There is a fairly significant sized expatriate population there, which is obviously a source of currency. I think you would see a different picture in some of the hinterland towns and rural areas or even in the backstreet barrios of Montellano or Los Cangrejos or Sabaneta.

In any case, to really examine the issue you would have to know what is average life expectancy, what percentage of people suffer from nutritional deficiencies, etc. And in particular whether the physical and mental development of children was lagging due to nutritional issues compared to other populations. It is not always a question of just getting nutrition, but of quality too.

But you raise an interesting point. In the USA 46 million people or 15% of all US residents are on food stamps (including many children). Is the DR therefore a wealthier country than the US, or are the people just thinner? And if all 46 million recipients of food stamps had them stopped tomorrow, would many people in the US go hungry, or would they be out in the streets in large numbers hustling for whatever they can get?

Here's a bit of information I pasted in. The high level of anaemia in children under 14 is worrying and suggests that they aren't getting enough meat. This also causes problems later on when pregnant mothers are anaemic, which leads to complications of pregnancy.

Among school age children, 19% suffer from stunting at national level. The provinces with the highest prevalence rates were Bahoruco in the South, Elías Piñas and Monte Plata.

Micronutrient deficiencies, mainly iodine, vitamin A and iron, are public health problems in Dominican Republic. It is estimated that 5% of school-age children at national level have goiter, although this prevalence reaches up to 13% in region I (San Cristóbal, Peravia, Monte Plata).

The prevalence of low serum retinol (<20 µg/dL) affects 23% of children aged 1-5 years, indicating that vitamin A deficiency is a public health problem among Dominicans.

The prevalence of anemia (defined as low hemoglobin) affects 31% of children aged 1 to 14 years, with higher levels in urban areas (32%) than in rural areas (25%).

Although Dominican Republic experienced an economic crisis during the 1980s, in the following decade the country made considerable advances to stabilize the economy. Unemployment rates diminished from 27% to 20% between 1980 and 1990 and poverty was hereby greatly reduced. Food insecurity affects the most vulnerable population groups, especially young children and those regions with the highest poverty indices.

Actually health and nutritional deficiencies are more subtle than that. For example Vitamin A deficiency and anemia due to poor diet with insufficient meat, eggs, and fresh vegetables can lead to problem pregnancies and further problems with children who themselves suffer from malnutrition leading to developmental problems. Unfortunately these things have to be looked at statistically over whole populations rather than on subjective data based on personal observations.

I don't think the solution is really to send money after you have heard that a child you know has died, even if that salves your conscience a bit. I think the important thing to remember is that many of us have been fortunate in life in things like educational opportunities and even just in the country we were born in and probably wouldn't have achieved whatever success we have without things like good nutrition and healthcare in childhood, including access to modern medications. I know when I was seven years old I had a severe pneumonia and would probably have died had the doctor not come to my house and given me a shot of penicillin.

This discussion could run for ever, but I think it is reasonable to contribute to the Dominican economy and people according to what you can easily afford, and not according to some kind of political theory that may could easily become an excuse for being ungenerous rather than a real belief that you are doing what is best for the person concerned.

The platter might not have been suitable to feed the baby if it was meat and plantains or something like that, and anyway she probably needed more than one feed for the baby.

Of course she might have been a scammer. Maybe there was no baby and she had 10, 000 pesos in her wallet. We can never really know.

I wasn't serious in the least bit, but if you read this thread long enough you will see that it is one of the old wives tales that many here believe right along with all of the starving families and sick babies.

Of course in every society there are men who beat women, people who starve, and kids who get sick and die. But to think that these things have overtaken the DR is bullshit. And to think that the burden for remedying these situations should fall on a monger who is vacationing for a week is double bullshit. I think most people here go on vacation to have a good time and get away from problems, and not to have to shell out extra money to fix someone else's problems for them. Just because I said Gogo made a statement while riding through Puerto Plata didn't mean his statement was only in reference to Puerto Plata or that you had to give us due diligence on Puerto Plata the city / province or the DR in general. That just happened to be the place we were when the statement came out of his mouth.

But the phenomenon of men and boys hanging out on the corner all day in their own neighborhood not doing a damn thing happens all over the country. If they were in fact starving you would think they would be doing something better with their time; even begging since that is the big topic now. As I said, they never appear to be starving, neither do they appear to be waiting for a meal to fall into their lap. They are just there chilling waiting to go home and get some rest so they can do the same thing the next day. So the following generalization doesn't apply to all mongers, but I've met some like this. One constant is the USA is the only place I know of where guys can make really good money and not have a girl they want to deal with.

Tourist wakes up after doozing off, and notices that puta is dressed and RDP 1, 500 are missing. He physically shakes her, she returns the money, they go downstairs to the hotel bar, have a drink, declare the matter settled, and make peace. Afterwards back to the room for a good nights sleep.

Next morning the puta files a complaint with the police, and Policia Nacional shows up with an arrest warrant shortly after 10 am. Tourist monger gets released 4 h later and after paying a combined RDP 60, 000 to all involved.

Case #2.

Tourist monger sessions with a different Dominican puta. Puta claims loudly, on the sidewalk that guy wanted sex w / o condom and that he physically attacked her. Meanwhile dude sits in adjacent restaurant with a beer rather than increasing the distance between him and her. Politur shows up and arrests him on the spot on a Sunday afternoon (!). He is now spending the night in the Sosua jail until the fiscal opens on Monday morning and reviews the case.

I bet a Grande Presidente that the monetary damage will be on the order of that in case #1. Plus, who needs this stress on a vacation.
