Follow the Money
It comes down to the money. It is possible that some big money guys believes they can get a bigger pay day by kicking out the chicas it could happen. Tourism is a wild card that is hard to predict. Ships are coming PP that create an opportunity to get into the pockets of tourist. The guys who benefit from this are on another level. This will not help hotels but day time shops who knows.
Sounds like they want to attract more families. Some will see this as a threat while others will see it as an opportunity.
I think this is right. Yes, Sosua has prostitution as a niche market and it does earn foreign currency for the country, but the prostitution is also detrimental for mainstream tourism. Personally I cannot stand what Pedro Clissante has become at night, though potentially it is an attractive destination with bars, cafes, and restaurants and OK in the day time.
About two years ago I was on Sosua beach on the morning of July 4th on a stunningly beautiful sparkling day, and there was not a single tourist person on the beach. And yet this was on a beautiful beach close to where Columbus first landed in the Western hemisphere, close to an airport, on a national holiday in the US which is only 1000 miles away from Miami. I though back to how I was lying on a crowded beach at John Smith's Bay in Bermuda on July 4th 1980, 800 miles from New York City, and saw how Sosua might be if things changed.
It won't change overnight, but in the long run nothing ever stays the same.

The question is if family tourism is viable viewing sosewer reputation. That's a heavy marketing lift.

Well lets hope they do something like Thailand, they haven't suffered for the prostitution.

Anytime
I like how the board has completely glossed over this. Is it too late for you guys who booked for Memorial Day weekend to get your money back from AA and Spirit Airlines, LOL?
Anytime the USA helps a country in any way they want that country they help to become like them.

Frannie you are showing your age. For your average monger Sosua is a dream come true. The reason there are not many "regular "tourist has nothing to do with prostitution. Sosua is a small town with a nice beach. However there are hundreds of beach towns in the carribean. I have been to PUnta Cana and Caberete both are geared to tourism and saw very few Americans. Sosuais competing with these locations. There only so many tourists. Sosua is never going to be able too out shine these locations. It has a niche for attracting mongers like the PI and TL. They should milk this niche for all it is worth. Rio is slowing down and flights to the east are getting more expensive. Sosua has a nice edge for the growing sex vacation trade. I know for us season guys Sosua is to easy but if it was not there boy would I miss it. Remember your first time there how it blew your mind. The only thing that changed is your perspective. I accept it for what it is and still enjoy it.

Hello
After reading all these, should I cancel my 2 week upcoming trip to sosua next month? It's my first time in DR and I don't want to waste my hard earned 2 week vacation.
Please suggest me about what to do now? My flights are all booked.
You could be right!
Growing up in Manhattan, I never thought I would see Times Square get rid of the mafia control and change into a family friendly destination. Rio is also going through a transformation these days.
The difference is that the USA and Brazil have much more money to throw at it than a broke assed country like the DR.

What, are we paying them Food Stamps and EBT Cards? Don't know where you've been for the last 5 years but the USA is BROKE! The debt ceiling extension ends May 19th. They've just been kicking the can down the road while Helicopter Ben (Bernanke) keeps churning that printing press.
This house of cards is coming down any day now. The DR better look to China if they are expecting any "real" currency. We'll all be wiping our asses with these inflated dollars pretty soon (toilet paper will have more value).
