This spot might be something I somehow missed, or else a recent development. Can I just ask a couple of questions?

Are you talking about freelance girls here?
Are they on motorbikes, or walking around on foot, or inside the bars in that area?
When you say 'up that way', where are you talking about exactly? And did you mean just on one street or for a few blocks around?

And about this next part...

When you walk up Thai Van Lung and hit Le Thanh Ton. Just to your right on Le Thanh Ton is Wild HOrse, Irish House and Heart of Darkness. These (as well as Blue Gecko) are packed full of free lancers and bar staff who are semi pro. They won't go with anyone but a little charm willget you a long way.

Thanks.[/QUOTE]It's a new tourist guide book and map. Found on my last trip in my hotel (Ho Sen) but I spotted it in quite a few shops. It has a short section on bars + a photo of the aforementioned Lan. Wanted to see if I could find her so went to the bars recommended in the guide. It cost $6.

I'm still wondering exactly where this would be though. Which streets? A few streets in that general area, or just one block, or...? The Japanese bars in this area shut just before 12, the Hello Darling bars (49, 51, etc) mostly shut at 1am. I haven't ever seen something I'd call a 'scene' in the area I think you're talking about, other than a few girls from these places going to get their motorbikes and go home. You get the occassional working girls on motorbikes, but it's like on some nights you would see that, other nights you wouldn't.

OK I think I know the ones you mean now. (there's also a few bars up on Thai Van Lung near there, on the way to Chieu Thuy, so wasn't sure if you meant those). Heart of Darkness is history, got replaced by an Italian restaurant. Those other 2 are mainstream type bars, as far as I know. Irish House? Do you mean Sheridan's? Wild Horse is on Thai Van Lung before you get to the corner. I've never seen any of those places 'packed' with freelancers.

I will be coming to HCMC in a couple of weeks in order to work. Anyone interested in meeting for a drink and perhaps show me the ropes?

I have never been to VN, although I have extensive experience in Asia - the Philippines and Hong Kong in particular. I'd be happy to share my knowledge of these places in exchange for your HCMC expertise.

I am a 48 year old Canadian that knows his way around the bars. It would be nice to have a drinking companion for my first foray into the HCMC scene.

Here are some reviews of places of note discussed in forum as well as general experience

252 Ly Thai To: I came in there with a few friends with a cavalier attitude, expecting 6-7s, or even 5-6s, instead what I find are 2-3s. The women are so old they are already dying their hair. I was very keen on getting some mind you, so I looked every single one at least a few times, and they kept on telling the 'youngest' girl to step up but the youngest was at least 30! The fee was 150,000 dong for entrance, and of course I left, thinking I probably wouldn't even let these women touch me if it was pro bono.

NY Saigon: It should be noted that the girls in these bars usually are interchangeable and they float to the other bars near the area if there isn't enough business. The girls here at NY Saigon were 4-5s. Very friendly and eager to please with the hand in the inner thigh deal. I got a beer, bought every girl a drink, but then ran off to Cali. Make sure you ask about minimum drinks purchased if you are set on taking a girl out.

Cali: The girls here are a hell of a lot better looking than the other bars in the area. I would give them 6-7 with one girl breaking the 7 barrier, but arrogant and not fun to talk to. The temporary mamisan is actually very friendly, forgot her name cause i was too busy getting the rub down from her too. The music is terrible, but the girls are very friendly and some are a little "too" eager to please.

Vien Dong: Massage place that is famous to the locals. The girls here are generally very nice and friendly, with the exception of one girl that I absolutely hated. If you have a girl that doesn't smile right off the bat, ask for another one IMMEDIATELY! There are lots of girls here, there is NO reason you should have to put up with that nonsense. I got the VIP room a few times as well as normal, these girls will do more than hj if they like you and given the right price. Take care of the door guy in the tan uniform, he will send you a beautiful one. I gave him 50,000 after I disliked my first girl and he sent me a stunner who let me do all sorts of things to her and was incredibly nice and funny. Girls range from 6-8, with rare occasional 9.

Volcano and Liquid: I didn't know it but these girls, no matter how sluttily dressed, are not necessarily pros. I'd say they're mostly semi-pros or have very bad fashion sense, but they all got sugar daddies up the wazoo. Luckily, we ran into a really cool dude who introduced us to almost 10 of the girls there (score: 7-9s, mostly 8s). All of them, extremely friendly, but if you want to get to know them, I'd avoid the direct approach unless you're good looking, young, got friends just in case of trouble, and got money.... Just make it easy on yourself, take care of the alpha male of the group, and the whole cupboard will open to you.

Xe Om: So this is the rundown with a lot of these guys, some of them drive girls around all over Pham Ngu Lao. I see the same dudes and girls all the time. They are independent. Then there are the xe oms that get their girls from the local mafia representative. These girls are usually overpriced, as they got 3 chains of fees to go through. But if you like the girl, get their phone number. You can replace a girl if you do not like them. In my opinion the girls that cost $50 and $100 are exactly the same, minus the nicer clothes. I can always tell how long a girl has been doing the biz by how nice her clothes are. The Xe Om guys at the corner of Pham Ngu Lao and De Tham as well as the ones near Cyclo bar are pretty knowledgeable and have connections - but don't let them take you to 252 Ly Thai To!!!! Ask them for 'boom boom' if you are interested.

