to check my account and have noticed they it is always around the posted official exchange rate.
If you just happen upon a cambio that gives a good rate use it that time. But you can rely on cambios. When the dollar is stronger again, cambios will adjust their rates, meanwhile ATMS will continue to give the CURRENT rate.
When I hear people say cambios are better than banks it makes me wonder. That is like saying you would rather take out a loan with a bookie or loan shark rather than an official bank.
Also some of you seem to not understand what an exchange rate is. Cambios can set their rates however they want, I assume. But ATMS can not adjust their exxhange rate. The machines do not have minds. These are international machines. Now you can have fees added but usually you should know of these fees beforehand. I know of no way that banks can provide various exchange rates via their ATMS. If they could then there would be NO NEED for an official exchange rate.
I think some people tend to think of Brazil as a playground rather than a serious country. Yes, we go there to have fun, but they are a resepcted nation, too. To imply that their banks would be less reliable than cambios is disrespectful. I mean would any American tell a visitor to go to a pawn shop rather than a bank to exchange money.
TJ
I don't understand the prejudice some have for cambios vs. ATM's. The ATM's give a bank currency exchange rate, it is not the same rate that you see on the internet currency exchange rates. That rate is the rate for large transactions between international banks and governments. The ATM rate is generally about 2% worse. Plus, there is generally at least one service charge added on. It varies from $1.50 to $3.00. Note, that is a 1/2 to 1 percent additional fee. Depending on your bank, you could get two added fees, one from the owner of the ATM, and another from your bank for using it. That being said, the ATM's aren't bad, aren't dishonest and are rather convenient (unless out of bills, or a long line...)
Now, HELP will normally exchange $100-$300 at a rate of about 5-6 real better per $100 usd than the atm rate. If I am stopping in to HELP, I will always convert enought for the next day, right as you first enter. So when the ATM is paying 244 real for $100, HELP is about R$250. Add in the average ATM service fee of $2.00 and you come out about 10R ahead. Not a big deal, it is only $4.00 USD. But why not!!! And there are very reliable cambios, such as in some very upscale jewelery stores that give about the same rates.
Now, I have nothing against the ATM's. In fact, I obtained an account at Citibank in the US, so I don't have to pay the service fee when I use the ATM in Rio (near Blockbuster Video). But the rate that you get in the exchange is still 2-3 % less than you would get at some cambios or HELP. If you don't believe me, call your bank, get the foreign currency exchange department (your bank might not have one and will refer you to the international bank that does their exchanges for them), and ask what rate you would get if the transaction were done that day, and compare to the online rates.
As for the comment about exchanging at a pawn shop: If I knew a pawnshop in the U.S. that would exchange foreign currency at a rate better than the banks, and was knew that it was honest, I would certainly recommend it to people visiting, instead of the banks. (Just try changing foreign currency at a US bank some time and you will have a real shock at to service fees, etc. Try changing your unused Real back for a jaw dropper, upon return to the US. I expect you will leave them with your passport for your next trip after you see what a lousy rate you get.)
Finally, how can the cambio's beat the bank rate? There is always a differential between the buy and sell rate in any exchange done at a bank (or any market, for that matter). That differential is called the spread. Many businesses in Rio do business in the US or Europe, and they use dollars or Euros for those transactions. Especially when they travel abroad. So rather than pay the bank "Buy rate" they buy directly from you, giving you a better rate than the bank "sell rate". They are cutting out the middleman, the bank in this case, and you can both share in the more efficient transaction.
Finally, whatever you do, don't trade any money at the airports in the US! The rate at those little booths set up in the international terminals is about 10% worse than the worst rate that you will get in Rio. And often, there are service fees on top of that. Even negotiatinig with the "shills" hawking cab rides at the curb will get you a better rate than those booths.
Finally, I have a degree in economics, and I trade regularly in foreign currency futures and I have done business overseas with wire transfers - sometimes using off shore locations to convert money to get the best rates. Basede upon this, I am pretty confident that this advice is on target: Best rate, $100 USD bills, newer, exchanged at HELP or other upscale Cambios, next is ATM...then credit cards, and worst (except at locations that are posting a great rate) is using US dollars at hotels or restaurants.
Hope I haven't offended anyone here with this diatribe. And I do occassionally use the ATM on the way to Luomo. I never exchanged there...I read the post about their rate and will try it and report back.
PS: You will also discover that there is a currency exchange fee built in to your credit card when you use it in a foreign country. It is in the small print that no one ever reads. Rate isn't as good as you think!
I agree with everything TJ Fannatic said, although I think it's important to point out that the Citibank ATMs do charge you a 6 reais "conveniance fee", and that's on top of the $1-1.50 fee that your own bank charges. So in reality if you are taking out R1000, you really only are getting R994 at Citibank. I personally think this extra fee is BS, just another way for Citibank to make money. Because of this I try to never use Citibank ATMs, and go to HSBC instead.
Also, every now and then I see tourists using the ATMs, and after they see the exchange rate they got, get mad at the ATMs, saying how it ripped them off. As I write this, the current exchange rate is 2.33 reais to the dollar. It is not the ATMs fault that the dollar is weak, it just gives whatever the current rate is. If you don't like that, either learn to live with it, or monger in another country, where the dollar is stronger.

This isn't quite true. You can have your visa processed anywhere in the US using an agency (which is what I did). If you're going to do it in person, then yes, you need to be in the right area for the consulate.

Just remember that many clubs may change dollars at a better rate. I got 2.45 at Help last night and had gotten 2.40 from my rental agent. Don't expect above average rates, but ask and you might be surprised.

For what it is worth.
When I go to Brazil, I get cash at an ATM using a USAA Mastercard (CIRRUS Network). While a few ATM's charge a fee (such as at the airport), most do not. Also, the USAA credit card charges no fee for a cash advance. To make matters even cheaper, I "preload" my USAA credit card by sending them a check for several thousand dollars just before my trip. That way, I have a positive balance and pay no interest for the cash advance. When I get home, I usually still have a positive balance but then just spend it down to zero with everyday credit card purchases. Finally, I always call my credit card companies and tell them the dates of my travel BEFORE I go. This helps ensure that my card is accepted while I am traveling and not afterward. (I once found that my credit card number - not the card itself - was stolen while I was in Brazil. The number was sent to Rio and several thousand dollars in charges were run up in a matter of days. Fortunately, it happened toward the end of my trip and my trip did not include Rio so I was able to easily identify which charges were not mine. I reported the fraud promptly and, except for the hassle of trying to sort out which charges were mine, it cost me nothing.)
Summary:
1) USAA Credit Card (MasterCard/Cirrus) charges no cash advance fee.
2) Preloading the credit card avoids all interest charges.
3) Most ATM's charge no fee. Avoid/boycott those that do!
4) Notify credit card company of your travel dates before you go.
5) Check your recent transactions/activity on-line to catch fraud early.
I use Bradesco's ATMs just because all their machines accept Cirrus cards in comparison with Banco do Brasil where you actually have to look for few selected machines that take american cards. Plus there seems to be Bradesco banks just around any hole in that country.
I don't trust cambios anymore, their rates are usually set for them to make profit off of you, and atms save me the hassle of carrying large amounts of money around.
Thanks for all the responses about exchanging money. The thing that I've noticed in other countries is that every bank has their own exchange rate with different amounts of profit margin. So if the official rate was 1 dollar=2.5 other money, some banks gave 2.45 others gave 2.46 and usually one gave something like 2.49 and you would have to call around and ask what their at that moment rates are to compare. So what you guys are saying is that Brazil banks aren't like that but cambios are, correct? After doing a search on this forum I found that some people used a jewelry store by Ave. Atlantica and Princess Isabela and another one by the name of Ben and Bros. Which one are people getting the best rates from and how much better are the rates? Any tips on how to get better rates from the cambios?
Thanks again.
Guys,
I got a call last Friday from the Brazilian embassy in Washington. They ask me to have my employeer fax a document to the embassy stating that I am not going to conduct any business in Brazil on their behalf. This is getting rediculous !! My company has 200,000 employees. I doubt seriously that they even know who the hell I am much less where and what I do on my vacation !!

The last guy I heard have this asked was actually self employed, had to get one of his employEES to write the letter on his behalf, pretty funny. Having said that , when he did produce the letter I don't think it was looked at to hard. Brasilians love those little paper documents..........
I have not been "playing" in Brasil since October 2004. Found a good Brasilian girl and married and did not go to Brasil for "play" except visiting with her family. From time to time, I lurk around the Brasil site just to check out how things are and reminicize the good old days. Seems like a lot of Senior Members I used to see on this board have stopped posting with the exception of J Wadd and Nipu still going strong (all the power to them). I thought I am an old timer (since 1997) but in fact, there were many more seasoned travellers before me whom I learned from. I am curious as to where all the seasoned travellers been to? They retired from the scene like me? Or they just simply stopped postings?
Definitely open up a checking account at HSBC bank. There is a HSBC bank at every street corner in south America, not just Brasil. Using your HSBC ATM card is totally free of any fees and you can withdraw up to R1000 per day. As for credit card, use the card ONLY at reputable business outfits. Avoid using it at restaurant or Termas as your number may be stolen and use for other frauds. I have had one experience like this.
I'm going to Brazil for the first time (Rio/SP), and I'm seeing conflicting advice on what if any immunizations are needed. Some places say nothing is needed other than what everyone gets as a child in the US (like mumps) while other sites say you need hepatitis A and/or B, typhoid, etc. What does everyone recommend?
Thanks
Johan.
It is very-very difficult to open an account at any Brasilian based bank.
Either local or foreign.
I tried almost all of them with no joy.
You must have a permanent residence card in order for them to open an account for you. It is an absolute must.
I always use HSBC ATM's to withdraw cash from my european account.
To my opinion they give a good rate, they are all over Brasil and every branch has at least one Cirrus machine. Banco do Brasil don't.

Does anyone know whether someone can renew the entry visa to Brasil by crossing the border to Argentina at the Foz do Iguasu (and maybe by staying overnight there) ?
I have never been there and by doing this I want to avoid a trip to Buenos Aires in order to extend my stay in Brasil for another month or so.
I know that someone can get a second three month stay by applying for that to the immigrasion but I want to avoid that process this time.
Thanks

Does anyone know if a Termas named Dazenove 1-2-3 is still opened? I haven't been to Rio for a few years, but it was always top notch. All the girls wore hot, tight, striped leotards and cfm's. It was located near the Rio Sul Mall, heading away from Copa Beach, at the other end of the tunnel?

