Sao Paulo Reports

Many thanks to Nounce, Axel Heyst, DreamCarnarvon, Bearsi, The Critic et al. I really appreciate the solid advice on how to go about things in Brazil and the different points of view from these fine gentlemen.

ATM scam: When I arrived in SP on Monday, I was weary of using the ATM at the airport given the jacked up fees etc. I had a recollection that some board member had used the ATM at the same hotel where I am staing with a positive review so I took it to be a safe bet. As expected I was prompted to go with a shitty pre-determined exchange rate for the withdrawal in USD which I quickly rejected so as to get the withdrawal in Reais and let Schwab handle the rest for me. What I didn't pick up on in my tiredness / jetlag is the amount listed for the service fee from the ATM for the transaction. My eyes and my mind told me that for the R2,300 withdrawal it was R30 (6). I withdrew my cash and was on my merry way, though I did think the $509 withdrawal notification alert from my account was high, I was too focused on getting myself balls deep in Brazilian pussy to worry too much at the time. When I looked carefully at my receipt this morning I realized, what I thought was a R30 charge, was really are $309 - that's close to $60 USD on a withdrawal of around $450. I'm not even going to bother with the poor conversion rate in relation to the XE rate that I got. I have since read some posts mostly on the Rio forum about such BS and the recommendation is to withdraw from Bradesco or Santander. If there are any better options that myself and other newbies can use, please share.

I know a few affluent Paulistas. Not uber wealthy by any means. My observation is that they are very sensitive about security and transportation. They drive decent but practical cars. If we go out drinking at night, they have private car services that they know and use. They will never use taxis or ubers.

These are just my anecdotal observations. I never had a conversation with them about sports cars or luxury cars.

I have never tested the limit of this rebate. Regardless of the Schwab rebate, I generally avoid using ATMs at hotels, airports and clubs because they overcharge for the convenience. So I stick to major bank ATMs usually at a branch.

Some of my experiences regarding some of the recent discussions:

ATM fees:.

Some ATMs (Some in GRU near the exit and the Grand Hyatt Sao Paulo comes to mind) have a very high ATM fee structure based on a percentage of withdrawal. Thankfully both Schwab and my high end Chase account reimbursed the fees fully, which were $50 plus dollars per transaction. So for me, it's not a big deal, as long as I declined the conversion. With that sad, it is best to use a regular bank ATM in the city. I like Bradesco and Satander.

Scandallo entrance fee / min consumption:

It is pretty crazy to see the admission / minimun consumption double in less than 2 years. When I first went in May of 2021, It was R150 before 7 pm and R300 after 7 PM. It has crept to R200 / R400 earlier this year and now stands at R300 / R500. On some nights when they have special musical guest or events, It can be up to R600-800 after 7 pm!

The consumption portion can be used for food, alcohol, non-alcoholic drinks, tobacco products (cigars, cigarettes, vape pens), etc.

If you go there before 7:00 pm, you can return later in the same day / night and don't have to pay any additional entrance fee or minimum consumption. On your return visit, you just pay for whatever you consume. Please note that whatever leftover consumption from your earlier visit does not carry over to your return visit.

One useful strategy to save money that my friends and I have used is to get there before 7:00 pm, pool our consumption and get a bottle or two, and then return later in the evening after dinner somewhere else to drink the bottles. Any bottle you buy is good for 6 months. You can use your unfinished bottles upon your return visit. You can drink your bottle (s) over the course of days or weeks or months. The strategy is best when you're going with a few friends, but still can be useful if you are solo and plan to revisit the club.

Arriving before or after 7:00 PM:

They are pros and cons to both option besides the cheaper admission. I have been to the club as early as 2:00 pm and as late as 1:00 am.

I have found some real gems early in the afternoon / early evening. Those gems that I found were only there for short period of time, because they were getting over some difficult short-term financial situations. They chose to go to the club during the day, so it doesn't affect their normal personal lives, and can chalk it up to working a regular job during the day. While others just aren't night owls, big drinkers or don't want to compete with the night time talent.

It is very interesting to see the shift change that occurs between 6 to 9:00 pm You get to see a larger pool and variety of talent. Then they are some superstars who only show up after 11:00 pm as they are confident that they can always wheel in a guy, so they know they don't need to put in the full 8-hour shift to get a free invite the next day. Or they are financially secure enough to not care about the free invite.

