I alway travel with an unlocked GSM phone - and always get a SIM card, local number, and $10-20 in air time shortly after arrival. Any advice on how/where to do this in Quito? Any chance of getting it done on a Sunday?

I've done this with MoviStar, Orange, and Claro elsewhere in Latin/South America (all required passport in hand at time of set-up, BTW).

If I missed something after using the search function, sorry if question's a repeat (I've RTFF, I promise).

They have Movistar here but frankly the quality sucks. I dumped a $50 phone and bought new service with Porta (the big player here) within a few days. Much much better. I don't think they are open on a Sunday. Movistar isn't.

Do you have a pressing need to get it done on a Sunday?

If Quito becomes the next DR or CR, it's time to move on. I'm already shocked at the rental prices around here. Feels like CR 5-6 years ago. If the chongos get flooded by gringos, you can count on the prices going way up like Doll House or Extasis.

Even though I think there are better places to go in Quito for the money, I have to admit I've been impressed with Cafe Rojo the last couple times I've gone. Last Friday, hit CR with member SoCalJarHead, and there were more dark skinned, all natural girls working there than ever before. I can finally recommend this place.