RxHammerHad same thing happen to me. If you are not comfortable asking your work and are a risk taker - just fake it. Write your own letter on comapny letter head and sign some ficticious name. In fact you can probably use a fake company if you wanted (unless you told them where you work already).
In my case I asked the HR secretary to write me the letter (little old lady). The nice lady that she was, she wrote it and immediatly brought it over to my desk and I wasn't there. Well she gave it to my neighbor since she wanted to make sure i got it. I then got the 3rd degree. "wow, you're going to Brail. Who are you going with, what are you going to do there?"
Side note: I go to Toronto alot of weekends and they aways ask for a comapny name when you rent a car - even when it is just for vaction.
You do not need to be a Brasil resident to open up a HSBC account in Brasil. In fact, you don't need to deal with HSBC Brasil. Reason is; you can do it here in the US (I assume you are US resident). If you live in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles or even Seattle, just go into any of the HSBC branches and open up a free checking account (ATM, Master Card, Debit cards will also be made available to you for free if you request). If however, you live outside the area I listed, you can go to
http://www.hsbcusa.com/personal
Use this link to open a free checking account via internet or call the 800 number and they will open up for you. All for free and it takes about 2-4 weeks for the paper to work out (as you need to send in your passport or proof of ID for homeland security issues). I use primarily HSBC bank here in the US even my city does not have a single branch to serve the retail customers. (see reasons below).
When I go to Brasil or anywhere in S.America. I use my HSBC card like a locals without special fees and get the best exchange rate (bulk rate). On the west coast (i.e. MT, ID, WA, OR, CA, NM, CO, UT, AZ, NV), except for CA, there is no HSBC bank, but no problem. HSBC has an alliance with Well Fargo and I can use the Wells Fargo ATM machines in these 10 western states for free, just like using any HSBC. So, extremely convenient both inside and outside of USA.
Also, you get internet banking from this checking account for free and you can manage your money remote easy and fast.
I guess many of us know that HSBC is also the world's 5th largest bank by assets and if you open up an account with HSBC USA, your account is insured up to $100,000 per account by FDIC.
One downside I have to disclose is. Since you only have an ATM card to access cash. You are subject to two limitation (and I provide solutions too).
1. R1000- per day withdrawal limit. What if you meet that special someone in Termas and wanted to surrender your whole asset to her to show your love. Problema!! :). You can only get R1000- max per day. Also, the R1000 kicks in for the weekend. In Brasil's banking, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, constitute ONE weekend day. So, if you withdrew R1000- on Saturday, then you won't be able to get more money until the following Tuesday. Last but not the least, in Brasil, any time after 10pm, all ATM machines only allows you to withdraw max R100- irrespective of your total withdrawal limit. So, all the lovers who met their long lost love at Termas or HELP need to get their money EARLY else your new found girlfriend would feel that you ain't show the true love to her. :P (The Fix: Open up to SECOND account and get a second ATM card.
2. What if you lost your ATM card? See solution set listed in #1.
Everything is right on. Except one more.
HSBC is not a Brasil based bank. The bank started in Hong Kong way back in 1865. HSBC stands for HongKong & Shanghai Banking Corporation. The reason Shanghai was added into the mix was after 1949 when communist overtook China, a lot of refugees from Shanghai moved to HongKong and their capital infusion enhanced the bank's position. Add in the fact that, the bank, despite being a commericial bank, also served as the central bank for Hong Kong (similar to US' Federal Reserve). So, those of you visiting HongKong pre 1997 would remember that most of Hong Kong's currency has the HSBC logo on it. After United Kingdom returned Hong Kong to China, the bank minimized its image and root of Hong Kong and Shanghai thus name became HSBC and also moved its administrative head office to London. However, most of HSBC's research, investment and corporate admininstration is still out of HSBC main office in Hong Kong (Central aka Victoria). Based on their last annual report 10K, significant percentage of HSBC's revenue is coming from Asia Pacific area.
That is a great piece of info.
I was asked the same question if I attempted to seek employment in Brasil (as my passport is filled with entry/exit stamps from Brasil as I go there three or four times a year). I told them I was just visiting with my girlfriend whom I love dearly. The woman smiled and did not ask for more question. I lied, I really meant girlfriendssssssss. :) and of course, I love them ALL. Most of them are at Help or Termas eager anticipating my visit. LOL
Question regarding vaccination. If you are on the go and no time to take the vaccination, don't worry. Brasil's health/hygene standard, especially in Rio and SP are top notch. Stick with bottled water, that's all you need. If you really want 100% assured, may be you want to do Hep A,B and C but if you you on the go, you may not have time to take the shots since these vaccinations need time to kick in the effect. Generally, I would say, no worry at all.

Perkele,
Thank you very much.
This time I want to stay only a few weeks more than the three month permit.
I know that for the 90 days extension you can only apply once in every 365 days so I want to save it for the next time.
I was thinking of going to Iguasu for my first time and get a reentry to Brasil too if possible.

Thank you very much for your info.
I leave in Greece and I use my Greek ATM cards (2-3 of them) to get money from HSBC machines. They charge me about 5-6 Euros comission for every R1.000 transaction but still the final rate is better than the cambios and no need to curry cash around copacabana area. Too bloody dangerous.
If you think that by having a HSBC account abroad this comission is waved by using their machines in Brasil then I have no problem opening an account with them in Greece.
Are you sure about that?
I usually stay at Flamengo. I found it to be a little safer than copa and there is a HSBC branch next to my place thus minimising the risk.
I am aware of the weekend restrictions so I do my loading during weekdays.
Johan
No matter if the head office of HSBC is in Hong Gong.
The branches of Brasil have to follow Brasilian laws. Same applies for Citi and any other bank. That is what I called them Brasil based banks.
Thanks anyway
El Greco
I would check the rate your bank gives you. My experience has been the cambios give about R0.10 above the official rate which is what your bank will give you if they take no commision. When you add in the commision it is worse.
El Greco.
Don't know the policy of HSBC Greece. However, for the HSBC USA, indeed, they did not charge me any "surcharges" for using their ATMs in Brasil or anywhere in the world (I go to Canada a lot and HSBC is also big in Canada). Also, two years ago, I used the same ATM card in Monte Video and Buneos Aires, also no surcharge. Having said that, I must say I am ignorant of Greece HSBC. I think you may want to check with your bank in Greece.

Yes and No. Yes, sometimes, Cambio provides a better FX rate than banks or credit card. Not always though. In 1998, I remember when the "official exchange rate" was 2.8x at the banks, the Cambio gave US1= R3.15!! The reason is all market environment. Last year, 2004 Christmas, I noted that whereas the bank gave something like R2.7x per US$, the cambio gave R2.5x, so the cambio market is adjusting faster than the FX rate. This is what I usually do, I call ahead of time to the cambio before I leave for Brasil to get a feel how the exchange rate is. If it is better to carry US$, I plan ahead. If the rate is less than the official rate, then I use my ATM. By the way, it is nice to hear that the Cambios are giving better rate as Cambios are always more accurate to call the market than the FX. So, US$ is due for a rebound? :)
I just got back from Rio a couple days ago and these are the exchange rates I got:
2 cambio houses in Ipanema both exchange at R$ 2.40. 5 days later they were at R$2.35.
Citibank ATM on first day gave R$2.36 on the first day. 5 days later it was giving R$2.32
Help was exchanging R$2.45 every night I was there.
FYI,
Last January I was going to fly from Rio to Caracas and back. During check in at Varig they asked me for a yellow fever vaccination which I had not.
They explained to me that according to new rules with effect from 1/1/2005 I should have a vaccination not for Venezuela but for my reentry to Brasil from Venezuela.
They told me to go and get one at the other terminal which I did.
Very quick procedure. Be aware that they are closed for lunch brake for about to hours and they are only open untill early evening. Not 24 hours service.

Guys,
I’m going on my first trip to Rio this October, so I have a quick question: considering all the street crime, where do you hide your cash when you go to termas? I mean, a lot of you have 2 or sometimes 3 sessions per night, so you need several hundred reals. At the same time people say don’t carry too much cash on you. So my question is how do you do it?
Thanks!
Mv0928,
When you go to the termas L’uomo, Monte Carlo, Solarium, 4X4 you are given a robe, slippers\thongs and a wristband with your locker number on it and the key. You place all you clothing, belonging, etc in the locker. Your wristband is your debt card. All your drinks, girls & massage are charged to your locker number. They usually ask you to pay for the girl in cash\reals. R$120.00 per girl. The rest you can put on your credit\debt card. Your cash is left in your locker and where there is an attendant at all times. It is a a very safe place. All is paid for at the end of your visit. At Centaurus in Ipenama you paid up front.
Rio really is no different than any big city in the U.S. You don't see people being knocked over the head and robbed all day. Does it happen? Yes, but it is no different than any other big city. I went out this weekend to a club in Richmond, Ca. To be honest I feel safer in Rio and the women look much better. Ended up spending the night with a girl who tells me just before we get to her apartment that she is on her period. AHHHH! I also cracked my rim on the curb. Again, I should have just stayed my ass at home. LOL. Just use common sense and you will be fine.
If I'm going to the beach I would take maybe $R40-100. If I know I am going to the terma, then I would take R$200-300 and a credit card. Where do I keep the money? In my pocket. Shorts with multiple pockets are very good for stashing loot.

Funkignitor.. One person says he got robbed in 4x4 and you believe him? That was the first time anyone ever said they got robbed there in over 5 years.
I would tend NOT to believe that guy. He most likely did not remember what he had with him or he tried to pull a fast one on the managemant.

Mv0928 ... Rio is not anything like you may have heard. There are not 100's of people getting mugged on very street corner.. Shit, if it was anything like that no one would ever go. Just take normal precautions and you'll be OK..

I have never been robbed in any Terma and I have visited all of them and many times.
A few times in 4x4 my bill contained items that I did not consume. Most probably the girls that I gave my key to go and order the drinks got an extra drink for another girl or I was charged by mistake.
All the times management waived them immediatelly when I protested.
I am a familiar face to them after all and I chat sometimes with one of the owners.
In an other Terma girls might ask for a drink, especially energetico, after the session which they finally don't take protesting that they are going to have it later on.
Most probably they get the money instead when they check out.
Those were the only "robberies" that I ever had in a Terma.

Mv0928, there will be those who have had bad experiences with crime in Rio and there will be those who have not. I'm one who has not. I wouldn't be overly concerned about it. Just use common sense. Don't get $2000(USD) out of the ATM and then walk around with it in your hands waving it like a fan. But doing the same thing in LA or NYC will probably get it taken faster than in Rio. Rio to me feels safer than many parts of the United Staes. And unlike many who take taxis everywhere, I walk or take the bus or the metro. I explicitly go to neighborhoods outside of the toursity areas to check them out. I've found the people nothing less than friendly and courteous.

Vila Mimosa is not for the faint of heart. It is where the locals go to score. Cost is about $r20 for 20 minutes. It is sex mall in a run down area in the Central. On any given night there are between 200 to 500 women. It has been there for about 20 years. All shapes, ages, sizes and colors. There are a few gems. This is where most girls get started and if they stay too long in the programa, finish their's careers.
I have visited the place 3 times. I got with one girl who I knew from Copacabana. Since, one cat (J) who lives in Rio got beat within an inch of his life back in April, I don't know anyone who has dared to venture back.
If, someone has, please report.

From what I heard is go to Villa with someone be respectful dont start trouble, Dont get drunk, Dont make faces when hiddeous creatures approach you just smile and say nao obrigado. best thing to do is if you see a girl you like take her to your apt, hotel or motel.
You may want to think twice about bringing a girl back to your place. Management doesnt appreciate tourists taking girls out of their establishment. You are messing with their money!
Best to get her cell number and give her a ring one afternoon so she can come by and visit.

Ice T,
You should definitively go to Vila Mimosa. Judge the place for yourself. If you don't like it, just leave. For me Vila Mimosa is perfect. When I'm in Rio I´ll go there often three times a week.
- Quality: The average quality is low. But with more than a thousand pro's working there you should not have any problems to find at least a dozen women that will look really appealing. There are several gems to be found.
- Prices: 25 reais for 20-30 minutes!
- Rooms: Mostly small and dirty. There are some casas, charging 2 reais extra, with clean sheets and AC. A better option is to head for the nearby Motel, Canário. 1-2 hours will cost you 50 reais for the girl and 20 reais for the room. Nice rooms.
- Safety: Dress down, keep a low profile, bring a big smile and you'll be just fine in Vila Mimosa. Keep an extra eye open if you enter/leave the area by foot.
- Atmosphere: Loud, wild, very entertaining and lots of half-naked women running around showing of their goods. I love it.

