I too just returned yesterday from my 4 day jaunt down to Cali. I will post a detailed report in a little bit when I get some time. While I have been to Buenos Aires 3 times since September I really knew nothing about Colombia. While I still don't know a whole lot I can tell you this, the Colombian women were some of the most beautiful women I have ever laid my eyes upon. I'll give you a first timers take on Cali probably later tonight but I felt compelled at this time to respond.
-
Hey guys,
I totally agree with zippy and slick about comparing colombian chicas with american females, even here in the states colombian girls had a reputation for been beautiful, especially in houston men I've seen some girls that stop traffic and come to find out there colombian girls living in houston from cali.
I have nothing against american women some of them are beautiful it really has to do with attitude, most american women that I've encounter don't have a positive attitude toward men in general don't know why thats not the case for latinas. oh well thats my two cents.... I'm glad to here from guys that really enjoy cali, maybe if we can keep low key, it won't turn into rio, BA, costa rica, or panama I hope it never does.

This report is simply meant to be a first time Cali visitors impression. After only 4 days in the city and [CodeWord140] poor command of the spanish language, I believe I merely scratched the surface of what this town has to offer. Others on this board will have a lot more to offer in terms of advice, but here goes anyway...
Panama, I really don't think this post or anything we say can ever turn Cali into a hot tourist destination but maybe a little larger influx of capitol spending from some of the more adventurous mongers may help keep those beautiful Calenas at home rather than having to run off to Panama and the like. Actually from having met many of my Buenos Aires board bretheren I don't think you would be too offended by thier arrival. Avery classy group of professionals if I say so myself. I will keep my post as honest as possible.
It was with an overwhelming sense of excitement and fear that I boarded AA 920 out of Miami last Thursday afternoon. My imagination was working overtime conjuring up visions of the oft rumoured Calena vixen interspersed with myself being held captive in a rebel guerilla camp. With no time to plan and little knowledge of the city I didn't know whether I was heading for the candy store or the shooting gallery. The fact the plane was only about 1/3 full made me question again my Memorial Day Weekend choice of destinations. Oh yeah, the commercials for the new documentary about the capture of Pablo Escobar, which played numerous times on the airport TV, did little to ease my sense of apprehension. When these ads did play, I did sense some looks of disgust from the obvious Colombian passengers. Much akin to the look us Italians would give when endless stories of the mafia are aired. I guess its tough to shake the worlds misguided impressions when all they see and hear is of the worst a country has to offer. And with that I was off.
After reading several of the past posts on this board I had decided upon the Dann Carlton as my choice of lodgings. Through the Dann website I emailed my reservation request and heard back shortly thereafter from the corporate VP that an agent would be getting back to me shortly about my plans. Well at least thats what I thought it said but as I already mentioned, my espanol es muy malo. With no time left to wait for a response I headed off knowing my confirming reservation and airport pickup request was a mere formality and the email would be recieved in my absence.
The flight was great. One movie and an episode of Everyone loves Raymond and we were starting our descent. Much more pleasurable than the 8 1/2 hours from hell I was used to with my trips to Buenos Aires. And the stewardesses, who I percieved to be Colombianas, were very nice and cute to boot
Nice landing and short taxi to the terminal and were here. Hmmm, its was about 9pm, since we left late, and the airport here seems pretty much deserted. One other small jet on the tarmac and us. Very dark outside and the terminal itself, empty and not well lit. But then as I say my goodbyes and step out the door of the plane its my first Calena who looks me square in the eyes, smiles and says "buenas". I soon learned that this was the typical Colombian greeting, no matter whether it was dias or noche.
Off to immigration we march to where a single file line forms. It was here that I was glad the plane was 2/3 empty since the line moved very slowly and of course I was near the end. I reach the desk and when I tell him I'm American he takes my passport into the back but returned a few minutes later. What was that all about I wondered, but with the armed guards watching me closely I just continued on to the tax exempt desk(?) and down to baggage claim. In Baggage claim the National Police were out in force and I was told to go to numero cuatro for inspection. I was told to open my bag, but what the heck, so was everyone else. They did not ask me to open my camera bag and more importantly my accessories kit. For it was there amongst the copious volume of condoms that the true purpose of my visit existed. Zipper back up the bag and out the door.
