If you like beach and want to be near Help and stuff, yes.

Cheaper, and walking distance to cheap great sex from US$ 5 per pop and up. Also note that downtown rio is usually quite safe during the day and quite unsafe at night.

Very handy for Carnaval Sambodrome and 20yds from 1R a minute and a few hundred yards from Lapa is a hotel off Tiradentes near Carioca station. It's opposite the Ibis hotel (which is also good, girl friendly, but nearer normal prices). The rooms are not that bright or lovely but it was only 40R a night last time I looked. Big old building, it's just called Rio Hotel or something. If you go to Ibis and don't want to pay their rates then this dive will probably have rooms even at this time of year. As Braz.Sp says. not for beginners. You want to know your way around before staying in Centro. Oh, and they don't speak any English at all. (Ibis does). There's also a place next to Ibis that is just as new and sparkly but fractionally cheaper. You can't miss these three places - just go to Rua Carioca and they're on the left as you get to Tiradentes Square.

The other side of the square is home to some open air bars and probably the smelliest *****s I've ever seen in my life.

There's cheaper places in Centro north of Pres.Vargas but I haven't been inside them. This is at least a big solid place.

If you carry on along Carioca towards the park and just beyond as well, there's a lot of reasonably priced guest houses. Some of them have a 'family hotel' policy though so check first. Some you could rent by the hour. The ones in between I suppose would be the most attractive. Buses to VM from here, only a few stops, plus all the cheapo Centro shops, and even a nice park to go jogging in and watch the cats and peacocks sunning and the hobos sleeping.

Casarao is also almost adjacent to Tiradentes and you can get a very nice girl there at times for just a little more than the 1R a minute places opposite. The adult cinema does strip shows and bj's in your lap as you watch but as the trannies mix with the girls in the dark there I've never taken the offer.

I would be worried about staying at Tiradentes, a very iffy and kind of unsafe area at night. That is why the hotels are so cheap. Of course, if you have business right there, like the sambodrome, or you really know what you are doing, go ahead.

Cinelandia area with Rua Senador Dantas, Rua Alvaro Alvim, Alcindo Guanabara etc are a little safer. There are a few hotels there, but not so rock bottom prices. But I think for 60 or so you might find something (just a guess)

the more interesting question is why some beautiful girls work at R$ 20 dives.

Some of them could work at Centaurus, lots of them could work at so why on earth do they work for half their share of R$ 20? (or half of R$ 70 at nicer executive massage parlors)

Two answers to that questions:
* the girls don't know better. karlamodels.net and cheap brothels advertise in newspapers, looking for sex workers. Termas don't

* Cheap termas tend to open at daytime. 9 am to 7pm or so. Fairly easy to tell mom you work in a store or in an office. Try to explain why you work from 10 pm to 6 am. There are not too many night shift jobs around you can deceive your family with.