Ice T,
No motels that I know of. VM is a gallery of many bars, which have tiny rooms upstairs over the bars where you have sex. For each client girls must give 5% to the owner of the bar, in exchange of what she gets protection and room rental. It's cheap, sleazy and smells pretty bad, but your nose will adjust. Some girls live on the premises. You can get the girls to come back to Copacabana. Best to speak Portuguese or go with someone who does and be decreet. I would not go alone but that's just me. Here's a couple of photos, which pretty much captures the scene.

There's so many spoiled piranhas with a attitude down at Copacabana cuz rich foreigners over paid 'em though they ain't all that necessary. That would a solution for the problem.
Many 6-7 chicks didn't take offers less than r100$ while I was thinking to have max r30$ go, though I had many 9 chicks r100$ and some cost even less than that.
Taking many chicks at one time is breaking that safety rule "keep low profile". Do you have any suggestions for that? Maybe just try to arrange an appointment right at the motel or some.

Very nicely done. I miss Rio! Glad to know there are motels near by.

Ronny Ron's pictures shows the outside of Vila Mimosa.
Here are two photos showing rooms.
First photo is a 5 reais room. Tiny and hot. No dirty sheets as there were no sheets at all.
Second photo from the nearby motel with clean sheets and some chocolate butt on the top.Not bad, Not bad at all dude! My idea is keep costs low so fuck she sheets though that's quite nasty shit man! ;D
There's hell a lot ugly hoes in Copa as well and not all the Help girls gems but dressed nice so what.
I liked that light brown diva de cholate, she's of the chain.
Now I'm positive that I'm gunna go there. ;D

Several chicks at the same time is no problem at Vila Mimosa. Just bring them to the motel (or make an appointment at your apartment in Copa). Tell them to come 2 minutes after you. Actually Miss "Black butt in motel room" wanted me to take her 3 cousins/sisters back to the motel as well. I was very tempted.
I dated several VM girls that sometimes brought their friends to my apartment. Sometimes without charging anything. Wonderful girls. Unfortunately they get wasted after a couple of months in VM.
Has anybody been at Lapas kicking nightlife? Some friends of mine told that's
the spot if you wanna hook up non pros. There's a lot nightclubs on it's two main streets. If anyone has some info about that place please share it with all of us. ;D

So they are willing to come all over Copa, do you need to pay some extra or pay maybe theyr buss pass or some? lol Well if they bring their friend and you fuck her and her friends too so I don't think there's any extra be paid. But I think it's correct to give a little some from all the effort. :D What you think?
These Mimosa chicks seem to be open for photo shooting or am I right? Many times chicks from Copa especially from Help tried alway charge more if there were pictures taken and that was really annoying.
Keepin' it real.

I've been to Mimosa a few times, but I've always taken care of business right there on the scene. As was mentioned, there are indeed quite a few gems to be found: 18 years old and new to the game. Incredible. It would be great to bring some of this action to somewhere that we wouldn't be limited to 25 minutes by some asshole banging on the door.
To have the girls return with you to a motel, do you solely approach the girl about this, or do you have to ask the dona? Also, would you be taking the girl during business hours (7pm-2am), or before/after her shift?
You wrote in your post that to bring a girl to the motel, it only costs 50 reais for one or two hours. No typo? Incredible.
Please give some insight on your technique. And BTW, that "diva de chocolate" picture of yours is outstanding.

For each client girls must give 5% to the owner of the bar, in exchange of what she gets protection and room rental.
Do you mean 50%? I´d guess it was a typo. I can´t think why a bar would take this little or providing a room, etc.
Is there a metro stop nearby, or what would be the nearest bus/metro to go there? It would seem against interests to spend 30R on a chica and pay $40R for a taxi there and back.
The Motel, Hotel Canário, is very close by. At the end of street with all the bars you turn left and you will see it on the right side. Before the bikers club-house.
You can take the girls to the motel at any time. I´ve only met one girl at VM that said she wasn´t allowed to go there. The other girls seemed very happy to go there. They always tell their colleagues where they are going so I guess it´s OK with the casa owner. I never asked any Dona about permission.
The girl get 50 reais. You get plenty of time for 2 sessions. Some even wanted to stay almost three hours. Resting, chit-chating and doing some extra action. It's great with a clean room and a shower afterwards.
I think just before 18.00 is a good time to arrive at VM. You sit down on the main street having a beer and see the night shift arriving. When a beauty arrives you pick her immediately. It's always nicer to be the first customer of the day.
A taxi to VM will cost you 20 reais. Instead you can take bus 455 Meier to Praca da Bandeira or the Metro. Metro is quicker, but the busstop is closer to VM.
When you meet a gem at VM you can make an arrangement to meet her in Copa, change phonenumbers etc. 50-70 reais is a reasonable price for spending some time in your apartment in Copa. No need for taxi money. The VM girls are bus-girls.
The VM girls seems to like photos. I always bring a small camera hidden in my underwear.
By the way when taking a girl upstairs in a bar the owner gets 5 reais and the girl 20 reais.
JC, I've heard a few times from locals that the area around Vila Mimosa is pretty dangerous. I would not advise anyone walk in from the bus stop, especially a first time visitor.
Be careful in the streets surrounding VM. Always arrive and leave by taxi.
There are some nearby metro stops. Central or Praca Onze on the Zona Sul line. Maracana or Sao Cristovao a little closer if you change to the other line. Maybe cruise out to Central on the metro and then take a short taxi ride. I'm as frugal as they come but nobody should compromise their safety to economise on a couple of dollars.
VM is one of those places you want to see out of curiosity. Once seen, not everyone wants to go back again. Now I don't expect five star and I'm used to travelling in poor countries. But even for me, the conditions there were "brochante" (makes your arousal go away instantly).
No doubt there are nice chicks to be had. I just didn't feel like staying long enough to find out.

Be VERY careful in Villa Mimosa... Bringing girls out of there is BIG trouble if the pimps find out. That is what happend to Jimmy. They kicked his ass so bad he had to return to the USA for medical treatment and has some perm. damage.

tough big, tough strong, tough rough, there's no reason to get any risk in VM
we all have a gringo face even if mediterranean or afroamerican and everybody there knows it
we monger for fun, people in VM is in that business to survive
so then, follow their rules and don't think to be smarter
V.M is not for the timid and is straight up local flava complete with smells, sounds and action. The locals drink, party and screw to relax. It is dirty and no frills but for any one with inner city/urban roots you will pick up on the vibe right away. It would be wise to take a local guide with you who can speak for you and seal the deals if you can't because english is not an option there. And don't be a *******! Take a taxi into/out of this area as it is in a really ruff area surrounded by ambush alleys.
Altho i have seen cops roll thru there(in patrol cars and never on foot) i would guess the place is regulated by the local crime king pin which propably means that the place is safer than having the cops keep'n the peace. Just remember that you're a visiter and not a local and no matter what you try to do to blend in they'll all know it. As stated it is were most of the work'n locals go to get their rocks off. Alot of the girls there are used up or just plain busted From a hard life.
I would guess just by the volume flow that most of the chicks there get 6+ customers a day. All the same you can catch some jems there,Girls that have just started in the trade or only work 2 days a week. Also a few that had to be under 18.
A lot of the girls from there also work Copa and i've seen the place half empty out on some afternoons when the girls change out fits and head out for copa and the bigger bucks they can make there. So don't be fooled, a lot of the girls that work Copa come from here after an evening of work'n their local/regulars for a quarter of what they'll charge in Copa.
If you're interested in seeing the true ground zero of the pro-game in rio this is the place to go, and i've never had a bad time there. Have a beer and go with the flow.
Has anybody been at Lapas kicking nightlife? Some friends of mine told that's
the spot if you wanna hook up non pros. There's a lot nightclubs on it's two main streets. If anyone has some info about that place please share it with all of us. ;D

Try Asa Branca Fridays & Saturdays. They have live bands.
Full of Favela garotas (& garotos of course). Best time to go 11:00-02:00.
Some of them real cuties. Very easy to score there.
Other places to try are those two night clubs one next to other at the lower end of Av Rio Branco opposite the metro station.
Can not recall the name now but is the one between Gloria and Carioca.
El Greco
Guys,
I'll be in Rio the first 2 weeks in October (my first trip)! If anyone is there at the time, let's hook up for a few cold ones. Hit me up on my PM.
There are also some great traditional Brazilian music clubs in Lapa, which is also just a very cool neighborhood to walk around in. My favorite club is Carioca de Gema - crowded but great live music and lots of beautiful people. Not a mongering place unless you speak good Portuguese, which I don't, but worth it for the people-watching and the music.
One warning about Lapa: The streetwalkers there, no matter how beautiful they look to you, are NOT WOMEN! Trust me on this, and not your eyes, or you'll be in for a big surprise!

El GrecoAlight El Greco! I think the best way to get there is metro but which stop is the closest, maybe Cinelândia? I'm not familiar with the area so I thought check it daytime before go there at night. Gotta stroll 'round anyway by myself as solo.
Do you have a clue if there's pro action in those night clubs? If there's any I read from somewhere that there's a cheap hotel area nearby so guess there's some cheap motels charging per hours too!

These joints might be just perfect for getting the hook up with non pros... I was planning to go check this one joint in Ramos, called Imbeatriz Leopoldinese. It should be kicking at the weekends as every else fridays and saturdays. Heard that garotas approach you easily. An other one is Mangueira Samba Escola? Does anybody have a personal experience from these joints?

this v mimosa discussion is interesting, maybe it should continue under the rio thread, which is where it belongs.
i've never been to v mimosa myself, but might give it a go next time i visit rio.
i have a few more questions that probably sperto or others may answer:
- is there any action in vm by day (mid and late afternoon)?
- do you pay the vm girls in arrears as we do in copa?
- is vm just one street? if not, how many streets are there? is there a map of vm somewhere on the net?
- is it easy to get a taxi in there to come back?
- do vm girls usually have id that you can check to make sure they're not **** if they look too young?
thanks,

I've been in Mangueira and that was kinda intreresting. Lots of tourists there so your chance to monger would be close to nil.
Already outside there were lots of people, thousands I'd say. As usual weather was hot even though it was night. It took about 45 minutes to get the tickets and then we stood (practically) in a line to get in for another 45 minutes. Inside it was hot and LOUD. Absolutely impossible to communicate even if you know signlanguage, because the place was packed. So there I was after about 1.5 hours, surrounded by sweaty people unable to talk or do just about anything. Not exactly my cup of tea.

vm operates 24/7 non stop.
reals? of course.
basically only one street.
saturday and friday nights its rather simple to get a taxi, other times you may end up waiting. ask someone to call you a cab from praca da bandeira.
vm girls usually don't carry id's or they are fake. remember if you are a foreigner and she has a fake id you will face same punishment as if you knew that girl was a minor. choose wisely.

