Most people will avoid these areas, so I believe getting around shouldn't be a problem. Taxis should be available and will know what areas or streets to avoid or to go around. Hotels may be fully booked in certain areas.

Worst case you might have to bunker down a few days with the same girls.

Cab drivers are everywhere. Usual process, tell the cabbie where you want to go, possibly have a screen shot of the place and address to show him / her / shehe it, get in the cab if driver says ok, at location pay the driver what ever they tell you the fare is.

I presume you are arriving to T1, which is the furthest from Makati, which sounds like where you are heading rather than Malate / Ermita area. I can't remember exactly from T1 to Makati, but the taxi fare by the meter is probably around 200 pesos ($4 usd). Plus add 35 pesos for the skyway.

Just a warning about Manila taxi drivers. They are always trying to scam passengers. Always get them to reset the meter when you get in. It should reset to 40 pesos, otherwise you will be paying for the prior passenger's trip as well as your own. Or they will agree to use the meter, and then when you are moving will say that the charge is 300 pesos fixed charge for example. Just be firm and get them to use the meter. Most will ask for meter plus 50 pesos, which is reasonable in my view to add an extra 50 pesos.

Beware of the yellow airport taxis as these are the ones most likely on the take, rather than the public white taxis. Dealing with Manila taxi drivers takes experience and is usually a learning experience for the uninitiated to avoid being ripped off.

At airport terminal one, when I exit the terminal I walk to the left and find steps up to the departure level. There you will see taxis dropping off passengers. Jump into one of them but not before the driver understands you want him to use the meter. Then as he pulls away verify the meter is on. Otherwise open the taxi door to get him to stop and get out and find another taxi (I have done this before).

As for hotels, the Heritage Hotel is across the street from the Edsa entertainment complex. That will keep you occupied for some time. Consider staying at the Heritage for the sake of simplicity.

I live in Manila and travel through the airports for my work (domestic and international) around 3 times every month.

In all of my time here (21 years; the yellow taxis have been available for 5 or 6 years), I have NEVER been scammed by a yellow taxi and I use them all the time because they always provide a receipt and never try on the scam racket.

Maybe you didn't realize that the flagfall is 70 php and the meter ticks a bit faster than the white metered taxis. That is clearly displayed on the ticket that is issued to you with the taxi registration etc clearly written.

I don't know why you would say "as these are the ones most likely on the take".

They are registered drivers and it is easy to report them.

Are you basing your comment on one experience only because if so you were VERY unlucky. It's never happened to me.

I have been living in Thailand for 8 years and my first trip to Manila was before that. If I don't remember anything else from my first time, I remember someone in the forum telling me to walk outside, turn left and take the YELLOW taxis. I have been doing that ever since (besides the times I call Uber). Unlike RK, the yellow taxis have tried to scam me a few times (with the hot meter) going to Ermita from the airport. The highest was to the tune of 500 pesos. Luckily I have taken that route many times to the City State Hotel and knew better. When you come out of the airport the white taxis tell you an astronomical price from the start, like you are in London or something. Like 800-1000 pesos to go to Ermita. (MF I am going to Ermita, not AC!) But when you just flag one down outside in town there is never a ripoff; just normal meter pricing. I never see yellow taxis in town, only white ones. Why is that?

I've been here for several years and have had a handful of bad experiences. I think the reputation for dishonesty is overblown, though the ones who are dishonest or ask "How much you pay, sir?" tend to sit waiting for fellas in front of LA Cafe, EDSA Complex, orbiting Burgos, etc., so they tend to be foreigners who tell their friends and so on. The biggest rip off I experienced was 6 or 7 years ago when I hopped in one parked in front of LA Cafe (then called MBC), didn't notice the meter, and paid three times more, the equivalent of $12, which was hardly a disaster, to return to Makati. To avoid a repeat of that I walk down the street a half block and hail one.
