Based on experience and applying a theoretical 100 k tip, there are a number of factors which influence how well (or poorly) the tip is received.

Variables include:

1. The quality of the establishment.

2. The rapport built between the two parties (party be being polite and making Party A laugh).

3. The gap size in age and physical appearance of the two parties (the bigger the gap, the bigger the tip required to satiate Party A).

4. Indonesian language fluency (outward indicator of local knowledge and adds to rapport building).

If you can work 3 out of those 4 variables in your favour, then a 100 k tip is at most warmly received and at least, accepted without fuss.

Agreed on spoiling the market by over tipping but at the same time, depends on level of service I received. At classic or similar establishments, I've tipped 100-150 to the girls that gave me amazing service, same goes for other places, at same time I deliberately tipped 50 to girls who were persistent on lady drinks and provided shitty service just to send a strong msg that "you need to up your service".

Language could be a challenge in conversing with some but telling her what you want using signs or common words, they understands pretty good.

I'm contrary, tip based on Place, Looks and service. You got shitty service, just come out and walk away. You got decent service, tip decent and on. That price doesn't go up just because somebody else pays a higher tip, not for them and not for you. And how much you tip is entirely up to you and you do not reveal it until after the act. So how is the market spoiled?!

We are discussing Classic, Travel, and Malioboro where there is a non-negotiable basic price set by the establishment, and a 100% voluntary tip which is entirely at the discretion of the customer.

It is the assembly line functional encounter. If he wants to tip in that environment for that kind of experience and that's what makes him feel good, well it's nothing worth thinking about. Go to these places once and it will be clear to you.

2. They have a right to refuse a customer. I have seen it first hand many times.

3. Half of them are freelancers and are allowed to leave at any time. The other half, who have taken on debt, are only restricted from leaving until they pay back what they owe. It's the same as locals who have taken on unsecured loans from financial institutions not being allowed to travel overseas until they pay back what they owe. Or employers confiscating passports of KITAS holders.

Please let's not turn Indonesia into the next Thailand or Cambodia. I will for sure keep the non-mainstream places to myself only, as the last thing we need is bules spoiling the market.

It happens that Classic, Travel and Malioboro are my favorite places to monger. I have been going there (intermittently) for years. I must have slept with several hundred girls in those establishments. It is based on those experiences that I have formed the impression that around 300 k is a standard tip that will be considered decent and neither impress nor disappoint much. Many other members have stated on this forum at various times that they don't even like those establishments, and I guess they don't spend much time there either. To each his own, but perhaps it also has something to do precisely with not working out / accepting the pricing / tipping system. Some places in Jakarta are cheaper than these, but tend to have very low hygiene standards (no or dirty shower, dirty bed). But many are more expensive, and some are much more expensive. E. g. Zen Club Thamrin. Prices there start a bit over 3 million per hour and go up to 6 million. Not including tip. And personally I don't even find the Zen girls that attractive. What I like about a place like Classic is that the rooms are spotless, the basic price of girls is low and their rewards are instead in the form of tips, which gives them an incentive to perform well. If the customer understands and accepts the system.

I like to sleep with several girls in a row on the same night. This gives me some additional impressions of how tips are perceived. The girls share information with each other and how much you tip may therefore influence how the other girls and mamasans relate to you. If you tip much less than 300 k, they are likely to be less friendly and less service-minded. Sometimes I also tip a mamasan 100 k if she brings me a girl that performs really well. That can have a great effect.

Obviously any tipping involves an element of subjectivity. If you ask what is the usual tip in a restaurant in the US, in Germany, in Japan etc. , people. Including locals. Will also give you different answers. At the same time, there are certain levels that will substantially reduce the risk of the waiter spitting in your dish in the kitchen the next time you visit the restaurant. I don't understand all the moral indignation here on the forum about different views on levels of tipping.
