Slum = substandard housing and neighborhood
Two of my regulars showed me their apartment located at a 15 minute trike ride from Walking Street in an area that can best be described as a slum (although I'm aware there are even worse areas in the PI or elsewhere in the world).
Picture no. 1 (which is the last one of the 5 below) shows the entrance to the house they share with a family with 3 children.
Picture 2, 3 and 4 show their apartment that's only a part of the total house (about 1/3 I think).
When you come in there's a small 'kitchen' but it only has cold running water; there's no gas for cooking. You can see a part of the sink in picture 2.
In picture 3 you see the living room, only 9 square meters at the most!
Picture 4 shows the view from the living room at the kitchen and the toilet (the door on the right). No shower, only a toilet.
Picture 5 shows their street.
Can you imagine they are living in this small apartment together with 2 kids? They have almost zero possessions. I saw maybe 6 carton boxes with all their belongings. They sleep on the air matrass you see in the pictures. No bed, no chairs, no television, no aircon, nothing.
The rent is 2000 PhP / month (excluding water and electricity).
They showed me around their neighbourhood and I met some of their friends. It's amazing how relaxed and friendly these people are. Lots of children all around. And mosquitos, LOL.
This neighbourhood is home to a lot of trike drivers by the way. I can understand better now why they want 100 PhP for a ride.
I have never been a cheap charlie, I think I even spoil the girls a little bit and after seeing this I will continue doing that.
I can also understand better now why they are always texting us with 'stupid' questions as mentioned below. Wouldn't we be bored in an apartment like this?
Thank you for your report. Even though there are even worst living conditions as duly noted by our scholars and non-scholars or by someone else's definition of 'slum'. Slum = substandard housing. It does not matter whether there is a toilet or cement walls. The only question is what is standard? Substandard is substandard. Some would argue that standard is the average housing! It is a shame that this may be the standard for the Philippines.
The truth is they live in substandard housing that we would not live in. In case there is someone here who would, I will gladly pay for 12 months of rent for you.
Yes, it doesn't take much to improve someone's abole here. Quite a few do not have a hook up for running water. Hook up cost is P5000-7000.
BTW scholars, the comment referred to the lack of warm or hot water, not how cold the water is.
The sad truth is most people's lives here can truly be enhanced at the cost one's weekly drinking and cizgarette budget!
