Was in Aurora 911 last week, as a matter of fact, entertaining some visitors. I'd only been to Aurora once (with Strav actually), but couldn't stay long that time so I decided a follow-up visit was in order. It appears to be *THE* strip club in Moscow these days. For one thing, the location is awesomely central, and the prices are quite good for the kind of place it is. At 11pm on this particuar weeknight it was packed, and there was practically no seating available except at the bar and the "restaurant" upstairs. We sat upstairs on the balcony as a warm-up, but dancers sadly aren't allowed up there. Still, it afforded us an eagle's eye view of the action. From my cursory count, there were 40 dancers (good bodies all, but faces on the whole only so-so), 10 waitress (hotter than the dancers, with a couple stunners), 5 bartenders (also hot) and a couple hostesses (who are the hottest by far). The format is well known by now: 100R in-situ full-nude lap dances, 1000R privates, and upwards of 10K for FS (some girls quoted much higher). Like the old Safari, some girls "specialize" in dances, whereas others want FS only. Unlike the old Safari, the girls here aren't very aggressive. A simple "no, thanks" is enough to chase off most of them (unlike Safari, where I often had to start insulting their mothers and threatening physical violence). On the other hand, I found the girls at Aurora to be cold and uninterested. One girl left in the middle of the dance without saying a word, or even asking for money - and I wasn't even pawing this particular one! I figured maybe it was her time on stage, but no, she immediately went to the next booth and asked some (uninterested) geezer in a suit if he wanted a dance. Maybe it was because I was dressed in jeans and a club shirt, whereas this is decidedly a suit and/or white buttondown sorta place. Understand - I'm no spring chicken, but among the clientele in Aurora, I must have been one of the youngest there. Possibly she thought I didn't have enough money to keep her attention. Not all girls were like that, and a couple did show some genuine interest, but even then, they were 100% opposed to surrendering their digits. This is unlike every other strip club I've been to in Moscow where the girls are usually begging to hook up outside the club. They said they'd get fired if caught doing anything like that, and from the fear in their eyes, I'm guessing it might be more than just getting fired. Without a doubt - the club wants their cut on any action involving their girls. Another minor thing that bugged me about Aurora is that it's cavernous - the opposite of cozy. Much more like that of an American strip club than what I'm used to here.

In summary... for entertaining, it's a good place as the service is fast, prices are reasonable, and overall scenery is nice. But for getting my groove on, at least, it fell short of the mark. If I could have hooked up with the Latina-looking waitress I had my eye on, maybe my story would have be different though!

work permit would be minimum price for someone like you (self-employed) will be $5k to $10k.

second option, you marry a russian citizen.

the student visa will cost you tuition and bribes.

fourth option, you get a second passport. this is permitted if you travel between israel and the arab world with frequency.

fifth option, business visas good for 90 days.

option 5 price is still the same as option 1, requiring a company accredited by the russian foreign ministry to hire foreigners, and all details about your background, employment history, and all details about what your work for the company in russia will involve, where you will stay, for how long, bla bal bla. if you're planning to 'fake' all those documents, you better be ready for problems with the authorities.

not getting married, doing middle east shuttle diplomacy or paying for university, then option 2, 3, and 4 won't help you either.

in putin's world, best option these days is always to tell the truth and avoid problems. he's not a fool, nor does he appreciate it if your intention is to scam him.

Fifth option, you forego the multi-entry visas and just use single/dual-entry business visas good for 90 days. Yes, this requires your leaving Russia quite often to renew your visa, so not a cheap option either.Am I missing something? Used to be business visas were good for 1 year. Has that changed?

My night at Aurora was some kind of a special party night. Not sure what it was all about, but they let me in anyway, even though I was not on "the list". So procedures may have been different for that particular night, and they may also change over time as the management, and the girls, acquire a better understanding of just how much money they can extract from the clientele, based on what they've got to offer.

The VIP Kabinyets, that are used for FS, have different rates. Apparently some rooms are nicer than others and nicer rooms cost more. That could be an explanation for why some girls quoted a higher price than others. They may have been trying to upgrade you to a better room.

