Romance Latina used to be the go-to place to find freelancers, but the last two years that website has gone to shit. I would say 95% of the profiles on their are either webcam girls trying to get you to pay money to see their cam (they are the easiest to spot because they will not give your their cell phone or Whatsapp; they only give you their Skype profile), profiles of chicas who never even log into the site anymore, or fake (like one photo of a chica).

Colombian Cupid is shit as well. Lots of scammers on there who constantly get blocked by admin. One day I will see that someone has sent me an "interest". By the time I log in to look at the profile it has already been deleted by admin.

El Centro is poorer than some other areas in Medellin (Poblado); which means you have to be more careful.

I want to say that after many trips to El Centro and 8 Xs in Medellin, never been robbed, just a couple of attempts. I don't carry a wallet. Just take bare essentials, only necessary amount of money, keep a low profile, nonflashy clothes. Yes there's some shady looking types around, but for the most part never got bothered by them.

There's a TV show about a guy who travels the world looking for the finest coffee beans in the world. Last season, he was in Colombia and he gave similar safety reminders which applies to anywhere in the world.

If the taxi driver tells you that the neighborhood you want him to drive to is dangerous, it's dangerous.

If you're in a neighborhood and there are no taxis, it's dangerous.

If you see the same guys on motorcycles over and over again, you're in danger.

If you're lost, don't act like you're lost,. Walk like you belong there.

To look like you belong there, wear clothes of neutral colors like black, brown, navy or gray. Wear dark sneakers or walking shoes instead of white or bright colored sneakers. I would also avoid wearing any baseball caps or clothes with non-local team logos or wordy graphics.

When you're on the street, never talk on the phone or text while you're walking since you always want to beware of your surroundings by being aware. In the US, people are constantly getting robbed of their iPhones and other similar smart phones so don't expect anything different in Colombia.

Wear sunglasses whenever possible because it allows you to stare at people without being noticed and it gives you an aura of uncertainty.

Avoid wearing a watch unless it's a cheap, black plastic Casio or Timex watch. If it looks expensive, you're setting yourself up for a mugging or a grab and dash from your wrist.

So far, I've been fairly lucky and have never been a crime victim in Colombia. I did have my wallet pick-pocketed out of my zippered pants pocket while on a club dance floor in Phuket, Thailand and my point-and-shoot camera was pick-pocketed while on a crowded bus in Quito, Ecuador.

Don't wear shorts. They are a dead giveaway that you are a foreigner. Sorry I know they are comfortable but local guys DON'T wear shorts period. The streets are opening up again and people have exercised. Just know where you're going -- if you go to periodista its fine, just remember that if you look like a foreigner peple will assume you have money and want to share anything that you may have.

It's a total myth that Colombians don't wear shorts. Its very common in Medellin when the weather is hot as it is now, and also common in Cali. Just go to the high end malls in these cities and the clothing stores sell shorts. So who are they marketing to? Certainly not gringo tourists. Of course discretion is always in order. Nothing wrong with heading down to the nearest Juan Valdez on a hot afternoon in shorts and enjoying the sun. Never if you are just meeting a girl for the first time. But cool if you know her and are just out for a walk on a nice sunny day. In fact most girls that I've ever been with in Medellin or Cali enouraged me to wear shorts when it was very hot and we were spending any significant time outdoors.

Some people have very expressive face and eyes. When they're scared, it shows. There are others who have "teddy bear" faces that make them look like country bumpkins which could leave others with the impression that they are an easy target for a strong arm robbery. These are the ones who should consider wearing sunglasses. If you're in an area where you feel unsafe and vulnerable, wearing sunglasses can project a "leave me alone" message.

I only wear sunglasses to protect my old eyes from UV rays, but I have found it useful when I want to be left alone. It's a personal decision to wear one or not. If you want to approach strangers and socialize, wearing sunglasses is never a good thing.

Right on, since I have been robbed once in Rio, I made a pact with myself several rules to stay out of problems.

Do not venture outside the tourist area, if do, then travel in daylight with taxis. After sundown travel by taxi at all cost. General public transportation in the tourist frequent areas are safe in daytime.

No ipads, iphones or gps devices. I use a local cheap wireless when travel.

Do not count money in public, find a stores, restaurant, bar and count in the restrooms.

Brazil and Colombia and safe when you know what to do and do not take chances. No dar papaya, indeed.

Today is the festival of flowers, most of the stores are colse and many streets are empty, I take taxi even in daylight as a precaution.

To the gentleman asking about safety in el centro.

I know walking during daytime and mixed in the crowd of el centro may give a sense of security. Just remember it also gives well organized gangs the ability to blend in. Most work in what they call "cadenas" or chains in English.

Nobody is trying to scare you from el centro! Just keep your eyes open, look around and keep an eye open for young men standing, hanging around.

I wear eyeshades but I also turn and make a point that yes "I'm watching you".

I've never been attacked in Medellin during daytime. Once I was followed, but I knew it right away cause he was just standing or talking to someone on my 1-2 o'clock. I just kept on walking but as I turn my head left and right I noticed him. He was following me on my 4 o'clock. I immediately stopped and turned my body towards him, in the middle of all the foot traffic around us. He looked away and walked backward. What was he up to? Who knows!!

That's my experience. But I also saw these cadenas at their work and they are PROFFESSIONALS. What amazed me about them is their communication. They almost alway never say a word. Not even to the victim they are robbbing. I think that makes them very effective.

Also, don't expect paisas to help you if you are attacked by a cadena. You're best hope is for them to yell and whistle to startle the silence and get cops in.

I hope others will share their personal experience with safety in Medellin and el centro.
