First Visit to Sosua limited Spanish and No Voice.
The set up:
Apologies for it being late gents but here it is.
I set everything up last minute (8 days in advance) for a trip leaving the from the USAeastern seaboard to Puerto Plata on Feb. 14, flying American airlines. Cost was $740 roundtrip with only 1 stop in Miami.
I decided to stay at Hotel New Gardens since it's directly in the middle of the Action per the Reports. So I went online googled the hotel name and found their website. It was a little pricier than some of the other hotels talked about here, however the pics of the new wing looked nice and free breakfast. So I reserved 3 nights in the new wing for $74 US per nite on line NO credit card required. They responded pretty quickly and in their response they told me they would have a driver holding my name on a card at the Airport waiting on me. In addition I would have to pay him $25. A little high for the area but, no problem on the price, it was just the research stated.
The Problem:
The next day after booking my trip I start to lose my voice. No shit, by the day of my flight I had lost 95% of my voice literally. I'm thinking damn my Spanish is already limited to next to nothing, and now I can't talk at all? But no worries I figure. I just won't wife one up due to lack of communication. No show stopper here.
The trip:
I fly into Puerto Plata have my $10 dollars ready for entry fee into the Country, see my driver Luis with my name on the card and we are off to the 3 day party. We arrive in Sosua roughly 15 min later. I asked him if he knew of where I could get a decent exchange rate close by. (Could've done it at the airport but waited) He pointed to a spot directly across the street from Hotel Terra Linda just a few 100 feet from New Gardens. I quickly checked in, walked past the pool saw a few working girls (decent – cute for me in looks) trying to wave me down, dropped my bag in the room, most of cash and I'd in the safe and went to exchange currency. I asked his exchange rate in my barely heard voice and the guy quoted me 39 pesos per $1. I had forgotten to check the exchange rate that afternoon so I asked for 42. He said he couldn't go up. So I pulled the typical gracias and walk away, he stopped me and stated 39. 5pesos per $1 US. Long story short we finished at 40. 5. I Found out the next day that my Hotel exchanged at the front desk 42 pesos per US$.
Pesos in pocket I remember the small grocery store on the way from the hotel and backtrack there for my goods. I get a case of water and a case of EL Presidentes roughly $15. Dropped them off at the hotel, then back out to the main grocery store I read about name evades me but only a 10 min walk located just before the beach. Get the remainder of my supplies lotion, baby oil for the girls and a few light snacks and a bottle opener. (Didn't see the bottle opener on the wall above the fridge in the room earlier.)
The night life:
It's still early and I forgot to clip my toenails and fingernail so I head over to a little spot directly across from Terra Linda called Salon GA. as an alternative, i'm going to list a couple or so things for short time visitors that i'd put in my little lettered pocket reference list:
1) never announce when you are going to the d. r, ;
2) always tell them (sosua girls / rats / anyone) that you are leaving a week later than your true departure date;
3) always negotiate with the girl of your choice up front;
4) if there is still a problem with service or payment, pay them, smile, let them leave happy they took advantage of you, and then never speak to them again;
5) never use a "street concierge" that will "help translate" or "find the good girls" for you;
6) never buy weed or any other drugs, as easy as it may seem, and as confident you may be "no one will find out";
7) never go with a girl that doesn't have a "cedula" and be sure to confirm the i'd is actually hers;
8) never hook up, regardless of the times they say "it's ok". with an **** girl. this is wrong, and also if you're american, illegal;
9) never give up your contact information, and furthermore i suggest you may even have a d. r, alias;
10) never send money to a chica despite your kind heart, her professed needs, or otherwise;
11) never believe that a girl that is taking money from you actually loves you."teamo, teamo, teamo". it really means nothing to them but they know it strokes your ego;
12) do not go to their house, get around their children, or involved with their family;
13) always treat them well, treat them like a lady and show them a good time and they will almost always return the favor;
14) always have a wingman, and make sure to meet and hang with some of the veterans. they can be pretty strange and quirky at times, but they know the ropes if you do find some trouble;
15) go see a dominican professional baseball game, take a chica, your wingman and another chica. the games are an incredible experience you'll never forget;
16) go there, have a nice vacation, have some fun with the girls, and go back home. as a friend of mine says, never take your vacation home with you.
this is a good start to a successful vacation.
