What exactly are these places, Manhattan and Judy's that I've heard vaguely mentioned throughout this forum? Are they saunas, bars or nightclubs? Do they have WGs? What's the average age of the patrons and girls (if any)?

Anyone checked them out yet? Several of the TRL bars have relocated there...in a variety of incarnations.
I checked out last weekend. I hate to say this, but I honestly have no idea where they were. I have the address in Chinese, which I can't read well enough. Wait, as I typed this I sms'd a bar owner there and here's the general address -- 926 Pudong Avenue (Yuan Shen Rd).
Anyway, the scene there is a bit different than TRL. More local Chinese, more tourists staying in hotels, and even some husband and wife combos. Definitely not as wild as TRL was. I will put in a plug however for Starlite bar. It's ludicrously expensive (like TRL, at least), but the owner is a friend of mine and she is a very good gal - nice person really. Furthermore, it is, or at least I suspect it is, a BJ or take out style bar. I've gotten that (and more) in her prior bar, and this bar is set up to be like that style (bring the girls to the second floor with stripper pole rooms). But be prepared to spend heavily and/or stay late to get to that stage of the bar action...not a cheap BBS or even a Julu lu bar by any means.
Only tried a couple other places there, and nothing going on. The big circular bar in the middle of the side street (you'll see it instantly) has hostesses that danced with customers and appeared to allow some mild groping, perhaps more, and had a good band (same band as at Luna, at least the night I went). Staff was good. Way too loud for me. Spent 5mil rmb on decoration, so think Xintiandi style bar. Prices pretty normal...ie not cheap but not like Starlite or TRL bars where they jack it up.
Overall feeling is this area certainly isn't worth a regular trip from Puxi, but it's ok if you are in Pudong near that area or want a different place for a night.

There is a poll for the best bar for the hobby. I'm keeping track of the votes. So far, Maggie's in Beijing leads with 2 votes, followed by (uggh) Swing and a place in Dalian I don't know. There is no SH bar.

The new bar ("THE OFFICE") is really very well done, I remember that place was empty for years (new but empty, waiting for someone to rent it), it is round building in a centre of a small square full of other bars. Nice to hang out, killer band playing every day but monday (best band I ever saw in bars).
I did not get if and how it works - they have waitressess in uniforms, quite young, I would hit most of them right away. Then they have girls on payroll in civil clothing, I talked with some of them, they are more like "drink girls" imho, one of them was cute she looked like she is willing to go but claimed she has menses so who knows. And also there are independents coming there, they should be more direct. Also she told me now because Chinese new year is comming there are less girls there but after that there will be lots of lots of them.
The central bar has two "open for public" floors, 2nd floor is an "arcade" so you can see to the stage on 1st floor and has pool table there. Then there is mysterious 3rd floor and allegedly even 4th floor where one of the girls told me there are "happy rooms" - but she might have been joking or maybe rooms for private parties, who knows.
At this small sqaure are also other smaller bars, also with some bar girls and some independents. Probably best approach would be to ask directly any bar girl if she could point you out which of the girl there is independent. Otherwise you might end up paying lots of tequilas and go hom alone.
Oh, also on this square is a massage/spa salon - "Massage for men" or something like that is written on it. Seems upscale (read expeansive), never tried to go inside though.
Anyway seems some new good location imight brewing there, will see how it pans out. It is not that far from Puxi (2-3km from Fuxing or Yanan tunnels = 2 minuts with a taxi), so even Pudongers might check it out.

Lucky you. I was there at around 3 and it was completely packed. Punters all packed in the rooms and are falling asleep. Either they were too busy or they didn't give a s**t. I asked for a girl and had to wait a solid hour before they brought me to a random line (no beauty, unfortunately). "What? Did you asked for a girl? But we didn't hear you say it." I had a fit but they just came me a blank look. sigh!
On the plus side, the place is opened and most of the girls are still around.
Denny 1234 - thanks for the great report. Everything you said comports with my impressions from my one-time experience as well.
The Office, as I mentioned, is like a very upscale talking bar. Not stiff, just big and nicely decorated and, with luck, well managed. The band is the band from Luna - they've been in SH for many, many years. The girls there looked overall pretty cute to me as well.
The downsides of the Office are that it is extremely loud, huge place, and the girls may or may not be available for take out. My guess, and it's purely a guess, is that most are not. It's nothing like Manhattan or Judy's, or Maggies (Beijing) - it's more like a Hard Rock Cafe with some girls on staff to chat with, dance with, and perhaps grope a bit if you work up to that. It's also not super crowded, partly due to its enormous size. My guess is that place will be the hub of activity in that area, but mostly for tourists as it seems a place that one would get bored of after very few visits.
There also appeared to be some KTVs in the area. Others might know more about this.
Manager has changed. I have his cell # but have not found out where he is working at present. Two of the girls I know 'resigned' in the last month. The other one I know is leaving for CNY. Changes, changes.