Didn't have any problem with cold, detached dyeffki on the night I was there, but there was also a special kind of party atmosphere in effect that evening, so maybe that made a difference.

You're right about one thing, they are in business to make money (like every other business, I believe) and it was my impression that every girl there was on the menu, literally. Except maybe for the bartenders. The Crazy Menu had prices for the waitresses and hostesses: for 1000 руб. your waitress would serve you topless for 30 min, or nude for 15 min, something like that. There were also prices for the hostesses. I imagine you could have hooked up with that Latina-looking waitress, if you wanted to pay the price. That thought occurred to me the night I was there, but sadly, I forgot to bring my Molybdenum Amex card. :)

It does seem to be a kind of hybrid club: an efficiently managed money making machine in a big spacious venue, like you might find in the U.S., but with all the advantages of Russia; gorgeous babes, sex on site, full nudity + full bar, not to mention take-out. And, of course, that unique atmosphere of "anything goes" that can only be found in Russia.

Contrast this with the old stand-by: Night Flight. I stopped by on my last trip, mainly for historical reference purposes, you understand. ;) It was a Sunday night, around midnight. They wanted 1100 руб. to get in. The place was very quiet, maybe 4 or 5 guys and about 3x as many girls. The place would have been as quiet as a tomb, if not for the dance music blaring away. Not sure why, since there was no one on the dance floor, and wouldn't be for the rest of the night.

The first thing I noticed was the quality of the girls. They looked more like Hot Dog's... on a good night. Time was, a NF girl was something special, but many of these girls looked like they stumbled in off the street and ended up staying for a drink. One of them was giving me "the eye", so I invited her over to chat. She looked to be in her mid 30's and she appeared pleasant enough, but no more so than 1,000's of other women in Moscow. Four or five years ago, she never would have made it past the front door. I asked her what the going rate was to take a girl out and she said 500 USD. I suggested that maybe this might be a little too much, but she was adamant that no girl would ever leave NF for less. I made it clear that I would not pay that much and she politely excused herself to leave.

Of course, there was no place for her to go, except back to the table to sit and razgovarivari with her padrugi. About 15-20 minutes later she came back to sit with me again. She knew there was no possibility for me to be customer, but that was not her intent. She knew I was an American and she said she had an important question for me. She started working at NF in 2007 and at that time the place was full of Americans, with lots of money to spend. What she wanted to know was: what happened to all the Americans? Over the past 3 or 4 months, they all disappeared. Apparently, it's very seldom now that the girls in NF see an American. She was naturally a little concerned to see 50% of her best customers disappear and she wanted to understand why. She said she was afraid that America didn't like Russia any more and that was why they stopped coming.

I assured her this was not the case, and explained that most of the Americans she met when she started working at NF were, most likely, businessmen who either owned their own, successful, company or they worked for a company who paid to send them to Russia for business reasons. In either event, they were not spending their own money, the company was paying for the good times. Now, the situation is different. Business is not so good and companies have to be careful about how they spend their money and they simply do not want to spend money to send people to Moscow.

This didn't seem to make sense to her because she still met European men at NF; Italians, French, German and British. Why not Americans? Something I've noticed about Russians is that it's difficult for them to understand just how far away America is. They can read a map like everyone else, but when you tell them that it can take 24 hours to travel from the U.S. to Moscow, they are surprised. I explained to her that time is money, and the distance between the U.S. and Russia makes it more expensive for Americans to travel. She gave me a puzzled look. The concept of time=money is one that has yet to fully sink into the Russian psyche.

On my way out, I passed her at the coat check. She was also on her way out, alone. I couldn't help but wonder how many nights she will go home empty handed before she understands that the party is over.

Out on the street, there was the usual gaggle of Militsia and taxis. Why is it that the Militsia only hang out at Hot Dog and NF? Maybe they don't know the party's over either.

Of course, having seen Aurora, it's clear now that there are still Americans in Moscow, maybe not as many, but they are definitely there. They just found something better than NF.

