Sorry just a quick question! Reading this topic i noticed on 3 or so ocassions that some guys mentioned being quoted 2-3 MILLION pesos for TLN, surely that can't be right!

BTW, the banks are giving between 35.75 and 35.80 to the dollar for cash. The change guys on the corner will give you 36. The interbank rate has been hovering between 36.25 and 36.30, so if you had a no fee ATM, you might be able to get that. More likely, youŽll get that less 1% or more via an ATM card.
Where are you seeing $36.80? I am seeing 36.30 everywhere I have checked.

A Mil in Spanish is not a 'million' but a 'thousand!' When they say 3 mil they mean three thousand pesos! A million in Spanish is 'Millon!' The chicas never quote a 'millon.'

I get that I am paying a premium at a place like DR nights. But the package they offer seems to be worth it: Hassle free "mongering", beachfront, five star service, etc. etc. Again: This would be something I would invest in as a "once in a lifetime" thing and I would be willing to pay for it. I realize that I probably could get the same girls cheaper on my own, but that is only 50% of the deal for me. I also want comfort, pampering and laziness.

RJSSS212If you vacation on the South side of the island, you might look at Total Satisfaction or Periastron Vacations. These two share the same hotel in Boca Chica and are about half as much as DR Nights or Alexis Club. I have stayed there twice in the last year and can highly recommend.

Cell phone reception is not the best in front of the V Centenario. There is a Banco Popular ATM machine near the cajeros (cashiers) in the casino in the V Centenario, that ATM will dispense up to 5,000 pesos per transaction, which is better than the Banco Leon ATM in the lobby which only dispenses 2,000 pesos per transaction. You can go to the cashiers in the casino and they will give you change for 1,000 or larger peso bills.
Torre (tower) Veiramar 1 is a 10 floor condominium building next to the V Centenario Hotel. Ver means to see, Mar means Sea (ocean). Dejame (de ha mee) ver. Let me see. Dejame ver tu tetas, hahaha.
V Centenario is one of the more expensive hotels in SDQ. If you know the names of your amigas, when you check-in, you may be able to give the front desk those names and tell them that those amigas (or you can say clients or cousins) will be visiting you. At the Jaragua Hotel and Casino if you give the names of amigas at check-in those chicas can visit your room. I have never stayed at the V Centenario, sorry I can't be of more help regarding your specific question.

I'm following the board for a while and getting VERY interested by a trip to Sosua. Planning on being there from the 6th to the 13th of June. Also planning on staying at Terra Linda unless someone has any better recommandation! Sturdy 12 ounce plastic cupsJust don't put the swiss army knife in your carry on bag, TSA will take it away. I had a nice leatherman tool that I had forgotten in my carry on bag and they took it away. Small flashlight can be useful, usually the lighting in places in DR can be bad.
I always bring chewable immodium and tylenol cold tablets, usually benadryl (tablets and the spray on benadryl). A bag of Hershey miniatures chocolates. Nail clippers, listerine and packets of chewing gum. Wristwatch. Have some napkins inside the car to clean the inside of the windshield of the rental car, dry dusty roads, the inside glass will get dirty and affect visibility when driving at night.

Insect repellant (wipes) the mosquitos in the DR can be fucking brutal
Bug spray (raid) in case the hotel is a dump and has a major bug issue
Bags of candy, depending on if I am visiting a girls family (for the kids)
Ziploc freezer bags to put bottles of shampoo or any other liquid in so it doesn't get all over the inside of my suitcase, (doubled up)

If you will not be renting a car, Zona Colonial is not a bad place to stay. During the day Zona Colonial is good. Late at night Zona Colonial is practically deserted, streets are empty. Hotel Atrium is another place I learned about from that other google map, 1200 pesos per night, good price.
Jetblue has flights in April and May, New York JFK, non-stop to Santo Domingo SDQ. US $75 dollars each way, total price $283 for round trip.

