Paying more than 250 baht at just about any time of day to get to Sukhumvit from the airport is unnecessary. Paying 500 by Thai standards is absolutely ludicrous and just furthers the impression that all farangs are walking ATM's. You get a taxi, you tell him to turn on the meter, if he doesn't, you politely tell him to stop and you get another taxi, very simple. For a very short distance nearby, you will pay 40-50 baht, for 100 baht you can pretty much go halfway across Bangkok. I take meter taxis and 99. 9% of the time the guy knows the city and gets me to the destination as fast as possible. You don't get there faster by paying more.

And by the way. 99. 9% of the girls in Insomnia are pros. You may get one for free, but they are all pros nevertheless. Happy hunting.

However as a newly arriving passenger fresh off the aeroplane this can be difficult. It's all very well telling him to stop and getting out, but you could be a few hundred metres down the freeway with your bags by then.

As has been said many times, probably the best deal is to go up to Departures and grab a cab that has just dropped a passenger. I always say '300Bht, expressway' and that gets me to my destination fine. Last time I requested 'meter', the driver was low on gas and asked if he could drive to a gas station nearby. I obviously agreed, but thought he would have the decency to turn off his meter, but this is Thailand. Couldn't be bothered to argue, but I did turn down his request for a tip at the end.

Much of the time, when not bad traffic jams, the underneath motorway is just as fast. Can end up paying 45 Baht above for a very short distance indeed. It depends which section of Suk you are heading for. If staying in very low Sois of Suk I would take the expressway. If in Sois around Phrom Pong, taking the expressway often won't help much. Give the driver a good tip instead for getting you there quickly. I have never actually experienced a bad traffic jam on the free motorway. Maybe just lucky.

You ideally should know which freeway entrances and exists are in the vicinity of your Hotel, for those occasions when traffic is bad, assuming freeway itself is not at a standstill. I sometimes have the taxi enter freeway off Rama 4 just because can get to that part quicker at the time.

To me, it is hit or miss either way.

From airport I have had them offer a flat 350-400B including tolls. A couple of times we hit bad traffic and that meter would have been 5-600 or more, since it took forever to get there.

If you want peace of mind, just make them turn on the meter.

Last time there was no traffic and it was 250 from Airport to Soi 11.

Bottom line: There are Taxi rip offs in tourist areas all over the world. None of us like it, but it is much worse in some Euro countries and even some of the US. Don't let a few bucks put you in a pissed off mood to start your trip.

Final comment. I love BKK taxi's. Great price and most are clean. I once had a driver told me to be careful with a girl because he overheard the girl's conversation in Thai on her cellphone. After I dropped her off, he said becareful, girl say very bad things, he wouldn't elaborate but I played it safe. For a cabbie to be giving me a warning. It was either not flattering or it was something that may have been planned. Not worth the risk either way but why doubt him, it's not like offered me another girl. Oh yeah, and one other story.