Here is a Map of VM..........That is a great map. Where can I find the rest of it?
Well first off; "Nodd", I think your Vila Mimosa map will be the most "printed" item from this board!
And yeah, where did you get that map?
About the samba schools; my carioca friend/portugese teacher suggested these as a good move. She wasn't sure if they would be hoppin' this time of year. But Veja Rio, the magazine you get from the "bancas", has the listing of which schools are playing.
Anyone got anything to add?
Guys can anyone elaborate on there experience at Mea Pettaca.
I have been told the place is getting a rough American crowd.
So veterans stay away from the place now.
can anyone share the quality of Copa?
So you're ready to commit to taking the plunge into the Villa Mimosa cesspool?
Location of the motel.
Look at the map attached.
If you arrive by foot from Praca da Bandeira the yellow and green lines shows alternative routes to VM (Rua Sotero dos Reis). I always arrive by the yellow route and leave by the green. This way I don't miss the girls having a churrasco in the beginning of the street.
You can pick the bus 455 Meier at Avenida NS Copacabana. When you get of at Praca da Bandeira you will see the other passengers looking at you with big smiles. Everybody knowing where the horny gringo is heading. :)
Alternative take the metro to São Cristovão.

I took the Metro to the station past São Cristovão, since I had remembered two different stops mentioned. I did return via São Cristovão, and it's not very far. I'll post a more thorough report in the main section.
That is a great map. I wish I had seen it before I went yesterday.
"Has anybody been at Lapas kicking nightlife? Some friends of mine told that's

And so the foreign prostitution scene is FINALLY moving back to Lapa after a 50 year extended leave of absense in Copacabana. Will this be the death-knell of Copa's pay-for-play scene?
Perhaps.
The typical evolution of carioca nightlife goes soomething like this:
Middle-class Brazilians find a place and start to come. They bring non-mongering gringo friends who post about it on travel websites. Gringo0chasing girls then show up after these guys. sooner or later, the mongers hear about the place and start showing up. They are quickly followed by the prostitutes. Seeing the prostitutes, the middle-class Brazilian girls leave, followed by the gringo-chasers (as there's nothing worse for a gringo chaser than being misidentified as a prostitute). then the middl-eclass Brazilian boys leave, leaving the place to gringos and pros.
Lapa's big enough that this won't hapopen in a day, a year, or even, perhaps, a decade. But if mongers looking for free sex become a big presence there, slowly but surely, most of the non-pro Brazilian girls will start avoiding gringos like the plague.

What do you mean about prostitution moving to Lapa?
The only p4p action available in that bairro is the kind with an Adam's apple and a weewee.
There are plenty of legitimate dance clubs to be found in Lapa. And as for the Friday night street parties, I have not seen more than 2 other gringos there on any given night. I highly doubt your typical *****-mongering gringo in town for only a week will make it a mission to go to this notoriously "unsafe" part of town when action can be found so much more easily in Copacabana.
For the few who can speak a few licks of Portuguese and are up to the challenge of approaching pretty girls, I completely recommend Lapa on Friday nights for doing so.

I once found a online map, like maps.yahoo.com, for Rio but I can't find it anymore. Can anyone point me to it? One for Sau Paulo would be appreciated as well.
Nail on the fuking HEAD.
This is what I was trying to AVOID. I want to keep that Foreign Behavior limited to COPA. Lapa was my spot till I told a couple of Joes. And they told a couple of Joes.
Keep that mentality limited to the tables of HELP and Mea P.
The idea is Ghettoize it, one politician told me.
As long as you keep the BET, sports gear, shit limited in this square area-- do what the F*ck you want. No judgement will be passed.
That is my repsite from the seedy sh*t.
The change will never happen though Macunaima, because Copa is all some know and I'm glad of it. Some cats adapt to change and can come and go without a ruckuss, but some just want 2B see and heard. (NEON & LOUD)
So don't worry Macunaima, their not coming to the neighborhood-- just driving thru.
Lapa requires language skills, and work. Work to get the NON-PRO's.
Thats why when I'm in RIO, I'm 48hrs and out to another clandestine MECA.
I got MECA's, no gringo's, no stereotypes, no BET & MTV.
Straight search & Discover like DE SOTO.
The garotas would never venture their because it's not their target market. The garotas go where the clients R and the clients go where the fast garotas are historically. So you may have a couple of guys venture away from the tables but not many, not many. The comfort zone is the tables and u going 2 far requires navigation skills and language skills.
Plus LAPA is just a different scene all together.
A HELP cat won't be comfortable enough or to case that scene because after dark, its gets primitive around that area and there R no tourist police to save U from the predators.
I mean that is to close to CENTRO to be ignorant about location and behavior, w/o POLICIA.
So if anything its just a FAD or SCENIC "to do".
Don't sell the house --the property value stable.
I pray to God and all the orixás that you will get your own section of the forum (Liucio in Brazil) very soon. It would be great to have all your valuable and informative reports in one place.
U continue to spite me but I do not care Y.
I am really sorry U disagree. Y do u waste your time posing 4 me

The real is like a sky rocket. I wish I had loaded up on reals a month ago. It's almost 10% higher today than it was last month. Brazil is getting expensive.
James Howard sez:
"The only p4p action available in that bairro is the kind with an Adam's apple and a weewee."
First of all, that's simply not true. There are several heterosexual prostitution scenes in and around Lapa, just none near the arcos, which is probably where you are accustomed to hanging out.
Secondly, read my post again, James: I'm not talking about mongers going to Lapa to pick up pros, am I? I wrote that post in response to the comment, below, that Lapa was the place for mongers to go if they were looking for free sex with "normal" women. My point was that the more gringos go to Lapa, the more pros will FOLLOW.
Got it now?
"And as for the Friday night street parties, I have not seen more than 2 other gringos there on any given night."
Oh, come ON, James. Then you REALLY are not paying attention. Wake the fuck up, man. There are dozens upon dozens of gringos in Lapa. Shit, a guy can't even get into Democráticos anymore with out running over a Californian in dreadlocks. Lapa is HARDLY some exotic "Brazilians only" scene. I did research there on gringos 6 years ago, when it was even more "off the map" than it is now and even then, I could usually find 20-30 gringos near the Arcos on any given Friday night. That number had now doubled or even trippled. Especially during tourist season. If you think Lapa's some sort of "exotic" environment that few gringos know about, you are way behind the curve, my friend.
The difference is that most the Lapa gringos are still young backpackers and English teachers and the like and not your typical middle-aged monger crowd. These are the kind of guys who HATE sexual tourists and who are the typical prey of your average lower-middle class gringo-chaser. So perhaps you're not even noticing them.
As for safety, check out crime stats in Lapa and Copa and then get back to me about how dangerous Lapa is. The center is much, much safer than Copa, over all. Copa is the worst neighborhood in Rio for muggings, petty theft and assaults.
Good to see you have come over from the other site, your contributions are always of high value and accuracy, all the qualities that *some other* posters here tend to lack here, not referring to anyone in particular of course..............................

Pro
Pro asks:
"I can't see how your teacher's salary (let's say some miserable +/- 1200 reals/month ?) allows you to be the expert on Rio's regular nightlife you proclaim to be."
First of all, Pro, I'm not paying for sex, am I? So there's a big sum of money I don't need to spend. Second of all, I'm not tossing cash around as if it were going out of style, trying to impress people. I usually buy one drink, sit back and watch and LISTEN. So how much cash do you think it takes to spend a night out at Help in that style? 50 reais? Plus there are plenty of free scenes, like Balconey and Mabs and Meia Pataca. As to termas, there's not much field work that can be done there, other than observing girls going with guys and what the routine is. You don't have to hang out at a termas night after night to figure out the routine: a couple of visits is enough. Where I get most of my useful info regarding termas is in interviewing and talking to termas workers outside of the workplace.
The difference between us is in the kind of information we're looking for, Pro. You're looking for a good time: I'm looking for information on how the scene WORKS. Cash is needed for the first thing, not the second. Time, patience, good Portuguese, and a lot of reading is necessary for the second.
You don't see me on here giving out info on where the best buys are or what the best termas is, do you? Why? Because I don't know: I'm not a consumer in the sex industry: I'm an observor. What you DO see me giving info on is how the laws work, where repression is coming down and why and what many of not most of the women are thinking and doing. THAT info I have because, unlike you, I'm not in the audience, I'm backstage in the dressing room.
So the kind of expertise you're looking for, I don't have. Then again, I don't act as if I have it. I have no idea how the spectacle looks from the audience, outside from what I hear you audience members saying. I don't know if it's a good spectacle or a bad spectacle. I'm more interested in how the actresses live their lives and why the audience comes to the theater in the first place.
And to get that kind of information, one doesn't have to spend a lot of money.
Why R U guys constantly going back-and forth w/ this nonsense.
What is it jealousy or envy or animosity.

Useful information ( truthfull and factual information) is a positive for all, and should be shared by all and for the benefit of all members of WSG. But please, if its going to get to the point of insulting each others views, or personal attacks, I think it would be more appropriate to use PM. Lets stop the negativity and be gentlemen.

Some Brazilian consulates still seem to give out the 5 year type. There is a whole thread about it on Flyertalk.com - I´d recommend checking it out. I think you can renew your passport anytime. No need to say it´s lost.
I know there has been some talk of a change in laws in Brazil making it so that you don´t have to get a visa anymore. Honestly, all the countries that charge so much (and don´t give a multiple entry type), basically are lower down on the list of places that I´ll go back to. I know the US is pretty anal on visas, and the reciprocity and such.

I was in Rio last October. The weather isn't that good this time of year. It was overcast every single day I was there. I brought a bunch of shorts but I wished I had brought more pants. People say to dress badly to fit in. I found that not to be the case. Even in copa there are a fair number of people that dress decently, not to the nines but better than most Americans. I definitely felt out of place wearing shorts and with sandals on in Centro.
How is the weather like in Rio right now?
What would be like in the first week of October?
JustGotBack,
You're right about most Brasileiros dress at least decently, with long pants and shoes. Especially at night. You can avoid the probem of questionalble weather in August thru October by going to the Nordeste. Bahia and further north e.g., Recife for example has very decent weather and the beaches are well popluated during those months. It does rain lightly for 30-45 minutes in the early evering, but the weather is very good otherwise.
I sent my friend an e-mail, asking about the criteria for denying the 5yr Visa and pffering the 90day visa instead.
I will advise once he responds. He worked there 2 years ago.

Hey Fellas,
I’m traveling to Rio for the first time...I've noticed in filling out my Visa form it ask for me to "provide further insight on intended trip and, as applicable, list relationship to parties being visited, where I am staying, etc"
This may sound like a dumb question but...should I state the obvious or do you guys have some suggestions that I can list.
Any help would be appreciated

This is a serious question and one that I hope is treated as such.
Have anyone experienced what I like to call the "Rio Afterglow?" I usually don't have any problem approaching and getting dates with "regular" women, but it seems after a trip to Rio women seem drawn to me. A friend of mine thinks I might still be giving off pheromones from all the sex.
As an example, I stopped at a mall kiosk to buy some specialty lotions and the attractive young woman took my hand as part of the sales process. She was very friendly and chatty which I attributed to her just trying to make a sale. What was odd was I saw her later in another part of the mall and she once again took my hand then proceeded to ask me if she should go alone or with her boyfriend on an upcoming leisure trip. I told her she should either go alone or with an older more experienced traveler. (In case you are curious, I did get her number).
I have noticed that these type of experiences seem to happen a lot after a trip to Rio. I attribute it to the (false) confidence that comes from having great sex with a variety of young attractive women.
Anyone else have these experiences?
In San Diego, CA many of the girls who work in mall kiosks are from Brazil. It's one of those job illegals who work for cash survive on. I have a collection of t-shirts I bought just to meet Brazilian girls at Horton Plaza and along the waterfront.
I think you hit the nail right on the head, Exec.
I think it has to do with your self-confidence, which improves dramartically after coming to a place where you can pretty much pay for what you want.
Self-confidence helps you take advantage of things you might otherwise miss when you get back home.

