Thanks BQ. What I read was that I could get a student visa in advance. But, I have heard that no matter how long I stay, over the allotted time of course, I will have to pay a fine if I stay longer than that issued by the DR when a visitor clears customs in pop or sdq etc. Visitor pay it in when they arrive its like $10 bucks US before you exit the terminal. I believe it is a travelers visa. They do the same thing in Thailand.

You will not have to pay for overstaying the tourist card, or even get a tourist ca - if you have a student visa. I think the rules are still that after 60 or 90 days you are not technically allowed to drive on a foreign drivers license, but you don't intend to drive much anyway.

After much input from ISG members on various forums I've decided to try and focus my attentions on Columbia and DR (probably in that order) in ragards as to where to go for 10 weeks to study Spanish and Chicas.
As this whole escapade still has 9 months until it's due to kick off, there is still time for travel modifications. If anyone has info that I'd find useful, such as apartment locations and costs, best cities to set up in etc. I'd appreciate it greatly.
To all of you who offered advice, I tried to PM you my thanks, but if I missed you, I offer it now.
Wherever I end up, I'll keep the ISG informed and look forward to hearing from all of you.

Both have desireable women of different flavors, but if your focus is the language, Colombia (first Spanish class: no 'U' in Colombia) is the choice.
The Spanish spoken there is the closer to the original Castillian (Castellano).
In many Latin American countries, the Spanish spoken is a local dialect, often with different words. A Spaniard wouldn't understand a good part of commonly spoken Mexican Spanish, and he wouldn't recognize what a "guagua" is. (a bus in Caribbean Spanish).

I have thus far traveled to Brazil, Colombia, and Thailand. From my various travels I have come to find that I like the simplicity of going to a location where the women are already available and I do not have to do much hunting. This is generally why I like the Rio termas so much. I want to visit DR and have read many of the trip reports. Nevertheless could someone breakdown a game plan that one like myself should adhere to if one just wants to experience something similar to Brazilian termas or the Medellin Mansion in Colombia? The last time I tried to piece together information from various trip reports and create a game plan was when I traveled to Thailand, and that did not turn out to be the most prudent. So if the experienced travelers could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

my $.02: go to SDQ, rent a room in Hotel Jaguar (not to be confused with Jaragua) or similar guest-friendly hotel. get a map of SDQ with all the relevant locations marked (it's in the SDQ thread) and walk/ride/drive from place to place, pull the chicas you like, take them to your hotel (or love motel) and enjoy! several "clubs" have rooms by the hour on-site, IMHO this is as close as you'd get to "termas" in terms of set-up, and maybe quality (if you're willing to pay big bucks.)
Alternatively, i'm sure people will suggest Blackbeard or Field of Dreams, but IMHO the selection in BB or FOD will not match Rio in either number of chicas or in quality.

Robby seeing how you and I are on the same path, path to "learning spanish" better than what we know already. Are you sure you want to got to Colombia? Let me state that I have not been to Colombia like my friends Voyager and Rodeo have. I love the DR and I would like a fellow mongerer to come to the DR and have a blast. How commited are you to Colombia, and do you have your army ready to provide security as I hear that you need one to go to get a beer now days. So says the news, but we know we can trust that source.(SMH)

Yanqui69 hit the nail on the head; if the objective is to learn Spanish, go to Colombia. Then, test your macking skills in DR! Of course, you'll be able to get plenty of practice with the ladies in either Bogota or Medellin (although, with the Spanish, the Paisas tend to slur certain sounds--probably from too much cock gobblin').

Time for a brief break from ho-mongering for a moment…
Conceptually what you are saying is true, however the magnitude of the situation you have painted is very overstated.
A Spaniard will understand 99% of the Spanish in any Spanish speaking country and vise versa. (For some reason I am afraid to write 100%). Yes there are local phrases in every country that have specific focus and a Spaniard would stumble now and then. However, the Spaniard will understand every word of the phrase and loose slightly the local context.
Example: Vamos por la guagua to a Spaniard might sound like “lets ride the bargain”. Then he would have to ask and find out the “bargain” is a economical “bus”. He understands 100% of the Spanish and 100% the intent is understood, he just had to be aware that guagua is used locally for “cheap bus”. I would never say the Spaniard is 100% lost. 20% lost at most is more like it.
Something also to be aware of…my dad had a favorite phrase he used to use that any local would understand in his region of Mexico. He used to say “Come Cuacha” as an insult. I learned later the word Cuacha was not known by any Spaniard. It came from the local Indians in the region he was from. The point here is not all words in South America are Spanish words so it is not right to classify them as part of the Spanish language and call it local Spanish. If you do I can walk around saying “Bon Appetite” is an English phrase.
Now I don’t even know if “guagua” is found in a dictionary which was written in Spain which brings me to my last story:
I have witnessed arguments between professional language translators from Spain arguing with translators from Latin America. The argument always boiled down to the dictionary. The Spaniard would bring their dictionary from Spain and the L Americans would read it, weep/ reject it, then bring out their own dictionary. Bottom line is, spanish words are spanish words. Only the application of the word strays 20% and that is not enough to state that a person from any country would be significantly confused in a different country.
For the native english speaker here... dont worry about visiting England. you will get along just fine. This is no different in the spanish world as well.

My Spanish is far from perfect, but I know perfectly well what a guagua is. People from England, the US, Australia, and Jamaica all speak different varieties of English, but they don't have much difficulty understanding each other. Same with Spanish. My Dominican wife has no trouble chatting with her Mexican and Colombian friends, and nor do I.

I was interested in this derivation of "guagua" as "bus".
The two I have heard so far are:
1) from the use of "guagua" to mean "baby" in much of S America. Originally "baby bus" then gradually came to be used for all buses up to and including intercity giants.
2) Onomatopoeic, imitating the sound of the engine. This usage only found in the island nations.
So that's three now. Any more?

In Puerto Rico we use "guagua" to name the buses, and some vehicles as for example minivans ans suv's. I can say: "Voy a lavar mi guagua" (I am going to clean my car), it is very common. I believe both uses you mention for guagua are correct but the onomatopoeic maybe comes from the sound of the horn, not of the engine.