Outside there were people waiting for arrivals but a short distance beyond, the darkness loomed. 2 more cute Calenas look me direct in the eye and smile. I could get used to this I thought to myself. Okay, so where is the driver from the hotel holding the sign with my name. Short walk back and forth to the edge of darkness confirmed in my mind that maybe I should have waited for my confirming email. Oh well, I can just stand here looking more and more like the lost tourist or I can hop in that cab, act like I know what I'm doing, and hope for the best. So I hopped and hoped.
We were off into the darkness. Windows open, no a/c, and dashboard lights that continually faded to darkness despite the drivers best efforts at keeping them illuminated. The road to Cali is a dark one my friends. With each car coming up behind us flashing his lights, I didn't know whether the signal was to move over because we were going too slow or the drivers friends had arrived and I was the next statistic. Driving along with no street lights there was not much to see, but there was a smell that lingered in the air. Can't quite put my finger on it but it seemed to be a cross between barbequeing meats and the sweet pungent aroma of rotting fruits and garbage. After about 15 minutes in the dark we clearly were approaching civilization and the edges of the city. Now I could see more, but this city is not all that well lit either. To give you an example, it seemed to me that the tallest building in Cali was a rather tall building with 3 crosses brightly lit on top. And as it turned out, right across from my hotel. Now you frequent visitors to Cali know that there is no tall building with 3 crosses on top, but a first timer like me had to wait for the sun to rise before I realized, after looking out my hotel window, that it was a mountain on which the crosses were perched, and not a building. For my friends from the Argentina board, I knew I wasn't in Recoleta anymore Toto.
There truly is no comparison between the cities of Cali and Buenos Aires with the exception that they both have a lot of taxis and beautiful women. To compare the two is to like compare the Salsa with the Tango. Steamy, hot, and sexy or do you like smooth, suave and sophisticated. I personally like both and appreciate the differences.
So I arrive at the Dann Carlton knowing in the back of my mind that since there was not a car waiting at the airport, there probably was not a room waiting at the front desk either. Nice hotel. Well, at least the lobby was nice, since as you may have already guessed I didn't get to see the rooms since there was no reservation and no rooms available. Between prayers that I wouldn't be sleeping in the park across the street on the banks of the river Cali, the front desk man graciously called the Intercontinental for me and got me a room. And the rate he got me was about 30 dollars cheaper than the best rate for the same room on the internet. So if you have a friend in Cali, have him call and make your reservation. The english speaking bellboy walked me across the street and with the money I was saving I got a suite at the Inter. for 90 dollars a night. Breakfast included. Nice hotel, nice pool, and a very nice suite. As an aside, breakfast was great. Between the 11 different fresh squeezed juices, buffet of eggs, melted queso, fruits, breads, carne, and ohh those continuous refills of fresh Colombian cafe con leche, this was my favorite meal of the day.
Continuing, went up and took a quick shower and headed back down for I didn't head this far to sleep alone. Asked the girl at the front desk where a good bar was and she went outside and found her taxi driver friend Carlos. Taxi drivers at the Inter. go thru an interview process to be allowed to pickup passengers at this hotel. Guarantees safety and a good car. Other taxis can drop you off there but only their approved drivers can gain access past security to wait for a fare. Carlos was great. Wish I spoke better spanish to converse with him. Always had a smile and since I am a big tipper he was always eager to help me with my next days travel plans. Since I was alone I always had him come in the chica bars and houses with me. Felt safer with a local and I didn't really have to twist his arm to hard. First night he knew right off what I wanted and he took me to Flores de Fresca. At least amongst the cab drivers, this was the best spot for girls in Cali. I don't know because my explorations were limited but I can say I was truly impressed by the quality of the girls. Damn were they sexy in their low slung hip hugger jeans and bare middriffs. I believe actually that this clothing ensemble is the official uniform in Cali for all girls 13 thru 30. Guys from the BA board, this scene is vastly different than the clubs surrounding Recoleta, but since its getting late I think I will sign off now and continue with my first Cali Chica adventure tommorow.
BUENAS everyone