I never knew the Intercontinental V Centenario had an underground parking lot, good to know. I would guess the entrance for the underground lot would be on calle osvaldo baez, the street one block east from avenida pasteur. V Centenario has a small outdoor parking lot on the corner of osvaldo baez and the malecon.
Cell phone reception is not the best in front of the V Centenario. There is a Banco Popular ATM machine near the cajeros (cashiers) in the casino in the V Centenario, that ATM will dispense up to 5,000 pesos per transaction, which is better than the Banco Leon ATM in the lobby which only dispenses 2,000 pesos per transaction. You can go to the cashiers in the casino and they will give you change for 1,000 or larger peso bills.
Torre (tower) Veiramar 1 is a 10 floor condominium building next to the V Centenario Hotel. Ver means to see, Mar means Sea (ocean). Dejame (de ha mee) ver. Let me see. Dejame ver tu tetas, hahaha.
V Centenario is one of the more expensive hotels in SDQ. If you know the names of your amigas, when you check-in, you may be able to give the front desk those names and tell them that those amigas (or you can say clients or cousins) will be visiting you. At the Jaragua Hotel and Casino if you give the names of amigas at check-in those chicas can visit your room. I have never stayed at the V Centenario, sorry I can't be of more help regarding your specific question.The entrance to the parking lot is right within the hotel, actually right below the main entrance, if you've passed by and checked out El Centenario you'll see a sort of tunnel right below the main entrance.
You go down there, and there's a security guard taking care of all the cars, and when you park there's an entrance, to the left of the entrance is the elevator but the elevator does not go down to the parking lot, then you go up the stairs and you'll come out by the hotel's ATM, right behind the front desk and close to the elevators.

From the ground floor of the airport, where you exit, take the escalator to the second floor and to the right is the newly remodeled Claro store.
On Avenida 30 de Marzo about two blocks north of Park Independencia, near zona colonial is a large Claro store. There is another smaller Claro shop on El Conde in Zona Colonial, just east of Calle Duarte.

So the usual "barter" Dominican starts. I go cuanto cuesta este? His reply 800 pesos. I laugh and I think he started to describe all the details of this dumb bird that makes it worth 800 pesos. I then tell him no hablo espanol of which I really don't.
Now the question and answer period starts. The price goes from 800 pesos to $25 in English. I shake my head no and wave the finger. This guy won't leave. The price now is bouncing all over the place and I have done the math in my head and know less than $10 I will buy this bird thing. Price is now $20, two seconds later 600 pesos. Later 5oo pesos showing five fingers. I say 300 pesos and he is like am I crazy. I continue to sip my beer and keep shaking him off. Five minutes later I am putting this bird thing in a plastic bag to bring back to the states............ 300 pesos.
Although I purchased this thing for the price I was willing to pay one always ask ones self..........."Did I still over pay?"

I once bought a large box of "cuban" Cohibas for $25 on Mercado Modelo. I was happy with the bargain. a few years later I learned that those were fake cigars. It felt good when a few years later I saw an american guy buying 3 Cohibas to a beach vendor in Juan Dolio for $20.
There is a store in front of Dominican Bay in Boca Chica that sells fake Lacoste polos for less than $20 . It was a bargain for my less than 30 yr old cousin but not for me who w*hore the original polos at school in the 70's; the price: $2. Lacoste was a cheap brand in the past, now a polo can cost up to a hundred dollars.

By almost any standard, pretty cheap in exchange for the process of cutting/shaping and painting the wood, not counting the cost of materials.

Whenever I buy something in rep dom I always wonder if I paid too much. Except for the larger stores nothing you buy has a price sticker. I was sitting at the colmado across from Navarro Hotel in Santo Domingo and a guy walks up selling this bird thing. I don't know why but I kind of liked this stupid thing. So the usual "barter" Dominican starts. I go cuanto cuesta este? His reply 800 pesos. I laugh and I think he started to describe all the details of this dumb bird that makes it worth 800 pesos. I then tell him no hablo espanol of which I really don't.
Now the question and answer period starts. The price goes from 800 pesos to $25 in English. I shake my head no and wave the finger. This guy won't leave. The price now is bouncing all over the place and I have done the math in my head and know less than $10 I will buy this bird thing. Price is now $20, two seconds later 600 pesos. Later 5oo pesos showing five fingers. I say 300 pesos and he is like am I crazy. I continue to sip my beer and keep shaking him off. Five minutes later I am putting this bird thing in a plastic bag to bring back to the states. 300 pesos.
Although I purchased this thing for the price I was willing to pay one always ask ones self. "Did I still over pay? "