But I think their appeal has more to do with "forbidden fruit" than physical superiority - even though they are not actually forbidden, just exclusively priced. As Pizdyets noted, even among the strippers, there are some who can be bought for full service and some who are just there to dance. That's their call. I think the waitresses consider themselves to be just a little bit higher up on the food chain than the dancers in that they are not necessarily selling their bodies, they have a "real job". The hostesses are obviously the T-rex of the food chain. While they are not there primarily for sex, they might be persuaded to leave with the right guy at the right price. The point is, anything goes, and, to a certain extent, what you end up with is a matter of your game, your negotiation skills and the size of your wallet. And that, as you say, is a powerful drug. Assuming you can afford it.

Bezzie - you really don't know anything about this, do you? I, however, have been living this hell for many years, and I can tell you that a business visa is a jog in the park while a work permit is more like the Ironman Triathlon. Anyone can get a business visa with no documents at all - unless you count your passport and a photo. Just takes cash (on the order of just $500) and a few days. Same can NOT be said of a work permit.

So what's your proposal? Don't live in Russia? Incidentally, one of my buddies was telling me a funny story about an American expat who's been living here for 15 years with absolutely no documents at all! I've never met the guy, but apparently he's never left Russia since entering, and whenever he gets stopped on the street (which is rare, given that he blends in so well at this point), he just drops them 500R and goes along on his way! No doubt there are Russians who have overstayed their visas in the US, so I just think of it as payback. :)

Ironically, I had a wallet full of cash and was plenty ready to spend it. And the waitresses did get topless at one point and stayed that way until we left. My little pseudo-latina had her arms coyly crossed when she wasn't shuttling drinks - trying to hide her breasts. I'd almost feel guilty if I made her get fully naked in that environment. I did play with the idea of slipping her a 1K note just to judge her reaction, but figured it'd probably just be a waste of money. If I do go back (and hell - it's almost inevitable), I'll see what it'd take to bed her.

I'm one of those unlucky ones that does a Businezz Visa every 3 months, I have two main choices, Fast and expensive, or slow and cheap.

The Visa Invite letter can be done at many places (visatorussia.com) and, time managed, you'll get it 2 weeks before you need it for $80. Then its either a $1200 flight to San Fransisco, where they'll do the visa in one day for $300,

or, if you like the Nordic beauties too, pop up for a stay for 5-10 days (dependant on your country of origin and country you apply in) and rustle up some blonde viking Valkyries for a few days.

Here's what I did:
1) Used intimcity.ru to search what I wanted, where, and for how much (they seem to have a good selection compared to the other popular internet sites)

Honestly, I'd usually go for the "known" places which charge from $125 to $145 an hour: Charmel, Fantasy's, ElitTV. The selection is always good, no matter what hour you show up, they're centrally located, the rooms are top-notch and the service is as well.

As I got many useful informations from this forum I want to share my experience from my first trip to moscow (together with some of my buddies).

Just arrived in Moscow Monday and with some suggestions from forum members, found a great apartment near Tverskaya / Pushkinskaya metro. In the interest of the mongering public I have done some research on a Saturday night around 2am.

BLUF: I spent 30 minutes at Bordo and 3+ hours at Aurora 911. Bordo wasn't bad but 911 was great.

Bordo:

Smaller than Aurora 911.
Better furniture (nice relaxing couches)
15 to 20 girls. All Good looking.
No problem getting attention from the girls
Boring stage dancing. I didn't see the dancing girl get naked.

Aurora 911:

Don't get me wrong Strav, all I'm saying is that so far, we are getting reports from others saying that 911 is the best out there. So it sort of takes the motivation to go and try out Bordo, the new SL, and Alexander Club.

As far as other strip places goes, I have to confess that outside of 911, the old 911 (on M. Dmitrovka), the old Safari Lodge and Violetta, I haven't seen much in Moscow.