Had to extent my visa when I was in Rio past August, and thought I’d share a bit of information regarding the procedure, especially since the Policia Federal seems to have gotten quite technology-fancy this last year – and now, I find it somewhat difficult for someone to handle this who doesn’t speak any Portuguese at all. So here’s the scoop:
Visa extensions are handled by the Departamento de Polícia Federal (Federal Police Department) whose Superintendência Regional do Rio de Janeiro (Regional Superintendency for Rio de Janeiro) is located at the following address:
Av. Rodrigues Alves, 1 - 3º andar
Centro/CEP 20081-250
Phone:
(21) 3213-1400 (PABX)
Fax:
(21) 2253-3454
No reason to call or fax anything – they are unable to handle most matters via phone or fax. Just go there – any cab driver should know it. The main entrance is at Av. Venezuela.
Be ready to explain why and how much longer you need to stay (bring passport, Brazilian entry card, and your return ticket). Fill in the form that you’re provided – the agents are likely to help (I speak Portuguese, so I am not sure how good their English is). While in 2004, you were handed a payment slip for the extension fee (something like 20 Reais or so), this year, you receive a tiny little slip of paper with a URL (www.dpf.gov.br). What you have to do is you is the following:
1. Go to a nearby cybercafé (there are several on Rio Branco).
2. Enter www.dpf.gov.br.
3. As specified on the slip, click on GRU – GUIA DE RECOLHIMENTO DA UNIÃO in the upper part of the page. GRU means Federal Tax Collection Forms.
4. Click on GRU-FUNAPOL. This stands for Federal Tax Collection Forms, National Police Fund. It is used by the Federal Police Department for the collection of taxes and fees for passports, foreign citizen IDS and visas, private security, international transportation, weapons, etc.
5. As a foreign citizen, click on GRU para pessoas e entidades estrangeiras (Federal Tax Collection Form for Foreign Individuals and Entities).
6. You’re ready to complete your form:
Nome: Your name
Endereço: Address
Bairro: District
Cidade: City
Pais: Country
Email: self-explanatory
Nome da Mãe: Mother’s Name
Nome do Pai: Father’s Name
Unidade Arrecadadora: Collecting Unit. Select SUPERINTENDENCIA REGIONAL NO ESTADO DE RIO DE JANEIRO from the drop-down list (as specified on the slip).
Código da Receita STN: Fill in 140090 as specified on the slip. The field below is automatically filled in and should read PEDIDO DE PRORROGAÇÃO DE ESTADA (APPLICATION FOR EXTENSION OF STAY).
Valor Total R$: Total Amount in Brazilian Reais. As of late August 2005, the amount was R$ 22.08.
7. Once you're sure you've filled everything out correctly, click on Gerar Guia (Create Form) to prepare your form.
8. That’s your payment slip. Print out the page and take it to the nearest bank to pay. Again, there are several on Rio Branco (Banco do Brasil, Itaú, etc.)
9. Take the stamped copy of the payment slip back to the Federal Police – and you should be all set.
Hope this helps…

Hi guys,
Where can I watch NCAA football while in Rio?
I will be down there for awhile and do not want to miss the Tenessee-GA game on CBS next Saturday.
Thanks,
TJ
Sunday and Monday night pro games can be watched at the Marriot. You should meet many ex-pats there. At times, games are televised on some Brazilian channels.
College games are gonna be tough. I use to follow games live on the internet.
That would be my suggestion. You may be able to find someone with DirectTV w/American chip. That way, you can get all of the channels, like you do back home.
Hi Guys,
In advance I want to thank everyone for the great info we've found here... and yes, this is a lady invading your "man space" - haha
My boyfriend and I are using this site to help plan our "play trip" to Rio. Sadly, there aren't alot of Female Sex Travelers out there for me to get answers from, so I'm hoping you guys won't mind me hanging with you.
I know alot of guys think he's crazy for taking me with him. We got the same reaction before our Bangkok trip... "You're taking your girlfriend? WTF?!?" Strangely enough, the guys at Nana and Patpong seemed ok with me and even expressed their envy to my honey when they saw us having such a great time... we seemed to stir up the go-go bars quite a bit... something about a 5'5" slim blond half-dressed (or not), smiling, and dancing on a poll to Billy Idol’s “White Wedding” that sort of stood out – haha – and sometimes drew a crowd ;) Anyway, I digress - the girls and I got along great and showed my honey a wonderful time; the mamasans and the other travelers seemed to accept me too after an initial “WTF?!?” It was a great 2 weeks.
Here's the thing: Asian men just aren't my thing, and I'm not into women, so this trip we're planning on Rio so we can both play. I've found some info on the net about male escorts and from what I see on the pics, they will most definitely be my "thing". Being a couple, there's not a lot of info out there that answers some of our questions – and like I said NO info for women. I'm hoping that some of you that have traveled in Rio would take the time to give your opinions on some of our concerns.
Any help would be appreciated... TIA
1. Would we (as a couple) be welcome at HELP Disco?
2. Are there sex shows that welcome couples?
3. Has anyone every heard of a couple attending a festa with other mongers?
4. If so, how would the men treat the female half of the couple?
5. Can “Don” arrange male escorts for me?
6. My honey and I are both straight… So could we have a party with say… 3 guys for me and 3 girls for him? Should we use the same agency for the girls and the guys?
7. Will the guys understand that they are there for me and not the other providers?
8. How would the guys treat my man?
9. How would the girls treat me?
10. I get really turned on watching guys get it on. If we had a little party (like above) would the guys go with me and give me a little show until I wanted to join them? Obviously I'm talking about male escorts, not mongers.
11. Is tequila really hard to get?
12. Is weed hard to get? Is that dangerous or unwise?
13. Are there any safety concerns that would apply more to us because we are a couple or to me because I am a woman?
14. We’re thinking of staying at Ipanema Beach… we’ve read that it’s less crowded there and I would like to be able to get away from the noise when I want. What do you think? And where is a good place to stay? Not the cheapest – and not the most expensive either.
Thanks to all of you who take the time !!
Figures:
You'll be welcomed in Help. Lots of tourist and couples go there. It's a Disco, you know. You can also go to Franks and Barbarella-the brazilian idea of an american style club. (Franks has a live sex show at 2a everynite, btw.) actually any club in Rio will welcome you.
I suspect some of the garotas will want to get into your pants. some of them are bi, some are lesbians.
Sunday is couples or swingers nite at Solarium termas.
There are 2 swing clubs that i know of in Rio: 2a2 and clube Ministre.
Tequila: Jose Cuervo Gold or Silver are readily available at most bars. higher end tequila may be found at some liquor stores.
weed: proceed at your own risk. this isn't the US, a small amount could get you into serious trouble.
where to stay: depends on what you want:
hotel offers safety, but if you want a playmate to visit, there are guest fees to pay; and they have daily towel and linen service.
an apartment offers you the freedom to have as many guest as you like, and gives you a taste of what its like to live like a local: gotta get or prepare your own meals, make your bed, no linens, towel service.
check the hotel section of the brazil board for more info.
have a great trip and please post a trip report when you return.
Yes i agree 100 %, this happens after every trip and only lasts about a week or so.
Last time I came back from Rio and I had a vintage time, I was in the gym in my town. A personal trainer approached me while I was exercising and she knows almost why I go to Rio and that I just got back but she told me I looked great , tan and relaxed and I must have had a great time. I told her I had the best time and she almost knew what I was talking about, then she said to me take my number and call me i would like to help you out with your workouts (For free) .
Well this type of atraction mostly happens when I return from Rio as I feel that sensuality is in the air in Rio and we pick it up along with the easy sexual relations wether for free or P4P it just changes our whole attitude and stays with us for a short time even while we return to our cold and difficult for sex society.
Well my glow is gone now but I plan a trip soon before our winter to pick it up again as I like the way it feels.
In San Diego, CA many of the girls who work in mall kiosks are from Brazil. It's one of those job illegals who work for cash survive on. I have a collection of t-shirts I bought just to meet Brazilian girls at Horton Plaza and along the waterfront.
Yes I have a collection of these T shirts also. Recently I was staying in south beach Miami Beach at a hotel and I was wearing one of my t shirts from my collection that I have aquired from vendors on copacabana. i was sitting at the pool and next to me a beautiful woman asks me the time in Portuguese, I found out there was a Doctor's convention in the hotel of Brazilian Doctors, this woman was from Porto Allegre, her husband was the doctor now working.
For the next couple of days many Brazilian woman asked me the time at the pool in Portuguese, they were all Doctor's wives, I would like to tell you I scored with one of them but it didn't happen.
The only thing my Portuguese got me that week was many free drinks as the waitresses and bartenders in the hotel were brazilian and I spoke to them in Portuguese and they almost never charged me for anything and it was a very expensive place, I will stay there again and wear my chamisetas especially my prized life guard bright red T shirt from the life guards on copacabana, the day I wore that even the pool manager approached me, he was from Rio and that day I never paid for a drink, whacked.
Are these Brasilian girls in San Diego easy to score? I will be there after FE, would like to meet some Brasilians in Cali.