I watched Sanky Panky on my flight down to rep dom. The lady sitting next to me must have thought I was crazy the way I kept laughing. The three dudes were far from the typical macho Dominicano I see but they were still some funny dudes. That fine chica who worked at the resort is a typical, beautiful Dominicana.
60 Millas al Este is the flip side of Sanky Panky. I purchased the DVD when it was first released. The original release does not have English subtitles. As far as I am concerned I was watching a silent movie understanding very little if any Spanish. My understanding the second release has English subtitles.
If one has spent time in the barrio tin roof shacks, time in the campo, time visiting some one who lives in one of the many shacks on the Autopista Durate you will have a better feeling for why people do what they do.
Living in the USA I had a mind set that people can better themselves if they have the desire. It is a fact that is not the case in rep dom. I would think a vast majority of the chicas do what they do because they don't have much other choice when it comes to earning some cash. 60 Millas al Este paints a true picture of the plight of Dominicanos. Most of the DR people I know said that they believed life outside DR was easy, with lot of jobs available and money everywhere. It was not easy, even for legals, to live outside their country, far from friends and relatives, being discriminated. It is harder if they have no education.

I'm studying spanish and will be coming to DR in October. I wanted to try to get ahead of the game, so I'm really studying Spanish hard, but have been told that the Spanish spoken in DR may have a different dialect than what I'm listening to (Learning Spanish like Crazy audio series). Can someone who actually lives there or someone who has spent plenty of time visiting there, please answer the below:

Y as in Yo (I) - do they pronounce it as "Yo" or as "Jo"?
R as in Ahora - do they pronounce that as "a-OHR-ah" or "a-O-DAH"?
ll as in calle - do they pronounce that as "kah-YAY" or "kah-JAY"?
v as in ventana (window) - pronounced as ven-tah-nah" or ben-tah-nah?

While in the DR I've always heard LL pronounced as YAY. Not JAY like MDE or SHAY like BA/MDV. I asked in Dominicana friend here in the states and she said she's heard JAY, but most people say YAY. Either way you'll be understood.

Claro remodeled their store at Las Americas Airport. From the ground floor of the airport, where you exit, take the escalator to the second floor and to the right is the newly remodeled Claro store.
On Avenida 30 de Marzo about two blocks north of Park Independencia, near zona colonial is a large Claro store. There is another smaller Claro shop on El Conde in Zona Colonial, just east of Calle Duarte.I went to SD on April 24th, as soon as I landed after clearing immigrations and customs I went to look for the Claro store, which of course I found this store to be very useful, however when I step inside and buy a sim card from the guy at the counter, he sells me a sim card for about RD$260 with a balance of RD$100.
When I head to pick up my car at the car rental, I take my phone out to call one of my friends and it tells me that the card has no balance and has not been activated. I head back to the aiport, park my car and walk up to the store, I tell the guy at the counter about the issue, he looks at me like I must be drunk or high. He takes my phone and checks it and tells me "Sometimes you have to add an extra amount of money to activate or sort of kick in the system to work" when he tells me that, I just wanted to spit in his face. Seriously, when the fuck are these people (people selling you something or providing service) going to stop this shit? So of course I just took my phone and walked away after he fixed the problem.
I checked into the V Centenario and everything was real smooth and fast, I had a little issue with the front desk around later on at night. I went to Acropolis and picked up one of my amigas, we went to eat something light, some coffee and dessert, nothing big. We headed back to the hotel and I parked the car in the underground garage, we went up to the elevators and hoping that security didn't give me any problems, but everything was good till later on.
After a while I went to drop her off cause nothing happened, since this was the first time meeting (met her on hi5) and then I called one of my other amigas that I knew for sure was going to give me ass. I headed back to her apartment around 12:30am we stayed there talking shit, she took a shower and we went back to the hotel, we didn't stay there because her cousin was there.
When we head back to the hotel, it was around 1am or so and as we're coming up the stairs, I see a security guard in his suit posted there with his radio, he then stops us and asked me if I had registered the young lady, of course I tried to tell him that she was only going to be in the room for about 10 minutes but he redirects me to the front desk.
An asshole at the front desk tells me that there was going to be a charge for visitors, after arguing with him for about 10 minutes and telling him that I had called Intercontinental before and they told me visitors were free, he proceeds to charge me $28 for my visitor, I told him that I was going to inquire about the charge with Intercontinental, this asshole then places a $400 hold on my card, meaning that I had 2 holds on my card, the charge for the room and the incident charges and this new $400 charge that he tells me that "he see's no authorization hold on my room for incidental charges' I didn't continue to argue with him but when I came back I placed a complaint with Intercontinental.
So my advice is, if anyone is staying at the Centenario, you can take up amigas to your room during the day when security is not around, but I'm guessing that after a certain time at night that's when security starts to get strict. And I'm guessing that if come up through the under ground garage and do that, then you won't have a problem, because I tried it 3 times with my amiga that I met on hi5 and I was never told anything.
My amiga from hi5 and I ended up making out for a good part of Sunday, for some reason this chick didn't want to give me any ass, but she did give me some real good head, to me that was kind of stupid, because if she gave me head, but did not want to give me ass, then that makes me scratch my head. Can anyone tell me why a chick would do that? Give me head but no ass? I have never used sim cards in Dom Rep, I have no clue how activation works for a sim card.
Intercontinental V Centanario is in a good location, some rooms have balconies. A police guy I know in Santo Domingo told me some Portuguese guy lost $700 thousand dollars in the casino there and afterwards jumped from his balcony and killed himself. Room rates at the V Centanario are about $150 per night. That hotel tried to charge you a $28 dollar guest fee, that would annoy me.

