Sosua Reports

By reading the reports here, seems like Sousa is the place to be for some p4p, price for chicas similar to many places in Central America, not like Santo Domingo very expensive for a 3rd world country. Can someone please clarify which hotel(s) below near La passions, classicos, beach, casinos and discos.

- coco
- europa

All of them are within walking distance, but the casino is a few minutes ride by motoconcho. Sosua is a small place.

I saw one of the apartments the last time I was there. Its a really nice place with all the ammenities you would want.

Two things -

1. If you stay longer than two weeks you need to pay your own electric bill.
2. They have a one guest policy every 24 hrs. So if your bedroom is usually a revolving door it may not work out. They do this because there are alot of families staying there.

Otherwise thats where Im staying my next trip. Its in a pretty good location as well. Too bad its not on the ocean.

Club Residencial is probably one of the best guest friendly hotels in Sosua, but it comes with a hefty price tag. Room rates are $55 + 16% tax + $14 for A/C + $10 for superior apartment per day.

Club R is a very, very long walk to the beach and a long walk to the clubs. So add another $5 a day motoconcho cost.

New Garden is no where near as nice as Club R but a lot more convenient. Casa Valeria is another option.

Just cut all the crap and go to Europa.. Not the CLEANEST, but clean enough, VERY CHICA FRIENDLY, there is no better locale as well.. girls hanging out in the front and 100ft away.. $50/night everything included as well, AC/Comp in lobby and NEW jacuzzi.

I met the manager (german lady) who handed me a piece of paper with the rules for single guests. This was only this past july. Have the rules changed since then ?

Id say new garden is way more guest friendly. There are hookers all over that hotel.

girl friendly - no id check.

top security, aircondition in bedroom, tv + 100 channals , high speed internet access

pre-paid cell phone, bbq , swimming pool etc.

1st off anyone know if Sosua was affected by storm earlier this week.

2nd I want to combine Scuba & mongering. I need a recommendation for a girl friendly hotel that is close to Dolphin Dive Center which is supposed to be right on Sosua beach.

I'm looking for hotel with A/C, safe, clean, proximity to dive center, Internet access (preferred) and resonably priced.

So far based on posts, candidates are New Garden, although I've read you want upper rooms, not 1st floor rooms, Europa, Voramar (although a little further out)

Any alternatives? Basically I would like to be within walking distance of my diving, especially if I have to drag equipment every day and mongering action.

Hoping to go 12-30 tru 01-11, so need to make a decision quick. 1st time to DR. Any wing man in Sosua those weeks?

Hi there

As I just heard from the police, the restaurants, bars and discos didn't have to close during 23. Of December till 7. January. So it means during this time they can have open as long as they like. Like it was before some time ago. So it means we didn't have to go to the Disco by the casino, which is not really Gringo friendly. And its a test as well, so if they see that during this time, they didn't have so much problems, with fighting and so, may they discos can have open longer afterwards. Lets see and hope.

So tomorrow I'm on my trip from Switzerland over New York to Santo Domingo and around the 20. I will be in Sosua.

I'm staying at Hotel Orchidee, which is next to Rockys. So if everybody wanna meet a Swiss Monger, tell me. I beeing to Sosua several times.

And just what kind of culture did you experience in the mongering town of Sosua? How was the art exhibit that was on display from July 2007 - Jan 2008? Did you get down to the new Shakespeare Theatre and see the Dominican rendition of the Tempest? At least you got the local jargon from this year down pat right? (Come to think of it do you even speak Spanish? Does she speak English?--What a connection)

Like I have said one million times, you have to look at it like it´s a carnival. When you arrive you pay your money to enter, you ride all the rides, you eat the popcorn and cotton candy, then you take your happy ass home until next time. You can not take the rides home with you as some people try to do. You have to leave them there for the next group of people who want to visit the carnival. I would not think of sending Six Flags money every month after I have left, expecting them to section off the ´Scream Machine´ and let no one else ride until I return.

Damn, I had to come out of lurking mode for this one. Definitely got me thinking on how to properly monger and to respect the monger code of conduct. Too Funny!! Very well said brother Enternational. PREACH!

(Warning – this is a harrowing travel story in my route to a monger destination) (Chica stories will follow, promise)

I’m scheduled for 7 days in Puerto Plata / Sosua 12/16 – 12/23 and I’m very excited. This will be my first visit to the DR. I have been devouring the information on these boards the last 2 weeks. Today I wake up at 3:10am so I can depart by 3:30am (already packed) for a 2. 5 hours drive to make it to the Newark, NJ airport by 6am (flight is 8am). I leave my house at 3:40am (10 minutes late) and believe I’m still in good shape. I’m cruising along very good on 295-North in New Jersey when all the sudden it turns into I95-South to Philadelphia without any clear explanation. I U-turn for the exit and circle back to see what I missed and I verify my choices are I can take either 295-South or I-95 South. WTF. Remind me to thank NJDOT for this tar and concrete blackhole which is 295 North. After a few U-turns and speaking with a gasoline attendant, I finally realize I must backtrack down 295-South to get onto the New Jersey turnpike. I find NJTP and I’m back on track for a 6:40am arrival to offsite-parking. Ok. Let’s hope there are no big lines and no problems. Let’s be positive. Every 10 minutes I cycle through worrying and then comforting myself. Next issue is that it has been snowing in north NJ and there is now 2-3 inches of slush on the roads. As I go from exit 8 to exit 13, traffic slows down from 65mph to 40mph. Yikes! Well. Still moving. Let’s be positive. Ok, make it to Exit 13 and I most bone-headedly take Exit 13 and not Exit 13a as it says on my directions. Doh!