Oh well. Got the 90-day visa.
I wrote that I'm there for vacation and to visit friends. Aalso I said that I would appreciate getting the 5-yr visa so I can return often. In the end, I was denied.
Figures:
I've made a half dozen trips to Rio over the last two years with my girlfriend (also slim, blonde, sexy, but an inch shorter than you) and occasionally other playful couples interested in bedding hot Brasilians, and can testify that it works out pretty well as long as the two of you agree between yourselves on ground rules ahead of time. I'll offer our experience on the topics Chingon didn't cover in his reply:
3. Definitely had festas at VIPS Motel and in apartments with other (carefully selected) mongers, including one with six GDPs from Karla Models that also had two American couples participating. Worked out well, and I have a great videotape to remind us on cold winter nights why we should be back in Rio. The GDPs seem unfazed by having the client girlfriends there, and most are willing to play with you if you're interested.
4. Like in the United States, men respond to women at festinhas based on how the women act towars them. Show you're interested, and they will be; maintain a pleasant but distant demeanor and the guys will gravitate instead towards the GDPs. Again, show some discretion in choosing the mongers you invite to party with you. Generally speaking, the mongers in attendance are probably going to be secretly envious of both your boyfriend and you.
5. I think Don will have no problem at all arranging male escorts, assuming you know who you want from perusing the acompanhante sites ahead of time. Consider another option, though, which works well for my girlfriend: spend some time on Ipanema Beach around Posto 9 your first couple days there, and smile at the Brasilian guys you see that are looking good (but be careful of the steroid hulks that swagger up and down along the waterline -- another woman traveling with us had trouble after picking up one of them). They will be happy to come over and talk, and since most of them are from upper middle class families they usually speak some English. She finds great guys very easily that way, although sometimes the guys want to have sex in private rather than in a festinha. Plus those guys are generally excellent lovers.
6. You could get both guys and women from the same agency, but I'm not certain there is any real advantage to doing so (unless they give a "5 for the price of 4" special or something like that). Keep in mind that the guys at these agencies are primarily hired by a gay clientele, although they enjoy women as well, so they should understand ahead of time that they are there for you rather than your boyfriend.
7. If you find regular Brasilian men on the beach, they will not touch the professional providers at a festinha (at least in front of you) -- they would consider that declasse. If you hire talent from an agency, they will do whatever you want (and maybe a bit more -- know your limits!).
8. "How would the guys treat my man?" If you hire professionals, and make it clear that your boyfriend isn't gay, they will be casually friendly. If you find men on the beach, they will be polite towards your boyfriend, but because jealousy is so intrinsic to Brasilian relationships they won't really be able to figure out what the hell gives between you two.
9. "How would the girls treat me?" I could give a crude answer, but I'll restrain myself. The majority but not all GDPs are willing to have sex with women, and if you are interested they will be. If not, they will pretty much ignore you unless you do or have something interesting (unique sex toys always attract their attention, and if you take pictures or video they like to see the shots of themselves). If your boyfriend picks up a non-pro woman, she will be jealous if you show attention towards your boyfriend while she is there (I speak from painful experience).
10. The male escorts will do what you want them to do.
12. Around sunset on Ipanema Beach, especially just west of Posto 9, there are lots of locals who light up the local marijuana. If you have been on the beach making friends, you will likely be invited to participate. My friends from the US (California) tell me that the quality is truly awful, but I notice they smoke it anyway. I would echo the advice of others and recommend not trying to buy any yourself, or carry or smoke it away from the beach.
13. Safety issues should be simply a matter of being alert and not letting yourself get separated from your boyfriend if you stay in Ipanema. Copa and Arpoador are more dangerous -- be very alert there. And even when visiting Lapa on a Friday night for music and dancing I've had guys try to cut off my girlfriend and separate her away from me -- watch for that. It isn't hard to recognize the kinds of guys that are trouble: if they look like someone you would avoid in the States, you should probably be careful of them in Rio as well.
14. As you've likely gathered, I'm a fan of Ipanema. For a hotel, we use the Ipanema Tower, as all the suites are two bedroom/two bath. That way you can bring home a guy and take one bedroom, and your boyfriend can bring home a woman and use the other. If you two are a bit kinky, Amerioca Travel (Don's outfit) rents out some two bedroom/two bath apartments in Arpoardor that are right next to Le Boy and La Girl (gay and lesbian clubs). My girlfriend looks femme, and most lesbians in Rio are butch; we've found it isn't difficult to pick up a couple of women there and bring them home, and most of them are OK with having a guy in a foursome. "Butch," by the way, is not the same as the American "dyke;" most of these women are good looking.
Hope this helps.
Figures,
You already have a few excellent responses, I'll just add some random thoughts.
Marijuana is not hard to get hold of in Brazil, should be no problem. Would not recommend trying to buy some. But by all means have someone you trust get hold of some for you.
Try the love motels. They're excellent for sex sessions. Be hesitant about booking and prepaying a stay at a hotel until you know their guest policy -- many regular hotels in Rio frown upon guests going up to your room, or flat out don't allow it. That's what motels are for.
In Brazil, "blond" = "class" in most peoples' minds. Brazilian guys are usually crazy about trying to bag a blond girl.
Love motels in Brazil are really something for Americans to see and experience. Total discretion (no visual contact with employees, garages for cars, jacussi, spacious rooms, saunas, giant beds, music, TV, well stocked mini-bar, frig and more). All at discounted prices compared to US expenses. Try them. Unfortunately, the dollar is falling against the real.
Guys,
Got my new Visa today and finally recieved a new 5 year. I guess it boils down to the person who handles your paper work. I recieved two 30 day Visas prior to this one and it was getting a little expensive....
RxHammer
PS I will be in Rio from Oct 11th til the 16th so feel free to PM me if you would like to grab a beer and check out the scene.....I know my way around pretty well after 25+ trips in 4 years.....
The real is like a sky rocket. I wish I had loaded up on reals a month ago. It's almost 10% higher today than it was last month. Brazil is getting expensive.
Well it is 30% more to the euro than it was last April that I was here too.
And now you get better rates at the cambios than at the ATM;s.
At least 10 centavos per euro. Maybe more depending on the cambio.
My two cents (for the ten cents difference, lol)
El Greco
Alight El Greco!
Ice T
Sorry for my late reply but I was in Bangkok and was watching its threads.
The best and easiest way to go from copa (if you do not wish to take a taxi)
is by bus #433 To Villa Isabel. It passes almost in front of it when it turns to the left after leaving the praia route. Ask the driver to tell you when he enters Av Mem de Sa.
It is near to Los Arcos in the begining of Avenida Mem de Sa.
Very easy to find it there.
CINELANDIA is the closest metro station but you might get lost for the first time.

Wow, the prices are getting crazy in Rio and SP. When you take into account the dollar is down from 3.5-4 to 2.2-2.3 and the multiple increases in prices in all of these places from termas in Rio to clubs like Bahamas in SP in the last couple of years, it's as expensive or more expensive than a lot of places in the US.
Some might say the quality is better than the US but I don't even agree with that seeing as most (seemed like 80-90%) had hairy legs/stomachs/bodies and seemed pretty jaded to me. A lot of you guys talk about the girls enjoying the sex unlike pros from the rest of the world, and my opinion on that is some of you seem very easy to fool. They all seemed transperant to me that it's a job and pretending to enjoy it will make the john finish faster and they can stop doing the more uncomfortable part of their job. I know what some of you are thinking maybe they just don't enjoy it with me so that's why I say this and all of you are studs that make them orgasm 50 times, I really don't think so though. In the termas, for example, I saw more than a few times, girls give middle fingers or gagging expressions while their john looked the other way, who knows could have been some guys from this board, they were older gringos. They weren't doing it for me either because they either didn't know I saw or if they realized I saw, they were obviously embarassed, and one tried to come over and explain to me while her john went to the bathroom that she was just playing around, probably fearing I might say something to him.
Also, while their butts are great, a lot of their faces/skin weren't very good at all. Sure, 2-5% are lookers but they're in high demand and hard to find and charge even more unreasonable rates. Now having said all that, I still will go back because it is a different experience. Sometimes the whole country feels like a giant prositute(using this word instead of the "w" one because I think Jackson prefers it) house.
If we want to help each other out, I suggest we go a little out of our ways so that maybe the prices won't keep getting out of hand. Next time you're in Rio or SP mongering, stop by at one of these places that keep increasing their prices, ask them their price, then proceed to tell them(manager if you can) the price was so much less just a short time ago and with their money getting stronger globally it makes no sense to increase their prices as well, then tell them that you're going to a cheaper alternative that doesn't try to gouge its customers and give an actual name that you're going to. For instance, at Solarium (just raised prices from 170 to 190 for 40 minutes and 60 for entry) tell them that you're going to Lu'omos since they're still 170(I think they are at least some one correct me if they increased as well) or at Bahamas tell them that you're going to Kilt. If this happens enough, it'll make their ownership at least stop increasing over and over to see how high they can go until you stop paying because they'll realize that they've hit as high as they can. Some of you might say that not enough people read this forum to make a difference but I think a lot of people do lurk like I mostly do, but it would help if you passed the word along to fellow mongers that you meet/know that don't read this board a lot too. Hopefully what little value is still left in going to Brazil isn't lost.

No one cares enough. They can afford it today but their ext trip will be %6 more. Brasilian this year have enjoyed a modest increase in wages thanks to u and I. Spending $R300 on a garota for 2 hrs whereas it takes her 30 days to earn that amount in any of sector of business. Its too late to stop the craziness, I suggest getting another job. Work 2 jobs and save all year for a 2 week vacation.

Work 2 jobs and save all year for a 2 week vacation.I think people care when it affects their pocket books, and it's not just 6%. Bahamas just increased entry by 20%, 1 hr room by 33%, and the US dollar is down 40%. Solarium increased a one hour session with entry by almost 15% while once again the dollar is down 40% in the last couple of years. I know all these price increases are going to cut some mongers activities down at least at these places, but I'd like us to try to help each other out by doing something active and just make a quick stop at these places and do as I suggested so that maybe prices won't keep going up too dramatically. I know you're joking about getting a second job and I don't need one however I don't like paying more than I feel is fair. If you take into account how much working girls in the US/other countries charge to cost of living for their respective country, Brazilian working girls/termas/clubs like Bahamas/etc. are charging way out of line. Let's help them get back in line.

LOL! This is hillarious, actually I have seen this a couple of times at the Copa termas, before I swore them off. There's this one European guy that I use to see at L'uomo all the time in a wheelchair, (I think he is German) and some of the girls would be doing stuff like that behind his back. And not only have I seen the facial expression of the girls when they are with an ugly guy they don't like, many times they will be talking shit about him in português with their friends, and the guy will be sitting right there with a big smile on his face! Just shows you not to fall in love with these girls, just bang them and move on.
As for the price, you're right about that too, with the current 2.23 exchange rate, unless your company is paying to send you there, Brasil is no longer a great deal, or IMHO even an OK deal. Much cheaper places in SA where you can get the same quality. But I'm sure people that don't know better will keep going to Brasil.
I hear Columbia's pretty good. Gonna go there next.
Also, check out the smaller cities (with better beaches than Rio) -- and get 8-10 looking/atitude girls for <100R. Takes a little more work, but Rio and SP can get a little "been there done that" if you're a repeat offender like myself.
Happy Hunting,
JWadd
P.S. The real is gonna fall (or the dollar will rise), don't worry.

I do my best to hold my end of the rope, but u & I r not being supported by the high rollers. They can afford to drop R$300 for 2 hrs. I egt the best value for my R$
To the mongers that go a lot to Rio/SP, how is it from November through December? Hard to find the better girls? More expensive? The other way around? What time of the year have you found to be best for quality/price?
Thanks

Just got into Rio. At the airport they asked me if I spoke Potuguese and I said a little. The guy asked me in Port. how long I was staying and I told him. He then got ready to stamp my book and then saw all of the stamps and paused. He found a blank spot to put a new stamp then immediately told me to step to the side and get fingerprinted. What is going on? When did they start this stuff again? Another American who has says he has been here 9 times this year said they did it to him too.
However, I saw others before me go right through.

The similar thing happened to me at the airport several times. I think mostly because of all the Brazilian stamps. The Polícia Federal took me into a sideroom to speak with their boss. Asking a lot about how come I speak Portuguese, what I'm doing there and to see if I brought credit card/cash.
Nowadays I get a new fresh passport every 4-5 Years. I also try avoid speaking Portuguese when passing the PF at the airport.
How is the massage places in the daytime and price?
I am very familair with Costa Rica and Zona Blue and Oasis and all them.
How does Rio stack up with price and all, and is BBBJ standard there as it is in Costa Rica?
Thanks so much

This is a great time to go, I know many people who go this time of year. Not too many tourists but it seems that the girls who were away for the winter are starting to come back for the summer season and make some money.

I am very familair with Costa Rica and Zona Blue and Oasis and all them.
How does Rio stack up with price and all, and is BBBJ standard there as it is in Costa Rica?
Thanks so much
BBBJ is not totally standard. I only went to two termas, but in both cases, they pulled out the rubber, but I declined its use for a BJ.
Karla and Scortshow agencies BBBJ was the norm.
There are a lot of massage places in Sampa, I didn't see that many in Rio, since the Scortshow delivery was pretty good, and I didn't need to look for them. I looked in the O Globo newspaper and didn't see very many incall places in the Copa or Ipanama areas.

Yes many girls are trickling back. My favorites at the Miamia Show on Avenida Copacabana will be back next month the guys tell me.
By the way, when you use the internet machines in Brazil be real careful to close out everything you use before leaving. I just sat down and looked over somebody's bank account with HSBC.