I have been lazy booking my next trip to SDQ. I looked at the Jetblue site today, they have flights from New York JFK to Santo Domingo, Saturday, May 22, 2010 for $49. There are two cigar shops on the main street in Sosua (the street where Classicos is located). One is on the other side of the street from Classicos, nice shop, located next door to a small cafe. I believe the owner of that shop is a Cuban guy.
On the same side of the street as Classicos, going towards the corner (across from the jewelry store), past el flow bar, before the corner bar, there is a small cigar shop, I believe owned by a German guy.
I have bought cigars in both places, nothing fancy, the cigars I bought were good.
Big scam with fake cohibas in dom rep, the ones they sell on the beaches near the resorts are said to be terrible. Davidoffs are good. After Castro took over in Cuba, many cigar companies left Cuba and relocated in the Dom Rep. There are some very good Dominican made cigars. A genuine Cohiba is a good smoke.

Yeah Centenario did charge me $28 for my visitor, but later on when I complained about it to Intercontinental, they waived the charge.Intercontinental V Centanario and the Holiday Inn in SDQ are owned by the same company. Holiday Inn is more expensive, $176 per night compared to $154 for the V Centanario.
Courtyard and Renaissance Jaragua are owned by the same company with the Courtyard being more expensive.

Try the Cuban Cafe, more or less across the street from Classicos in Sosua. I haven't tried their cigars but have talked to the American owner, seems like he has good quality.

Heading to POP on Tuesday and was thinking of buying some tequila and whiskey to bring with me at the duty free in Miami but from what I read the limit is one liter per person into the DR, anyone know if this is correct? My other question is what are the prices like at the POP airport, they have everything there but are there prices outrageous is it possible some of the stuff could be counterfeit? I would buy at the markets in POP but the selection sucks and the prices were ridiculous. I am looking to buy at least 4 liters.

I read part of the Dominican customs form on the airplane heading to santo domingo. From what I read a foreigner can bring in $500 worth of gifts into the country (once every three months), I saw nothing about limits on the amount of alcohol you can bring in.
For people arriving at SDQ airport you can buy booze and cigarettes at the duty free shop while you wait for your luggage, near the baggage carousel. I wouldn't worry about bringing in 4 liters of booze into the DR.

On average a hurricane hits Dominican Republic every 10 years. Other rainy events have caused major damage on recent years. I have traveled twice in October, no problem at all.

It is pointless to ask about the weather in the Dominican Republic in general as the North and South have almost opposite patterns of rainfall.
The South and East suffer from hurricanes fairly regularly (I would guess a lot more frequently than once in ten years) but the North Coast has not suffered from one for about one hundred years. It has suffered flooding and damage when on the fringe of nearby hurricanes but they have only been rated as tropical storms by the time they impact the North Coast.
If you are staying in gringo buildings and use common sense when out and about in storms you will not be in any danger, although you might be inconvenienced.
The weather in the DR is so unpredictable that no-one should hesitate to book their holiday in advance unless they have absolutely nil flexibility re: their return flight.

Personally, I don't know why you might want to do that. Cialis, Viagra and other ED drugs do not require a prescription in the DR and can be bought over the counter in either the original form, or its generic equivalent. I actually stock up for the trip home with generic cialis from the DR as the cost per pill is about 50 pesos (roughly $1.50 USD) each. The generic cialis works fine for me.

i cannot comment officially here, but i have been told that cialis or lapela purchased in the dr and brought back to the states is frowned upon, but not illegal. i was told that these type of drugs are not considered as a controlled substance and thus allowed.

