So let me choose and say I just want a hotel with as many girls in the lobby as possible. I find that in many hotels there are girls, but often there are only a few of them, the same ones every night, not very young or good-looking and the prices are much higher than on the open market (Hotel Moscow is one example of this in Petersburg). What's the best option if I want to have a chance of a reasonably big selection at least with some variety? Or alternatively not such a big selection, but very high standards? I appreciate your feedback. For most of us, hotels are ultimately the most important aspect of such trips, and there is so little info about them.

For a girl a hotel is not as profitable working place as brothel even if customers are paying more. For example, most girls in hotel Oktiabrskaya are maybe pretty but not young and price is high.

st petersburg (or piter as almost all russians call it) is hassle free for foreigners (europeans / americans) as far as the police go. as far as you wallet goes. well, that's a different story. it aint a budget city. if you are from the caucuses or africa, well, that's a different situation. expect to have your documents checked frequently. europeans and americans are left alone these days (word came down thru the food chain a few years ago to stop hassling and shaking down the tourists). as far as the mafia goes, well, where exactly do you intend to do your sightseeing? if you stick to the main areas, nevsky, neva tourist areas, major sights, your biggest problem will be the hordes of tourists (and sometimes big groups from china) , not the mafia. under no circumstances is it a good idea to wander the back streets drunk late at night or early in the morning and if your in stpb during a football match, avoid the rowdy, drunk fans before and especially after the game.
not sure when you are going but do check out peterhoff. it opens at the beginning of summer. pushkin is also nearby and worth a visit.

i don't stay in hotels anymore. i rent apartments, so this is not an issue for me. other posters have addressed this and you can search the forum and find advice on which hotels are "girl friendly." almost all the girls you find on rusdoug, etc use fake photos and / or are agencies, though you will also find here on the forum advice about the websites. a general rule on the webistes is: the more "stunning" the pics are, the more likely they are fake. hotels are european priced (at least the ones most european and americans find). taxis are also european priced. bye and large a first time visitor is shocked to find how expensive stpb is. there are a number of escort agencies in stpb that have english websites. and they too are european priced. to find the russian prices you will need to search the web in russian. you can also search and find many posts here about clubs and saunas and salons, though the salons and their lineups appear and disappear daily.
finally, if your alone, arrange a pick up at the airport. the taxi mafia is in force at pulkovo. there is a taxi stand in the airport where you can book a taxi at a better price, but it's still a lot more expensive than what you could arrange if you can call a normal taxi and have it pick you up (rough cost for a normal taxi is 700 rubles, more or less; taxi mafia will shake you down for 3000 rubles). there are also regular buses and small vans that go back and forth from pulkovo to different metro stops (#13 or any bus or fan with 13 in it goes to pulkovo 2). the bus costs about 35 rubles. small van is 50 or such.
finally, on your trip to stpb from the airport due take note of the businesses you pass by. look to your right. and count the mercedes, jaguar, bmw dealerships. get the picture? (this will prepare you for the shops on nevski.)
