I personally would not stay in Blackbeard's for more than one night, just stay in the NG, it is 5 minutes to the bars, and 10 minutes walking to the beach, NG has a few street rats looking for business hanging out at the pool, maybe 2 or three doable ones! If you want more privacy, rent a condo.

Use common sense and you will be safe, it is not like Rio, you can walk around, and not worry about armed bandits from a favela.

Crime in DR is high but it is higher in Rio, so you are going to be safer in DR than in Rio. A country can have a crime rate similar to another but can be safer for you. For example, according to statistics and dozens of reports, tourists are a target for delinquents in Brazil, but not in the DR. So it makes DR safer. But it you wear expensive jewelry, flash money everywhere and bring expensive electronics you can be a target for delinquents, some chicas or even some hotel employees. As stated here before: keep a low profile, do not get too drunk if you travel alone.

For nightlife, its Sosua. Its beach is more active. It s a tourist town.
Costambar, where BB is located, is a very sleepy mostly redidential area.
The beach is 5 minutes walk away, and much more quiet, secluded. On weekends the locals use it. During the week you have it all to yourself.

Violent crime in Costambar against tourists is unheard of.
The place has a small commerical area with supermarket/money changer, pharmacy for cheap Cialis, etc. and a couple of restaurants.

As mentioned, use sense in Sosua. Don't get stupid-drunk, avoid flashing cash, avoid isolated areas, etc. Beware of the possibility of pickpockets; ie, girls brushing up against you, appearing to grope you, etc.

The rest depends on you taste. Sosua has flocks of girls everywhere trying to earn some money. Any unescorted girl(s) you meet can be presumed to be P4P. It is all up to you regarding negotiation, your expectations vs. hers, etc. You can have a great experience or poor, its buyer beware, as is always the case with street action.

BB's on one hand is often recommended for the controlled atmosphere (crazies and thieves screened out, regular medical checks, quality-controll and someplace to complain in the event of problems, etc.) In that sense it is a good idea for first-timers in DR, non-Spanish speakers, and the more experienced disdain it as "spoon-feeding". It is better to stay in Sosua. You will meet lots of girls and will have a local experience. BB is a structured brothel with rooms, food , drink and resident chicas. In Sosua it is the thrill of the chase to get the girls, negotiate etc. Maybe you get a part timer GFE you can take on trips or keep her a long time.

Also to add, El Pasion in Sosua is also a structured brothel with rooms, food, drink and resident chicas with a menu of different prices. They also have a website and you can check out which girls they have before you even get there. I don't know if K-Cita is still open. Also partying at night in Cabarete is awesome which will be an easy 10/15 minutes from sosua. You are more centrally located in Sosua.