I reluctantly said yes, but a few minutes later I found I didn't have to go.
The next morning, the GF went to the hospital alone but forgot her cell phone, she called my novia from a payphone and asked we stop by her sisters house and bring the cell to the hospital, at this point my novia sensed I was upset and told me she would go via a gua gua. However, I could tell she was dissapointed I didn't volunteer to go with her.
Afterwards, I felt guilty. We both apologized, her for the imposition and me for not being by her side.

It is not your novia's father who was in the hospital, the father of the novia's best friend was in the hospital, some degree of separation there. Driving around Santo Domingo at 10pm, the traffic is not bad.
I once drove a GF to Plaza de Salud on Ortega y Gasset around 5pm, she had to visit a relative in the hospital there. I was not happy sitting in traffic. The round trip from Lincoln and the malecon to Plaza de Salud took about 2 hours at 5pm.
If a chica asks me to drive her somewhere around rush hour, I will usually say no, unless the place where she wants me to take her is close by.

If they would have gotten a police officer while they were near me I would have surely been screwed out of a lot of money.

That area under Avenida 27 de Febrero is a bit of a shit hole, near the bridge. When I drive to the airport, I take the Malecon to the pontoon bridge, then avenida espana to las americas highway. Not many motos on that route. Taking the local route under Avenida 27 de Febrero late at night from the bridge, it is not the most pleasant drive (I usually take Avenida Espana off of Las Americas to get into the city. One night Anthony Santos was at Le Base Bar and I figured the traffic would be slow on Avenida Espana so I took the Bosch Bridge and the local road under Ave. 27 de Febrero). The exit for Avenida Charles de Gaul, to go north on Charles de Gaul, is closed off of Las Americas Highway.
Some guys on motorcycles totally blow through red lights in sdq. When I get to some intersections, even when I have the green light, I slow down and look, to see if some guy on a motorcycle is ripping through his red light.
They are doing construction on Avenida Espana on the part closest to Las Americas Highway, I did see a few streetwalkers on Avenida Espana at night, on the part closest to Las Americas Highway.

Does anyone know what has happened with Delta flights into POP? When I went to Sosua in May there were daily flights but I am trying to schedule a trip in September and the only viable option is Santiago or SDQ.
American still has flights but since I originate out of Salt Lake UT, Delta is the best option.
Although I had a less than ideal experience with rental cars on my last trip it is beginning to look like SDQ is the best option.

Predictions are that there could be more hurricanes and storms than usual this year
I used to look up the weather online before I would travel to DR, the forecasts were just about always the same for each day, about 85 degrees with a chance of rain. 95% of the time I have been in Dom Rep the weather has been nice and sunny. It may rain for 30 minutes, but the clouds pass and the sun comes out. I have encountered more rain when I travel to the interior part of the country, el cibao; la vega, moca and santiago.
During the past two weeks it has rained a lot in parts of DR.
A heavy rain in Santo Domingo during rush hour makes the traffic go even slower.
Be careful driving during a heavy rain, especially on the roads near the big white bridge (Bosch bridge in santo domingo), some sections of some of those roads, get flooded during a heavy and can be dangerous if you drive into the flooded part going fast.
Some rain often times cools the temperatures, which is not a bad thing.

It has been wet and windy for the past two or 3 weeks, I live in Puerto Rico which is near Dominican Republic, it has been raining more than normal. BTW there was a rain delay for the Mets-Marlins game being held here today.

Climate on the caribbean is crazy and unpredictable. I was on Luis Parrillada, an open (no walls) roofed restaurant on el malecon and it was sunny. I was eating and suddenly a little breeze gain strenght and combined with a 10 minute rain we all ended soaked, clients, employees and the dinner. Then it was sunny again.

Their mofongo is consistently the best I have ever tasted in the DR. Their pork ribs also tastes good, and their Presidente is always iced cold.

The resort in Boca Chica is relaxing and the girls are with you 24 hours a day. Some guys like that some don't. Total Satisfaction and Periastron were the same place for about 9 months but have again gone seperate ways.
Can't comment on the other resorts. BB was more like the Periastron experience except you don't have the same girl for at least 24 hours.

