Chiang Mai

I been to Chiang mai once about 5 yr ago there are not much to offer compare to Bangkok, Mongering is more expensive than Pattaya and Quality is not as good, there are just more thing to do in Bangkok and I go there twice a yr and I like Phuket alot too enjoy the beach and scuba diving, I really don't see the reason to travel to CM just for the mongering.

The main reason that I moved to CM [10+ yrs ago] was to escape from the nightlife and temptations of Pattaya and BKK. It worked! Not many sexual temptations in your face like the sex cities, but if you look under the rug, you can find some. In the 10+ yrs I've been there, there are still only 4 agogo bars and most of the thai brothels have been closed down I think in order to attract more of the 'family tourists'. If you want some action in CM, bring your own.

Aside from the usual group of older white guys with or looking for Thai wives or girlfriends, I mainly see backpackers and other Asians coming as tourist to Chiang Mai. I came up for Songkran and have seen tons of Japanese tourists old and young. Maybe the local men who would generally frequent sex workers leave town to work and the young guys don't need to pay for it here. When I cam in August / September I picked up a girl from Spice and on the way to the hotel I saw tons of clubs with drunk young Thai men and women. Also during Songkran I saw more than a few young Thai girls knocking the beer back and young Thai guys getting cozy with them.

On to the report. I met a few other young Americans and after several beers we headed out in search of a go-go place. We stopped into the first one we found (a few hundred meters from the McDonalds) and went in because an older westerner I saw told me it was probably the best one in town. What I saw was a bit disappointing. We had a few drinks and myself and another guy bought a drink for and chatted with two of the waitresses (neither of whom would be bar fined, mine saying she had a husband and the other saying she was soon to be married).

In a joking mood I threw 20 baht notes on stage, because in contrast to strip joints back home this one was pretty depressing. One girl came over and joked with us (I should have tried to barfine her but when she got off stage I did not call her over and someone else did) and the other asked for more money so no more was thrown. Maybe throwing money on stage is not pro-forma in Thailand or 20baht is not a good number? As time went on a girl having a drink with another customer kept winking and smiling at me (usually a good sign).

I don't know her stage number but I think her name is Oh. She has fairly fair skin, is short, a 6-7/10 in the looks department and 30yo. I'm staying in a cheap fan room, so I asked her to find a place near by and told her I would pay for hit. In the end I had to pay her 1500 + 500 barfine for ST, even though when we agreed on price the 1500 was for LT (down from her initial ask of 3000). Three Turks barfined three girls and told me they were paying 2000LT plus the barfine but one said he was going to try to get his down to 1500. I think the go-go bar you are referring to is the Spotlight.

In the not so distant past the Spotlight go-go used to be, theeeee place to go in the town.

It was almost on equal par to many bars in Bangkok only on a smaller scale. It had live sex shows and quite often some of the girls would dance on stage, naked. On occasions some girls that were freelance would also be working in the Spotlight and parade outside wearing see-through string tee shirts or vests and others went virtually topless.

There were two Farang owners, an English guy, football crazy Bob Crabtree and a German called, Hos. Bob died some years ago, but Hos is still going strong and I occasionally bump into him when I'm out shopping at Big C during the day. A very nice welcoming man, always has time to chat with his customers.

These days since the clampdowns, the place is a sorry excuse for what is used to be in it`s heyday. It is seriously in need of a lick of paint and usually has two girls looking completely bored dressed in a way that wouldn't look out of place at a church meeting propped up on stalls outside. No more hello welcomes, because that was banned in Chiang Mai a couple of years ago.

But I do have many fond memories of the Spotlight, during the days when it used to be fun.

The mama san that used to work at the Spotlight and was there for many years, now works in the Foxy Lady. A lovely lady, must be in her sixties now but still working and still capable of knocking out a Farang that gets out of line with one blow of her famous right hook. The Foxy Lady is rumoured to be livelier than the Spotlight, but I have heard that the girls are pushy for drinks and will quote ridiculous prices if they are asked to go out.

Maybe some of you would like to share your experiences at these bars, would be interesting to hear them.

I was there myself a couple of months ago, but apart from a 20yo Laos girl I only saw one other attractive woman I think. The rest fell into the "don't care" or "somebody with your body has no business taking of your clothes in public" as far as I was concerned. It is beautiful country and a great road trip. I really dug Mae Hong Son, a well preserved provincial town with some Burmese influence. I tried my best not to even think about shagging any Thai girls once I left Chiang Mai, although I saw many lovely girls along the way. I did not think any decent ones were available and besides, that was not why I made the trip. There were plenty of fresh, good looking backpacker girls in Pai. If I were 25 again, I would have stopped and got it on with one.

The two cheap daytime brothels on Nimmanhaemin Soi 15 are still open. No idea how long they'd last in such a posh neighborhood. Places open at 10 am or so, and seem to have 3-5 girls each. In the cleaner place, girls are 650 per pop, in the downmarket one 400/500/600. Not amazing looks, but decent compared to the dregs on Loi Kroh, even some Northern natives there. Service was abysmal this time (I think I just made a bad pick, a 30 yo from Lampang) , but I got a few ok ones there before. Got flea bites too, I think... the place is a real craphole.

Locals are their mainstay, but they say Farang also visit regularly. The cheaper place (the one with better girls) has an incredibly dirty and off-putting selection area, but rooms are mostly fit for the purpose. Basic shacks with bed and running water in the corner. They do have soap and seem to wash their wares (judging by sheets and towels hanging outside). The venues are bottom-of-the-barrel, but some of the women are not bad looking at all, and can be fun / decent value.