I was in Cali last year for 5 weeks. The most active place at night is La Zona Rosa. In fact, I think every city in Colombia has a tourst section called La Zona Rosa. The bar owner or manager will flag down a girl if you ask him to. Although I was rolled twice, once at gunpoint, I did have a good time. Spanish is easy to learn and Colombian women are the most beautiful of all latin women; I believe even more so than in Brazil. But, not everything is as it appears. Colombia is the capital of the marriage agency. Since night time is so dangerous, the best way to meet someone is through an agency. The foreigner pays. She does not. The biggest one going is the meetings held at Hotel Incontinental. Its $1,000 plus for the dumbest of men but the veterans will sit in the lobbie. After 5 weeks, a Colombian city can get boring because you are so limited where you can travel because of the extreme danger there. I couldn't even get a cabbie to take me to the country in fear he would loose his cab to an attacker. The best looking women seemed to come from Medallin.

Gidday board,
Nice report so far SLICK1, looking forward to your further reports.

slick1, can't wait for you to finish your report. Having visited Cali once before, in 1999, it will interesting to hear current impressions. Just for your information, 'buenas' or 'muy buenas' without any addition of dia, noche, etc, is quite common in lots of places in Latin America right now, just like 'porfa" instead of the complete 'por favor' is as well, as a slang term, not in formal conversation. Will be watching for the rest of your story...

Cali, part 2
Just got back from my local tapas bar. Had to get a small dose of Latina to get me thru the day. One cute Colombiana works there but alas I sense she has already become somewhat Americanized. Please excuse the rest of the report as it will probably be influenced to some degree by the pitcher of sangria I just finished.
Ok, so where did I leave off. Allright , Carlos and I just arrived at Flores de fresca. Not far from the Hotel Intercontinental but if you don't know the scene , you will never find it. Believe me, Cali is dark. Passed some streetwalkers on the way, along the river, but Carlos tells me these are transvestis. I'll take his word for it.
We pull into a dark gravely driveway and park the cab. Flores appears to be a 2 story house with no telltale signs from the outside that this is a club. There are several guys at the archway, which passes as the entrance, and they say it is 15000 pesos to get in. I guess that is @ 5-7 dollars depending on the exchange rate. The hotel was giving 2500 pesos to the dollar even though the official rate was probably more like 2900. I pay for the 2 of us to get in and we head thru the door. But first we are frisked. This was the first of about 20 times I was frisked on this trip, that is if you don't count the chicas ! Actually, my 2nd time at Flores the lights came up and 4 members of the Nacional Police came in and frisked everyone and searched behind and under all the seats for weapons. After seeing these hot chicas, I hoped what I was toting in my underwear would not be mistaken for a 357 magnum.
Well back to the trip. Up about a flight of stairs we come to a rooom with a stage in the middle and a good amount of Colombian guys seated around the perimeter of the room. This is not Madahos my fellow BA mongers but rather, not much more than the barebone minimum in decor. There is a low platform rectangular stage in the middle but not much else. Well except for the 30 or so beautiful chicas dancing in their low slung hip huggers and halter tops. Wow ! These girls are hot. And I thought the Brazileras had the market cornered on great asses. They can also gyrate those hips like I have never seen before. I think I am the only gringo in the joint, but who cares. Several of the more aggressive girls start to vie for my attention and I realized it would not be an easy choice. After a few songs of dancing with the hip huggers and halters, the jeans all come off. Several minutes later and the tops vanish as well. Hot, Hot, Hot!!!
And then, they are gone. Don't despair my friends for it is not the end but merely time for the lesbian show. Now I witnessed the lesbi show at Nuevo Estilo in BA. Amatuers pure amatuers, but aqui, strap on central here we cum. The way these girls pounded away made me somewhat envious of their skills. After its was over they will ask for a tip, but 1-2000 pesos should easily suffice. If you are not seated with a good vantage point initially, do not despair because these girls will move to all parts of the stage to insure all get a good look. I was told later on from my chica friend that all the girls are required to perform the lesbi show but there are only 2 a night. It is up to the management which 2 girls get picked to perform. Along with the lesbis, there are 1 or 2 other girls that do perform a striptease but it pales in comparison. By the way, this is the only place that I ever payed a cover charge in Cali, but I was told that this is the only place that puts on a show.
So, it was not long before Valentina started to put the moves on and park herself in the seat next to me. She was hot, but I felt like she was a little too agressive. Besides I was not yet ready to choose. I also don't really remember what the prices were that they were quoting, but this is the most expensive club in Cali as far as i am aware. I get the feeling they specialize in gringo pricing, but my chica says the Colombians pay the same price. They do have rooms on premises and I think the price for an hour with a girl is somewhere between 100,000-200,000 pesos. Don't hold me to this as I never did use the rooms there. One thing I liked over BA is that the scene starts much earlier here and the clubs close at 2 am. Many of the girls will tell you to wait until 2 and you will not have to pay the barfine which at Flores was 70,000 pesos the time I took my girl out.
After about 1 1/2 hours Carlos and I left. I think Carlos thought that I felt the prices were too steep, but rather I merely wanted to see a little more of the Cali scene. We went to a place fairly close to Flores but I don't know the name. Looked like a little house from the outside with I believe a sphinx painted on the wall over the entrance. Inside it was pretty grungy but they had about 30 girls. Once you sit down the word goes out and one by one the girls come up to you and either kiss your cheek or shake your hand and introduce themselves. Since I was tired I knew I should choose and when I saw a beautiful butt across the room in a little bikini, I selected. She was a 19 year old sweet little girl whose name I do not remember. 80,000 pesos for the whole night with 40,000 as the barfine. What was that, about 27 dollars for a night of sex with a cute 19 year old. She was very nice and sweet and we had a good time. She left early the next morning and I went down for breakfast. Hey the sex was good but you don't want to miss breakfast. Did I mention the Cafe con Leche.
You know, it is late and the Sangria really is clouding my senses. I will finish this report manana. Adios

