General Info

I was out of the area for a year, but back. I had work to do in Kuwait and Iraq, but was waiting for paperwork, so I took advantage of a cheap Jazeera Airways flight to fly to Bahrain for the night. ("for drinking" was my excuse to coworkers.) Kuwait was having a conference so the cheapest room I could find was USD 2100/night, and the alternative was a bunk in a tent with 15 other guys, which isn't really my style. Checking ISG for intel on an encrypted satphone from the desert is a lot less fun than it sounds.

Booked PH online for $100/night (via Orbitz). Rented a car. Only drove 8km total, but it still was better than dealing with taxis or the shame of the PH shuttle, I guess.

On arrival, the desk staff didn't know about the reservation, and made me log in from the machine in the lobby to find it. Apparently Orbitz goes via a reseller and they require a "voucher", which turned out to just be the confirmation email. Eventually the manager came over and said I should just be given a room, and pay if the Orbitz thing wasn't resolved overnight, which is fine with me. (in the morning, I was told they'd resolved the issue and I was not charged.)

Got a fairly nice room on the 4th floor; I'd say the hotel upgraded to a solid 2-3 star level (I usually stay in 5 star in the Gulf and Asia, but this is on par with a place I'd be happy to stay in the US, and after tents, was paradise). I'd had previous problems with the rooms (and thus booked a "real hotel" for the night to actually sleep), but now I see no point.

Went to my room.- the hallway guy said "the system had changed", and that girls no longer knocked on doors, but rather needed to be called. I had tipped him initially 10 AED (had no BHD), then gave him 20 more. He gave me a detailed list of numbers and nationalities.

Since this was early in the morning (1000-1100), I wasn't sure who would be up. Called a lot of numbers, starting with the Arabic girls, thinking they'd be more likely working than the Russians. But I'm not familiar with the terminology, what does PH stand for? & Where is Family Place? (googled it but nothing came up).

I used to stay at Ramee International (next to US Base) & there was a very nice CIS. Tried to get a room this time but the hotel is fully booked! :.(

Thanks for the very enticing report as usual. Man once I read your reports I cannot wait to get back to Bahrain. My area of interest like you is CIS. Another great informative report, Raj. Along the lines of Bret's previous questions, how often do you get tested for HIV/STD's? I got tested from Bahrain Medical Labs a few weeks ago for HIV and the test came back negative. As for BBBJ's, the only girl I've gotten those from in Bahrain is Aamira from PH.

I have to plan a business trip in the Gulf so I need to know how many days I should spend in Bahrain before going to Qatar, then Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Having some fun is more important than business on planning the trip.

I have already been to UAE so I know there's plenty of action there, no risk of a boring night but I have some doubts about Bahrain. This forum seems very skinny so should I guess BAH is dead and I'd rather move to UAE as soon as possible?

J, I think you should spend less time in Bahrain. Depends what kind of action your looking for. CIS kinda pretty much dried up in the years. If your in to PRC, Thais then this is the place to be but it pretty much limited. I visited Manama last March you can see my report. To me its different now from Qatar or UAE. Its still a party town but UAE is still the best in my opinion.