It all comes down to whether you would get bored at the club by coming in earlier. When I go there early, it is usually with friends so time goes by quick. And we usually leave to go eat elsewhere and then return later in the evening when it's hopping. Other times, we go just before 7 pm and eat dinner there, as we don't want to stay up past midnight. So it's just a relaxing night out with the boys and the girls we pick for the night. BTW, the food is very good at Scandallo.

But like others have said, the afternoon / early evening pales in comparison to late night in terms of vibe, energy, amount of girls and guys. Before 7 or 8 pm, only the small bar by the elevator, restaurant and small outdoor patio are open. After 8 or 9 pm, depending on occupancy, they open the bigger outdoor terrace, which doubles occupancy space. After 9 to 10 pm, they open the club / disco, and the space doubles again!

I've found Wed and Thursday to be the busiest, followed by Tuesday and Friday, with Saturday being the slowest. It is crazy from 11 pm until 2-3 am, when it begins to calm down.

Paulistanos and Paulistas tend to drive them more during weekend, when they might not be stuck in traffic. Also, many keep their sport cars in their week-end houses, where they can drive more freely. If you were to visit any of the top buildings in VNC, Itaim, Jardins, Cidade Jardins you will notice the car garage are enclosed, with doors and fitted with all the whistles, inside those close box, there are plenty of Ferraris, Lambo, Porsche, Maserati, MB, and bullet proofed SUV and luxury cars.

In South America, one can tell how wealthy a person usually by the car they drive. Note. I said wealthy and not rich. Many wealthy businessmen will drive basic practical cars because they are less likely to get robbed or mugged in the street and will hire a driver / bodyguard. I still notice what kind of car they drive whenever I meet a new supplier and whenever they tell me they are poor, I laugh and tell them this story. They usually concur.

Wanted to mention this small story. Took a taxi near to a shopping in the Moema area. The taxi driver was an evangelist (religious music playing on his radio).

When he left me at the door of the clinica he said some moral quote like "these guys going to **** houses" (mais um cara indo para puteiro).

I could have said nothing, but decided to reply: Yeah, my girlfriend works there. (oh sim, minha nomarada trabalha alí oh).

Taxi driver replied: Didn't want to offend my friend (sem animo de ofender amigo).

Religious guys always suck. Those are the first to make the line in clinicas weekends.

I think because the supply is limited. They may have figured out price increase did not reduce business so they did it. Coincidently, there are 3 posts complaining about how expensive Casarao has become on the last page or so on GPGuia.

Tonight I needed someone to share pizza with me in one of the best pizza restaurants. I contacted a girl and invited her to join me and did a video call. The girl likes wine so we ordered a bottle. The total is less than R500. I told the girl in WhatsApp that the dinner is no strings attached and she can leave after. She sent me this when we finished pizza before desert. LOL. We talked by WhatsApp in the restaurant and it was mostly in Portuguese but this message she wrote in English.

Random observations over the last few days.

I stayed a few nights at the JW Marriott. Used to be the Four Seasons and, in fact, Uber shows the pick-up as being the Four Seasons Hotel. The hotel was great and the rooms much better than the Renaissance, but I would not recommend for mongering. They're aren't any safes in the rooms so I wouldn't feel comfortable bringing back someone I just met.

Went to Bomboa Tuesday night. Room fee was are $170, not $150 as reported earlier.

Scandallo Thursday night was dead. I was there from 10:00 until midnight. The outdoor area next to the restaurant was closed off, the upstairs was closed off, and overall just had the pandemic era vibe. Took a Blanca back to my hotel (I moved to the Grand Hyatt). I felt like I was overpaying a bit but the little head was thinking, not the big head. However, she and the little head were muito simpatico and the big head thanked the little head later.

I tried to do that, got in by 5 paid $300 all consumption, then tried to exit before using it. The lady said if I entered later after exiting I need to pay $500.

Read reviews for massage near Santo Andre on GP Guia. One had good reviews for excellent massage but was warned is a Gilf. Advertises for 200 for an hour. It's easy to use up the consumption at this joint and advisable since you'll just be throwing away money if not. Food is great and can definitely replace a lunch or dinner meal.

From open time til 10 pm its just an upscaled hooters restaurant. Less space and less girls. All you can do is eat and drink since everything is closed off so you're just a sitting duck for the waiters to fuck you and then the girls to slap a fork in you and call it a day. I see no reason to go before 9 pm because of this and less more so with this new development!

The nerve! I have half a mind of writing the brazilin ambassador to the US and the president of brasil for this atrocity!
