If I use Xoom to send money to myself before I travel, what type of identification am I required to have in order to pick up the money? Is the passport the only thing I will be asked for?

All you need is a passport. I won't ask why you are using Xoom, since there are much more cost effective ways to have access to your money via PAYPAL or an ATM @ certain banks.

My ATM card has been scammed before in Colombia. There's nothing like coming back home late at night and not being able to pay to get my car out of the airport parking lot because someone emptied my account. Probably should've had a back up plan back then, so for now the ATM card will be my last option. Thanks for the repply.
What do you mean your atm card was scammed? Can you elaborate? How was it done?

I wish I knew how it was done. Back in Colombia (Santa Marta) I got in the habit of using the same ATM (BBVA) almost everyday, and after 1 week there someone started drawing money out of my account from different cities around the country. Same thing happened to a friend of mine while staying in Barranquilla. It was as if they cloned the cards. Maybe someone here is more familiar with the possibilities that cause these issues.
I have been going to RD for almost 10 years, and have never had an ATM issue. If you are paranoid you can take several precautions. Transfer the funds in as needed from another account online, so you do not have a lot to steal, secondly, use the ATM inside the bank at the teller and/or only use it during banking hours. A backup ATM card/account is always a good idea. I monitor the account for activity frequently online as well.
Make sure you have the non 1-800 number to call your bank in the event you lose the card to a hungry machine.
On my last trip I usually had in my pocket a Princeton Tec Impulse LED micro flashlight, it is a very small one led flashlight, a little bit bigger than a Quarter coin. I was in a few homes when the power went out and after drinking presidente beer, a trip to the bathroom is always necessary, with the small flashlight, no problem finding the bathroom. That little flashlight comes in handy. The very small LED flashlights are made by different companies, they use a flat circular battery than can be changed. Also useful for seeing your money in a dark bar or to see the bill (la cuenta) in a dark bar. Photon is another type that I used in the past. They can be purchased online from 6 dollars and up.

My 295 peso or $8 dollar Nokia phone that I bought on the Claro store has a led light thats serves as a flashlight, very potent small bulb. I discover that from a chica, how can I imagine a cellphone with a flashlight? LOL.

Does anyone know whatever happened to Viking's Exotic Resort?
Their website has been down for weeks:

Did they close down the entire establishment or maybe just relocated to some other place?

First I use Verizon; I have been getting texts from a chica in the DR and thought I would send her one back. I replied to the text and even tried putting a 1 in front of the number. What I noticed was that the texts are being sent out but there is no delivery date and time listed for the message in the sent box and a green arrow shows next to the message rather then a green check.
Anybody have any idea why they aren't being delivered? Is it her phone? Do I need to do something different? Verizon was no help at all other then charging me for texts that never made it, so I thought I would try here.....Thanks in advance!

Because she is on orange and you have to buy a card to send her a text message because they steal big time.
Because she is on orange and you have to buy a card to send her a text message because they steal big time.
Not true. My "novia" in the DR has Orange and I have Verizon here in the states and we text back and forth all the time and I don't have to do anything other than dial her number.

Chances are the problem is with the carrier in the DR. Sometimes the system is down and the texts won't go through. The reason why Verizon is charging you is that they use a third party to handle international calls and texts and once you send it they charge you because they are being charged even though it may not go through. I have been through this with Verizon many times because I use my Verizon "world" phone in Colombia on a regular basis and it is something like $2.50 a minute for calls to and from Colombia and I get billed even if the call doesn't connect.
Thanks guys...I come here and I learn more than 30 minutes on the phone with some dumb ass Verizon tech. My guess is the service is down in the DR but at least I now know I am not missing something as far as some special "instructions" to text the DR.
