I published in the map a link to a taxi company that offers a $28 price from SDQ airport to the city, which is $12 less than airport taxi guys. I called today to Zona Oriental office and they quoted me 750 pesos, which is barely over $20. I do not understand why the price difference but can infer that it is a taxi that comes from west of river (the $28 taxi) instead of east (the $20 taxi).
I spoke with a few chicas during my last trip. One light skin attractive Santiago chica who works in an electronics store told me she gets paid 2,000 pesos for every 15 days of work, she works at least 8 hours per day.
A light skin attractive chica in La Vega told me she gets paid 250 pesos per day, for 8 hours of work.
I was told prices for motoconchos, 20 pesos and up. A taxi 150 pesos and up.
I was told the price of Platanos has fallen, something like 3 pesos in the street, 5 or 6 pesos per platano in a store. One pound of good rice, 20 pesos.
Sometimes when the chicas have semi rough hands, I can understand it, some drive scooters. Many chicas live in houses with various locks and gates, many times the metal gates and locks get stuck, requiring more force to open them, I can see how some Dominican chica's hands may not be the softest.
I drove by one bar and they a had a special, large bottles of presidente beer for 50 pesos.
When driving outside of Santo Domingo, especially east of Santo Domingo you will see women standing on the side of the road. they are waiting for publicos. Some people will wait on the side of a busy road in the grass, no sidewalks in some places, until the publico comes by. The publico will stop to pick them up. A publico is a van or small bus.
I have driven by some chicas and they motioned me to stop, sort of like hitchhiking.
I drove into one place in La Romana to get gas, I looked at the pumps and they looked different. The place looked like a gas station, but it was a propane station. Some cars have propane tanks in their trunks. Other people had tanks to be refilled for use in their homes. I have seen plenty of people carrying a large propane tank on a motorcycle with a motoconcho.

Propane gas is subsidized by government to avoid the deforestation problems Haiti has. It costs around 65 pesos or less than 2 dollars per gallon. People in Haiti make coal from wood or use tree branches to cook, deforesting vast green areas of the country. In Dominican Republic gasoline cost more than $4 dollars per gallon which is more than double the price or propane so most cars have a propane tank which also provides better mileage than gasoline and is more environment friendly. The big problem with propane tank on cars is that installation is not regulated and death by tank explosions occur with some frequency.
7 bucks a day. Can't imagine. If a few of the 'hoes in this town had to live like that, maybe we'd see a slight attitude change
I see that a lot of people travel to DR on a regular basis and have plenty of info to share. I'm seriously considering leaving the US and reside in DR. I would like to know if anyone could share job opportunities and living in DR. I do not know the specific areas to work or reside nor have a clue of where to start. I recently turned 40 but still have a young spirit.
Please advise.

Difficult to imagine how a person or a family survives, isn't it?
Fully employed, work your butt off and still exist at barely the survival level,
let alone save a little for house, car, education, etc.
(and the economy is even worse now, -thousands of tourism jobs lost).
So working in the sex trade is the only solution for many women.

Samsung camera phone, my local Walmart has them in stock. This phone can be unlocked in the Dominican Republic for 250 pesos, thereafter you can get a phone number for Claro (Codetel) for free. Thereafter you add minutes by buying Claro cards which can be purchased in 100, 250, 500 pesos denominations. Claro cards can be bought in the street and at many stores, colmados etc.

Can be a good gift for a chica as well. Or buy two and keep one plugged in while in Dominican Republic and you will always have a charged battery that you can swap into the phone that you use.
I have been told that Orange can be more economical, I was told that Orange calculates usage by the second, whereas Claro calculates usage by rounding up to the nearest minute. I have not used Orange.

I don't think there are much social services programs such as welfare, or unemployment insurance.

For me flying from jfk to sdq, it doesn't really help me much. Round trip flights from jfk to santo domingo are $351 dollars now. Sometimes the price goes down to $311 round trip. Check out the forum DR1 dot com for a vast amount of information on these questions. There is little or no opportunity to get a job that will pay you more than starvation wages (literally). You can try to get a job with a foreign company that will send you to the DR, or create your own business, or work online. The majority of expats have pension or investment income. At 40 you are still a kid by expat standards .
I know I forget quite often but every once in awhile we need to go to our PMs and delete the old ones to make room for new PMs.
I just cleaned mine up, why not do the same?

I left the US years ago and I reside in the DR. I guess from what the other poster commented, I am very young by expat standards.
If you are thinking of working here you should look into working at one of the resorts or working for one of the call centers. Outside of that you will not make enough to survive and you probably won't with one of those jobs. If you are a professional maybe that is a different story but, if you are trying to get a regular job, even if you get one you are shit out of luck.
If you are considering moving here, in my oppinion, you should first come for an extended period and stay in different places to see if you really like it. (In my case, I first came here and stayed in a little country town. I was only supposed to be here for a week but, enjoyed it so much I stayed for 4 months. I was actually living in the DR for a year and a half before I ever went to Sosua. (I didn't like it then and I still don't like it.)) If you do decide to move please, plan ahead. It's a very easy transition if you plan ahead. Depending on where you decide to settle you can find all the comforts of home here.