It happened again. I went to the ATM at the farmacia on Delgado and Independencia. I went to take out money using the English menu. I receive a message in Spanish telling me they can not complete the transaction. Put the card right back in the machine and selected the Spanish menu. No problem, a few seconds later it spits out my cash. I am really beginning to think the ATMs do not like English speaking persons.

On my recent stay in DR I stayed in San Pedro(6/28-7/5). While in SP(6/28-7/1) then to SD, me and my novia went to Jumbo market to buy things, after reading several reports about the atm machines, I put my card in hit spanish then checking account and then other amount, I like to takeout $5000 peso the machine rejected that offer but never returned my card, this happened 7/1 am on my way to SD to meet up with several board members sorry I let them down. It took me till Saturday afternoon to get my card back. I will only use the atm type that you swipe your card not completely enter card.

I thought of that, having 2 credit cards but this was my first time in San Pedro at my novia's place not knowing the arer,she not having a safe at her place. I've definitely used the "swipe only" ATMs in Santiago on Calle del Sol. I believe it's the Scotia Bank near the corner of 30 de Marzo. There is also another one in Plaza Internacional. Haven't seen any in Sosua.
If you receive any type of "transaction can not be completed" error message, check your account balance immediately, I've had my account deducted for the amount without receiving cash.
If you are too worried about the ATMs, you can always go inside the bank and do a credit card transaction for cash(costly but safer).
I've seen people using PayPal debit cards in the DR, it's probably the bank and not the card.

At the time you arrive your best option will be the ATMs on the arrival level. If you forget the hotels/casinos all have ATM machines. The next day if you want to exchane USD Franks on El Conde generally gives the best rate.

1. Marriage is a contract in which things other than sexual attraction are important. If she is going to continue as a stripper, will she be contributing to your household budget, mortgage etc.? Since she is not paying for her half of the vacation, it doesn't sound like this is really a partnership.
2. I would not worry too much about the dancing thing. If she wants to fuck other guys, she will, and you don't need to dance with someone to fuck them. All you do is put your cell number into theirs when your spouse is not looking.
3. Rather than getting all jealous about her with Dominican guys who dance with her, you should fuck some attractive Dominicanas (or at least flirt heavily) while you are there. This will make her jealous and help her realize that she could easily fall of the gravy train. If she flirts and you don't, you will come off looking like a neutered house cat. With a Dominican woman you have to be a "tigre" or she will walk all over you.

Frannie offers good advice. In DR just about everybody dances, very old folks to the very young. Certain bars or places where Dominicans go to drink can be populated with 18 year olds to 70 year old people.
I know how you feel, I am not comfortable dancing all the time. For whatever reason with some chicas I am more comfortable, relaxed dancing with in DR. I took a chica and her aunt to Las Colinas Rancho Tipico in Santiago. Big local place under a palm leaf roof. Cheap metal tables and chairs, 75 pesos for large Presidente cervezas. I was the only white guy in the place. I danced with the chica and her aunt. I had fun. The dance floor got crowded, band was playing, the people there were not staring or making fun of me, they are there to have fun, not to be rude.
She dances with other people, you dance with other people.
Salsa is complicated. Merengue is two steps forward, two steps back, a step to each side. Bachata is basic. Drink a few beers and wing it, who cares what other people think. This is not the Olympics or dancing with the stars where a group of judges are watching you and will give you style points. If you watch Dominicans dance there are variations in how each of them dance. Reggaeton is the easiest, just have the chica stand in front of you and let her grind your crouch with her ass.
The chica may have family in the DR, male cousins or female cousins or other female friends who she can invite with you to go dancing, and she can dance with those people, when you don't want to. When she is dancing, gives you a chance to scope out the eye candy in the place. Many places will have televisions, oftentimes with baseball games on, so you can usually watch baseball in most places.
If your chica truly likes you and you truly get along with her, you should have no problem hanging out with her in places where people dance.
Dominicans are for the most part respectful, show respect and you will get respect back.

You can use dollars in most places so you can use your cash until you got to a bank or casa de cambio (exchange house). On most places yo get better prices on pesos but the first hours of your stay it is possible that you are not going to need them. As BQ says, Frank on el Conde gives more for your dollar than other places. Taxis on airport are going to ask you for $40usd, then you can say " Estoy esperando un taxi de Apollo por veintiocho dolares, pero por treinta dolares me voy contigo" (I called an Apollo company taxi and they are picking me up for $28 but I can go with you for $30.) They are going to insist on the $40 price or going down to $35, if thats ok with you then go. You can't wait an outside taxi on airport taxi terminal, just walk a little more out off the area if you call a company taxi.
I have a 4,600 pesos petty with me so I can wait until going to Franks. My first purchase is a 500 pesos calling card for my dominican phone, then the taxi which cost me 750 pesos (barely over $20, I know a guy which offered me that price on my last travel), then a stop at La Bomba Texaco for a 80 pesos large iced cold Presidente light as breakfast (I arrive at 8:30 am) and still have over 3,000 pesos available for a purchase at La Cadena Supermarket.