As for other pick up places - I've just tried the usual list of hang outs (Tema Bar, Che, 16 Tons, Real McCoy, etc) with varying degrees of success. One notable surprise on the last trip was Road House. I was there with a small mixed group (including a girl I was screwing) listening to some jazz - blues music. There were a couple of expat guys sitting at a table when two VERY nice looking Dyevs came in the door looking for a place to sit. I followed these gals around with my eyes for a few minutes (the place is not very big) and eventually they asked the guys if they could share the table with them. Naturally, the guys agreed so the girls sat down. I'm pretty sure there was a language barrier at work judging from the hand signals and body language. But after a few beers and some shooters, both couples got up to dance. The hands started to roam and unfortunately the group I was with wanted to chance locations before I could see how the night turned out for these fellas, but it sure seemed to be going ok so far. It was only about 10:00 PM so there was not much expectation for any serious monger traffic.

I've written about both of these places in the past, but given that we don't have any permanent repository on ISG yet (tho Jackson is diligently working on it), I'll briefly summarize my findings here.

First off, I'll be upfront - strip clubs really aren't my thing. However, drinking is, and if a place is comfortable, affordable, and serves up cold beer without wait, then I'll like it whether there are nekkid chicks there or not. And in that sense, Aurora delivers the goods. They have a decent selection of reasonably priced drinks, the aforementioned service button ensures that they're delivered pronto, and the chairs are adequately comfortable. Furthermore, the girls aren't too pushy. For those of you who have been to places like the old Safari, you know what I mean. I can't count the times there where an undesireable girl started gyrating in my lap, and, after politely asking her to remove her behind from my crotch, she only redoubled her efforts, ultimately escalating to my telling her in the worst possible Russian to fuck off and never come back. You won't get that at Aurora. And as many have already mentioned, the girls are plentiful and have good-to-outstanding bodies. In my three times, I didn't see any gorgeous dancers there (supposed I'm jaded after my decade of living in Moscow), but the waitresses and hostesses are to die for.

Bordo, on the other hand, seemed to me to have better looking girls. Granted, I only went there once and quite a long time ago. It is, without a doubt, cozier than Aurora. And I like cozy. But the drink prices were simply ridiculous. Again, this was nearly a year ago, but Russian draft beer was going for a ruble per gram. I think Cafe Pushkin sells suds for less. Service was adequate, but the girls were pushing for sex at every opportunity, and I don't do that in such establishments. There are far too many gorgeous, high-end escorts to be had in the 4K-6K/hr range (in the comfort of my own bedroom) to spend 10K/hr for a dancer in the backroom of a strip club. At least that's my opinion - take it for what it's worth.

I visited Night Flight after a looong business dinner last Wednesday at around 2am. Place was almost empty. Only a bunch of customers and around 20 girls all in the range of 6-8. I've actually been there - as part of a Golden Ring tour. The Resurrection Church there is one of the most beautiful in Russia. I did try to follow the train routes, to see where they transit to, and they don't seem to transit to anywhere. The same netto income in WE is between 1.700-2.500 € both usually for 36 hours a week.

Girls making low class works, or studying, normally rent a flat an live there in 3-5 to share the cost: usually 400-500 USD a month very far from the centre... usually in suburb cities (dormitories like Zelenograd) 1,5 hours ride with the efficent soviet era transports (i'm not joking!). hey fellow mongers,
there has been much written about gypsy cabs and security in general in moscow. i want to share a data point and to raise a warning about the potential danger of using gypsy cabs in moscow. just to clarify, the gypsy cabs i am referring to are the privately owned cabs whom cruise streets of moscow looking for clients to drive around town at the wave of a hand. it's normally and affordable and efficient way to get around an otherwise very expensive city.

the ex-girlfriend of an expat friend of mine was coming home from a popular night club a few weeks ago. sure she was drunk, like many party girls, when she left the club but not falling down. she has used gypsy cabs countless times without incident so there was no reason to believe she was in any danger. she walked out to the street to flag down a cab but before she could even get her hand out, a fairly nice bmw or audi pulls over and the driver offers her a ride. naturally, despite the well groomed caucasian (from caucasus) driver, a ride home in a nice german car was much more attractive than a stinky broken down lada.