Awesome reports Slick!! I'm sorry we didn't meet when I was in BA during April!! Now I'm itching to go to Cali!! Hey, did you get the impression that lighter skinned gringos (like me and Jackson) are more at risk in Cali? Maybe I can meet you down there one of these days!! All the best, HAPPY.
-
Happy
Except for a little bit of a tan, I myself am a light skin gringo. In no way do I believe the locals ever mistook me for one of thier own. Judging by the sizeable police and army presence in Cali, I have to believe they are there for a reason and that everyone is at risk. From what I hear it is the wealthier Colombians most at risk. I don't know if this is true but I was told that only one American was ever abducted and was set free the next day. The dangers are real, but likewise if you make the wrong turn in Miami or Newark the same dangers exist. I always took precautions, but I really never felt threatened. I really enjoyed the Colombian people and felt that although they may appear a little rougher with their darker features, they may have been even more hospitable and friendly than the portenos. Actually I just purchased the complete Pimsleur language set because I really felt like I was missing out by not being able to converse on a higher level with these people.
For safety purposes I believe it is probably always better to travel in numbers. I was alone but I made a quick friend in Carlos my driver and brought him in every club with me. If our schedules coincide, I would be glad to meet you down there. I was actually even considering returning around the July 4th weekend. That should give Carlos enough time to put together a whole bevy of beauties.
I'll continue my Cali report tonight.

Oh I forgot to mention that I checked my bank statement today online and confirmed that it is much more economical to just get your money out of the many ATMs in Cali. I did not see many cambios like in BA and did change my first 100 US at the hotel for 2500 pesos. This is about a 14 dollar penalty from the exchange rate thru the ATM use. Plenty of banks and ATMs in Cali including Citibank. Although there was a 200,000 limit at Citibank you simply had to just punch in your transaction several times in succession until you had what you needed. Plus its probably better to not carry a lot of cash and just get it when you need it. They say though to carry enough to satisfy any would be robber.

Hi SLICK1,
Aussie Greg here:
I'll be in Cali from the 13 June to 5 August or there abouts, might go to San Angres for a week or two with a beautifull calena but most of the time I'll be in Cali.
If you would like to meet up and go for a beer, thats no problem. I will not have a cellphone there but can give you my taxi drivers number, he will know where I'm at.
All the best,
Aussie Greg.

