Over half of the guys on that side of the country (east of the Mississippi River) that go to Sosua are either State or Federal workers. Their entire salaries are tax payer funded (hence the uproar federal workers are in about the sequester).

I've met guys in Sosua that work for CPS (Child Protective Services) , Policemen, Firefighters, US Postal Service, TSA, etc. They all joke about the fat pensions they are going to get at retirement (even though places like Detroit are about to officially declare bankruptcy).

The Fireman I met said that when one of them are up for retirement, they all take turns "getting hurt" so that they can file for medical leave/disability. The medical leave is spent in Sosua, LOL.

Reading what I just wrote leaves me to believe I'm in the wrong business (private sector = "sucker class" under the current regime).

The real attraction of the DR is that it is incredibly easy to get much more attractive short or long term girl friends than one would find at home.

I would have thought it would drive away as many people as it attracts.

Classicos, although it had / has loud music as befits a disco, has always had a superior sound system so that the music is not distorted or offensive, and they usually played a variety of popular tunes that people liked to dance to.

I must say I prefer bachata and merengue to create a Dominican ambience rather than whatever they play these days in the bars, though my personal taste in music that I listen to at home for relaxation is quite different again and not Dominican music at all.

A couple four day weekends in Tijuana in September and October Halloween weekend in San Jose. Back to Sosua for Thanksgiving weekend and then a four day weekend at FOD in December.

Boys town isn't what it used to be but there are some surprisingly pretty nice regular to semi pro chicas available at the down town bars for next to nothing, a young guy like you will probably clean up down there. It's not Sosua but there's a bit of a scene to be had down there and it helps to kill the pain and satisfy the addiction until you can return to a major monger location.

Not sure what will happen to Detroit pensioners. I would think the state of Michigan would have to take that over, but that is just a guess.

People who do these jobs choose them for whatever reason, but have to work 24 hours a day and 365 days a year when most Americans are at home relaxing. Often these jobs involve physical danger or working for many years in very unpleasant environs, such as prisons, Iraq, etc.

Usually these jobs pay lower than corporate jobs, but have deferred compensation and other benefits that put money towards retirement. Government jobs are widely available to veterans, minorities, the disabled, etc. So anyone has a chance to do government work, if they wish to.

Everyone has the freedom to choose what kind of work they do and what kind of employer they work for. It is not like you were assigned to the private sector against your will, even if you now regret it.

Since none of the states east of the Mississippi have legal prostitution, it seems entirely reasonable and ethical that government workers should travel overseas to where it IS legal if they want to pay for sex, rather than break the laws of their own states which are set by the voters and taxpayers they work for. Note that they are traveling at their own expense in their own time.

In the Dominican Republic there are huge numbers of government jobs, but the downside is that the pay is very poor. Not sure about the retirement benefits, if any. Hence it is not difficult to befriend government workers if you can help them out financially a bit.

Prostitutes in the DR are all in the private sector, as there are no government brothels.

I know a postal worker in his 60s retired in Florida who does not receive social security benefits. I was very surprised, but he told me that postal workers got the government pension instead of ss. I think when the system was changed and postal workers had to start paying in to SS, those who were already vested into the existing system were allowed to choose whether to opt into SS, so at the present time there are two tiers of post office retirees.

First they scare the living shit out of you, ask for 1 million pesos and charge you with all kinds of crazy stuff. I (and they) don't know one gringo monger that can't come up with at least $3500 to $5000 to get out of that POP kennel. They try to hand down charges push the alleged "incident" to a higher level requiring detention (by law I'm told it can be up to 1 year) until they are investigated. The only way out is to either pay up a negotiated "ransom" or get accustomed to jail / prison life in the D. R. Until they decide to let you go. Lesson: Once you're targeted with the scam, do like this man did and get someone to negotiate the payoff and get out of there. This is a planned and well orchestrated event and the girls, the chulo / pimp / etc, and the attorneys are in on the game. Once one has been there, experienced the whole scenario, it's doubtful they will come back. In my opinion as a guess, the monger in question left on his own. The officials in question wouldn't send him home, they want them to stay there in their "system" and each time he wants an answer it costs $1250 more. The guy does them no good if he leaves the country.

I have been in Sousa for the past five weeks, leaving today. Had a great time, but, got screwed by a Local Dominican, he calls himself Joey.