(Hot Toc: My) on Le Lai: The girls are 5-6s. You have to ask for the private room, where you negotiate what you want to do. The girls are in cute little polka dot dresses. The girl I got was cute, but not talkative, so I didn't want anything.

I've been to others, but the other good places are not in plain sight I can't list them all. The Bia Om places and the "Restaurants" in D1 are a plenty and they have 6-7s that will cater to your whim after you purchase a certain amount of food from the establishment. Just make sure that you negotiate with the girl as well as the mamisan or manager so there is no confusion as to what service you want.

After reading Roger's post last week I went out and made the rounds. To be fair, he was basing his reports on visits over the past year or so, not just how it is NOW. I have to say, I wasn't blown away by Ms Lan of Chieu Thuy, and the girls in Cali and NY Saigon seemed like nothing great. I've always thought 91 was the one that tended to have the most girls 7 or above, and it still is definitely one of the tops in that category (youth/looks). It's also the one bar that is least 'interactive' of the bunch (along with NY), with 29 being the most. Yes, these girls move around -- you see one in 91 and next month she's in 49, and so on. One thing Roger said that I strongly disagree with is that the girls are fresh in these places. A lot of these girls have been working in these bars a few years now. The percentage you could call 'fresh' (as in, working 2 months or less) is small. The 'semi-pro' bars he mentioned are what I'd call straight bars with few if any working girls most nights. And if you wandered that area on foot from 12.30-1.30 these days, I think there's a fair chance you might wander around and around and not see any girls who are really available. To me, it looked like Roger was painting an unrealistically rosy picture, based on what I'd seen in that area in the past. Then I went out to check it out in person and saw it was even worse now than I'd even remembered it. I've pretty much given up on the discos. Vietnamese style nightclubs (like the old Nhac Tre's) is another scene that's quickly shrinking. There is one new one on Nam Khi Khoi Nghia that I haven't tried yet called Baccara or something like this.

I got to agree with Wendella in this. From my recent encounters in Calli, NY, Smiley, etc ... the experiences were forgetable at the most. My hunting ground at the moment is the discos and local karoakes outside district 1.

All I can say is I had the most incredible time of my life over 6 trips last year. They most certainly were not experiences that were "forgettable at most". And I don't know where all these tried old scrags who've done the rounds for a few years are coming from. I didn't hang out with any. I got to know some very interesting and beautiful girls. And I experienced natural sexual skill like I've never seen it before. And I have been around the block a few times.

Diganoally opposite KFC on NKKN. Looks modern from the outside but its meant for Locals. PR girls running all over the place. One of the PR Manageress used to be from Club 27 on Ngo Duc Ke D1. I've been a couple of times in SGN but thats again a few years ago. I will return by the end of next month but can only stay 3 nights, so I don't want to waste a lot of time by looking around. However, I prefer free-lancer places such as a good disco or nightclub above straight-to-the point action.

Yeah sorry for the harsh tone -- I was in a bad mood when I wrote that just because I went out 2 nights in a row (inspired by your posts!) and made the rounds, and was really disappointed with what I saw. You must have been lucky about that outdoor street scene, because these days there's just nothing happening in that area as far as girls walking around trying to hook up. I have seen that from time to time in the past, but not these days. And never lots of them, but just one or 2 here and there -- and the same one or 2 usually. The girls in the Hai Ba Trung type bars don't look like old hags (well, ok some do), but 'fresh' is pushing it. They can be veterans and still look good -- there's one in 29 who looks great but she's worked in at least 3 of these bars for the past 3-4 years. I think she just turned 22. She's young and pretty hot, but she's been with hundreds of guys. It is possible to come across young, hot fresh ones -- but it's a fairly rare occurrence. You know in that bar Cali, the guy out in front will always say "New girls! You come inside, now have beautiful new girl!" I usually fall for this line. Go inside and it's the same lineup for the most part, and then some 28 yr old mediocre girl comes up to me and that apparently is the new beautiful girl (in fairness, they did say "new" -- they did not say "young"). And then the bartender will tell me tonight is her first night. It's always their first night. Just part of the sales pitch.

About the clubs: the one on NTMK was called Olympic about 4-5 yrs ago, was shut down, reopened later with a new name, got shut down again, and after being closed for probably the last 2 years just reopened again. It looks huge from the outside and tiny from the inside, or it did in the past. Haven't been in the new version yet. Hopes not high, it never was any good in any of its previous incarnations, not that I saw.

Apocalypse Now is about the same as its always been these days -- actually it's a bit busier lately because they opened up the top floor too. Lost in Saigon is history, shut down probly 2 yrs ago. The owners opened one called Lush at the start of Ly Tu Truong which is pricier and way more upscale, but can be good sometimes. Not the beehive of available talent that LIS was.