Cali part 3
As a point of clarification, when I refered in my last post to the darker feature of the Colombians making them appear rougher I was refering to the jet black hair and brows on the men. As well they also tend to look at you with a rather stern look as if you don't belong. I found however that a mere hello or Hola in most every case usually brought about a smile and a handshake. Simply taking the small step of breaking the ice truly revealed a very warm and hospitable people. By the way that same jet black hair and well trimmed brow on the ladies is truly what adds to the stunning beauty of many of these women. The ladies told me that they go to great lengths to always look good which includes trips to the beauty salon just about every other day for styling and manicures.Vanity is a virtue. They say there usually are just as many men getting worked on. You will notice an unusually large number of Estetica centers where everything from liposuction to teeth whitening occurs. If you have time for a little body work, Colombia might be the bargain you are looking for. It appears the women go to great lengths there to look good and it shows. While the jet black mane is incredible the women use these centers religiously to bleach that same hair on the rest of their bodies or laser it off completely. I guess you can tell I'm a bit smitten with these Calenas.
After my initial night with my 19 year old friend whose name I now remember as being Adrianna, I ate and headed out to the pool chaizes for some R&R. A few fresh squeezed Limonades and agua puras later and I was feeling much more hydrated and refreshed. Although I only laid in the sun , well actually the clouds, for several hours I did manage to get quite sunburned. Be wary of the sun here for it is strong. Of those 3 hours there really only was about 30 minutes of sun and I had a bit of a base tan to boot.
After my rest I went to the spa for a massage. 22,000 pesos for a great 1 hour massage that really hit the spot. Yes, it was a legitimate massage. Next time I think I'll hit the Esteticas for some rejuvenation work. After my massage I headed to Chippechappe. This is the mall that everyone goes to for some social interaction because it didn't seem like anyone was buying anything. Lots of outdoor stands to eat and drink and peoplewatch, for that is the true highlight of a trip to Chippechappe. Friday was not the best day but Saturday when the chicas are off work, there truly were some incredible sights to behold. Lots of staring opportunity here my friends. What really got me was the way many of the girls would stare even when they are on the arm of a man. These girls are not afraid to look you in the eye and give you the onceover. Since I was there with a girl on saturday I did not test the market but it doesn't look to difficult to meet some hot prospects.
Friday night my man Carlos showed up right on time and rang my room to let me know he was downstairs. Off to a very good steak dinner at Las dos Parillas which I believe was on Avenida Sexta. There is also a seafood restaurant attached which is also very good. Took my date there the following evening for langostinos. Both meals were excellant and I highly recommend both for food and service. Though I didn't have time to really compare many restaurants I would hazzard a guess that these were both two of the more expensive restaurants in town. The seafood was much more expensive than the Carne. My bife de chorizo was 25000 pesos or about 9 dollars for one great steak. Actually it was the bottle of champagne that doubled the bill. The seafood restaurant was about double the price of the carne side. Beautiful setting on both sides of the restaurant and if you want to take a girl to a very nice spot I don't think she'll be disappointed with either.
After the great meal it was back to Flores. Much the same ladies but probably less men on Fri. night. Had an absolute knockout sitting next to me at my table, 5'8", 19 or 20 years old,jet black hair, gorgeous face and body, and yet I couldn't take my eyes off the cute little blonde dancing on stage with the most beautiful smile I have ever seen. I found that when you have a girl with you at the table you still are fair game for all the other chicas until you actually head out the door with a girl. It seems to me that the girls actually turn up the powers of sexual persuasion a notch in an all out effort to lure you away from the girl at hand. And I must tell you it works. This little blonde vixen stole me right out of the arms of a perfect ten. Something about that smile I guess.
It was only about 11pm and I didn't want to wait till closing for my chica so I paid a 70,000 barfine and off we went. Great thing I saw with Cali as opposed to BA is that things get going much earlier here and the clubs close at 2:00 as opposed to 5:00 in BA. Many of the girls will tell you to wait until 2:00 and when the clubs close they will meet you and you won't have to pay the club. The other alternative is to use the rooms in the clubs, which I did not as I was quite content with the superior air conditioning in my suite. Thats another thing, dress light because AC is not that good or non existant. Cali has a fantastic climate however and I don't think it ever gets too bad.