on the way home the conversation was light and when she asked him to pull over at a kiosk so she could buy some water, he jumped out and offered to buy her some as he wanted to pick up some beer. he returned to the car and went through the motions of removing the cap and handing her a nice cool bottle of water while he put the car and gear and they drove off.

that was her last memory until she woke up several hours later on a park bench in a strange park of town. her cell phone was gone. her purse was empty, her wallet was gone. and while her clothes were more of less intact, she knew that she had been raped.

she went to the police and while being sympathetic, they explained that this sort of thing is happening with increasing frequency. gypsy cab guys are drugging unsuspecting well dressed targets and rolling them. but it did not stop there. later that day she went online and was shocked to discover that during the course of the trip she (they) had withdrawn over $3500 in debit card withdrawals and cash advances.

this is not a working girl. she's a very attractive and well educated and sophisticated lady and while i must admit i am trying to "jump her bones" she's still a friend and hearing about her unfortunate experience makes me sick.

as more time passes, she has flashbacks and faint recollections of trying to push him off her. she remembers trying to fight back but her limbs were powerless. she was responsive to suggestions and even thinks she may have even typed in her pin codes herself at the bankomats. either that or she was compliant in repeating her pin. apparently there are several "date [CodeWord123] (http://isgprohibitedwords.info?CodeWord=CodeWord123)" drugs that will render you totally compliant to suggestion and often powerless to fight back.

this could happen to anyone. male or female.

do not get in a cab that stops and offers you a ride. get out on the street and wave one down. sure the same thing could happen, but you are much likely to be a victim if you are the one selecting the driver. one who stops and offers is probably selecting you because of the way you are dressed, your age, gender, etc. this warning also applies to the guys at the airport. if they are choosing you, it's probably not random.

these guys are predators and they are watching you. be careful guys.

It seems to me this kid of incident has been reported on before: someone accepted something to drink from a cab driver and was lucky to survive the experience.

It will be tough to get around Moscow without using gypsy cabs. It seems to me the more important warning is not to accept any kind of food or drink from strangers, particularly gypsy cab drivers. And bartenders at Hot Dog's!

And, yes, if someone pulls over and targets you for a pick-up, then probably best to look elsewhere and flag down your own ride. But I can't imagine how you would get around town without gypsy cabs, particularly after midnight.

I know may be I’m speaking like an old soviet style guy but…. There are lots of advices here. I must say I am going to Moscow since it was the heard of Soviet Union so maybe I know something!

Let’s start from the end :D

AIRPORT
The gipsy taxi (usually with fake ID’s) knows well that you have all your belongings with you when you arrive at the airport: cash, camera, clothes, luggage, may be a PC and most of all passport and Credit Cards.

The way in avoiding any hassle is very very simple. Reserve a transfer from/to the airport from a major agency. Both Intourist and Akademservice (reliable agencies) have booths at SVO and DME or can be contacted by phone, service is reliable (30-60 USD), always on time (they have hundreds of drivers) and 100% safe. You do not even pay the driver, you pay the company and even get the invoice. Normally you get the driver at the booth escorting you to the car, otherwise when they pick you up at the hotel they usually communicate the plate and the car type!

CITY
The safest and fastest way to get around is, by far, the metro! Learn some Cyrillic and use it, but it closes at 1.30 a.m. (but opens again at 5.30 a.m. ;) for those who are real late!

Getting a long taxi ride in the middle of the night might be problematic in real safety. As Jake says might that gipsy taxi are only old/cheap cars! May be a Lada or a old Opel imported used from Germany 10 years ago… no BMW, Mercedes, Audi or Lexus! Avoid lifts!

The best ways (some time used but a little bit expensive) are three.

1) When you get out of your hotel ask for the number of the hotel taxi service… (they all have one, or with the name of the hotel and/or well identifiable like taxis, usually some times new Volgas, or medium sized European or Japanese cars. Kempinski has a Maybach!) I’ts expensive, usually a start rate at 500/800 RUR but totally safe.
2) If you speak acceptable Russian you can just phone a taxi company, and they will answer usually with the plate number of the car the time and the price. Sometime you will get the plate number by SMS. The taxi companies in Moscow are hundreds (legal and safe ones).
3) Hire a private driver (lists on Moscow Times or on several internet sites). Thre are still drivers with own old Ladas you can hire for approx. 20 USD/hour, just tell him by phone that you will be out of the bar, restaurant, club at around 2.30 a.m. the guy will wait to 3.30 no problem.