This is extremely interesting, usually Im so happy when I land and want to speak portuguese to the first person I meet, now I will keep my mouth shut. Between this and the 90 day visas it looks like they are putting some pressure on certain types of tourists. I guess with a fresh passport you can act dumb and say you are looking to just see the statue at Corcovado.

I think you are right about the high prices. We should be doing something about the prices that they are charging while the dollar is down. And what you stated is a good thing to do. I think that the brazilians don't care, but if enough of us do it and hit them in the wallet they will come down. Alot of people go down to brasil and pay high prices when they don't have to. Because you have it don't mean you have to give it. The reason that a lot of us started going to brasil is because the prices were right and fair. We are the ones who are making those high prices. The prices now are because of us. Remember the days when the dollar went along way. Now we are to willing to pay more then we should. If they can get it from you they will take it.

It looks like AA is fighting Delta, and giving some super low fares from Delta's main gateways.
CVG/ATL/SLC-GRU/GIG on AA: $327+tax
These prices are good TODAY only, but are way less than 1/2 the normal price.
Availability is limited, you might have to book direct on the aa.com website to find availability. Bookins through early December.

Has anyone found a reliable quality international phone service for calling Rio mobile phones from the US? Also, is it possible to send text messages from the US to a Rio based mobile phone?
I am not so much worried about cost as I am quality. The girls I see there are not big on e-mail. It is difficult understanding their Portuguese sometimes when I am right next to them. Over a poor phone connection, it is nearly impossible. Currently I am using www.tel3.com.
Thanks for any help.

I currently use wcicards.com and have no problem with reception.
The prices are listed on the website. Most Brazilians think I am calling from Brazil given the quality of the reception.
You get fewer minutes for cell calls, of course, that seems not to be your major concern.

I just booked a three-leg flight from Gig to Natal, Natal to Recife, Recife to Sao Paulo for $411. You need to book outside Brazil and have an international ticket. My only problem was I had to go through a travel agency and they dinged me $50 for the ticket. Delta had some cheap filights when I booked. I will be in GIG Thanksgiving Day. I had to get a final trip in before my visa is up in February.

I use Gorilla Mobile to call Brazil. Never had any connection problems. The calls are clear. Similar setup like tel3: Register your phone numbers and give them a credit card number. Rates are different though: .18/min to brazil mobile on Gorilla Mobile vs .14/min on tel3. Gorilla mobile has annual fee of $5.95 vs tel3's monthly fee of $1.95

My Fiancee lives in Goiania and only has a cell phone. Since I call her a lot I have shopped around for inexpensive calling alternatives. I use the cards I have found on www.pinonsale.com. I have tried a number of the low priced cards, but find the TCC 24/7 card provides EXCEPTIONALLY HIGH QUALITY CALLS. The price is 103 minutes from a $10 card (it is so popular the $10 card actually costs $12) The cost per minute is about 11 cents per minute. There are MUCH cheaper cards but the connection quality is not as good. There is no per connection fee and I rarely have problems making a connection. Service is provided by ATT. If someone knows another source with the same quality connection at a lower cost, let me know.
As far as airfares go, I usually use either airgorilla.com or airlineconsolidator.com. The prices are very good as well as their customer service. I just bought a flight from NYC to GRU to GYN(Goiania) roundtrip for $624 plus tax ( total about $750) It is cheaper of course if you do not have to fly to the interior like I do.
For those of you who might be interested, our K-1 visa application is in and it appears that the total time from application to visa will be about 3-3 1/2 months. It is SIGNIFICANTLY faster if your application is processed through the Vermont service center.
I met my fiancee on the International Version of Match.com (NOT SEARCHING INTERNATIONAL WOMEN ON THE REGULAR MATCH.COM) If you register on the International version there are HUNDREDS of women to contact as long as you don't mind reading the profiles in Portuguese (or using free translation programs) Make sure you check the Contact Me option and pay the extra charge to let non-members contact you for free. Obviously many of the women can not afford regular memberships so join for free.
In my case, I corresponded with about 50 women until I eliminated the gringo/green card chasers. I have made about 6 trips now to get to know my financee and am very happy. I know this does not work for everyone, but it sure worked for me. (Make sure you use a webcam though before you buy a ticket!!!)
If I were not interested in a full time permanent relationship (which I am) I probably could have f*cked my way around South America for months for free (including lodging)

If you call from home in USA to Brazil does your number pop up on the Garotas cell number?
Do you run the risk of her calling you at 2AM asking for money?

I normally use my Sprint card when calling home from my house in the US. The number people get on there cell phones varies, but it has never been my own. My brother recently tried to call me back, not knowing it was me and could not call the number displayed.
I also tested my wcicards.com card with a friend because he would be visiting Brazil soon and did not want his soon to be ex-wife to know he was out of the country (much less in Rio). We called my US number from Mexico and checked it when we got home later. The number was from Colorado!
So, I am pretty sure that the same will take place when calling Brazil, although nothing is 100% in this game.

I wish we could control price but we got wealthy guys in here.I read that as well; I think people need to do some research about what price is fair before buying things, but apparently a lot of people just don't care. Maybe it'll stop somewhat because the Real is getting stronger against other currencies or maybe Rio/SP will be left to the people that want to overpay.

Eric,
Thanks for your contribution. I truly appreciate your assistance and your wonderful way with words. With all due respect? Give me a break!
First, you are absolutely right I could speak with her on her computer - if she had one. Second, yep, she could go to an internet cafe, and she does and we chat not only by webcam, but also by audio, for free. Well, not exactly free since it costs HER A LOT when she goes to the internet cafe. It costs her NOTHING to accept a cellular phone call.
Convenience. well let's see, the internet cafe is about 15 miles from where she lives, and is often closed during the times we need to talk. So what do I do when I want to talk with her at night, when she is at work, on holidays when the internet cafe is closed, or at 2AM in the morning just to tell her I love her, or when I am away from my computer? Gosh, I could use Skype, but did you check what the outcall rate is before you blasted me? It is $ 0.213 per minute to a Brazilian cell phone - I wouldn't call that "basically free"! Oh, how about your favorite "charity" Gizmo Project? Gosh, only a measly $ 0.199 per minute!
Wow, I sure am a "loser" calling at around $ 0.11 per minute!!! I am calling her on her cell phone for almost half of what your suggestions would cost me and I can reach her 24 hours a day with outstanding voice quality. Yeah, it would be a lot cheaper if she had a land line, but she doesn't. You know how long it would take her to have one installed? And how much it would cost?
Ok, if anyone has a REAL alternative this "loser" would be all ears. Getting blasted by some guy who has made all of 2 posts (including his very mature comments to me) and probably has pimples on his face, is not productive at all.
I was trying to give useful info and some guy calls me a loser?
Grow up, Eric.

Anyone know what exchange rates (US Dollars to Reais) are being offered at cambio parlors, termas, Help, Meia Pataca?
The official rate seems to be approx. BRL2.24 to $1USD. Just want to see if there's a better rate being offered than ATMs.

I got offered 2.10R / 1$ at the airport, with a best offer of 2.15. My hotel also had 2.10. Best offer I got was at terma L'uomo at 2.40R / 1$. I think that Help offers the same rate.

Euro, you got 2.4 at Luomo? That is real good, but then again, they have raised their rates so much they get it back anyway.
I talked to the guys at Mabs, the waiters and the guys who hang around there (I am leaving out names in case you notice) and I mentioned that I only got 2.24 at the airport. As soon as I said that one of them offered me 2.25. When I mentioned a few days later that the rate on Bloomberg was 2.26 he gave me 2.27. So you all might want to ask some of these guys who rent apartments, if you know them, at Mabs.
Also, the maitre'ds at Mabs can help you too. As long as you are spending a little money there they do not care about helping you.
TJ
Isn't changing money at MABs a little dangerous? At Help, they take you to this semi-private enclosure. But I would be uncomfortable to change money at the street cafe. Lots of people that I do not trust hand out there. I saw a car getting broken into right in front of MAB once.
By the way, I am not sure how much L'uomo will let you exchange at once. Each evening I had the same routine: My total bill was always a bit over $100, somewhere between R270 and R310; so I paid with two onehundred dollar bills and got 2.4 exchange rate, with the remainder paid out in reais.

I can tell you that it can be a problem. When I travel to Bolivia (a yellow fever country) and then to Brazil the airlines ask to see your vacination records. No shot, no trip. I also believe that you have to have had the innoculation 10 days prior to entering the country. I have had my shot and always carry my vaccination records with me when I travel in SA.

Last time I went to Rio, I flew Avianca via Bogota, with a nine-hour layover, so I decided to check out the city. I was concerned about the YF issue, too, because I didn't have proof of YF vaccionation, and I wanted to make sure that I could actually go into Bogota WITHOUT having any trouble with the FP in Rio, afterwards. In Bogota, I checked with the Avianca representatives, and they told me that as long as I stayed in Bogota, there wouldn't be any problem. The next morning, when I arrived in Rio, there was no problem whatsoever. As far as I remember, they didn't even check my passport for that.
Still, you are right, technically, you must have a yellow fever shot. As far as I can see, it depends on how long you spent in Colombia, and where. If you have time, I'd recommend that you get one, anyway.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I was in Cartagena for about 5 nights/ 6 days. I should play it safe and get the vaccination, but its sort of a risk in the sense that some times a person can have an allergic reaction or get sick from the yellow fever shot. I will take care of this problem soon, will be in Ipanema on Nov. 18th.
Thanks for the info. Did you have any sort of a reaction to the vaccination? If so, what exactly?

10-23-05, 22:24
Regarding reactions to yellow fever shots: I got mine back in 1999, before taking a trip to the Amazon in Peru (with typhoid, Hepatitis A and B, polio booster, all on the same day). To tell you the truth, there was no reaction at all. The one medication that I personally had some trouble with was the malaria pills (strange nightmares etc.). But yellow fever, I really didn't feel anything at all. But of course, everyone reacts differently.
EA
I had the same deal as El A, a bunch of shots at one time, no reaction that I can remember.
BB
With yellow fever in 60s the army medics would give 24 hours excused duty after shot. Maybe different stuff then, but like a bad flu for a day or so.

don't worry. your american license will do. if the car is private owned (not rental) check what insurance company says, shouldn't be a problem though.
police stops you only for getting money out of you (unless its an accident or speeding). act cool and do not give in any of their demands and you'll be cool.

frankly, while an american driver's license is probably ok since i drive outside the bigger cities where even fewer people speak english, i carry an international driver's license. there are only two entities authorized by the state department to issue these (don't try some of the internet scams) one of which is the aaa. go the the aaa site to download an application then mail it in or take it to a aaa office. it only costs $10 for members and $15 for non-members. essentially it just translates the information into several languages and contains a passport photo. they are valid for one year - cannot be used for driving in the us. by the way, i tried to obtain one when i was in brazil and they wanted close to $120 us and told me it would take almost a week.
please note there is a special version which is used if you travel in either brazil and uruguay. easy to come by and it makes me feel more comfortable when i pass through the police checkpoints.

Lucky ChuckI got an International License from AAA for my 2nd trip to Brasil. But its merely a translation and your regular American license is legal, so I don't both to renew the International License and just carry the out-of-date one along with my American license. The translation came in handy only once when I was trying to rent a car from a guy who spoke no English as it gave him all the info he needed to complete the paperwork.