Took my sweet little girl and off we went. I had a great time and the sex was great. I guess this is what you would refer to as the ultimate girlfriend experience but I don't think I ever had a girlfriend that was this good. I'm not one for really getting into the details of my sexual encounters but believe me from my first 2 girls in Colombia these girls know how to please a man. And it seems like they enjoy doing so. Since I had such a great time I told her to come by tommorrow and we would have lunch at around 1. She gave me her # and she took down the one at my hotel. She beat me to the call the following day and asked me if I planned to call. I truly did, but since I was not sure what time she got up I decided to wait. Anyway she came over and we had lunch at the pizzeria in the hotel. We had plans to hang by the pool but she forgot her bikini. Damn, and know what are we going to do. Oh well, we were forced to proceed to Plan B and make do by having sex all afternoon in my room. This included a great session in the jaccuzzi sized bathtub. Actually we alternated in and out of the tub a couple times until she left to go get ready for our night on the town.
After she left I got my daily evening call from my buddy Carlos to let me know he was here. I went down to talk and told him about my girl and that she was coming to meet me for dinner at 8 and that the 2 of us were going to go solo tonight. He seemed a bit disappointed but I said if he was around he could take us to the restaurant. 8:00 came and I went down to meet my girl. Saw her arrive in a cab looking absolutely doll like. I looked around for Carlos and did not see him so I just hopped into her cab. Gave her a kiss and I told her I was looking for Carlos. At that moment the driver turned around and lo and behold it was Carlos with a big smile on his face. He had actually gone to pick up my date and bring her to the hotel. We got to the Seafood restaurant, I think it was called something like Las girasoles, but I may be wrong. This time Carlos waited in the taxi and my date and I had a wonderful romantic dinner.
After dinner we got in the taxi and Carlos took off to destination unknown. We were about 15 or 20 minutes outside of the hotel zone in an area that made me really wonder if we were heading into rebel territory. All of a sudden we traverse a small bridge and we are in the land of the Salsa Clubs, Juanchito I believe it is called. Down the road another mile and it is Club Chango for us. This place was really happening. It is a large club with 2 big circular dance floors with tiered booth seating around the dance floors. Instead of individual drinks the thing in Cali is to buy the whole bottle and the waiter will set you up with the ice and mixes. Vodka y naranja for us. The girls here love to dance and I must say I really enjoyed watching them dance. I took a couple spins with my date but like my spanish language difficulties I am not all that proficient in salsa either. But that doesn't mean I can't truly appreciate those that are.My girl was hot, but so were most of the other female patrons. A veritable smorgasbord of sexy latinas. I don't know how a single male would do here because it did appear that most of the girls were on a date although there were a few tables of just girls. Maybe it depends on the day of the week. Naturally Salsa at the Club Chango had to be followed up with more Sexa at the Hotel Intercontinental.
I may have missed a day but I think you all get the flavor of my stay in Cali. Oh yeah one thing I forgot. On 1 free afternoon I did head over to one of those marriage agencias to see what the deal was. Since it was Sunday the regular help was not in but met a couple of nice guys who were using the service. I was pretty much curious to see if these truly were marriage agencies or another alternative to the casas or Flores for getting set up with chicas for fun. I still don't know the answer but I don't see why you would need them in Cali. To each his own but I would stick to the regular avenues.
My last evening was spent once again with my little lady. Carlos came by and we both went to pick her up. Went out for some fruitsalad con helado and then a drive to an area that looks out over the city at night. Bad thing with Cali is that the departing flights back to Miami are very early in the morning and they advise to get there a couple hours early, although I encountered no delays. But they do take their security seriously here so be prepared for long lines anyway.. Didn't even have time for one last breakfast buffet at the hotel and no mas Cafe con Leche. But there was Carlos, right on time whisking me back thru the darkness to Cali International. You know on the way back that darkness was not quite as daunting as it was on arrival. Cali was now much more to me than just the name of a cartel. I will return.
Buenas !

Slick,
That was a great report. Now you have me thinking of going.
Enjoy the life,
Moondog :)

Nice report, Slick. I think you really captured the flavor of this amazing city...

Buenas slick,
I'm too planning on been in cali at the beginning of july, looking forward to it, great report thats the cali that I remenber. I have a good friend that drives taxi in cali too, he knows cali inside out its a good way to really hit up the casas. I'm suprise that your taxi driver did not tell you about ESCOCIA its about two blocks from the Dann walking towards the river on the left hand side, a little touristy but men as many beauties as flores frescas remenber for next time. Another good spot for picking up caleņas is la avenida sexta, I pick up some beauties they also have some casas within the area good area for just haging out. Good report Slick maybe I'll cacth you on your next go around.
