Having never been to the DR, I really do not know to much about safety there. I have learned some by reading all the blogs on this thread, about 70 hours of reading I estimate, but I need to know more about safety. I would love to read some opinion on safety in and around Sosua and all the north shore. Like where can you safely walk in the day time.

Sosua feels really safe to me. I walked back and forth between New Garden and Passion after dark and never felt worried. Most people make their money thanks to the tourism and care about your safety. Dead bodies and robberies hit them the hardest.
STAy OUT Of DARK ALLEYS AT NIGHT AND YOU WILL HAVE NO PROBLEMS. IT IS A TOURIST TOWN. THEY donot WANT THEIR PAYING CUSTOMERS BOTHERED. The DR is a lovely place if you have money. I am not sure why people are so frightened to see other places.

Talking about Vegemite, I used it on the farm when I laid pipes into water for the summer, anti rusting, works well.
But on fresh bread with butter, yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmy.

Gary[/QUOTE]You can walk anywhere in the daylight on the North Coast, and almost anywhere at night. The sort of places it might be unadvisable to go you won't find yourself in unless you have gone out of your way to look for an "adventure".
So long as there are people about, little businesses open, etc, you will be safe.
But walking in the non-tourist areas, buying at colmados, drinking at bars and socializing with the locals, is a different thing from approaching women on the street there. If you start doing that you need to be very careful whom you might offend. Even women who would be only too keen to go with you might not want to be seen doing it in front of their neighbours. If you settle at a bar or dance-hall those who are interested will soon make themselves known to you.
Do not take up any offers of help from local males. Most are quite harmless and are just looking for a tip or a drink, but you could get unlucky. And don't go with women to "their" place. They could have "cousins" you don't want to meet waiting for you.
Main thing wherever you go, is to look "purposeful'. Even if you are hopelessly lost, don't let it show. If you look like you need help you will attract people. Most will be kind-hearted and helpful, some will be kind-hearted and helpful but expect something out of it, and if you are really unlucky some scammer will try to latch onto you.
I was going to post this report in the Gogo forum, but its lessons fir everybody on the DR board.
I was hanging in SD with brother P and Bq when I met some DR newbies on the Mystic stoop. After several hours of Brugal we were all friends and they eanyed to ride with me on the 7am bus to Sosia. They were cool young dudes from VA. Rumba became our spot. Well one of the VA dides invited a chica over and they started negotiations. They reached a deal and decided ti share a beer before departure. The VA dude saw a girl he liked better and said he wad ditching yhis broad. He went to the bathroom but she was still there and said in perfect english" You slick mf, now you want to ditch me?". She wanted her money. The girl said she was the chiefs niece. I stepped in as she grabbed a bottle, and offered her a 100p note. She said no. Security came over and he told me to talk to my boy. Oh! Security is an old friend. I told the jit to pay her the 200p and he did.
Later security said they were getting tired of guys coming in t as king picturrs and wasting girls time like little boys. He said if you not buying pussy in a pussy joint then don't lead the girls on. These are independents and are here to hustle fast. Jist a headsup guys, these girls are hardcore.
Sorry fellas, had to clear security at the airport.
Turns out that 200p was the best money spent of the whole trip. It made the guys slow down and realize bullshit can happen. And by the stunned look on their faces was priceless. And it also made them open minded enough so I could teach. Before it was drinking and fucking and partying.
I explained why I didn't invite some of the girls over who knew me and gave me a kiss. I explained how its important to survey the situation and not be a SPH (Supper pussy hound). Before none of this matteref to them but they were understanding.
Look! We all have encountered loca chicas, but when you have some fault or not, the important thing is not to let it get out of hand. Once a crowd pays attention, once the police arrive, once bottles are grabbed, your bill just increased.
Later that night on May 28th. Went back to the Rumba Bar about 5:30pm. One by one the guys show up. About 8:30pm we head across the street and have dinner. Bad move, ate too much. Went to room to rest, again. Came back out at 11:30pm. A girl come up to me and we say hi. I asked where she was from and she Santo Domingo. I just let that one die on the vine. Next girl, Santo Domingo, lost interest in her too after hearing that. Another girl approaches me. I ask where she is from, Santo Domingo. I told myself to give this one a chance. She wanted 2 mil and wouldn't budge. I said nice to meet you, good bye. The next girl to approach me was from Santo Domingo too. I'm on a roll. She came down to 1500, but she was bitching about it. So I passed on her too. The next girl was from Santo Domingo too, geez. She wanted 2500p, I just turned away from her. I have zero luck with the girls from Santo Domingo, every one of them. Then girls from other cities came around. For one reason or another I pasted. I had one that quoted me 4000p. I just laughed out loud and went over to some friends that just showed up. I finally meet somebody interesting. A 19, tall, lenghty, great legs, big smile. She asked 2000p. I counter with 1000p. She agrees on 1500p and all of my requests. Get to the room, shoot the photos, clean up, so-so on the BBBJ, she's young, she was a little on the tight side. Finish up, pay the tab, walk her to the entrance. Another above average one. It's 4am. Time to call it a night.

Llttf, this is my third visit to the DR and the post cards I mailed out last two years form here did make it to the US. My first trip to Costa Rica, the post cards took three months to show up. The next three trips there. No problems.
One of my friends that lives here told me if you rent a car or motorbike and get a dent or even a scratch, the rental company will charge you an outrages amount to repair it. He said a small scratch will get you a $600 USD qoute. And if you call the police, you might get it down to $200-$300 USD. He also says, the police will get a cut.
I also noticed a flat bed truck with the transit police pulling people over and taking their bikes if you weren't wearing a helmet. 2000p to get your bike back.
I'm in Boca Chica, too much drama with my first girl here. I will post it later. Must read this one.

It is obvious you have never visited if you are worried about walking around there. I am not trying to insinuate anything, but you may want to visit a place before moving there. I once did 13 days in Sosua, and that was too long for me. Do not worry, you will be an expert on the place within the week.

Thanks Charlie for the well written report on safety. Lots of advice. Excellent. You mention Colmados. I'm guessing a barrio where they live. I don't think I know this area. Next to and west of Sosua bay? I'm also taking what you both said that 'prospecting in the barrio' even daytime although mostly safe, may not be so productive, unless, as you say, in one of the little bars. I've recently been in Medellin and San Salvador so I was thinking there was some similarity in safety but I'm happy to hear not. A small problem have is where I'll be living <infiniti-blu. Com they do not allow working girls. There are some stategies I can use to get girls in, but in general a problem. So, you mention not to go back to girls place because of cousins. Lets talk a little more about that. They going to kid-nap me? Beat me even if I'm compliant? My nature is to be nieve and realy brazen. Sometimes not a great mix.