Here's some advice from someone who has driven extensively in Brasil: Check the latest regulations on license requirements from an official source before you go.
The requirements can change from time to time, so really do your homework. Also, the requirements might not be the same for all foreign nationals, just as visas are different. For US citizens, it used to be that you could drive for up to 6 months on a US license and anything beyond that required an international license. I had heard that this might change so that you would need an international license even for the initial 6 months but I haven't confirmed that.
You need to know the current law because otherwise the police can play games with you. That happened to me on one trip when I was in Rio. I was approached while illegally parked by the police and they demanded my international license. I actually had one, but not in my possession because Avis didn't appear to require it. Anyway, the guy tells me that it's a 2,500R fine for missing the document. I got off with a bribe, but if I had done my DD on the international license requirement, I would have called his bluff. The going rate on a bribe for something like that, by the way, is 50R. I bribed another cop 10R for a more minor offense.
You should get in Int'l DL. It's required. You guys need to read the Brasilina Gov website and also the US State Dept site. An Int'l DL is manadatory and I would not drive in a car in Brasil w/o it. Your just asking for trouble. The document is cheap and it only take 15-20 business days to receive.

Hi,
Who will be in Brazil from 23 of december to 7 of January?
I'm interested to do 4 days in Rio , 4 days in Salvador, 4 days in Fortaleza and 2 days in San Paolo.
Bye
Daniele
Just currious when 2006 carnival is in Rio. I want to avoid it. I was suppose to be in Rio this past week, but a family emergency forced me to cancel my trip. Planning the next one for early next year.
i rented a car in florianopolis, raphaela and i drove up the coast highway for a couple of days. a month or so after returning i discovered my debit card had been charges by the car rental company in the amount about $325.00 for going over the speed limit!! apparently they have a monitoring device which records how fast you have driven the vehicle. what a rip off, nothing was mentioned about this when i rented the vehicle. hell practically all the cars on the freeway are going way faster than the posted speed limit, i was merely traveling as fast as the flow of traffic. if it had been on my credit card i would have refused the charge. i think my bank has a policy of 30 days for contesting a debit charge. anyway i should be more earnest about reviewing the charges, i apparently waited too long before analyzing the charges upon returning. i will check on that next time i rent a vehicle, it was a hidden trap, though probably in the written contract, nothing mentioned verbally as raphaela was just as surprised by the charge as i. z

you may have been ticketed by the police for speeding, and the rental company is simply charging you the fine. radar guns with cameras are all over brazil now. ticketing is automatic. when driving in belo horizonte last month, i noticed that my driver constantly braked hard as i passed certain areas in town. this was the reason (the cameras are well marked).
the cameras also record things besides speeding. i just received a ticket in the mail last week for driving on avenida atlantica with only one hand on the wheel. how someone is supposed to drive a manual shift, and keep both hands on the wheel is beyond me. the fine was r$ 85, and it was less hassle to just pay it than to fight it.

I just returned from RIO and had a great trip. My buddy Carl from the east coast also came down to do some mongering. I met him on my trip last September.
There were very few tourists in RIO now compared to my trip in March. The Italians were gone. Home in Italy working and saving their Euros for their next trip.
This translates into a buyers market when it comes to buying pussy at MP, TA, Balcony, and HELP.
In March HELP seemed packed every night and the girls was almost like having an American woman attitude. Some wouldn't even talk to me or look at me in March. Like I was a leper. Sound like America..eh? There were so many guys and so easy to get 300Reais or even more from some guys at that time.
When standing in HELP now one could see a lot of girls and very few guys. This is a good situation because this means that the cats are starving for mullah.
It was so much more fun to be in HELP now in October. The girls were grabbing my ass and pressuring me to go with me etc. They were talking, communicating, and not just giving me a cold shoulder like in March.
The prices for pussy seemed a full 100Reais to 150Reais less than in March.
The supply of good looking girls is more than abundant. There were lot of girls both at MP and Terrace. Personally I like Terrace better because I think the waiters at MP tend to pad the bills and incorporate tips for themselves in their bills. I just don't trust the MP outfit as much as I do Terrace.
Supposedly HELP was giving the best exchange rate at 2.3R-$1.
If you are alone in HELP I found it smart to stand hanging by one of the bars and let the prey come to you. This worked very well now that the prey were more hungry for money and the food supply of dollar and Reais much less available.
Both Carl and I had plan future trips were we have themes besides just mongering. For him it will be training Jiu-Jitsu. For me hanggliding over by Barra da Tijuca and maybe a tandem parachute jump.
I met several Brazilians on the plane they said I absolutely must visit southern Brazil especially Florianopolis.
Can anybody tell me about Florianopolis. Everybody were praising this place.
Hope my input has been of some value and help to new mongers. Any questions..just contact me.

On this trip I rented an apartment from David at Gringo Management. The apartment was on Rua Bolivar 8. Great apartment with Ocean View of Copacabana.
This apartment is in a very central and nice location. I will be renting there again. David kept his words and promises.
I have seen other posters give negative comments on Gringo Management. That was not my experience. I would rent from David at Gringo Management again.
I also like Bobby at Blameitonrio4travel. My two last air tickets to Rio I have purchased online from him. Good guy too. I met him and greeted him on this trip as well as my trip in Sept last year.
I have no financial interest in reporting this except for being able to buy from guys that have good prices and that keep their promises to me. That counts for something too.
My cents worth.

Track Star - Where the tickets that you purchased from BlameitonRio, less expensive than going to the airlines and booking it youself? I have seen the link for that service on his site, and have wondered about it.
Also, anyone that is in Rio, or that has come back within the last couple of days. How is the weather?
One last question, does anyone think that the incident between the government and the gangs will affect tourist areas. I have heard that in the past when there was a conflict between the government and the gangs, the gangs have attacked tourist areas to disrupt tourism. Is there any truth to this?

Track Star, I have used Dave too and had no problems. I have a couple of questions about Rua Bolivar 8, was it clean? did you see any bugs bigger than an ant? When you went to Help at night did you walk back or take a taxi as this street is too close to take a taxi but you have to walk right through the combat zone at the worst possible hour to get home at night.

Rio Bob,
I also stayed in this building during my August trip and the only time I took a taxi was my first night because I was concerned about what people were saying around this area. After that, I didn't think it'll be woth it. I never felt threatened nor did I walk around looking lost either. I'll be out around such times as 12:00, 4:00, and once I walked from Leme to my apartment around 5:00 in the morining.
I'm not saying "Don't take a cab," I'm just saying I didn't find the need to. Yes it is the combat zone. LOL! And I hated getting harrased by the street kids but of course that is the price you pay for being a mão durou and not taking a R$5.0 ride.

Actually I only saw one roach..so it was bigger than an ant. I killed it and flushed it in the toilet..I also saw some small ants around the sink. Nothing to worry about.
I am a good renter and cleaned the apartment before I left. It was squeaky clean when I left.
I thinki I saved about $100 to buy from Bobby at BlameitonRio4travel. I like him and want to support somebody that can be of help onsite there in RIO as his business is located in Copacabana and I have met him personally twice in the last year.
After I was robbed in Copa last year I never walk anywhere after dark. I move by taxi, even from Rua Bolivar to MP and TA, and HELP and back to apartment.
I did walk from Rua Bolivar to Sicqueirra Grill one evening with my buddy Carl. No problem.
Hope this helps.

David from Gringomanagement (aka gringoroach) and his alcohol-fuelled buddy Bobby seem to be specialised in apartments with roaches, Track Star was lucky to have had to kill just one.
The occasion when I tried their services – or to be more precise: the lack of them – I had to kill more roaches that I could count.

I've already reserved an apt, if I'm not mistaken the same one, for 11/16-19.
Rua Bolivar is a bit better now. There are 2 new restaurants open on the street (or just next to it) and hence the extra activity makes it less attractive for would be robbers to hang as they once did.

Just returned from a quick trip to Rio, and wanted to pass on a couple of details. Arrived at Princes Copa Cabana Hotel mid morning. Great choice if you like hotels. 2 blocks from Ave. Atlantica. Good rate with clean well furnished rooms. Stoped in on the meita pataca tables for a quickie. Got over priced but needed to break the ice of the overnight Delta flight- 150 reals for 2 hour session. Sorry no pics. Not really a stunner anyway. No guest problems at the hotel. Decent crowd at the tables. I didn't see any of the hip hop problems a lot of people on the board have complained about recently. Not really a lot of garotas working the tables.
Took a nap and picked up some blue diamonds at a pharmacia. 80 reals for a pack of 4 over the counter.
Checked into help before 12. Strange sight to see all the garotas lined up to beat the price raise, and then standing in line to check a purse / over night bag.
Drifted arround the club. Music and atmosphere just okay for a Friday. Got latched on to a bahian garota and her friend. Relented and took them both to the hotel arround 2: 30. Agreed 300 reals for both todo noche. First time ever had a problem at the hotel. The Princes didn't want to let both girls up. Had to agree to make one leave by 6. Decent service from both garotas. Uncovered b-j. Completa. bunda. No girl on girl, but you have to have something else to dream about I guess. They did however dig into my mini bar for chocolate and guarnana while I was in the shower.
I think I could have had them both for 200 reals. They just didn't want to take that long ass bus ride back to West Wherever.
1 girl had to leave at 6 so. I just sent them both away-- one wanted to stay because she knew about the cafe de manyan and wanted the hotel breakfast buffet-- both gave me a good wakeup! but I sent them both home at 6AM.
Sunday. Watched the american footbal at the Mariott bar. Then went to Monte Carlo to relax before the delta flight home.
Cab ride into and out of copa. 65 reals 2 hours with Meita Patace garota. 150 reals toda noche with 2 Help girls. 300 reals.
in some places the speed limit is as low as 40 km/h.
i have got tickets for doing 49 when it was 40.
two tickets in buzios totaling r800 and one in fortaleza for r 500.
you cannot avoid paying them. especially on the credit card.
after all this is one of the reasons why the car rental companies will only rent you a vehicle on a credit/debit card.
the only good thing is that the cameras are well marked and easily to see them in time. all you need is to get accustomed to the situation and break down when you approach them.

I've rented from him a number of times . . . without a single hitch . . . or roach. Roaches, by the way are resiliant, crafty, and ubiquitous. Hardly David's fault.

Yes, maybe the fact that David’s apartment was full of roaches due to its lack of cleanliness wasn’t really David’s fault… but the fact that I found on arrival some dirty linen in the bathroom from the last guests was David’s fault, and the fact that there was no linen on the bed was David’s fault, and the fact that David didn’t reply his mobile (it was 9 pm) was David’s fault, to mention just a few of gringoroach.com excellent services.
David and his alcoholic buddy should be avoided like the plague.

I have rented several apartments from Kenn at www.ez-riorentals.com and always have been pleased. Kenn is comparable to any professional you would find in the US. He is prompt for appointments and any problems are addressed immediately.
I usually stay in a large two-bedroom, but when it hasn't been available even the studios Kenn represents have the basic necessities. You don't have to worry about the shower not working or internet not working or roaches. Can't say that he is the cheapest, but the last thing I want when I am in Rio is hassles with my lodging. I enjoy all-nighters and the girls are more comfortable staying in a clean, well-maintained place.
DFWDude:
Carnaval will be celebrated feb 25 to 28, 2006.
that's how they did it!! of course that makes perfect sense now. eg, what do the cameras look like, how can you tell you are getting close to one? i do remember now raphaela saying from time to time to slow down. i was looking at her like -shut up *****- i know how to drive!! heck i wish i had paid more attention, i do remember her pointing i thought she was pointing at the speed limit sign. i thought the car rental guys were ripping me. z
