Italy is an example of how quickly things can escalate. Italy was fairly lax about this coronavirus just a few weeks ago. Now in some towns it is martial law, I am told. If you are in a quarantined town and stray too far from home, you can be punished with a three month prison sentence or a fine of 206 euros ($230).

Korea vs Italy provides a good case study. Korea is a democratic society, a bit more authoritarian than Italy for sure but not like China. But the Korean response, w / o shutting down borders, is coming for a lot of praise. Death rate is less than 1%. Meanwhile, Italy's mortality rate from this virus is an astronomical 6% to 7%. Even factoring in that Italy has an aged population, their response to this so far shows Italy in an extremely unflattering light. Italy and Korea are almost at similar GDP per capita now, but Italy seems clueless how to halt this. And as this WSJ article shows, the virus first took hold in the rich northern region. When it flares up in the or south, infection and mortality rates might spike even more.

These are not good days for Italy. Economy is in shambles, and country came to a screeching halt. I hope they don't become Greece part 2.

I would guess a majority of them are poor at managing their finances, have pimp boyfriends, put it all into their houses, or a combo of these. They've been jaded by making fast money and think it'll last. If they go home for an extended period they would also have some explaining to do on how they're able to take so much time off from their "job" and they need money to stay home.

Other airlines are putting forth their own rule changes to help travelers get through this crisis, and to try to protect their own bottom lines.

After a few seconds the woman put me on hold again and told me she will talk to her supervisor. A minute later she told me with Lufthansa I have no options, they refuse to rebook because the flight to FRA was not cancelled and left on schedule. They gave me a number to call Lufthansa. I did. Another 3 hours on hold. Within 30 seconds they sent me back to expedia and blamed expedia for giving false info. Also suggested I email Lufthansa customer relations to ask for a voucher. Classic BS.

Yes I booked hotel (actually an apartment) and the host offered 100% cancellation refund as long as it was 14 days before check in. That seemed quite reasonable back in Dec 2019. But I waited too long and didn't cancel hoping to go but you know what happened. Yes I make myself look like a fool but hope others can learn from it and know what to expect and avoid.
