Tungurahua...................in your steps!!
I can't give up Rio just yet, but I will be following in your footsteps. I'm making a quick 3 day trip to Quito on my way back to Rio. While I'm sure that's not enough time, I'm just trying a little taste. I figure with all your printed reports and maps, I can't go wrong. It'll be just like a trip into Centro for an afternoon of relaxation. Any advice, preach on.............

Avoid Hostal Olimpia in Quito
I was staying at Hostal Olimpia in Quito (Reina Victoria y Jose Calama) until today. For about the 3rd or 4th time they told me and my GFE when leaving to grab lunch that they had given away my room. I've spoken to the owner (Doctor) and the manager numerous times with numerous problems this time. I stayed there in the past with no problems. It's gone down the toobs.
Toilets don't work anymore. Their idea of a solution is to throw all toilet paper used in the basket.
I moved out today. The lady said it was a communication error (AGAIN) but I got tired of dealing with them. Was something daily.
Need a new place to stay.
Gotta love Quito.

Apartments, Condos, Banks
So far I have had no luck obtaining an apartment or condo in Quito. They are all requiring a Visa (Resident or Work) to rent. All are at least 1 year and many 2 years (laws here are WAYYY in the benefit of the landlord). 2 months "guarantee" on top of it. I thought I had a place the other day but the lawyer of the owner killed the deal. There are very few furnished apartments and those here are very expensive ($500-2000+ a month).
Banks are same deal. Visa required. I was hoping they were easier like CR or DR but no luck.
Working on getting a Visa. It's supposed to take about a month on the fast track.