The last is my favorite method and I use always the same guy so… easy to recognize. But in 90% I use the metro.

PAPERS

By the way in Moscow now all that’s expencive is payable with a Credit Card (apart girls! No card strip in the pussy! :p :p ) so practically you need to limit the sum you can take out from an ATM. My cards are all limited to 250 € (or closer equivalent) per day of cash, when mongering I take some cash with me too…

If you need for some reason some more cash there is always the “Old Method” go to a bank with your passport, card and ask for an advance… take some minutes but it’s much safer!

By the way one of the most searched items is your Passport with visa. It might be used before you are even at the police! So the safe way is. Leave the passport at the hotel, get with you a copy of the passport, a copy of the visa page, the copy of the number issued from OVIR, your national ID card or your driving licence and a proof that you are in that hotel.

In Russia it should be mandatory to carry your passport always, but I have been stopped some times by the police, both in car both walking with no passport and this papers, just checking and saying nothing. In the worst case they could fine you some hundred roubles… (of course for huge shopping or other things you might need the passport for using the credit card!).

Best to stay away from Night Flight and Hot Dog's, they are a complete waste of time and money. Time was when there were some hot women in there, for reasonable prices, but those days are long gone and they're not coming back.

I know this is a pretty silly question as it depends of many many variables, but is it possible to "survive" in Moscow with a daily budget of +/- 200 us$ ? (+ apartment)

By surviving I mean using metro during daytime, having light local lunch, 2/3 dates each day in nice cafes, dinners with drinks for two in georgian or russian mid-level restaurants, alternation of cosy evenings at apartment with GFs, cool nights out in unpretentious live-music bars and serious clubbing at mid-level clubs (with always important volume drinks for self and GF or potential target), taxis at night, and possibly joining a gym. No P4P or expat pick-up bars on my agenda. Some occasional visits to strip bars though, but just for a few beers, drinks for girls, some lap-dancing ... and eye candy!

Also do apartments rental companies usually negociate significant discounts for a long stay, something like 2500-3000 $/month ?

Regarding rental prices, indeed $2200-2500 is Tverskaya/Pushkinskaya or equivalent, 2 rooms, euroremont. One really needn't be that central for a long-term stay, as the metro connects you from just outside the garden ring to the center in 20-30 minutes.

Nonetheless, girls do love and are impressed by living on Pushkin Square for example... but it isn't a pre-requisite to fun. Besides, if you live on Pushkin Square, it is too tempting to go to Etazh, Pyramida, Goodmans etc. and spend way too much money... :)

What scares me in a stay in Moscow is that for a thirsty party-goer such as me, there must be a huge gap between the good resolutions for not spending too much money (limiting yourself to the mid-level places, going out only four times a week, never exceeding the 10 mojitos or black russians in one single place, avoiding the "after-hours", ect) and what happens in reality. Too many tempting places to party.

It really depends on "how you roll".

Keys to saving money in my opinion are the following:

1) avoid expensive restaurants. You can't escape a medium to upscale restaurant without spending $70-100, so don't go there unless you have to. Cafes or cheaper places are just as good for dates, in fact you may get more romance value out of a walk to the park or going to a movie than you would at an expensive place.

2) use special offers. As previously mentioned by Latexian2, there are numerous business lunch offers, some of them until 6pm. Good eats for less than $20.

3) use metro. Especially during the day, this is the fastest and cheapest way to travel. At night (after 11-12pm) it is usually better to take a car for various reasons.

4) avoid expensive cocktails. If you like to drink a lot, ordering $10 cocktails adds up fast.

5) once you've made contacts, schedule in some nights in. Moscow girls usually have busy, stressful schedules... and often they are very happy to have a relaxing evening at home with "simple pleasures".