Probably not worth it. 3rd fl of The Office is a restaurant, completely unused, and I've never seen anyone (many times there) go up to any 4th fl. They have a great happy hour till 9pm weekdays (not Sat-Sun nights). The band, which is decent, is Tues-Sun nights, starting at 9:30pm. Good pool table on 2nd floor. In my mind, there's nothing great in this area. There is a place directly across from the entrance of the Office, which has a few rooms upstairs for groping. Only went 1 time and was bored. Many cute girls in this bar area, but nothing like TRL or Manhattan now.
I was on that street and decided to double-check if the Shanghai Hotel was closed or not, since I had not seen any reports about it for a long time to indicate otherwise. It was open and business as usual, they complained things were a bit slow... Maybe because half their potential customer base still think they are closed down? Didn't find my regular provider (number 8, a hot little thing from Sichuan) but I haven't been there for more than half a year so some changes were to be expected. Didn't have the red rope but I was kind of running by my own script and don't know if it is off the menu or not. Anyway all was pretty good, lineup quality was more or less as I remember from before and I was very happy with my selection.

Anyway I was walking past Shanghai Hotel and decided to see if the sauna was still closed. But it was open, and business as usual. Someone mentioned to me that business was a little slow, maybe no surprise if most of their customers think they are closed. The lineup was decent. I didn't find my regular provider (number 8, a hot little thing from Sichuan) but still was happy with my selection and had a very good time. Didn't do the red rope but I was running by my own script so don't know if it is off the menu. I'll be back for sure.
Sacrosa remains busy. 311 usually booked, though she now has a boyfriend (of three months...go figure). 205 provides adequate service (no big into DATY) but she too is booked more often than not. 550 has been there a year and is a real work horse. When things get busy at Heting, she goes over there to backfill. (Big tits, stury girl, BBBJCIM, quite friendly). 123 is cute, but nature gave her a somewhat small opening. Not her fault. Cute girl, ok body, somewhat cute face, but insists on closing down her legs to limit penetration. Just haven't found anyone in recent times at Sacrosa that could match the legendary 590 or the untra-wild 562.
That having been said, stopped by Merrylin Hotel across from the Intercontinental. Long time favorite has returned home. She was THE diamond in the rough at that place. Fujian girl who could fuck you silly and make you believe she was lovin it more than you. Oh well.
Had to go for the line up. Thought, what the heck. The Hammer Commander (mammasan) came to the ready room herself. Didn't used to do that. Showed me a slip of paper. 680RMB for 70 minutes. Yep. I know that. Off we went. I was about to kick myself until the fake painting came up. ANd then...fuck me naked and raw. There were 15+ fucking girls behind the glass in new outfits. I about shit. Now, to keep things in perspective, this is Merrylin. But the 'newness' and quality of the girls was way up. I was very surprised. I didn't have time to look for long, but I would say the range was 6-7, with maybe an 8. No one overweight.
Went for a big titted girl #33 from Chongqing. Face ok, meaty ass, probably a little more meat than those of you who like spinners. She'd been there three months. Friendly, great attitude, totally into it, lots of fun. All around good service, allows DATY. She really likes to suck dick, or if not, she sure fakes it well...for a long time
In summary, I believe Merrylin is worth a re-look given the new talent and uniforms. Somebody over there has raised the standards of the line up. Does it compare favorably to Sacrosa? The jury is still out on that one. Compare favorable to 999? Probably not that good. Heting? Probably slightly below.
The point is this: it now appears to be a viable alternative to Sacrosa, especially sine Sacrosa is usually crowded and the waiting time are getting longer even for weekdays.
