Hey,
I am new to the site. I thought about doing this trip about 4 or 5 years ago to Blackbeard's, but now I pulled the trigger and bought the plane ticket. This will be my 1st trip to DR. I will be staying at Blackbeard's May 21-25. Thanks for all the information on this site.
Me and my road dawg will be there, they call me dj from the 22 -25, change your money at jennys, if you are going to bring some snacks because the kitchen 11, put it in your luggage or and extra carry type bag, blackbeards no longer allows you to bring in any outside food outside of water maybe.

Dominican Cigars
I'll be visiting in June for the first time (reach out if you'll be there the 29th or 30th). I wanted to know if anyone has toured the nearby cigar factories, like Vivonte. I want to check it out, but is it worth it? Also, does BB allow you to smoke anywhere on the grounds?
Lastly, I wanted to thank all of you guys for all the information you keep putting out there. I will make sure to report when I get back.

Info
Yes they let you smoke outside anywhere on grounds except the dining table area, the cigar shop is maybe 15-20 minute drive from bb. Its decent, its by the city town tourist area.

You can NOT smoke in your room, the dining area or the bar area under the roof. You can smoke anywhere else outside around the pool, or on the balconies or porches of the rooms. If you bring outside liquor,(sneaking it in) you must have it in your big bag, as they are searching any backpacks or other misc, smaller bags now.

That policy alone would cause me not to ever book there.
Let me get this straight. You are paying for a hotel room to stay there. I would never accept that policy from any hotel I ever stayed with. Even AI resorts let you bring food in. It is routine for me to head out of the gates of the minimum security prison I am staying in. When I am hungry I always tell the taxi driver to take me to someplace they would eat. I would like to thank them for their service with a meal. I have gott the best food this way. One time I was in Jamaica and did that. The taxi driver stopped at this non-descript BBQ place by the side of the road. It was the best Jerk Chicken I had ever had. I took it back to the resort and went to the bar for a drink and the bar tender said "I see you are really enjoying my country. Very few visitors do that. " he made me this rum punch that was so good that when back home and after many experiments was able to duplicate it. Fortune favors the bold.
The only way I have ever stayed in a hotel like that is one that prevented you from bringing you own alcohol in. That was a cruise ship. And me and my travel partner would still circumvent the rules as we liked to drink and it was expensive on the ship. During one of our stops, we asked for a taxi driver to take us to a grocery store. He told us he gets that request from cruise passengers all the time. We told him that is because it is expensive to buy anything on the ship and the only thing they let you have for free is the air and to go the bathroom. He laughed and said "They have a good reason to let you do that". LOL!
I know everyone has their reasons for going to Blackbeards. But if you don't like the policy, you should let the manager know. And you should let the manager know that you are going to tell your friends you don't like the policy. Then tell them you are not going to return because of the policy. If enough people do this. Policy will change. Vote with your feet and your effectivo (cash)!

There also is no actual owner now as he died. One of the trustees is staying there & running the place.

Message from Blackbeards
I just got an email from Blackbeards. It looks like the policy is only about alcohol. This is what it said about the policy.
"Blackbeards has not raised room rates in over 10 years and when we did so it was less than a 10% Increase. Our hotel, like all other hotels in the world, rely heavily on the income from Bar and Restaurant Sales.
We no longer allow any outside purchased alcoholic beverages to be brought into Blackbeards, it will be confiscated upon your check in and returned to you when you check out.
Our bar has full bottle sales available of most major brands or if you notify us in advance we will try to have it here when you arrive. Helps us stay afloat so we can continue offering one of the best affordable vacations anywhere!

They have this policy stated in their confirmation already since March but I don't know anyone who faced such a treatment.

One guard even tried to tell me no food, as Iwas brining back leftovers from Sol Mio for the chicas. I walked past him & ignored him & reported it to Ted, one of the trustees in charge & he talked to them. Only checking for alcohol, not anything else.
