If anyone has stayed at the Riande Continental recently I would like your thoughts on it and how close it is to the Veneto Hotel and in addition is it chica friendly?

I read where Panama is going to start requireing a visa for Colombians to enter Panama. Is this going to be the end of Panama City mongering? I wonder how this will affect the action there. It seems like bad news to me.
Just a reminder (to all the newbies, like myself) who plans on using an ATM while in Panama. Call your bank FIRST before you leave!
I called my bank today just asking for info on which ATMs to use in Panama and my bank asked for day in and day out info for when I would be in Panama. I was told that if I hadn't notified them FIRST my card would not have worked and most likely the machine would have eaten the card.
It is a security precaution that many banks use in today's world. Don't say you weren't warned!
As I understand it, and I could be wrong, Panama will issue Visas to Colombians for 30 days. Colombians used to be able to stay in Panama for 3 months as a "tourist" with no problems and even have that time extended. As far as the Chica situation, if they are under "contract" by the club, they will be able to obtain a "work" visa that will be for an extended amount of time (probably 6 months to 1 year). I wonder if they'll have to pay taxes?
I stayed here 3 years ago in '04, the hotel was VERY chica friendly.
As a result of all the street crime related to drug trafficking, the Panama Government will start asking Colombians for a VISA to enter the country before year end.
I don’t believe this is going to be the end to our game, but might impact prices and availability.
Let’s keep an eye on the issue.

Which bank? I use Chase (formerly CitiBank) & have never had any problems. I've used it all over the world, Latin America, Europe, Eastern Europe, Asia, etc. The only problem I had (once) is that they put a stop on it because I had charged several times in one week in grossly different locations (I travel a lot) of the world. I called them, told them if I couldn't use their damned card to manage my affairs when I travel I'd find another bank. After all, when you're traveling you really need your card, right? They said no problem, so that may have been similar to what you're referring to.
BTW - that's my reason exactly for NEVER counting on using your ATM card when you travel. I alwys carry enough cash for the trip & then use my ATM when I can to save on the exchange rate.
Good point.

I only travel Internationally 2-3 times per year. Call me old fashioned but I still use traveler checks. I always get the checks for free but I pay a commisssion when cashing them in. I have read that ATMs gets you the best exchange rate most of the time but my bank charges a withdrawal fee which makes ATMs less attractive.
Dan D,
My bank's ATM card is M and T Bank. I was told I had to find an ATM on the Star/ Plus Network. I'm sure I will get hit up with fees too. I wonder if it would be better to just use a cash advance on my Bank of America Visa card?
Allover I had thought of using traveler's checks, however I heard because Panama uses American Dollars it is difficult to find many places that will cash TCs in Panama. Does anyone know if this is true or not?
Free here,
No, just about any MAJOR bank here in panama will cash travelers checks. Not to mention there are TONS of banks here. BUT I would strongly suggest just bringing your ATM cards, and remember Panama usese the US dollar, no need for the exchange rate bullshit. Any other questions, PM me.

But you do get charged for using your us atm card in Panama, as I normally get charged for using my Panama atm card in Managua for example
Does anyone have some advice for choosing a hotel? Veneto seems to be too expensive; are you still allowed to hang out in the casino if you're staying somewhere else? I was thinking of either staying at el Panama or Royal Decameron.
Also, anyone have any advice on getting a female companion to go to the beach for a day or two with me?
No problem hanging out in any casino including Veneto. El Panama is almost next door. I liked the live bands at El Panama and they had a few girls available there at times.
Las Vegas and Riande Continental have been recommended by others. I've never stayed at either of these but their locations are great. Read back through this thread for more hotel info.
I stayed at the Hotel Milan last week, it was $38.50 including tax, per day, breakfast is available (a la carte) in the liittle restaraunt attached to the hotel. On average it was $11 a day for me and my girl. There was no issue with getting her in the hotel.
The room is about the same size as a standard in the Veneto, rooms have electronic combo safe, bathrooms are new and clean, shower large enough for two people (I like that feature). Furniture is functional but not luxorious, mattresses not the greatest, but not overused like you finds in some cheap hotels, the air conditoner worked well and the room was comfortable.
I will definitely stay here again, since its centrally located and save me $100 a day from the Venetos new rate of $149 plus tax ($164).
