Payment to Mamasan vs the Girl
JJB,
Great report! I just want to ask a question.
As you had agreed to 680 RMB for the session, it was obviously an all inclusive package for FS. Why did you feel inclined to give her a nearly 50% tip? It is included in the package to "focus on your satisfaction and work hard on the second shot". A tip is not required, however, 50-100 RMB would have been plenty if you must.
Just my POV.
OAH
In places where the payment is made to mamasan or as in this case at the front desk, it is obvious that the girl gets less than 50% of what you pay.
Since the girl was very nice I decided to give her a nice tip. It was not requested, it was not required and she would be still in smiles if I haven't tipped her.
It just made me feel better and 300 RMB is really nothing in comparison of having a good feeling that the girl will be able to buy herself something nice or help her family. For me 300 RMB is a price of a couple of drinks at the bar and for her it is probably a couple days of work.
For me this is not just about mechanical sex and the girls are not some soulless robots. If it makes me feel good to give someone a little bit money why not? I don't think I contributed to the inflation of local prices since this was not negotiated up front and I gave it to her when I was leaving and she was not expecting it. She actually may be extra nice for the next white guy hoping for the same miracle. Obviously she will get disappointed but some of you may be pleasantly surprised.
Go south young men (and old) go south
And treat them well
I was inspired by the long time lurker who posted for the first time, and I'm sort of in the same boat so I thought I may as well "pay some dues" to fellow mongerers.
Especially after the crackdowns on central Shanghai, the action is moving more and more away from the downtown. I remember when at BBS's around Zhongshan Park you could get good FS for 150-200. Now, you're lucky to get a smile.
Take Line 1 past Shanghai South Station, and the scenery changes dramatically. There are entire villages out there though not too familiar with foreigners, and they seem to be enclaves. Around Jinjiang park station, when you cross the bridge (easy to spot), there's a village of BBS's and they give excellent service. When getting out of the station, take the underpass to the south side and you'll start seeing the shops. Don't pay more than 200 as that's the standard, and enjoy. Speaking at least some Chinese is a must and it's always wise to keep nice relations with the ladies and their mama/papasan's, which I guess goes without saying for that kind of action.
On the other side the station you will see a big "Metro" megamart. Stroll over in that direction and there will be 3 or 4 shops, all offering FS, though the quality of the merch varies considerably. On a sidestreet near Metro, on Pubei lu, you'll find some oil massage places with very happy ending and nice girls who will let you do pretty much anything apart from FS. They're dressed nicely and there's a line up of 8-10 at any time of day. Cost is 150 for almost an hour and they have tiny private rooms and good attitude. |Those of you who have fond memories of Peacock will feel a tinge of nostalgia before agreeing this place may be worth the trip. The girls are all from Hainan so on the smallish side but generally have good attitude and if you repeat with one the service will be much better.
The area itself is full of gems though if you're unfamiliar it may take some wandering. For me personally, the process of exploring is an art of its own, so I don't intend to give specific addresses out on the forum, though I think the mongering game is changing in Shanghai. I've never really been into the whole "TRL" scene though can see why it suits those who are here for a short time and want instant action. As the areas around the downtown get more developed, you can see more action as it's at the stage where it's not too empty (read, 40 yo girls past their prime) and also not too full so that it brings about too much attention (xjh, jing'an). Prices are generally more fair and because they get more leeway (maybe thinner hongbao to their local LE) some of them get quite creative.
So if I'm allowed, I'd like to suggest doing a bit of trailblazing, and going further south. Wait till you hit xinzhuang, though that's a whole other post, for another day.

The new bar area opening up soon
I have been by Da Tong in the day and seen the construction. Actually looks quite nice, and I love the fact that the whole thing is below ground (apparently the building was built to be a shopping mall but was never used).
Looks like about 30 to 50 bars, small restaurants, and other small stores will be there. Some are already open (very few, and soft openings I suspect). Some TRL, Julu lu, and Huashan lu owners are setting up their new outfits there.
I have also talked with the owners of Woodstock (friends of mine) and they said they are going to open a nicer version of the bar there and they want to shed the TRL ripoff image. They promised it will still be fun, just less pushy and getting rid of the trouble-making girls, and they will be adding some "new features" to make it more fun. We'll see what that means.
There's another bar in the complex which will be called "Airplane bar" - it will be a theme bar and look like the inside of an airplane (the space itself is very long and very narrow). The owners I have heard are Americans, so hopefully they'll do a good job with it.
All the stores and bars there appear to be spending more on construction and the whole place has a sort of Chinese-Vegas kinda feel to it.
So, it looks like this is going to be a new and improved TRL. Let's hope the good times will be rolling there soon, and that it's more like the good old days of Maoming lu than TRL!
Anyone else heard anything?

Btw, Da Tong is on Julu lu near Chengdu lu. It's downstairs in the park with the clear bubble thing above it ...there is some kind of Armani type club there already, and it's the huge indoor/outdoor space next to that.
