Kiev is a very safe city. I walked around alone even at 3 am far from the city center without any problem at all. Just avoid drunk people and don't look around. Taxi drivers are scumbag here, I agree. You need to haggle with them every time, they see foreigners as walking ATM and they always try to scam them.