Toll-booth-man does not allow me to U-turn here to get to 13A and he gives me some semi-clear directions about navigating through Elizabeth, NJ to the airport. Fortunately there are clear signs with Newark Airport in view in this part of town and I navigate my way towards the airport. Now, I have no idea of how to find my Park2Fly location. Ah hah, I see ABC parking and figure that will do. I pull in there at 7am and quickly catch a shuttle over to the airport. The roads are pretty bad, now 4-5 inches of slush in some areas. At NJ airport, I hop out of shuttle and hurry to Continental’s international counter. Thankfully the line there moved very quickly and I get to an agent. Then to find that they can’t find my reservation. WTF. I check my reservation and I’m flying American, not Continental, which is in terminal A, not terminal C that I am in now. OK, my bad this time. It is 7:15am. Catching my 8am flight is looking dismal. I bust a move on over to Terminal A and there is a huge line at American. However, I scope out hardly any line at the self-checkin kiosks. I walk over and am directed right up front to an open kiosk. I swipe my passport through and it rejects me. Attendant tells me I did not meet the 40-minute pre-checkin requirement. I stare down at my watch and it is 7:22am. Double Frak, 38 minutes, just 2 minutes short. Well, someone’s got a heart. The female reservation agent must sense the holiday season and decides to do an override and let’s me on this flight after a short lecture arriving early for international flights. Ok, 7:25am and I’m head to gate 33A. Ooops. Forgot about the TSA screening before the gates. Two lines to choose from and I pick the slowest one. The line is going ubber-slow, handicapped people are being moved to the front of the line and at 7:42am I tell one of the TSA guys that I need help. He bumps me to the front of the line and by 7:46am I am through TSA screening.

I go off dashing for gate 33A like OJ Simpson (remember those Hertz commercials? ) thinking they may have already closed the doors at the gate. Luckily, they are only mid-way through seating the flight and I get in line with a few minutes to spare. I can’t believe I’m gonna make this flight. Have a slight urge to go to the men’s room but there is no way I’m stepping out of line. I can go once I’m seated on the plane. Ahhh. Made it. At last. But wait, this is just my flight to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Due to some delays at Newark and the plane requiring de-icing of the wings prior to take off, the flight leaves 45 minutes late. My layover time in San Juan between connecting flights is 45 minutes. Uh oh. My flight lands in PR at 1:25, I deplane at 1:35pm and my connecting flight leaves at 1:40pm. Uggh. Upon landing they tell us that an agent will be waiting outside the flight with connecting information. When I get off the plane to meet the agent, she already has a new boarding pass for me, the same flight, THE NEXT DAY. She says that I can go to gate 1B if I want to see if I can still make my original flight. I take off down the corridor with backpack and laptop in hand. Gate 1B is not that close but I manage to make it there right about 1:40pm. Display at 1B gate says flight is on time. I ask the agent about the flight and she says there is a maintenance delay and I will be able to get on. Yeah, shewww. I continue to walk around a little to cool down from my 2-minute sprint. About 2:15pm they post a new time of 3:25 for the flight to Puerto Plata (POP). Cool, got some time to eat so I go get a bite of pizza and a coke and do some reading. Then 2:45pm comes and they annouce flight has been cancelled. I ask gate agent and they tell me I will be rerouted through Santo Domingo, possibly Santiago.

After sitting around the San Juan airport until 4pm, I get called to the desk and get a ticket on 5pm flight to Santiago. Will my bags make it? "Your bags are going to go to Puerto Plata". Great! At 4:40pm rolls around we board the flight and they (they being American Eagle) tell us that our bags will go to Santiago, just not on the same flight. Ok, I have an uneventful, mostly on-time flight to Santiago, DR with no bag. I get through immigration and get to baggage clain at 7pm. AA baggage reps tell us another flight will arrive at 7:45pm will our baggage. 8:00pm and no plane. Agent tells us the plane was in route, but it turned around and went back to San Juan for an unknown reason (perhaps it never actually left San Juan). She advices us to file a claim for our luggage and call tomorrow (Monday) morning to request it to be delivered after it arrives in Santiago. I file my claim and then seek transportation to Sosua. After some minor confusion and my thinking AA is going to stiff us for transportation to Sosua, we find a representative who gives us a taxi voucher for Sosua.

I depart with a fellow travelling commisserator at 8:30pm by taxi to Sosua. His name is D and he have a place in Sosua. Quickly in the cab ride I discover a new sport. It is called "never-ending chicken". As we are driving down poorly lit, pot-hole ridden roads to Sosua, we find that there are all kinds of people, motoconchos, cars double-parking in middle of 2-lane road, dogs, cats, and mules all out for an evening stroll. The game is pretend like you are driving trying to kill them and see who gives in first. I was upfront in the van with the driver and even though I was tired and trying to catch some Zs, I couldn’t help but to open my eyes and watch this spectacle. About an hour into it I began to get a little comfortable with it. However, no doubt the traffic fatalaties of cars vs. Monoconchos and pedrestrians much be pretty high on a per person basis. At 10pm, D and I arrive safely in Sosua. Now to get some dinner and find a hotel.

The street scene in Sosua goes on and completes at 5am in Sosua. That will be my next story.
