I messed around and left my house with some shoes that I have not worn in 4 years. As soon as I got out of the taxi at Bangkok airport my right shoe was speaking Spanish. I went to other stores and the prices were exorbitant. One pair of the same Skechers that I buy in the USA for $50, they wanted 25,000 birr (443 fucking dollars)! These folks must think I am a damn fool.

Just then my taxi guy said he had arrived at the hotel. I went over and he took me to a nearby shopping center. I told him I had $140 in 20's. Here is the shoe guy and the shopping center where the taxi went in to change the money. I am not sure what his cut of the exchange was because he came from 40 minutes away to take me to a place that was right up the street from me and I did not give him anything.
I messed around and left my house with some shoes that I have not worn in 4 years. As soon as I got out of the taxi at Bangkok airport my right shoe was speaking Spanish. Luckily there was some super glue in the 7 11 in the airport. Unfortunately, by the time I landed in AA my left shoe had the same problem.
I had read to make sure you have your visa before going, which I did. However, at the time I landed (5:30 am) there were only 2 people in the visa on arrival line.
I went through immigration and after found the place to get my SIM. It was $3 for 3 days of internet. I am only here 2 days so great. I gave the guy $5 and he gave me 110 birr change. He also said he could change money for me 70 birr to 1 USD. I only changed $20 because I had the black market taxi guy coming later to take me to exchange 114 birr to 1 USD.
The Lobelia Hotel shuttle picked me up and I was on my way. I had paid for the night before since I was arriving so early. I had breakfast and went to take a nap. When I woke up I asked the reception for a place that I could buy shoes. She pointed me to the nearest mall.
In the first store I saw the shoes I was looking for. They did not have my size AND the shoes were 4500 birr. Wait a damn minute. These are the same Chinese shoes I buy online in Thailand for $20! I went to other stores and the prices were exorbitant. One pair of the same Skechers that I buy in the USA for $50, they wanted 25,000 birr (443 fucking dollars)! These folks must think I am a damn fool.
I headed back out to the street walking and soon came across some guys cleaning shoes. One guy was sewing a pair. Bingo! I told dude that I would be right back. I went to the hotel to get my shoes and brought them back. He said it would be 500 birr. Deal.
Just then my taxi guy said he had arrived at the hotel. I went over and he took me to a nearby shopping center. I told him I had $140 in 20's. He called the guy and after hemming and hawing he said he would give me a rate of 110. (I had 100's, but I did not want to part with them.) Plus for only 2 days I did not think I would spend much more than $100. I decided to give him only $120 (6 20's). He ran out to where ever and came back with a big bankroll. How am I supposed to count all this shit in the car? I did the best I could and with the rate, I was not too picky. He took me back to the hotel and I put the money up and headed to pick up my shoes. He was not finished. I sat there and waited. After sewing, he cleaned them and I was good to go.

Taco.Paying $50 in this country is really expensive. Using the black market exchange rate you can quite literally double your money so even if the girl quotes an inflated price of $50 that would mean roughly $25 if you exchanged your dollar at the black market rate.

The changes in the city in the last 6 months though are more than I have seen over these years.
They are cleaning the city up in all areas - "modernisation" - and in doing so have removed all character (and history) that was before.
