That part of what I wrote was really only mainly [B]an aside[/B] about how the value that people place on a good or service can change because of an experience they had. And that's it. You seem to keep wanting to make it about something more than that. It's not. But to answer your question, yes! As long as I can afford to pay for First Class of Business Class and still monger where I want to for as much and as long as I want to then yes. I will pay that kind of money out of my own pocket. I can, I have, and I will again in the future. But you won't see me buying at the counter though! I typically plan my travel well in advance and score good deals. There are so many good deals out there if you plan and know what you're doing (and can be flexible)! I still can't believe some of the airfare deals I've scored landing me in First Class / Business Class seats!
But even still to be totally transparent, I don't have to do that (pay with cash) every single time though because I've traveled a lot and I have a ton of miles as well (so regarding the miles I guess you can say I paid indirectly for First Class by paying to fly a lot in the first place resulting in all of those miles). Miles which I use strategically and judiciously. Sometimes I'm going to pay with cash, and sometimes I'm going to dip into my mileage balances and pay with one of those. But generally speaking yes, it's worth it to me to pay that money as long as I can afford to. And as I said. I can, I have, and I will. It wasn't always that way believe me! Like I said once before, I thought I would be stuck in back in "cattle class" forever. However, in the last near 7 years I managed to "break out" and saw my net worth explode!. There are guys here of all kinds of backgrounds and of varying economic means. Some have the coin to fly First / Business Class [B]and[/B] monger in the "Scandallos" of the world if they wish, besides going to only the lower cost destinations like "El Centro" in Medellin or "Santa Fe" in Bogota (which is also a good idea as a part of one's overall trip plan).
So, let us not assume nor generalize about that either (the level of economic means possessed by the members of this board). There are def some here who have more than me no question. I'd say, based on my years of reading here, that I'm probably in the upper middle of the range. It's not just what you've earned that matters either. Just as important is what you've managed to keep!

It is all about what one wants limited only by what one can afford. I estimate that I am likely in the upper middle to upper range of ISG'ers financially speaking too. But that does not mean I have unlimited finances. I wish I did, but I don't. So, what do I want to do with my spending money? Well, in order of importance to me:
#1. I like to travel 3 to 4 months per year and punt as often as I like (usually 1 or 2 times a day) when I am in one of my favorite countries.
#2. I want to shag the prettiest, sexiest girls available. I don't care how much they cost as long as what they are asking me is in the ballpark price range for the venue and quality of girl I am fooling around with. That means I will pay market price for a Scandallo tier 1 girl anytime I want a tier 1 Scandallo girl and I will pay market price for a clinica girl anytime I want a clinica girl and I will do any girl in between if I want her.
#3. Given I have adequate cash set aside for #1 and #2 (my highest priorities), I prefer to stay in 5* hotels and then 4* hotels. I have various hotel CC's and Gold and Platinum memberships with Marriott, Hyatt, Hilton, so I get a lot of breaks on price with these boys like free point nights and free voucher nights plus these chains usually upgrade my reservation upon check-in to Excecutive class rooms and throw in free breakfasts. For example, I stayed at the SP Hyatt for 6 nights gratis in May and they upgraded my reservation to their 1 bedroom suite. It was a great deal.
On my upcoming 6 week SP trip this fall I have booked 6 nights at the Renaissance, 5 nights at the Hyatt, and 4 nights at the Hilton all on points. That still leaves a lot of nights unaccounted for and unfortunately, SP hotel rates have gone through the roof since I was last in town and I am not willing to shell out $200 to $300 per night on a 5 star hotel room. No problem, I have made reservations at some very nice 4 star hotels for around $100 per night. There is nothing wrong with my 4 stars. In fact, the rooms are quite nice and spacious and they have balconies which comes in handy on those nights when I am entertaining one of my sexy marijuanitas or she is entertaining me. KKK. Anyway, I think I made my point. I cut back on non-necessary expenses when I have to. If money were no object, I wouldn't care what the Renaissance or the Hyatt were charging and I would stay there.
#4. Plane travel: this is where my budget really hits the fan. I can't afford to do all that I want to do with #1, and #2 without being frugal on airfare. I like 1st class and business class especially on 24 hour flights to Thailand and the PI. But I can't afford everything on my list so no 1st class or business class for me. I do have miles with the big 3 US carriers and therefore I can usually fly coach for free except that extended legroom is a necessity for me, so I always pay cash for the upgrade. BTW, I hate flying and I especially hate flying coach, but flying 1st class would mean cutting back on #1 the length of my trips or # 2 the quality or quantity of my girls which is out of the question. Ha Ha.
So, that is how I prioritize my travel expenses based on my preferences and constrained only by my finances. I never spend more than I can afford to pay off on the due date. Nobody has exactly the same preferences or the same constraints. So, we all plan differently, but we all want to have the best time that we can afford.
No, the market and inflation are not even close to that level yet. 1 k for the whole day and if they don't agree, I can find someone else at the same quality / level / whatever or even better who would agree. All of the McDonalds in Brazil are a lot fancier, cleaner, and higher end than the ones in the US. I still would never pay 40 reais for a Big Mac when its 2. 5 dollars in the US. With 40 reais, you can get a really good healthy quality meal.
I think I see what went wrong with the one on Friday and the one that you mentioned is "cold". Its not your fault or hers. Its more of the language barrier because Brazilians express themselves and communicate different in portuguese than in English. They use a lot of slangs and expressions when they speak with lots of humor while in english it's more straight forward. Many of them can speak basic english but they are like a completely different person when its in English or in Portuguese. Similar to speaking with the french, we have to be FRENCH FLUENT to have a great conversation with them or else they arent that interested. Also know that 2 days is actually a very long time. Unless you have a lot of activities aligned, the conversation will get dry very quickly.

So, we all have to make choices right? I'm not crazy about flying either, but we all have to do it, especially if we want to travel internationally. I try to be as comfortable as I can, especially on those long flights. So, I'm almost always angling for the class of air travel with the most space that I can get and afford. But where I try to cut back is on my hotels and other expenses associated with the trip. So, typically I will choose a 3-star hotel, and sometimes a 4. I never rent cars and always take the least expensive means of local transportation available for getting around as long as it's not too inconvenient (not going to inconvenience myself to save an insignificant sum). That means usually relying on public transportation and / or relatively inexpensive taxis depending on where I am. In fact, I try to make sure my hotel choices are strategically placed to allow easy access to trains, subway stations, buses, plentiful taxis, etc. (I really need to start using Uber more).
I like to enjoy an occasional nice meal here and there, but I mostly keep meals cheap and inexpensive. And all so that I can have more cash on hand to do the #2 (shag the prettiest girls per my personal tastes)! But, our posts show how we're all different, even if we might be of similar economic means. You like to go for the higher end hotels and cut back on the air travel costs. On the other hand, I cut back on the hotel quality and spend more on the air travel portion.