I had never noticed that machine in the farmacia before or maybe I noticed it and didn't realize what it was. They do sell La Pela but at a big markup. You can also get La Pela at just about any colmado. I have even purchased La Pela at the gas station convience store.

It is more crass that I would use in most cases. Do not get me wrong, some girls like the "street" approach if they know you. You may get better results if you treat the potential girl like a girlfriend. YMMV.

I'm in a sticky situation and don't know what to do. I'm in an on and off relationship with a very beautiful dominican stripper. I'm white, early 30's and decent looking, but she is definitely the more attractive partner. Of course part of our relationship exists because I pay for a lot of shit, but its not a sugar daddy type of thing. We've both discussed the fact that she should stop stripping and maybe we could get more serious but it hasn't happened yet. Well she wants to go to the D.R. for vacation and I would be paying for the entire trip. She really enjoys dancing and while I can get by dancing to hip hop, I am completely clueless with dancing to spanish music. I would probably fall down if I tried to move my feet. She knows this since we had one bad experience at a dance club where I wasn't in the mood to dance and wanted to leave. We discussed the fact that she will want to go to dance clubs most nights and I will really not want to be there. I said, "What are you going to do, dance with other guys while I stand there and watch?" She told me that everybody always dances with other people and it doesn't mean anything. The problem is, she will have 20 guys wanting to dance with her, and I will be standing at the bar probably alone since I don't speak spanish that well. I'm sure she is not going to fuck some other dude, but I'm not too hot on the idea of giving other guys a chance to entice her in a way that I can't. I know she lap dances dudes all the time, but I don't have to see that shit.
Is this trip a recipe for disaster? Am I crazy for not liking this situation or would every red blooded man have a problem with it. I would appreciate your thoughts and comments.
Having dealt with strippers on and off for most of my adult life (never by choice) and as recently as last week in Kenya, you clearly don't have what it takes to manage them objectively and effectively. You lack confidence and a firm grasp of reality and therefore will be used and abused....

You have to be kidding WTF over! Well everyone can give you advice on the so called "relationship" but you will have to crash and burn on your own for all the advice to finally sink in.
The best thing is for you to experience the DR firsthand alone without happy stripper. Then REALLY and truly decide if you should bring her. My thought is once you see the Dominicanas you will not even entertain the thought of bringing her- too much effort. As for dancing, take some lessons, or just go with the flow YOU are not John Travolta and the main thought at the clubs is to have a good time not who dances the best. When the mood hits me no matter where I start dancing with my chica and they absolutely LUV that. One day in Zona Colonial my novia and I were walking and some cool music was playing from a shop, I just grabbed her and started swaying together in the street, the Dominicanas LUV the little things like that which shows you think they are special.
NOW is the time to learn pokito palabras and build up some lingo it will pay dividends later on.

Often the girlfriend wants to visit "FAMILY" but you are not invitied. You pay the cost of the vacation and the chica bangs her old boyfriend who is 10+ years younger than you. And shows back up at your hotel/resort 2-3 days later. Do you really think she is going to tell you all the info before the trip?
Also, every member of her family, extended family, neighbors, friends, etc. Will need dinero for hospitals, medication, computer classes, etc.

I have been looking at going to the DR for a while. Since I can't go to brazil because right now I just don't want the hassle of getting a VISA right now, I figure I hit up DR first. I want to go to Sousa for my first trip and stay at the New Garden. I plan August/September timeframe. I have been reading some reports and I think I made a good choice for my first trip. I will be by myself and hopefully there will be no problem with that. Right now a ticket is costing me about $500. $700 right now. I plan to stay for 7 days. Is there any thing as far as sight seeing and picture taking while I'm there? Does the New Garden have women that works there or around the area. Is it safe for a person traveling by himself? Should I pay no more that 2000 for short or long stay? Should I bring my own Condoms? Any general info about Sousa and the women and things to do would be just great.
